Impromptu drop test: First person in Perth to get iPhone 6 drops it on TV
Words have failed me. In some parts of the world, like here in Australia, it has already ticked over on the 19th of September, opening the flood gates to those who want to get the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus – suffice to say, may of you reading this will not be among those lining up to get a piece of the action. But in perhaps one of the more inopportune (but potentially hilarious) moments during today’s proceedings, the first person in Perth to get iPhone 6 (Perth is Australia’s most western major city) managed to drop the device on national television. Check it out:
The man, only identified as Jack, seemed to brush off the brief misadventure of his prized device as a minor event, however drop tests of the devices that have gone up in the last day have shown that they are one of the more fragile iPhones of our time:
And for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus which start from $869 AUD and $999 AUD respectively, you’d hope that it doesn’t take too many of those falls. But I feel like I’ve already talked about iPhones for too long; let’s hear what you guys think.

Netflix’s European tour comes to an end in Belgium and Luxembourg
This week began with Netflix launching streaming video service in France, and since then it’s added Germany, Austria and Switzerland to the list. Belgium and Luxembourg are the final two on the list this fall, putting them among the 40 or so countries where Netflix now offers its services. CEO Reed Hastings (pictured above at the launch event in Berlin) called out the ” incredible viewer enthusiasm” for the service’s original series, including the ones coming to Europe for the first time like Orange is the New Black and Bojack Horseman. Upcoming Netflix series will remain exclusive to the service as well — some of the existing ones like House of Cards are tied up in exclusivity deals with other broadcasters for now. Netflix is also the only place to (legally) watch a few other shows like From Dusk Till Dawn, Fargo and Penny Dreadful. No matter what country you’re in, if you’re looking for the something to watch we have a few suggestions on how to find it. If you just want the exclusives though, a recent tweak to the website means you can just search for “Netflix” and they will appear.

Love is in the air at the Tokyo Game Show
Dating simulation games are nothing new in Japan; and in fact, there’s something for both boys and girls. This particular booth at the Tokyo Game Show was chiefly promoting Voltage Inc.’s romance mobile apps to the ladies, but with a twist: The company brought in some “attractive models” to let attendees “experience the world of romance apps in real life.” Japanese girls (and some guys) were actually lining up to try a scene from one of the three games, and needless to say, it’s rather entertaining to watch their reactions — which were unsurprisingly consistent in general — as the male characters wooed them with a “kabe don.” And if you don’t know what that is, educate yourselves with our video after the break.

Sony’s SmartEyeglass prototype makes Google Glass look chic
As Sony’s smartphone division continues to struggle, the company is working out what it needs to return to profitability. Does it concentrate on the high-end market dominated by Apple and Samsung, or does it try to appeal to customers looking to get their very first smartphone? One thing you might not expect is for the company to push forward with the release its own smart eyewear, a Google Glass clone of sorts, that connects to its devices to superimpose images, videos and text into the wearers view. “SmartEyeglass,” as it’s known, looks like a bulky pair of 3D glasses that have been modified to include a 3-megapixel camera, accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, brightness sensor, a microphone and a pretty large battery pack.
Sony says that while SmartEyeglass is currently in the prototype stage, it can already connect to a range of smartphones (running Android 4.1 and up) to deliver hologram-like visuals through its lenses. The lens is just 3mm thick, 85 percent transparent and sucks up less energy thanks to its monochrome display. Unlike Google Glass, which can host its own apps, Sony wants developers to build smartphone apps that can then connect to SmartEyeglass over Bluetooth, so it’s opening its software kit today to get things started. It hopes to put the prototype hardware on sale by the end of March 2015, after which it’ll look to get it into consumers’ hands.

Notion Ink quietly releases Cain, a 10.1-inch Windows 8 tablet
The Notion Ink Adam was a tablet with big dreams, but it hit the market with a loud flop. It’s successor, the Adam II, whooshed by with almost no public notice at all. Now the company is back, but it’s not trying to redesign the Android tablet anymore. No, this time the company is building a Windows 8 tablet: the Notion Ink Cain. The Cain is a 10.1-inch, 1.8GHz Intel Atom-powered tablet with 2GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage and a detachable magnetic keyboard. Despite a sleek design and a rather snazzy folding keyboard case, however, the Cain appears to be a fairly straightforward implementation of Windows 8: no custom apps, or skinned interface included. Less bold than the company’s other ventures, but less risky too.
There’s no mention of the new tablet on Notion Ink’s website, but it’s currently available for order at Snapdeal, one of India’s most popular online marketplaces. Interested? The slate can be had for 19,990 Indian Rupees, or about $327. Check out the full product page at the source link below.

Researchers use cell-phone data, not precogs, to predict crime in London
Just this year we’ve seen open data give rise to recreations of Denmark in Minecraft, the ability to compare cities at the same scale and also collections of geo-mapped tweets and traffic lights. But what about a practical application for all of that info, one that has a more tangible benefit to society, like, say, crime prediction? That’s what the University of Trento in Italy had in mind with its “Once Upon a Crime” study. The researchers coupled freely available (and anonymous, aggregated) demographic and mobile phone data with real crime data to forecast where in London an infraction might occur. Just how accurate was it? The Italian scientists say that their predictive algorithm was on-point, accurately anticipating whether an area would have either high or low levels of vice, 70 percent of the time. No, it’s not quite enough to let Chief Anderton and co. start running wild just yet, but it could be a way to help cities struggling with budget woes decide what areas need more (or fewer) police patrols.

Twitter’s iOS 8 upgrade brings a new look for profiles
If (for some reason) you absolutely hate how profiles look on Twitter for the iPhone, you may want to fire up the App Store and download the latest update. It comes with a brand new design for profiles, which brings your bio front and center (no more swiping needed to see it) and adds separate timelines for your uploaded photos/inevitable GIFs) and favorite tweets. This new profile will show up for both iOS 7 and iOS 8 users, so you can already enjoy it even if you don’t want to delete apps and make room for Apple’s new mobile platform just yet. You do, however, get something extra if you’ve already upgraded: the power to retweet, follow and favorite posts right from the notification center.

iFixit cracks open an iPhone 6 Plus to get at the massive battery inside
Need something to make the wait for your new iPhone easier? Watching the crew at iFixit go at a brand new iPhone 6 Plus with their screwdrivers, spudgers and iSclacks probably won’t help, but at least it will pass the time. They’re in the middle of pulling Apple’s XL-sized phone apart, and while there’s not a lot new to report (it’s a phone, and it has 1GB of RAM) the pics are always entertaining. The 6 Plus’ 5.5-inch display also leaves room for a larger battery, and now we know that it’s a 2915 mAh unit, about twice the size of the one in the iPhone 5s, and slightly bigger than the battery in the Galaxy S 5.

Oh Canada: Next stop for Google Glass looks like Canada
News around Google Glass has died down a lot over the last year. While the wearable craze is still alive and well, the glasses form factor has gone a bit too quiet lately. Still, that’s not going to stop Google spreading Glass everywhere else. There’s no official word yet, however the above image seems to suggest that Google Glass has regulatory approval to be sold and used in Canada.
This, of course, is only an indication that Google Glass will eventually be sold in Canada, but gives us very little to go on in terms of timing and pricing. Google Glass is already available in the U.S. and U.K. so it’s only a matter of time before it becomes available in more corners of the world (Australia’s still waiting – hint hint).
What do you think about Google Glass becoming available in Canada? Any Canadians out there interested in getting some Glass on your face? Let us know your thoughts below.
