Apple will offer battery replacements for the Apple Watch

Apple has confirmed that they will offer battery replacements for the Apple Watch.

Apple offers battery replacements for many of their products, including laptops, iPhones and iPads, so it isn’t surprising that Apple would offer battery replacements for Apple Watch. Still, it’s good to have that assurance. What isn’t known, however, is how much a battery replacement will cost. From Techcrunch:

Well, when it comes to the battery at least, owners of Apple Watch will be able to extend its lifespan. An Apple spokesman confirmed to TechCrunch the “battery is replaceable”. Albeit, it’s not clear how much it will cost to send in your wearable to Apple to get it returned with a new cell in place.

We also don’t know what kind of warranty Apple will offer for the watch. For example, the iPhone warranty currently covers replacements for defective batteries for one year. Out of warranty, Apple offers a battery service for $79, with a $6.95 shipping charge.

The Apple Watch is expected to offer around 18 hours of battery life based on average use. We should know more about battery replacement plans following the launch of the Apple Watch next month.

These are Windows Central’s top picks of MWC 2015

Our favorites from Barcelona’s big mobile show

So, Mobile World Congress is done for another year, and that means that before we left we had to pick out our collective favorites from the event. MWC isn’t just about the devices, though, it brings together app developers, accessories, something to cover the whole mobile ecosystem. As such, we’ve been able to pick a good selection of top picks from this year’s event.

So, here’s what made the cut and why we chose it.

Apple Watch confirmed to include 8GB of internal storage, but only 2GB will be available

All Apple Watch models have been confirmed to have 8GB of internal storage, but only 2GB will be available. That said, it’s a watch and tells the time!

The 2GB limitation (2GB for music and just 75MB for photos) is actually generous for a smartwatch. Most consumers store countless GBs worth of music on their iPhones and the new smart wearable is a perfect companion device to control said collections. This would help negate the need to waste iPhone battery through wakening the screen and unlocking the display to access playback controls.

All three smartwatches from Apple, the Sport, Watch and Edition, will feature the same capacity. This extra storage enables iPhone owners to store some media on the Apple Watch so they aren’t required to be lumbered with a larger device, ideal for when out for a jog and such.

The remaining storage will be saved for the operating system and any apps you download and install. We’ll be able to find out more about storage on the Apple Watch when the smartwatches are released in April.

Starbucks Locator picks up user enhancements and fixes in freshly brewed update

A few days ago, we reviewed Starbucks Locator 2.0, which is a swell little app for you coffee fiends out in the world. Sure, you could use Cortana, but there are benefits to having a dedicated app for a frequently used function, including greater functionality and, in this case, barcode scanning for your Starbucks Card.

This morning, version 2.1 has gone out and with it numerous fixes, improvements and refinements to the user experience.

More details on the end of Weave newsreader for Windows Phone

Yesterday, it was announced that Weave newsreader is shutting down on March 14. The news was sudden, and at the time, no reason was publicly given. However, Windows Central has been in contact with the developer behind Weave – Arash Emami – for years now and he reached out to us with details on the decision.

First and foremost, the end of Weave is not about leaving Windows Phone. This situation is not the same as American Airlines or Bank of America. Instead, Emami is heading to work full-time at LinkedIn. As he reminds us, Seles Games – who makes Weave – was mostly a one-man show.

Apple donating over $50 million to help encourage more diversity in tech

Apple has pledged to donate over $50 million to a number of organizations that are trying to encourage more women, minorities and veterans to seek employment in the tech industry.

According to Fortune, Apple’s money will be going to groups like the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, which supports students in historically black colleges and universities. Part of its money will also go to the National Center for Women and Information Technology. Finally, the report says that Apple is in talks with military leaders to offer veterans better technology training.

Fortune spoke with Apple’s human resources chief Denise Young Smith about their divisity funding plans, which will extend over several years:

We wanted to create opportunities for minority candidates to get their first job at Apple,” said Young Smith, who took over as its head of HR a little over a year ago. (Before her current role, the longtime Apple exec spent a decade running recruiting for the retail side of the business.) “There is tremendous upside to that and we are dogged about the fact that we can’t innovate without being diverse and inclusive.”

In August 2014, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that he was “not satisfied” about the current race and gender makeup of the company and that Apple was “committed to being as innovative in advancing diversity as we are in developing our products.”
