Samsung Supplying Apple with Panels for iPad Air 2 and 12.9-Inch ‘iPad Pro’ Later This Year
Samsung will supply Apple with displays for the second-generation iPad Air and the 12.9-inch ‘iPad Pro’ starting later this year, reports Korean-news outlet inews24 (via Digitimes). The Korean company will begin manufacturing the displays in the coming months, as the panels are said to feature IPS technology similar to Apple’s current line of iPads.
Physical mockup of the second-generation iPad Air
If the report is legitimate, it is likely that Apple will have a steady supply of panels for its first batch of iPad Air 2 units, which may launch in time for the upcoming holiday shopping season. Some reports have also claimed that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro could be released in early 2015, which may lead to Samsung becoming the top supplier of displays for the new tablet if other suppliers are unable to meet Apple’s demands.

Apple has been attempting to reduce its reliance on Samsung as a component supplier due to tensions between the two companies as they have become top competitors in the mobile device market. However, Samsung’s technological advantages and production capacity as a display supplier have proven valuable to Apple over the years, as the Korean company even became Apple’s top iPad display supplier in Q1 2014.
The iPad Air 2 is rumored to feature a slightly thinner body, a faster A8 processor, 2GB of RAM, support for Apple Pay, and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Meanwhile, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is said to include a more powerful A8X processor to power its larger, high-resolution display.

Foxconn Hiring More Workers to Help with Strong Demand for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus [iOS Blog]
Foxconn has begun another large-scale hiring effort for its factories in Shenzhen and Zhengzhou in order to help out with iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus production, reports Digitimes.

Because working on assembly lines is no longer as attractive as before for workers in China, Foxconn is having issues recruiting sufficient numbers of workers. The company has been hosting hiring events recently to maintain its manpower, the sources added.
The report notes that Apple’s goal to launch its new handsets in 115 countries by the end of 2014 also pushed Foxconn to start another round of large-scale hiring. The company was previously said to be bringing on 100,000 new employees in June ahead of the iPhone 6 launch.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus went on sale in the first wave of countries on September 19 and saw expanded availability to more countries last Friday, September 26. Overall demand for the new devices has been greater than supply to this point, as Apple’s Online Store still shows a 7-10 day shipping estimate for new iPhone 6 orders and a 3-4 week delay for new iPhone 6 Plus orders in the U.S.

Basis unveils its first fitness tracker since getting acquired by Intel
You probably mainly think of Intel as the company trying to make 2-in-1s happen, but lately it’s been dabbling in fitness, too. It all started when the chip maker acquired Basis, the creator of what was quite possibly the most sophisticated fitness wearable on the market. Intel promised it’d make it even smarter. Or something. Now, six months later, Basis is introducing the Peak, its first fitness tracker since joining Chipzilla. And it is indeed a bit smarter. Mostly, though, it’s just a better-designed device.
Like its predecessor, the B1, the Peak is loaded with sensors capable of tracking your movement, sweat output, heat dissipation, blood flow and heart rate. This time, though, it can also track your heart rate during workouts. If that sounds like a no-brainer feature, CEO Jef Holove says the optical heart rate sensor on the old model produced too much signal noise while in motion. At the same time, an electrical heart rate sensor (the kind used in heart rate-monitoring chest straps) would have had a negative effect on both battery life as well as the size of the device. So that was out of the question. That said, Holove promises that a new optical sensor and an improved algorithm should produce more accurate results.
Additionally, the band now has a Bluetooth LE radio, helping it sync automatically with a brand-new Android and iOS app. This allows the band to behave more like a smartwatch — sort of. In an interview, Holove said he didn’t want users to be annoyed by too many pop-ups, but added that, at the very least, the band would show incoming texts and calls, along with notifications related to fitness tracking (reminders to get up and move, et cetera). Basis also plans to open its API to developers as it considers adding more apps. Really, though, the company is still figuring everything out: Holove says these smartwatch-like features will be added via a software update sometime after the device ships. That leaves Basis time to decide how many notifications is too many.
So that’s how the new fitness tracker works. But if you ask us, the real story is how much better it looks. Aside from the fact that the original B1 was on the pricey side, it was also bulky, with various buttons on the side to make up for the fact that there was no touchscreen. It wasn’t the sort of device you could wear with just any outfit. In contrast, this new Peak trades a plastic face for a thinner metal body, complete with an LCD touchscreen, and no buttons on the sides. Basis also claims the display is easier to read in sunlight, but we’ll be the judge of that when we eventually get one in to review.
Additionally, the silicone band has a soft feel and a textured design — one that manages to resemble the metal links on the Pebble Steel, at least from afar. We rather like it, but if you don’t, you can swap in any standard 23mm band. As for battery life, Basis is claiming four days — the same as the last model. Lastly, the device now meets the 5ATM standard for water resistance, which means it can safely withstand pressure equivalent to 50 meters of water (you’ve also gotta take into account things like diving, or rough water sports).
The watch costs $200, the same as the debut price of the last-gen Carbon Steel Edition, and will hit stores as soon as this week. Additionally, because Basis now has the backing of a big company like Intel, it can ship to more countries, with the UK and Canada being next on the list. The original B1, meanwhile, will go away. If you happen to own that older model, you can still sync with the existing app, though be warned: You won’t be able to use the new application, the one designed for the Peak. That’s a shame, because the new app has a slicker UI and also shows more information, meaning you don’t have to visit the web console as often. You’ll probably wanna upgrade eventually, but hey — it’s your money, not ours.

Edinburgh becomes the first UK airport to openly trial Google Glass
Google Glass is still a rare sight in the UK, but it’s proving popular amongst brands and businesses, especially when customer service is involved. Virgin Atlantic previously used the headset to welcome passengers to Heathrow, but only now is it making it’s airport debut in Scotland. Edinburgh Airport today announced plans to equip its customer service teams with Google’s smart eyewear, becoming the first UK airport (not airline) to use it on the front line. Staff will be fed real-time flight information, language translations and information about the local area, allowing them to provide assistance to travellers throughout the airport and not from behind a check-in desk. The airport says it will test Glass until December, meaning you might hear the phrase “OK Glass” if you find yourself, like many recent Ryder Cup golfers, passing through Scotland’s busiest terminal in the coming months.

eBay and PayPal will part ways in 2015
Despite spending most of 2014 arguing the opposite, eBay has today decided it will divide its popular payment and auction properties in two. Next year, the company will split PayPal away from its embattled auction site, and as a result of the restructuring eBay’s current CEO and CFO will step down from their roles, although both will take board positions. Dan Schulman, currently an executive at American Express, will become CEO of the new PayPal in 2015.
eBay has had a troubled year, with activist investor Carl Icahn pressuring the company to separate its growing online payments service away from its core business. Although eBay won a proxy battle to prevent that from happening, it’s now decided to do so of its own volition. The split is expected to complete by the middle of 2015, allowing PayPal and eBay to operate at “arm’s length” from each another, and hopefully helping PayPal to expand its payment offerings to fight against the likes of Apple Pay and Square.

Apple Watch Makes First Public Appearance at Parisian Fashion Boutique Colette
As indicated by an announcement yesterday, Apple has teamed up with Parisian fashion boutique Colette to show off the Apple Watch at the retailer’s gallery on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris for today only. The special event marks the first public appearance for the Apple Watch since being announced last month at a media event, as a long line began forming around Colette’s before the event started at 11 AM local time.
According to Engadget, Colette is displaying both the 38mm and 42mm versions of the Apple Watch to the public, while MacGeneration (Google Translate) states that the models being displayed are mostly from the Apple Watch Sport Collection while some are from the Apple Watch Collection. Also on display are some watches from the Apple Watch Edition Collection, which feature 18-karat gold casings and a sapphire display.

Customers are only being allowed to look at the devices and will not have the opportunity to actually try out the smartwatch’s capabilities. However, some journalists were allowed to try on the devices. Apple will also not be announcing any new details about the device at today’s event, as info about full pricing and battery life remain unknown.

A number of members from Apple’s industrial design team are also present at the event, including Apple’s Senior Vice President of Design Jony Ive and newly hired Apple designer Marc Newson. Both Ive and Newson were also pictured with a number of high-profile fashion personalities, including notable designer Karl Lagerfeld and Vogue magazine editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. Other fashion journalists present also include Jean-Seb Stehli of Madame Figaro and Elle magazine editor-in-chief Robbie Myers.
In addition to positioning the Apple Watch as a brand new product, Apple has also been pushing the wearable device as a fashionable accessory. The company invited top fashion editors and bloggers to its September 9 media event, and even allowed some to go hands-on with the smartwatch. Fashion publications including InStyle and Voguewere impressed with the Apple Watch, praising its design and the Digital Crown input method. However, others like The Doneger Group’s Roseanne Morrison were unimpressed with the device, calling it “not pretty” and “future techno as opposed to feminine sexy.”
At its event earlier this month, Apple said it is targeting a early 2015 launch for its wearable device. A report after the event stated that Apple would be “lucky” to launch the watch by Valentine’s Day due to software development issues. The Apple Watch will start at $349 and may run up to $1,200 for the high-end Edition version.

European Union Accuses Ireland of Giving Apple Illegal State Aid with Tax Deals
The European Commission today announced the results of its formal investigation into Apple’s tax arrangements in Ireland, accusing the company of receiving illegal state aid from the country, reports The Wall Street Journal.
In its findings, the regulatory body stated that deals between Apple and Ireland struck in 1991 and 2007 helped Irish authorities “confer a selective advantage upon Apple” that resulted in a lowering of its tax liability. The Commission also added that Apple’s increase in sales for its business in Ireland appear to be inconsistent when related to comparable operating costs that would come with growth. Furthermore, the Commission notes that there was a reported increase in “sales income” by 415%, but states that most of the profit-generating work was done elsewhere.
Accordingly, the Commission’s of the opinion that through those rulings the Irish authorities confer an advantage on Apple. That advantage is obtained every year and on-going, when the annual tax liability is agreed upon by the tax authorities in view of that ruling.
Apple’s tax policies have been questioned on numerous occasions throughout the past few years, as the company is said to utilize multiple subsidiary companies located in the Irish city of Cork to move money around without significant tax penalties. This in due in part to an exemption in the region’s law, which allows companies that are managed abroad but located in Ireland to be exempt from taxes. CEO Tim Cook defended the company’s tax practices in 2013, calling for a tax reform and simplified corporate tax policies along with lower rates for repatriation.
Apple and the Irish government will now have one month to respond to the findings published in the Commission’s reports, as the case will likely take up to 18 months to reach a conclusion. In addition to its findings regarding Apple and Ireland, the European Commission also announced that it is investigating state aid cases involving coffee company Starbucks and car maker Fiat and their arrangements with the Netherlands and Luxembourg, respectively.

The HTC One M8 Max may be less massive than its predecessor
In case you hadn’t hear enough about giant, oversized phones today, here’s some more news about another giant, except this time the news might be a little more welcome. The 2013 HTC One Max was a monster of a phone – with a display measuring 5.9-inches, it positively dwarfed its little brother off of which it was based, the HTC One M7. HTC appears to have decided this isn’t the direction it is going to continue taking its largest smartphone and is allegedly going to go with a much more friendly 5.5-inch display with its next phablet, what’s being called the HTC One M8 Max. The display will also apparently be of the Quad HD variety, which would make the M8 Max a very attractive option alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and presumably the soon-to-be-announced Nexus 6.
Other rumoured specs of the M8 Max include a Snapdragon 805, 3GB RAM, and perhaps most surprisingly, HTC will be keeping the fingerprint scanner that adorned the back of the original device. And when can we expect to see such a device to release? Q4 2014 is the quoted date, but we’re wondering if the M8 Max can rekindle the goodwill of the One M8 which has somewhat died off at this point in the year.
What are you thoughts about a smaller HTC One M8 Max? Would you prefer this over the larger Note 4 or Nexus 6? Let us know your opinion.
