Amazon listing details new smaller, high-res ‘Voyage’ Kindles
You don’t need supernatural powers to realize that it’s been 12 months since a Kindle Paperwhite refresh, ergo we could be due a new one. It also kinda helps when Amazon’s own web-store lets slip a little bit of info. Some eager searchers spotted a listing for Kindle “Voyage” on Amazon’s German and Japanese stores. The listings don’t have too much information, but do mention a 300 ppi display on the 6-inch device that comes in the usual WiFi and 3G versions. The 112 x 116 mm dimensions suggest the Voyage will be smaller and at 8mm deep, the “thinnest Kindle up to now” (thanks Google translate). The (now-pulled) product page was even kind enough to give us details on price — $190 or $250 with 3G — all set for a November 4th launch date. It could be that the Paperwhite name is on the way out, too, with the with the Spanish version of this support page replacing “Paperwhite” with the new “Voyage” name.

Fujifilm packs a ton of power in the X30 point-and-shoot
The highlight for Fujifilm at this year’s Photokina is undoubtedly the X100T and its brilliant hybrid viewfinder, but the X30 point-and-shoot is also not to be missed. Internally, the $599 compact is nearly identical to its predecessor, the X20, with the same 12-megapixel, 2/3-inch CMOS sensor and f/2.0-2.8, 28-112mm lens, but it features a few improvements that might make an upgrade worthwhile for at least a few select Fuji fans. The most significant boost is a new 2.36M-dot electronic viewfinder, which provides a full 100-percent view, along with a new tilting 3-inch high-res LCD.
The X30 also includes dual control rings around the lens, letting you zoom with one and adjust settings, such as aperture or shutter speed, with the other. A new processor enables faster SD card write times while an improved battery gets you 470 shots on a full charge, compared to just 270 frames with the X20. You also get integrated WiFi, with full control of the camera via a smartphone app, including touch focusing, shutter speed, aperture, self timer, flash and white balance adjustments. The camera performed very well during our test, with speedy focus and a fast EVF response time. And it looks fantastic to boot. The Fujifilm X30 ships next month for $599.

Create your own Moto X: Moto Maker now available in the UK
Motorola’s new Moto X might not be sale in the UK yet, but that isn’t stopping the company from letting customers create their own designs ahead of its release. Today, for the first time, Brits can get to grips with Moto Maker, Motorola’s web-based customisation tool, allowing them to choose the finish, colours, cases, storage and even engraving options for their Moto X before putting down (at least) £419.99 to buy one. Moto Maker comes to the UK with a number of additional customisations in tow, including a new leather finish (that’ll cost £20 extra and adds to the traditional plastic and wooden options) and a choice to include metal accents on the power and volume buttons, speaker grilles and that big Motorola logo on the back. On the subject of storage, you’ll be forced to pay an extra £40 if you want the 32GB model, as the Moto X doesn’t come with a microSD slot. Currently, you can only use Moto Maker to create your bespoke design and email it to yourself, allowing you to pick it back up and apply it when the Moto X eventually goes on sale later this month.

Philips aims to relieve persistent pain with smartphone-controlled devices
Philips will soon launch a couple of iPhone- and iPad-controlled devices, but they’re not the company’s usual phone docks or Hue smartlight models — they’re gadgets designed to help suppress persistent pain. The first device (above) called PulseRelief uses Transcutaneous Electronic Nerve Stimulation or TENS technology, which delivers electric pulses straight to your nerves. That’s supposed to prevent pain signals from reaching your brain and to release endorphins, chemicals that make you feel good and happy. There are tons of similar gadgets out there (search for “TENS device” on eBay and Amazon to see what we mean), but Philips’ version lets you choose from 60 intensity levels through its smartphone app.
Philips created PulseRelief to target those suffering from musculoskeletal pain, but its other high-tech pain reliever called BlueTouch was made to relieve muscular back pain, in particular. If BlueTouch (below) looks familiar, it’s because an older version has long been available for sale. The device shines blue LED lights against your skin, which Philips claims can induce the body to release Nitric Oxide that increases blood flow and encourages the natural healing process. Like PulseRelief, this iteration comes with a phone app, where you can choose from various treatments. Both devices will be out in stores later this September and online in November, but make sure to read up on the medical claims behind the devices (the old BlueTouch had its share of doubters) and consult your doctor before getting one.

Facebook’s rumored ‘Moments’ app will help you share privately
Facebook’s megaphone-like approach to sharing makes it less than ideal for more private missives. Sharing private images or jokes with select people is something of a test of nerves. One slip of a drop-down menu, and your intimate photo could go global, rather than just to your “mates” privacy group. But, Facebook wants you to share in anyway, and to anyone you like with confidence it seems. According to TechCrunch, the social network’s working on a “Moments” mobile app to help. Once again, Facebook would be taking a single-focused idea out of the main mobile app into a standalone one if sources are correct. The Moments app will reportedly use a visual, tile-based interface for you select the group or sub groups of people you wish to share your — we assume — moment with. If this sounds a lot like Google+’s “circles” mechanism, that’s because it does. There’s no word when Moments could find its way onto phones, so for now, you’ll just have to run the gauntlet with current tools to avoid having your mom comment on bachelor(ette?) party photos.

Virgin Media’s TiVo design makeover begins with an updated iOS app
For the first time in four years, Virgin Media is going to give its TiVo user interface a much-needed facelift. Gone is the rich red that previously adorned menus, replaced with a new “plum” colour (purple to the untrained eye), that’s expected to reach set-top boxes in October. As we noted last week, Virgin is bringing its TV Anywhere apps in line with the new UI, and luckily for iOS users, that rollout begins today. While you’ll first notice the colour change when you update, Virgin Media has also made a couple of tweaks to the interface to fall in line with the iOS 7/iOS 8 aesthetic. Those aging rounded buttons have have swapped gradients for a flat white design and the updated menus help give the app a more modern feel. Unfortunately for Android users, Virgin says the revamped app is still a few months from completion, but the company has released a small update to include support for more Android 4.4 (KitKat) devices.

‘Goat Simulator’ is now ruining picnics and butting heads on iOS and Android
Can’t wait for the Xbox One version of Goat Simulator‘s absolute madness and have an iOS device? (Update: Or an Android one?) Well, then Coffee Stain Studios has you covered. The team’s not-at-all serious (or realistic) depiction of goat life is now available for your Apple-branded mobile gizmos, as spotted by the ever vigilant Wario64. A majority of the game’s charm comes from how intentionally glitchy and broken it is, so don’t be alarmed if, say, your hoofed avatar’s head gets stuck inside a wall. Or worse. Depending on where you live, though, it might be cheaper to keep an actual goat that to download this $5 game to your smart device of choice.

LG to Supply Apple Watch Displays, Apple Aiming to Sell 50 Million Units in 2015 [iOS Blog]
LG Display will supply the AMOLED displays for the Apple Watch when it launches in 2015, reports Digitimes. According to the report, Apple is also expecting to ship five million units of the wearable device a month, and is aiming to sell more than 50 million Apple Watches in 2015.
Apple was also said to be in talks with Samsung to provide AMOLED panels for the device, however the company ultimately decided that all displays for its smartwatch would come from LG. The news is similar to a report last October from The Korea Herald, which noted that Apple was close to striking a deal with LG to supply panels for its wearable after talks with Samsung were said to be “not productive.”
The Apple Watch will begin shipping in early 2015 and come in two sizes of 38mm and 42mm (1.5 and 1.7 inches), with six available casing materials and six different bands. The Apple Watch will be also organized into three editions, including the entry-level Apple Watch Sport collection, the stainless-steel Apple Watch collection, and the high-end luxury Apple Watch Edition collection. Pricing will start at $349.

iOS 8 doesn’t play well with Dropbox’s automatic backup feature
You excited that iOS 8’s scheduled to land on your iPhones and iPads later? Cool, but if you avidly use Dropbox to back up your photos and videos, the new software comes bundled with a dash of disappointment. According to Dropbox, its service has an unfortunate compatibility issue with Apple’s latest mobile platform that specifically affects the Automatic Backup function. The new software apparently prevents both Dropbox and its photo managing app Carousel from properly uploading photos and videos to the cloud.
The company says it’s working with Apple to resolve the issue, but for now, it advises those who choose to upgrade their software to refrain from deleting their files until it issues a fix. Also, you’ll get a Dropbox and a Carousel update soon (if you haven’t yet) that temporarily suspends Automatic Backup to prevent confusion on which files have actually been uploaded. Of course, you can always upload photos and videos through a computer, but if you’re too lazy to find that cord, you may want to cross your fingers for a quick patch.
iOS 8 compatibility issue may prevent Dropbox and Carousel from backing up photos and videos. Fix coming soon. Info: http://t.co/gsGo4iuR4k

Sony expects losses to quadruple because of its smartphones
Once again recalibrating its bad news for the latest financial quarter, Sony has quadrupled its forecast loss for the financial year and it’s down to those Xperia smartphones. The company already cut its forecast for smartphone sales in July, and this latest reassessment – to the sum of a 180 billion yen ($1.7 billion) “impairment” – comes following an internal review of it mobile arm in mid-summer. It found that the mobile arm was focused on “achieving significant sales growth” which apparently is no longer the game plan: the company is now aiming towards reducing risk, volatility and “more stable profits”. (Some profit is likely a good place to start.) The revision will also factor new strategies depending on regions, and a focus on its premium smartphones — and likely a reduction in its midrange devices.
