Google launched their 3rd birthday promotion earlier in the week, and what was 33 deals has now grown to 41. I am not even sure what is new since then, but a couple of notables are both the original Transformers movie in HD and Cold Play’s Ghost Stories album for Free. What’s funny about the Transformers movie is that the SD version isn’t free, so make sure you click on the HD version. We have the links for each as well as the link for the full list of sale items below.

Google Compare allows Californians to compare auto insurance, coming to more states soon

Auto1

In the market for new auto insurance? Live in California? Then you may want to check out the new option for Google Compare. The service allows California residents to compare auto insurance side by side. According to the announcement, Compare provides a seamless, intuitive experience for insurance carriers to connect with customers online, whether you’re a local or national provider.

For customers, you’ll be able to compare insurance on either your phone or computer in about five minutes. Carriers will be able to highlight what separates their company from the others and customers will be able to adjust deductibles, add or remove cars and see updated prices as such. Then customers will be able to purchase said insurance over the Internet or on the phone.

The service is set roll out to other states and Google Compare will add other features like ratings, reviews and local agent support. Google says that while Compare is based on a flexible cost-per-acquisition (CPA) model, payments do not influence ranking and eligibility.

Android 5.0 Lollipop now rolling out to the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3, Sprint Galaxy Note 4

samsung galaxy note 4 first look aa (6 of 19)

Samsung is continuing to roll out a steady stream of updates to their current and most recent generation of smartphones. The next two handsets on the list to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop are the T-Mobile Galaxy Note 3 and Sprint Galaxy Note 4, and both carriers have just confirmed that the update is rolling out as we speak.

The Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update, carrying build number N910PVPU1BOB7, will include all of the wonderful aesthetic changes we’ve seen from Lollipop in the past. Among others you’ll receive a ton of new security enhancements, notification improvements and many, many more. And just for the Galaxy Note 4, the update will also bring Wifi calling enhancements.

The Lollipop update for the T-Mo Note 3 will feature the build number N900TUVUFOB5, and will receive all of the visual and under the hood changes as the Note 4. Specific to the Galaxy Note 3, here are all of the changes Samsung’s website says you’ll receive in the update:

  • OS upgrade to Android 5.0 (Lollipop)
  • Wi-Fi calling experience
  • Resolved Wi-Fi calling one way audio
  • Resolved IPv6 email setup

Be warned, though. According to a few forum members, the OTA update comes in at a hefty 1GB, so be sure you’re on Wifi when you press that update button. If you don’t want to wait for the update to make it to your phone, head to Settings>About device>Software update>Check now to check manually.

Have you gotten the Lollipop update on your Note 3 or Note 4 yet? If so, how are you liking it?

Hidden Diagnostic Port on Apple Watch Could Allow for Smart Band Accessories

apple_watch_sensorAhead of Monday’s media event where Apple is expected to provide final details on the Apple Watch, a new report from TechCrunch details a hidden “diagnostic port” inside one of the channels on the Apple Watch where watch bands slip into place. While the port is currently used only for diagnostic purposes, the report argues it could be used in the future to interface with “smart band” accessories bringing additional functionality to the watch.

The port has a 6-dot brass contact array inside the groove for the ‘bottom’ strap connector slot. Several sources have confirmed its existence and placement to me. It is very similar to the connector for the Lightning connector in iPhones, as that connector currently only uses 6 of its 8 available pins. Apple recently began opening up the Lightning port for use by third parties. A source says that this port is currently for diagnostic purposes only — but that there is nothing preventing it from being a connection port for future accessories.

TechCrunch‘s Matthew Panzarino is careful to state that he has no knowledge of any plans by Apple to launch such smart band accessories, but the idea remains an intriguing one. Possibilities for such bands include additional sensors, external batteries integrated into a band, and more.

Apple revealed a number of high-level details about the Apple Watch at the device’s unveiling last September, but even now with a launch set for next month there is still much that remains unknown, including pricing details beyond the $349 starting price. Apple will undoubtedly address many of the details at Monday’s events, but some of the technical details will likely need to wait until the device launches and users and technical experts can get a closer look at the device.
