Huawei has a 7-inch, 64-Bit Octa Core LTE phablet coming soon!

mediapad-x2

Last year, Huawei released the MediaPad X1, a 7-inch tablet with LTE capabilities, and HD screen, and a solid build. This year, the company is looking to push things even further with a follow-up that boasts some very impressive hardware. Just announced in Barcelona at MWC 2015 is the MediaPad X2.

The 7-inch device features a laminated, 1200X1920 HD IPS display with promised viewing angles of 178 degrees. A 64-Bit, 2.0GHz Kirin 930 Octa-Core CPU is on board, which supports LTE Cat.6 connectivity (offering theoretical download speeds of up to 300Mbps.) along with a a 64-bit GPU Mali-T628. A 13MP rear camera (which Huawei promises has excellent low-lighting prowess) and 5 MP front camera (with F2.4 aperture) takes care of all one’s photo-snapping needs. Rounding out the specs are a 2.4G dual-band Wi-Fi antenna, Dual-SIM support (complete with Dual-LTE capabilities) and a 5000 mAh battery that should hold out for the entire day.

Huawei is eager to discuss the fact that the tablet is only 7.28mm “thick”, making it the slimmest 7-inch tablet in the world, an accomplishment bolstered by the use of “aviation aluminum metal texture”.

The device will come in two flavors: a 16GB/2GB variant in silver, and a 32GB/3GB version in rose gold. Pricing and availability have not yet been confirmed however we expect the details to come in the next few weeks or months (if not the next few hours or days).

Stay tuned to Android Authority for updates on the MediaPad X2 along with the venerable smorgasbord of mobile tech on-site at MWC 2015!

MediaTek’s standard lets your devices share their hardware

MediaTek's favorite, the generic chip shot

There are plenty of standards for sharing your media collection between devices, but what if you want to borrow a device’s camera or display? MediaTek thinks it has an answer. Its new CrossMount standard lets devices share their hardware and software when they’re on the same WiFi network, letting you use whichever components make sense in a given situation. You can use your phone’s mic to dictate voice commands to your TV, for example, or use your phone’s webcam for a video chat on your tablet.

CrossMount is an open standard based on the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) standard you probably have in some of your existing gear, so it might be easy to implement when it’s available in the third quarter of the year. A few big East Asian TV and mobile device makers have already hopped on the bandwagon, including Changhong, Hisense, Lenovo and TCL. With that said, it’s hard to know if anyone else will bite. There are still a lot of other companies that haven’t signed on, and big names like Samsung or LG may prefer to use in-house tech for any device sharing.

Not that MediaTek is putting all its eggs in one basket — it has a few chips in store as well. The darling is the MT8173, a 64-bit processor that’s supposedly the “highest performing” CPU you can get in a tablet. It mates two high-end Cortex-A72 cores with two low-power Cortex-A53 cores to deliver about six times (!) the performance of last year’s MT8125, or enough to handle 4K video with ease. And fans of mid-range phones might like the MT6753, an eight-core 64-bit Cortex-A53 processor. Neither is available just yet, though. The MT6753 won’t reach devices you can buy until the second quarter of the year, while the range-topping MT8173 isn’t poised to show up until the second half.

Huawei unveils new TalkBand B2 and N1 fitness trackers

huawei-talkband-b2

If nothing in the huge range of fitness trackers has managed to catch your eye yet, perhaps Huawei’s new entries in its TalkBand series can grab your attention.

First up, the TalkBand B2 is a direct successor to the company’s B1 fitness tracker, but this time with a more premium looking design. Along with the usual Bluetooth connectivity options, activity and sleep tracking, and familiar music controls, the B2 is actually quite a stylish tracker, with the silver and gold models both sporting a nice looking leather strap. As before, the TalkBand B2 also doubles up as removable Bluetooth headset, which is able to recognize when the Bluetooth earpiece is on the wristband or not, and switches audio to either the TalkBand or smartphone as required.

Along with the updated look, the TalkBand B2 also features an improved 6-axis sensor for more accurate movement tracking and is IP67 water and dust resistant. The tracker can last up to 5 days on a single charge and supports smartphones running Android 4.0 and up and iOS 7.0 or above.

huawei-talkband-n1

Alongside the B2, Huawei has also announced its TalkBand N1, a pair of Bluetooth headphones that can also track your fitness. Here we’re looking at IP54 dust and water resistance and up to 3 days of battery life and five hours of hands-free call time. The N1 features an extra 4GB of internal memory to put some music on too, so it doesn’t rely solely on Bluetooth connectivity.

Huawei clearly wants to innovate on the standard fitness tracking band, and both the N1 and B2 are quite interesting products. The company’s first Android Wear smartwatch also looks very promising.

Huawei Watch officially launched

huawei-watch-images-leak-7

It’s easy to forget that MWC 2015 doesn’t officially start until tomorrow, given the slew of device announcements that are happening before the show even gets under way. Flagship season is upon us, and while the stiff competition continues in the smartphone space, another area in which things are getting very interesting is in the wearables department, with the LG Watch Urbane coming soon, along with another entry from a somewhat surprising OEM. After “leaking” two promotional videos showcasing the company’s latest product, Huawei formally introduced the newest entrant to the Android Wear market, the Huawei Watch!

The Android Wear smartwatch industry is still in its infancy, and as companies continue to further refine their products, one thing that will keep coming up with every subsequent release is, “that is the best looking one yet,” which certainly holds true for the Huawei Watch, which so far, looks to have done the best job in combining the design language of traditional watches with smart capabilities. The Huawei Watch is certainly deserving of its tagline, ” Timeless design. Smart within.”

huawei-watch-images-leak3

For starters, much appreciated will be the 1.4-inch full round display, with a resolution of 400 x 400 resulting in a pixel density of 286 ppi, lacking the flat tire seen with the Moto 360. Of course, the LG G Watch R and the upcoming G Watch Urbane also feature full round displays, but what Huawei has managed to get right in this regard is to keep the bezels around the display at a minimal, the lack of which makes the LG devices stand out more than they should.

Great design is also accompanied by solid build quality, with the 316L corrosive-resistant stainless steel body and sapphire glass display, along with the choice of interchangeable leather or metal bands, allowing for a premium look and feel, not just in the smartwatch space, but when it comes to watches in general. Of course, good looks will quickly be forgotten if the device fails to deliver in terms of performance, but that shouldn’t be much of a problem, with the device packing a 1.2 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM, as Android Wear isn’t the most demanding of operating systems. 4 GB of available internal storage rounds out pretty standard fare in terms of specifications.

We know exactly what to expect when it comes to the software side of things, especially with OEM customization of Android Wear limited to only offering unique watch faces. Android Wear is also in its very early stages, and consumers are on a journey to discover what this wearable OS has in store for us. In the case of the Huawei Watch, all the standard capabilities are available, but the device does manage to pack quite a few extras, including a 6-axis sensor, heart rate monitor, and barometer. The 6-axis sensor is particularly useful for your fitness needs, as it allows the watch to recognition the motion you’re doing, such as walking, cycling, hiking, running, or sleeping, and then automatically record and sort the data accordingly.

The Huawei Watch will available in more than twenty countries at launch, with pricing information to be made available shortly specific to these individual markets. Stay tuned with Android Authority as we work to get you a hands-on look at the Huawei Watch, along with more fantastic coverage to come from MWC 2015!

Huawei unveils its first Android Wear smartwatch

Huawei didn’t just unveil one wrist-worn wearable today; it announced two. Huawei has just announced its first ever Android Wear device and, appropriately enough, it’s called the Huawei Watch. As was teased and leaked over the past few days, the Watch looks to have a rather premium pedigree, with a circular display and a design that’s more reminiscent of a luxury timepiece than a geeky smartwatch. Boasting a sapphire crystal screen, the Watch is encased in stainless steel housing and you have the choice of either a metal or leather strap. It also has the usual sensors such as a heart rate monitor and fitness tracking.

Hot Chip’s new album to feature unique covers

British band Hot Chip is giving you an incentive to buy their new album, rather than stream it.

I was already looking forward to British electronic music band Hot Chip’s new album Why Make Sense?, which comes out in May. I won’t download it from iTunes, though. I plan to buy it in physical form, because they’re doing something really cool with the LP and CD.

The Verge reports that the Wallzo-designed cover of the album has been hacked by visual artist Nick Relph. Domino Records, the music label publishing the album, will use what they call “a unique and bespoke printing technique” to offer 501 different color variations of the cover art.

Combined with subtle variations of the design, this means every copy of the album, on both CD and LP, will feature completely unique artwork.

Obviously not everyone’s cup of tea. For a band I’m already invested in thanks to a catalog on iTunes, it makes sense for me to take it to the next step.

You can view it for yourself on the Domino Records web site
