Apple Updates iMovie and Numbers for iOS 8 [iOS Blog]

Apple has begun updating its own apps for iOS 8, with iMovie and Numbers receiving the first updates. While Numbers simply brings stability, iOS 8 support and iCloud Drive compatibility, iMovie goes a bit further with brand new features like video filters, an extension for the Photos app and more.

imovieios8

What’s New in Version 2.1
– Support for iOS 8
– Enhance video clips in the Photos app using the iMovie extension
– Choose from 10 Apple-designed filters to stylize a video clip or an entire movie
– Slow down, freeze, or speed up a portion of a clip*
– Save videos and iMovie project files to iCloud Drive
– Send videos to other apps on your iOS device
– Create titles using bi-directional text
– Support for Arabic, Australian English, Hebrew, and Mexican Spanish
* 2x speed-up is available on iPhone 5s, iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display, and later devices.

The new updates allow amateur filmmakers to exert even more control over their videos, with the ability to enhance videos from directly within the Photos app and apply filters to their videos within iMovie to attain a certain look. Users can also speed up and slow down parts of videos, likely allowing users who didn’t shoot in the video camera’s slo-mo mode to make those changes.

Additionally, users can also move their footage around easier, using iCloud Drive to move videos and projects around their devices and also allowing other video editing and post-production apps.

iMovie is a universal app that’s available for $4.99 [Direct Link]

Numbers is a universal app that’s available for $9.99 [Direct Link]

Settling again: OnePlus One StyleSwap covers cancelled, mentions OnePlus 2

OnePlus One StyleSwap coversOnePlus seems to be running from one failed marketing ploy to another. This time, it is going to affect some of their existing customers after OnePlus announced it is cancelling its run of OnePlus One StyleSwap covers. The StyleSwap covers were meant to include exotic build materials, like bamboo, but OnePlus claims it has run into fundamental design issues, particularly with the interaction of the back cover and the battery, that is forcing them to cancel the StyleSwap covers in their entirety. For those that are particularly zealous about getting a StyleSwap case, OnePlus does have a small number which it intends to sell – hopefully not through a invite style system this time.

OnePlus themselves are recognizing fault for this oversight, stopping short of settling – which it invariably is – and calling it “[making] complicated decisions”. Interestingly, the post from OnePlus mentions that they won’t be making the same mistake for the “OnePlus 2“, presumably a reference to the OnePlus One’s successor. Many of us would have expected there to be a successor regardless, but OnePlus has previously said they are wholly focussed on the OnePlus One – perhaps they have started looking forward to their next device and undoing the issues of their maiden release.

What do you think about OnePlus’ backflip on the OnePlus One StyleSwap covers? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

List of iOS 8 Apps That Offer Touch ID Integration

iOS 8, released to the public earlier today, included a slew of new APIs for developers. One of those APIs opened up Touch ID to third-party apps, letting developers use the fingerprint scanner for authentication purposes within apps.

Quite a few apps have been updated to take advantage of Touch ID integration, replacing passwords and PIN codes. We’ve gathered up a comprehensive list of the most popular apps that have integrated Touch ID support below.

thirdpartytouchid
1Password (Free) [Direct Link] – Password management app 1Password allows Touch ID to replace a Master Password, providing access to the app.

LastPass (Free) [Direct Link] – Like 1Password, LastPass uses Touch ID to protect a user’s LastPass vault. It replaces the Master Password.

Amazon App (Free) [Direct Link] – The newly updated Amazon app for iOS 8 allows users to sign into their Amazon accounts using Touch ID instead of a password.

Discover Mobile (Free) [Direct Link] – Banking app Discover Mobile lets users log into their accounts using Touch ID instead of a password.

Evernote (Free) [Direct Link] – Evernote allows Evernote premium users who have protected their accounts with a passcode to log in with Touch ID instead of a number.

Mint (Free) [Direct Link] – Money management appMint allows users to substitute Touch ID for a passcode when logging into their Mint accounts.

Scanner Pro ($6.99) [Direct Link] – Scanner Pro‘s newly updated iOS 8 app lets users protect their scanned information with Touch ID.

Simple (Free) [Direct Link] – Banking app Simple lets users log into their bank accounts with Touch ID.

Lowe’s (Free) [Direct Link] – The mobile app for home improvement store Lowe’s allows users to log into their MyLowe’s personal accounts.

These are just a small sampling of the apps that have integrated Touch ID so far. Additional app developers will likely be rolling the feature into their apps in the near future, now that iOS 8 is widely available. Want more iOS 8 info? Mint on iPhone can now use your fingerprint to keep banking info safe

Mint's Touch ID check

You’re going to see a lot of apps taking advantage of iOS 8’s expanded Touch ID support in the near future, but one of the bigger improvements is already here. Mint has updated its iOS app to let you use your fingerprint to sign in rather than rely on a passcode. While it’s a simple step, it means that you can quickly check all your finances on an iPhone 5s, 6 or 6 Plus without compromising security — you can thwart data thieves with a tough-to-crack code that you’ll rarely have to enter yourself. There’s no doubt that this safeguard will spread to other financial titles in short order, but it’s good to see that an app many use daily is already locked down tight.

BlackBerry’s latest Porsche Design smartphone is real, ridiculous

Well folks, the rumors and leaks were true (as usual): the heated BlackBerry/Porsche Design love affair has once again borne fruit, this in time in the form of the new Porsche Design P’9983. At its core, we’re looking at a device running BlackBerry 10.3 along with a few Porsche-produced bits like a custom wallpaper and watchface, but you’re not going to buy this thing just for BBMing your dearest pals (did we mention you get a specific BBM PIN perfect for remote flaunting?). No, if anything, you’d buy this thing for its peculiar (some would say silly and overwrought) sense of style.

Unlike, say, the BlackBerry Q10, this new Porsche Design model looks angular, brutish and almost jubilant in its rejection of the the effete curved aesthetic most smartphone makers are running wild with. “This is a phone for getting crap done,” those harsh lines seem to say. “No time for Candy Crush here, no sir.” Combine those looks with a “glass-like” physical QWERTY keyboard, a 3.1-inch touchscreen and 64GB of internal storage and you’ve got yourself… well, let’s just say this thing’ll turn some heads. Alas, BlackBerry hasn’t said how much the P’9983 will run you, though its ancestors went for north of $2,000 when they first launched. Now, we don’t mind a little weird here at Engadget, but here’s a question for BlackBerry: Can we just have the Passport now, please?

T-Mobile to soon carry the ZTE ZMAX

tmobile_720

Whenever people think about getting their hands on a phablet, the thing that stops them is the price tag. Smartphones with huge screens are really expensive, just look at the Note 4. But it seems ZTE has a solution for you. The Chinese giant has decided to release the ZTE ZMAX along with T-Mobile, with a 5.7-inch screen, the smartphone will cost only $252 without any contract.

nexus2cee_carousel-zte-zmax-all-380x380-11The huge display features a 1280×720 resolution, other than that, it is running on Android 4.4 KitKat, 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, Adreno 305 GPU, GB of RAM, 8MP rear camera with a 1MP front-facing shooter, 16GB of internal memory and a MicroSD card slot, NFC, and a gigantic 3400 mAh battery. The phone has a slim plastic body, and the best thing is that the user interface it is on is really close to the stock Android.

If you want to get the phone through T-Mobile’s installment plan, then it will cost you $10.50 on a 24 month plan. It’s definitely not a bad phone, and it will be a good choice for people looking for a cheap alternative of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. It will be available at T-Mobile starting from Wednesday, September 24th.

Are you looking forward to grab it?

HP Slate 7 Beats Special Edition tablet now available for $250

HP has released a new slate recently with one of the longest device names I can recall, the HP Slate 7 Beats Special Edition. The name says it all. It is a 7-inch tablet by HP with Beats audio integrated, and prominently displayed on the front.

HP Slate 7 Beats

The special edition tablet is a clear refresh of their Slate 7 Extreme. The tablet is sporting a 1280 x 800 resolution 7-inch screen with a pair of front facing Beats audio tuned speakers. The tablet is running Android 4.4.2 with a NVIDIA Tegra 4 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB internal storage (with an SD card slot). For photos you have a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front shooter. Powering the device is a 4,100 mAh battery that is rated at 9 hours. The Slate also offers an amplified headphone jack, HDMI out and a Stylus. Yes, there is a stylus too.

http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f9?isVid=1&isUI=1As for extra software and perks, HP worked out a deal for 25GB of Box storage for the rest of your life. There are also a number of HP specific apps like HP ePrint, Stylus Lab Write and HP Connected Photo powered by Snapfish. Don’t forget the pre-installed Tegra Zone for all those specially tuned Tegra optimized games and such.

The Slate 7 Beats edition comes in the vibrant red you see above as well as a traditional black. Cost wise you are looking at $250. Feel free to dig in a little deeper if you are interested over at HP’s site.

What the ‘Bleep’; Private and secure voice and text app goes to public Alpha from BitTorrent

Privacy concerns are probably at an all time high as of late. While it was probably always in the back of your mind that someone, somewhere, was somehow watching, listening and stealing all your stuff, it doesn’t always seem real until it makes the news. The efforts of a number of companies have lead to some great apps and software that keeps your stuff safe, and most importantly, private. BitTorrent is one that is doing its part to help keep you, and your communications, a little further off the radar.

Bleep BitTorrent

Today BitTorrent has opened up the public release of the alpha version of a new communications, voice and SMS, app called Bleep. The alpha app is available for Windows, Mac and Android in its current state with iOS on the horizon. BitTorrent is utilizing the same principals of BitTorrent technology to connect people directly without any form of centralized connection to a server or a cloud.

Bleep BitTorrent

Here are the latest options and features in the Bleep Alpha:

  • Sign-up with email, mobile number or incognito (no Personally Identifiable Information needed)
  • Make voice calls or send text to online contacts only
  • The option to import your Google address book contacts
  • Invite friends using their email address, SMS, or their public key
  • Move an existing desktop account to a mobile device (new)
  • Receive inbound messages on all devices (new)
  • Messages are sent fully encrypted and stored locally (on your device)
  • Easily delete your encrypted message history
  • Deleting contacts is now possible on Android and Windows (new)

As with any alpha, you can expect some hiccups, glitches and potential problems. It could still be worth checking out if privacy is a huge concern of yours. If you are an extremely technical person you may want to check out the BitTorrent Engineering blog about how it all works. If you are more interested in getting in on the alpha and trying it out for yourself, then head to the alpha download page. You can grab Bleep for Windows and Mac there. They link to Android as well, but it just directs you to the Play Store to download it.

Apple TV gets Beats Music streaming and a flatter look

Beats Music on Apple TV

Your iPad or iPhone isn’t the only device getting a big iOS upgrade today. Apple is now rolling out an Apple TV update that brings not just iOS 8-savvy features like iCloud Photo and Family Sharing, but a flatter-looking interface on third-generation devices — yes, that previous super-glossy look has gone the way of the dodo. If you’re using that newer hardware in the US, you’ll also see a Beats Music app that lets you stream on-demand tunes during a living room party. The refresh isn’t going to get you any closer to that long-rumored TV set, especially if you’re still stuck on a second-gen Apple TV box, but it’s welcome all the same.
