Cortana makes sure you don’t miss nearby concerts
Microsoft’s virtual assistant comes in handy for lots of things — especially reminders. Now, thanks to a hand from SeatGeek’s ticket engine, Cortana will alert you when bands you listen to on the regular have a tour stop close by. As you might expect, in addition to date and venue info, the add-on will also provide you with ticket prices and a handy link to purchase. A Concert Watch option is rolling out to the Music section of Cortana’s Notebook, and toggling the option on will keep you informed about performances in your area. Google Now does something similar for the Android faithful, displaying concert dates based on artists from your search queries. If you’re unable to see the new feature, sit tight: it appears to be on its way to handsets.

Test code hints at future iPads with Touch ID and Apple Pay
There have been photos and vague rumors hinting that Apple’s next iPads will involve more than just a speed bump, but there hasn’t been much in the way of hard evidence… until today, that is. Hamza Sood has uncovered code in the iOS 8.1 developer beta that alludes to unannounced iPads with Touch ID fingerprint readers and, appropriately, Apple Pay support. Don’t think that you’ll be tapping your iPad to pay for goods at the local shop, however. From all indications, this is just for in-app transactions; there’s no mention of NFC. It’s also unclear when this new iOS version will arrive, although history suggests that the new iPads (and thus the finished 8.1 update) could surface in October.

iOS 8.1 Carries Hidden Settings for Apple Pay, References Touch ID Support for iPad
The first beta of iOS 8.1 seeded earlier today has not yet revealed a significant number of changes visible to regular users, but developer Hamza Sood has managed to uncover several interesting hidden settings and strings from the new version.
First, Sood shares a screenshot of a hidden Settings pane for Apple Pay inside. The pane will allow users to manage their entered credit and debit cards linked to Apple Pay, as well as define their default card, billing and shipping address, email, and phone.
The Settings screen for Apple Pay also links to a privacy disclosure outlining how the user’s card and device information and location may be sent back to Apple and perhaps passed on to the card issuer to determine eligibility and detect possible fraud.
Apple Pay will allow users to easily authenticate payments to their preferred credit and debit cards, using NFC for point-of-sale transactions with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and Apple Watch while also allowing for Touch ID-based authentication of purchase transactions in apps supporting Apple Pay. Apple has announced that Apple Pay will be launching in October, and iOS 8.1 is likely to be the update carrying that support, but the company has not yet flipped the switch to broadly enable it in this first developer seed.
While Apple has so far only announced that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and Apple Watch will be compatible with Apple Pay, Sood has also turned up evidence suggesting next-generation iPad models will include Touch ID support and Apple Pay. The evidence comes in the form of a code string addressing support for the services:
Pay with iPad using Touch ID. With Apple Pay, you no longer need to type card numbers and shipping information.
It is unclear whether the upcoming iPads will include NFC technology for point-of-sale transactions or if Apple Pay support on the iPad will be limited to app-based transactions, but Apple’s upcoming iPad have been widely rumored to see the addition of Touch ID.

Apple Receives Second and Final License Needed to Start iPhone 6 Sales in China [iOS Blog]
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has given Apple the second and final regulatory license it needs to begin selling the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in China, reports Reuters. Apple received the first regulatory license from the Chinese government earlier this month, and it is now likely that both new handsets will launch in the country soon.
A supposed internal memo addressed to Apple retail employees in China spotted yesterday stated that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus would go on sale starting October 10. The iPhone 6 originally launched in the first wave of countries on September 19, and was made available in additional countries last Friday, September 26.
Apple will likely be selling the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus through China’s three biggest wireless carriers, which include China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom. Apple is one year into its deal with China Mobile, as CEO Tim Cook stated last year that he was “incredibly optimistic” about the partnership and how it would help Apple grow its presence in the region.

Netflix and IMAX will get ‘Crouching Tiger 2’ on the same day

Netflix’s tight relationship with The Weinstein Company has scored another win, and the streaming service’s first big movie debut — but definitely not its last. The two revealed tonight that next year when the sequel to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon arrives in theaters, it will also be available streaming on Netflix at the same time. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend also shares a writer, John Fusco, with another Weinstein/Netflix team-up, the Marco Polo series that’s arriving next year. So far, studio efforts at sending movies home day-and-date with their theater release like this year’s Snowpiercer have centered around VOD, but Netflix subscribers are getting this flick at no extra cost. Back in 2011, Universal wanted to charge viewers $60 to watch Tower Heist at home instead of the theater, weeks after it debuted — this seems like a slightly better value.

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos tells the New York Times he hopes that the unique setup — available to Netflix’s 50 million+ worldwide subscribers and in select IMAX theaters on August 28th, 2015 — will inspire other studios to look outside the traditional windowed release schedule. In 2000, Ang Lee’s original movie grossed about $213 million, and it will be very interesting to see how the sequel holds up. According to the press release, it’s based on the fifth book in the Crane-Iron Trilogy. Stars Donnie yen and Michelle Yeoh are returning, and the sequel will be directed by Yuen Wo-Ping, whor served as martial arts choreographer on The Matrix 1 & 2 and Kill Bill. Netflix’s influence has changed a lot about how studios consider selling their TV shows — and their eventual reruns — and it’s diving big into the movie business. The company says this is just the first of several flicks it will try the day-and-date release strategy with, “giving consumers and exhibitors around the world unparalleled flexibility in how, when and where they enjoy a major motion picture.”

Apple Watch Being Displayed at Colette Boutique in Paris
Ahead of an event planned for tomorrow in conjunction with Apple, Parisian fashion boutique Colette appears to be preparing to show off the Apple Watch at its boutique on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris. Various photos on Twitter and Instagram show the location displaying the Apple Watch prominently, with different variants of the device being placed in colored ovals.

While it is not known as to what exactly will be shown off at Colette’s event tomorrow, hints from the invitation flyer suggest that the Apple Watch will be the highlight. Colette has also been known to be very selective of what makes it into their flagship location, and it is likely that a collaboration with Apple is part of an initiative by the Cupertino company to push its wearable device as a fashionable item.

Apple is said to be targeting an early 2015 for the Apple Watch, however reported hardware problems may push it back until February 2015 or later. The device will be available in three collections, including a high-end Edition collection which boasts an 18-karat gold enclosure and sapphire crystal display.

Just waiting on Google; Nexus 6 all but confirmed at 5.9-inch QHD display
Seems the good ol’ people at Android Police are up to their usual amount of awesomeness as they have seemingly been confirmed a few things about the upcoming Nexus 6. Obviously the name being the Nexus 6 is the first and foremost point. That clears out Nexus X as a contender. It has also been apparently confirmed that the Nexus 6 will indeed be sporting a 5.9″ QHD display which makes for 496ppi.
To butter everyone up a little bit more, they have found out that the Nexus 6 will offer up dual front facing speakers, all blacked out so they aren’t an eye sore. As for cameras the device will sport a 2MP front shooter with a 13MP rear camera with the dual LED flashes placed on either side in the ring. It will be based off the new Moto X, so you can expect a larger variant with the same aluminum frame. The power and volume rocker buttons will be a bit lower so that you aren’t over extending your thumb to do simple controls.
One confirmation that I am pretty amped up about is that the battery is supposed to be 3,200+ mAh. It should keep you going for a very, very long time. They also state that the device will be compatible with Motorola’s Turbo charging that has a claim of a 15 minute charge giving you an extra 8 hours of battery life.
Another thing you will see are some changes to the icons both on the homescreen and notifications. At least in their interpretation the WiFi and Signal bars are all solid without the breaks in them. Oh, and it is also been confirmed that Android L will in fact be Android 5.0.
Now, is there a smaller version too? It seems unlikely given that it isn’t leaking anywhere. Google could be hiding this one extremely well, or it just isn’t going to happen. That might get under your skin and be a little off-putting since the apparent Nexus 6 jumps about an inch from the Nexus 5. I am confident that once you get your hands on it and spend a few days alone in your room, you will find that 5.9-inches isn’t all that big after a while. We should have dates, prices and all the final details from Google pretty soon.
So, are you saddened by the news, or are you even more excited than before?
