Europe tells Google what to do to better protect people’s privacy

Google Sign

To say Google’s had problems in Europe would be an understatement. If it’s not been battling fines over its illegal WiFi snooping or trying to handle people’s rights to be forgotten, it’s faced numerous sanctions over its privacy policies. In a bid to ease the pressure on the search giant, privacy regulators from numerous European countries have issued set of guidelines that they believe will help it sidestep any future action. They expect Google to provide clearer reasons why it collects customer data, which include YouTube, Gmail and Google Maps, and let users know if it intends to share that information with third parties. The company came under fire in 2012, after it decided to consolidate more than 60 privacy policies into one and combine the information it collected across its popular services. The company is ready to work with authorities, though, noting that it’s open to feedback and looks forward to discussing the guidelines, suggesting Europeans may soon better understand if Google is being evil (or not).

Goodreads on iOS looks and acts a lot like Facebook now

Old books leaning against each other for sale

Short of appearing on Kindle products, since Amazon bought Goodreads we haven’t seen much new in the application. That’s all changed, however, as the iOS app has gotten an overhaul. As TechCrunch notes, upon opening it you’re greeted with a news feed that’s filled with your pals’ activity (including books reviewed and read), and you can like or comment on it as such. There’s a new navigation pane at the bottom of the application, too, that offers quick access to the home screen and a barcode scanner for adding tomes to your “to read” list, among other things. What’s more, creating a custom bookshelf for, say, your list of favorite tween-zombie-romance-nonfiction books is apparently pretty easy now as well. There isn’t an update for the Android version just yet, but we’ve embedded screenshots after the break if you want a preview of what the app’ll look like on your iDevice.

More HBO and Showtime channels can now stream via the FiOS app

Attention all ye FiOS subscribers: Verizon’s announced more new channels for the service’s mobile app. While you’re still at home, now you can stream FOX Sports 1, HBO Latino HD, MAX Latino HD and More MAX HD to the Android, iOS or Kindle Fire device of your choice. If you’re out and about, you’ll be able to check out Showtime’s Family Zone, Showcase HD and Women channels in addition to Encore’s Black and Western channels. Need more? How about making your autumn family road-trip a little easier with Starz’s Kids & Family HD option? That’s an almost sure-fire ticket to backseat silence. Sure, there are still plenty of channels missing, but it’s pretty hard to complain when you can delay hearing “are we there yet?” for at least a little while.

Argentine cops put police drones to work finding undeclared mansions

|BUS2016.JPG|BUS2|Business and Industry 2|Business & Industry 2|bills|business|capital|capitalism|cash|cents|commerce|currency|d

A lot of people fear that drones might invade their privacy (and for good reason), but put to good use, UAVs can help monitor crops, film spectacular aerial views and, in this case, capture tax-evading millionaires. Law enforcement agencies in South America have been using drones widely to aid in their investigations, such as finding drug smuggling routes. So, when they suspected that some properties registered as empty lots in a wealthy Buenos Aires area aren’t exactly “empty,” they dispatched some of their $10,000 drones equipped with cameras to take pictures of the properties. As you might have guessed, instead of coming up with pictures of dirt and overgrown bushes, the UAVs took home snapshots of huge mansions replete with swimming pools. The homeowners are now facing some serious fines, and the government expects to earn roughly $2 million in taxes from the hidden mansions.

According to The Telegraph, South American countries have been buying relatively more affordable drones from Israel and Mexico by the bulk — something that’s raised concerns among the region’s human rights activists. As Alejandro Sanchez of the Council on Hemispheric Affairs told the publication, cheap drones have great potential in the area, but “unfortunately, throughout Latin America’s history, the abuse of power tends to happen quite often.”

Stripe gave Twitter its ‘Buy’ button, and now it’s working with Facebook

Remember when Twitter rolled out its way of buying stuff from within the mobile app? Well, it turns out the startup behind the micro-blogging firm’s commerce function is powering Facebook’s payment service, too. As Recode tells it, Stripe is the sole provider for the purchase-service and also helped with the auto-fill system for Zuckerberg’s mobile payments last year. Apparently that deal ended up working out pretty well. When you impulse-buy a new watch via The Social Network, at least now you know who to blame.

LG releases new trailer for the LG G Watch R that contains really weird CGI

LG G Watch RThe Moto 360 may have been the smartwatch to watch the last few weeks, but if there’s one device that can challenge it in the short term, I believe it’s the LG G Watch R. LG‘s take on a circular Android Wear smartwatch looks much more like a traditional watch than the Moto 360, and as a result, has the opportunity to have much more mainstream appeal. LG has made quite a few emotive trailers before and after the device’s launch, and I just got an email about their latest trailer which shows off the G Watch R’s features. In short, it’s weird, but I’ll let you form your own opinions about it:

I’m all for CGI action and trailers, but why couldn’t they just do that with a real person? Anyway, back to the watch. Most of the features shown are more products of the Android Wear operating system rather than the G Watch R itself, but the features of note that others might not have include a fitness chronograph, hiking meter chronograph, world clock chronograph and water and dust resistance. It definitely looks like the G Watch R is geared more towards the burgeoning fitness sector of the market while still offering a more familiar, ‘normal’ watch experience.

Enough of what I think – what are your thoughts on the LG G Watch R and its new trailer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
