Apple Watch Has 8GB of Storage, Limited to 2GB for Music and 75MB for Photos

Apple confirmed that all three editions of the Apple Watch will ship with 8GB of internal storage, according to 9to5Mac. Apple Watch users will be limited to up to 2GB of songs and up to 75MB of photos that are locally stored on the device and can be listened to or viewed without a paired iPhone. Songs can be synced using the Apple Watch companion app on compatible iPhones running iOS 8.2 or later.

2GB of music works out to anywhere from 200 to 500 songs depending on the audio quality, while the report claims that 75MB of photos will equal to over 100 photos that are automatically compressed for reduced file size on the Apple Watch. A portion of the remaining storage capacity is likely allocated to the Apple Watch’s operating system, and will store application binaries and resources when a native SDK is released.

New MacBook Pro and Air Benchmarks Comparable to Mid-2014 Models

The newly refreshed 13″ Retina MacBook Pro announced on Monday is seeing comparable performance to the mid-2014 model, according to the latest Geekbench benchmark. The early 2015 model with an Intel Core i5 processor clocked at 2.7GHz achieved a single-core score of 3043 and a multi-core score of 6448, a minor variance from last year’s low-end 13″ Retina MacBook Pro single-core score of 3056 and multi-core score of 6554.

MacBook Pro Benchmark 2015
The latest 11″ MacBook Air, with an Intel Core i5 processor clocked at 1.6GHz, also performed comparably to its predecessor in Geekbench benchmarks, with its single-core score of 2753 and multi-core score of 5486 marginally higher than the mid-2014 model‘s scores of 2430 and 5291 respectively. Meanwhile, the new 13″ MacBook Air had modestly lower scores, although more benchmarks will need to be averaged before results are conclusive.

MacBook Air Benchmark 2015
John Poole of Primate Labs, the makers of Geekbench, claims that the latest MacBook Pro and Air may see slight performance improvements after OS X Yosemite gets through first-boot housekeeping, so further benchmarks results will be needed for those models as well to determine accurate performance. Nevertheless, it is clear that this year’s refreshed MacBooks deliver only negligible improvements over the year-ago models.

The results are largely unsurprising given Intel’s focus on improving battery life versus performance with its latest Broadwell processors. The new MacBook Air and Pro lineups also have faster graphics and flash storage, two areas where improvements should be more noticeable over last year’s models. The refreshed 13″ Retina MacBook Pro in particular is up to 40% faster than the previous model with Intel Iris graphics.

Apple refreshed the MacBook Air lineup yesterday with Intel Broadwell processors, Thunderbolt 2 and Intel HD Graphics 6000. It also refreshed the 13″ MacBook Pro with similar improvements, including Intel Broadwell processors, Intel HD Graphics 6100 and all-day battery life. The latest MacBook Pros also gained a trackpad with built-in Force Touch technology that detects a small tap versus a deep press and performs a different action accordingly.

Apple Donates Over $50 Million to Increase Diversity in the Tech Industry

Apple LogoApple’s annual shareholders meeting is currently underway at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, and one big item on the agenda, according to Apple’s human resources chief Denise Young Smith, is a plan to partner with a few non-profit organizations on an effort to bring more women, minorities, and veterans into the tech industry (via Fortune).

The deal is said to be a multi-year effort worth $50 million, and to start off, Apple is partnering with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, a non-profit which focuses on supporting students enrolled in “historically black colleges and universities.”

The two will work together in expanding the role of minorities in the field, with Apple planning to donate over $40 million to the organization.

“Historically, other organizations have provided scholarship dollars or focused on whatever area matters most to them,” says Johnny Taylor, president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. “What differentiates this partnership with Apple is that it hits on everything that we do—it is the most comprehensive program ever offered to an HBCU organization.”

The company will partner with a separate, female-focused non-profit, the National Center for Women and Information Technology, to help with increasing the presence of women in the field. Apple will donate $10 million to the fund, with a four year plan to double recipients of the organization’s scholarships and internship programs.

Tim Cook will allow Rev. Jesse Jackson a few moments to speak during the shareholder meeting taking place today, and USA Today met with Jackson beforehand. He noted that the start of a more diverse presence in the tech field, most notably in Silicon Valley, is just beginning.

“President Obama said in Selma (Ala.) this weekend ‘the march is not yet over,’” Jackson is scheduled to say in a statement. “In Silicon Valley, the march for diversity and inclusion is just beginning. Several companies are implementing new diversity and inclusion strategies, most notably Intel’s landmark $300 million diversity Initiative.

“Apple and this thriving Silicon Valley are solving the world’s most challenging and complex problems. Diversity and Inclusion is a complex problem — if we put our collective minds to it, we can solve it, too. (Apple CEO) Tim (Cook), with Apple and your creative leadership, sensitivity and commitment, we know it can be done.”

Jackson has worked with Apple in these regards for over a year now, and has attended the shareholder meetings of other companies like Google, Hewlett-Packard, Facebook, Verizon and eBay, in a similar capacity to what he has planned today during Apple’s meeting.

Sony could start rolling out Lollipop from next week, according to Sony Indonesia

sony logo mwc 2015 1

The much anticipated Lollipop update for Sony Xperia devices could arrive from next week, according to a posting on Sony’s official Indonesian Facebook page.

Back in January, Sony hinted it would begin rolling out Lollipop from February, but as we’re approaching mid-March, we’re yet to hear anything solid. Unofficially, we’ve been hearing that Sony is leaving phones other than the Xperia Z series behind and we’ve got a glance at what Lollipop may look like thanks to a couple of leaked screenshots.

Now we may finally get to see that promised update. Sony Indonesia says the Lollipop OTA is scheduled for week 12, which is next week. Of course, this is only valid for Indonesia, as Sony will probably opt for a staged roll out, and there’s no information on which devices will actually get their Lollipop serving. There is, however, a partial changelog mentioned in the posting, which includes:

  • A “bold new user interface” inspired by Google’s Lollipop and Sony’s “expertise”
  • Improved lock screen with notification cards
  • Multi-user support
  • Ability to move apps to microSD

The OTA file will be about 1.2GB in size, according to the post, and take about 20 minutes to install.

Again, we shouldn’t read too much into this, even if it comes from an official channel – things can change last minute, and even if Sony does begin to push out Lollipop in Indonesia next week, you may have to wait a lot more, depending on your market and carrier.

Your Xbox One now takes game screenshots and suggests friends

Xbox One screenshot feature

The long-teased Xbox One March update is finally here, and it’s bringing some features that you may have missed if you’re familiar with the PlayStation 4. You can now take screenshots of whatever you’re doing, whether it’s to brag about your score (through messages or Twitter), set a custom background or save it to OneDrive for posterity. It should also be easier to both find and recognize friends. There’s now a suggested friends list, and you can share your real name if buddies wouldn’t know who you are based on your gamertag alone. Between these and more Xbox-specific updates (such as tile transparency controls and spam reporting), you’ll probably want to upgrade your Xbox as soon as you can — if just so you can rub your victories in your rivals’ faces.

Android Wear getting ready to put on WiFi support, gesture control

Moto_360_Notification_Card_TA

As the smartwatch battlefield heats up with the entry of a new player in Apple’s Watch product, sources inside Google shared a little bit about the roadmap for Android Wear and its next version. According to these sources, Google is ready to enable WiFi support on Android Wear devices. This could make the devices marginally more useful for users. Currently, a Bluetooth connection to another Android device is required for users to get notifications or user Google Now. With the WiFi support, users could roam a little further from their other connected devices. Most Android Wear smartwatches already include WiFi hardware so they should benefit from this change.

In addition to the WiFi support, sources say Google will be adding gesture control to the devices. The present version of Android Wear requires users to got through notifications or find other information using their free hand or voice controls. The new gesture control means they will be able to do something like flick their wrist to move from one notification to the next.

Google reportedly is also making it easier to navigate apps and contacts on an Android Wear device. Some of that is probably driven by support for gesture control and some of it is probably due to Google needing to make the devices even more user-friendly now that the competition is heating up.

HTC Exec: Samsung is only interested in money, Xiaomi won’t last long

htc one m9 78

MWC 2015 arguably saw a complete role reversal from Samsung and HTC, with HTC doing little new in terms of design, while Samsung brought its A-game, melding glass and metal into a unibody design that is undeniably more attractive (to most) than previous Galaxy S iterations.

Understandably, opinions have varied greatly when it comes to the One M9 vs the Galaxy S6 (and/or Edge), with some absolutely applauding Samsung’s efforts and shunning HTC’s, while others feel that HTC still has the superior product. But what does HTC think about all this? While far from a corporate statement, HTC Chief Marketing Officer Idris Mootee recently expressed his opinion in an interview, stating that Samsung is essentially in the game only for money.

HTC Chief Marketing Officer Idris Mootee recently expressed his opinion in an interview, stating that Samsung is essentially in the game only for money.

In the interview, Mootee was asked about HTC’s position in the premium market, a space that Apple and Samsung dominate. Mootee said it is important to create a connection between products and the individual, something HTC strives for. As for the competition? The exec praised Apple, saying the company has been very successfuly in connecting people to “something that’s bigger than just an electronic company.” Further, the exec says that Apple stands for something, bigger than just a brand. On the other hand, Samsung, “a massive brand and enterprise, doesn’t stand for anything except for profit”.

Wait… Samsung, a company, is interested in profit? I’m shocked. Shameless snark aside, the root point that the executive is probably trying to make is that HTC and Apple have a certain consumer in mind, and a certain philosophy that drives them. For Apple, this philosophy and customer base has helped push them to the top, for HTC, they have a loyal fanbase, even if their marketshare is minuscule. Does this same approach hold true for Samsung? While the company certainly has made changes to improve its “mass appeal” with the Galaxy S6 that may have alienated some of their original fanbase (no microSD, no-removable battery), personally I feel it’s a little harsh to suggest Samsung doesn’t hope to connect with their customers on any level.

Xiaomi's latest high-end offering, the Mi Note.

Xiaomi’s latest high-end offering, the Mi Note.

On a related note, in the same interview, the HTC exec also went after Xiaomi:

lot of people talk about Xiaomi. It’s not really our competitor. I don’t think they’ll ever make it to the U.S., for a million reasons we all know. And I think their business model has a very short lifespan.

Going after one of the fastest growing companies in the world, and throwing some shots in at Samsung as well — does the HTC exec make good points about Samsung and Xiaomi? Or is this just sour grapes from a company that has been heavily pushing the premium materials angle for years now, with only modest success?
