Goat-inspired prosthetic leg is designed to give rock climbers better footing

Design student Kai Lin learned this while researching artificial limbs in a prosthetic-design class at Pratt Institute — traditional leg prosthetics don’t have enough grip or articulation to facilitate effective climbing. Lin’s solution to the problem is almost elegant in its simplicity. He designed a prosthetic leg inspired by one of nature’s best rock climbers: the mountain goat.
Why a goat? Well, aside from the amazing YouTube videos one can find of the creatures scaling near vertical rock faces, Lin found that the cupped surface of the goat’s hooves create natural suction on hard surfaces. Better still, the hard outer shell gives the animals stable footing on steep rocks. Inspired by the hoof, Lin created three prototype stilts to help him refine the footing for his prosthetic design, eventually settling on a mid-sized foot with a hoof-like sole.
Does it work? Unfortunately, we don’t know just yet. Lin is still in the design phase, and hasn’t reached the point where he’s comfortable producing a working prototype. ‘Deep Web’ is a show based on the Silk Road story
If the hacker bits in House of Cards‘ second season stoked a fire in you for the illicit parts of the internet, maybe Spike TV and Gary Oldman (pictured above) have you covered. The former has partnered with the latter and a few others to produce a series called Deep Web about, you guessed it, the hidden version of the internet where one can buy just about anything you could imagine. Like hacking software, drugs and automatic weaponry, for example. The show is based on Ross Ulbricht’s ascension to the top of the online underworld and the Silk Road’s bitcoin shopping mall, according to Deadline. Other details are scarce at the moment including when we might actually see it and how fictionalized it’ll be (our guess? pretty heavily), but there’s plenty of time for that info to surface, we’d imagine. For now, let’s just hope there are 100 percent less guinea pigs and obscure techno than in what we’ve seen recently.

Another render of the Oppo N3 leaks out, looks nothing like the previous rumour
And this is why they’re called rumours. We reported earlier this week that Oppo has started teasing its latest device, expected to be called the Oppo N3, which will be announced in October in an event at Singapore – that much we know is true. What might not have been true about the story we reported was the shape of the N3, which allegedly made use of a rather unique swivel camera protrusion. Today, another render appears to have leaked out (which you can see above), and as you will notice, this one looks nothing like the device we reported on earlier. One of these leaks is wrong – if they both aren’t, of course – and it’s hard to really say which one looks ‘more’ correct.
If today’s leak is to be believed, it looks like Oppo may have opted for a more traditional device this time as this one doesn’t appear to have a swivel camera, but that’s all we can really tell from this angle. Whether or not any of this information is actually true is now up in the air, so unless another leak comes along before October, it’s suffice to say that we’ll be waiting for the official word from Oppo before we make anymore guesses.

1Password for iOS Available for Free Ahead of iOS 8 Launch [iOS Blog]
AgileBits’ popular iOS password manager 1Password is now available for free ahead of tomorrow’s public release of iOS 8. The app has usually been offered for $17.99, although it did see a price cut last month which brought it to $9.99.
It is unknown as to why AgileBits has decided to offer 1Password for free, however the app will soon receive a significant update to take advantage of some of the new features in iOS 8, including support for Touch ID access and the ability to input saved passwords in Safari and ot1her apps.

Misfit Flash is a new $50 full featured fitness and sleep tracker wearable
The first Misfit wearable was the Misfit Shine. It is a small little puck like device that resides in a rubber strap for your wrist. Misfit also had a small clip, a necklace and even a pair of socks for you to place the puck inside to help you track your walking and such. We had a set that we received for review at CES 2014. We had a good time with them and they certainly looked pretty slick. Now Misfit has announced a new tracker that goes to the opposite side of the coin and is targeting the sporty thrifty people out there with its latest Misfit Flash.
The Misfit Flash resembles the Shine except it is made from a soft-touch plastic that is waterproof to 30 meters (Shine is 50 meters). The new Flash will be offered in a variety of flashy sporty colors such as Frost, Onyx, Fuchsia, Zest and Wave. There will be a total of 7 color offerings at launch time this October. Similar to the Shine it runs on a single CR2032 coin cell battery with a battery life of about 6 months. Just like the Shine it will track your steps, calories burned, distance traveled along with sleep duration and sleep quality.
“Flash is the only fully featured activity and sleep tracker in the world for under $50, making it an incredible value,” said Tim Golnik, VP of Product and Design at Misfit.
Interestingly enough, the Misfit Flash was created in partnership with The Coca-Cola Company. Apparently they are a long-term strategic partner of Misfit. Anyways, to sum up the whole announcement, Misfit launched a plastic version of the Shine to appeal to a broader market of more sporty individuals that couldn’t wrap their head around a Shine at $99.99.
While I enjoyed my time with the Shine, they really need to dump some time and money into the Android companion app. I understand there is a pretty decent tie in from Apple with John Sculley in the mix and the company name, Misfit, stemmed from Steve Jobs, but if you are going to go cross-platform, make the apps work and be as useful as competing OS platforms are. Point in case, the iOS Misfit app is pretty outstanding, where as the Android app lacks a large portion of the functions and has some serious sync issues. Maybe an update is coming with the release of the Flash to help ease the pain. Hey, I can hope right? Regardless of that small caveat, you might be interested in the Misfit Flash. T-Mobile announces the ZTE ZMAX; An ultra affordable 5.7-inch Android device
Looking for a big screen on a small budget? T-Mobile has you covered with the announcement of the latest device headed to the unpredictable carrier. The ZTE ZMAX will be headed to magenta next week with some interesting specs and price tag.
The ZMAX manages to pull down a 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720. That isn’t a quad HD screen, but on a 5.7-inch device is it doable for an average consumer who wants size. Under the hood it packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor at 1.2Ghz and is backed with 2GB of RAM. Internal storage locks in at 16GB, with less user storage of course. It does offer an SD card slot along with NFC. For photos the ZMAX packs a modest 8MP rear camera and a paltry 1MP front shooter. The whole device will launch with Android 4.4. Looking at the images of the device, it appears to be a pretty stock looking experience too. That doesn’t always mean anything though, but we will remain hopeful. What is almost impressive about the ZMAX though is the fact that they packed a 3,400 mAh battery inside a shell that is just 0.35-inches. They have the battery rated for 14 hours of talk time and 15 days standby time.
It certainly isn’t the prettiest of devices ever made and whats up with those capacitive keys at the bottom?!?!!? T-Mobile fails to offer up an official price tag, but they do list out the EIP price of $0 down and $10.50 a month for 24 months. Math wise that pans out to $252 full price. That isn’t to shabby considering the specs. It is set to be available September 24th. with a MetroPCS version following later this year.

Yes, Unreal Engine 4 is coming to Samsung Gear VR too
The latest game development toolkit from Epic Games supports Oculus Rift and Sony’s Project Morpheus, but what about virtual or augmented reality on mobile devices? That’s coming, too — and apparently pretty soon. Road to VR has noticed that on Epic’s publicly-accessible “Unreal Engine 4 Roadmap” task-board two new bits were added to the VR to-do list: Samsung Gear VR and Google Project Tango support. They’re labeled as September and October projects, and as Road to VR notes, the VR project category has been empty since Oculus’ and Sony’s features have been completed. If anything, this yet another example of just how versatile Unreal Engine 4 is when it comes to what the engine’s games can run on. Maybe Amazon’s Fire phone is up next? After all, there’s precedent (sort of).

Official iPhone 6 Plus Reviews Report 1 GB RAM [iOS Blog]
Earlier today, a screenshot from iPhone monitoring app System Status suggested Apple’s larger iPhone 6 Plus might be limited to 1 GB of RAM, much like the iPhone 6.
Several iPhone 6 Plus reviews, which were released this evening, appear to confirm that hypothesis, with multiple sites reporting the device has 1 GB of RAM. In its review, Macworld says that the iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus both “appear to have the same 1GB of memory as last year’s devices.”
TechRadar has a similar claim, stating that both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus have 1 GB of RAM, as does The Guardian, listing 1GB of RAM in the specifications of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus. T3, TechRadar‘s sister site, said the iPhone 6 Plus’s 1 GB of RAM seemed to handle all tasks thrown at it fairly well.
The 1GB of RAM inside, again, doesn’t sound too beefy, but seemed to handle the new multi-tasking features well and propped up some simultaneous emailing, video watching and HD gaming. Internal tweaks such as the Metal graphics upgrade we must wait to see the benefit of, but the new BioShock port is one of the most demanding games on iOS currently and it performed great, as did The Wolf Among Us (check out that colour spectrum) and Asphalt 8 (speeeeeeed).
Aside from the size difference between the 4.7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 devices, the appearance of 1GB of RAM in both phones suggests that they have nearly identical internal specifications, offering the same A8 chip and memory. The larger iPhone 6 Plus does, however, have a larger battery due to its size and it also offers optical image stabilization as a differentiating factor.
