Now Google Play Movies & TV for iOS works offline too
Before you leave the house for that trip to the middle of nowhere (or if you simply have shoddy internet connection), make sure to update your Google Play Movies and TV for iOS. The latest version gives you the power to save any flick or TV show episode you want to watch offline at a later time — the same feature Google added to the app for Chromebooks a few months ago. Hopefully, everything you download (over WiFi only, as always) gets you through a rough trip or a particularly bad day for streaming. The update should hit your iPhones and iPads soon, but those who don’t have the app yet can download it from iTunes.

LG G3 Beat goes on pre-order in India at a price of INR 24,999
In July, LG unveiled its mid-range smartphone, the LG G3 Beat. Now, it appears that the smartphone is ready to be launched in India as it has been put up for pre-order by Infibeam for a price tag of INR 24,999 with a tentative shipping date of September 13. The LG G3 Beat features a 5-inch HD IPS LCD display, Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, 8MP camera and a 2540 mAh battery. Thanks to its ‘Floating Arc Design’ with smooth curved sides and tapered edges, the G3 Beat looks similar to the LG G3.
Unlike the Xperia Z3 Compact which was launched by Sony last week, the G3 Beat comes with downgraded specifications and features when compared to the LG G3. The screen resolution has been dropped to 1280 x 720 pixels, the camera has a lower resolution of just 8MP and its processor has been downgraded to Snapdragon 400.

Android 5.0 Lion? New leak shows “Nexus 5 2014″ running interesting software
Get your grain of salt ready, because you’re going to need it for this rumour. According to a leak from EMT Leaks, a device specified as a “Nexus 5 2014” has been spotted and boasts some very interesting specs – more on that later. Perhaps most interest among all the details is the fact the device is running software called “Android 5.0 Lion“. Apart from being a bit left field, “Lion” is actually another trademark of Nestle à la the Lion Bar, which begs the question: is Google still in cahoots with Nestle for future builds of Android? If true, this would be the second time Google has switched out their internal build name, rumoured to be Lemon Meringue Pie (LMP), the first being of course Android KitKat, previously known as Key Lime Pie.
The second most interesting thing about this rumour is the device itself. We would have expected the device to be the Nexus 6 or Nexus X, but the appearance of a “Nexus 5 2014″ suggests this is the true name of the device, or Google will be refreshing the device along with a larger phablet device. Whatever the case, the device looks great: Snapdragon 805, 3GB RAM, and 12MP camera – a definitive upgrade from its predecessor. But as we mentioned at the start, we’d definitely suggest taking this news with a grain of salt as we can’t be sure any of this is true.

Moto X has me excited for ‘Nexus X’
The new Moto X has been announced, and it has lived up to everything I had hoped it to be. Aluminum metal sides, wooden and leather backs, 5.2 inch 1080p AMOLED screen and the oh-so-speedy Snapdragon 801 chip makes this phone incredibly enticing.
Everything seems great to me about this phone, and I can’t hate on the 2300mAh battery yet until Scott Webster discusses it in his review, because I believe Motorola has a few tricks up it’s sleeve when it comes to battery optimization. Motorola’s own website claims the battery lasts up to 24 hours mixed use, but really that doesn’t say anything concrete.

It does scare me however that Motorola is selling not just one, but two battery enhancing accessories separately. Their innovative turbo charger will sell for $34.99 which gives the phone 8 hours of battery life in a 15 minute charge, and they will also sell portable chargers like the Power Pack Micro for $39.99 which has a battery capacity of 1500mAh, or a 65% charge for your Moto X. Really cool accessories, but it doesn’t exactly praise the battery inside the phone itself…
While the battery life of this phone had a bit of my attention, my mind was on a bigger picture. The upcoming Nexus phone by Motorola.
This “Nexus X” is not official yet by any means, but multiples leaks and sources tell that Motorola is indeed making the phone, and the launch time of this year’s Moto X is similar to lats year’s LG G2, the phone the Nexus 5 was based off of.
This has me really excited that the “Nexus X” is based off the Moto X because of a few reasons.
First, the return of the AMOLED display to a Nexus phone. I loved the screen on the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus because there are some really cool things you can do with an AMOLED display, such as active notifications by Motorola.
Second, premium materials on a Nexus phone. My smartphone is something I hold and use everyday, and the way it is built and how it feels is important to consumers. Nexus phones haven’t really had a premium build to them, mainly because of cost, but things might change this time around under the construction of Moto. The Moto X has beautiful metal sides and metal front-facing speakers and is less expensive than the Galaxy S5, HTC One and others, so I can see this coming to the next Nexus. Hopefully.
Finally, customization for the next Nexus. Moto’s new thing is Moto Maker, and it’s a really cool concept to be able to customize the material and colors for parts of your phone. Moto Maker was created under the leadership of Google, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t bring this kind of customization to their popular Nexus phones. It would be a very refreshing thing to see besides the flat black design it’s always had. The Nexus 5 is the first Nexus phone to see some color with the launch of the red model later in its lifespan. Imagining a wooden or leather back on a Nexus phone has me putting $350 aside right now, assuming the traditional price returns.
That’s my thoughts and hopes for the Google flagship next month, what’re you most excited for?

Watch this soft robot walk through snow and get squished by a car
Soft robots aren’t just supremely flexible; they can take quite a bruising, too. If you need proof, a team of Harvard and Cornell researchers has developed a rugged soft robot that can survive conditions which would wreck stiffer machines. As you’ll see in the video below, the automaton’s silicone shell has no trouble wading through snow, walking over fire and enduring the crush of a car’s tires. It’s a bit of a workhorse as well, with upgraded pneumatics that can carry loads up to about 18 pounds. This is still early technology — the bot doesn’t move quickly, and its battery lasts a mere two hours — but it’s proof that squishy robots are well-suited to working in dangerous situations.

Reseachers are testing a breathalyzer for cancer
For doctors, catching lung cancer can be tricky even on a good day. That’s why a new study presented in front of the European Respiratory Society in Munich today seems so titillating: you see, researchers may have figured out a way to detect lung cancer in patients just by measuring the temperature of their breath.
The study saw 82 people (40 with a positive diagnosis and 42 with a negative diagnosis) get tested with a breath thermometer commonly used for people with asthma. The results? Researchers discovered that the patients diagnosed with lung cancer tended to exhale warmer air than those who didn’t, and they claim to have found the temperature threshold that seems to accurately signify when cancer is present. You’d be forgiven for thinking this whole thing sounds a little crazy. After all, the process now usually involves doctors scrutinizing CT scans or performing biopsies on lung tissue, and similar efforts that involved testing a patient’s breath seemed way more complex. There’s still plenty (and we mean plenty) of testing that needs to happen, but there’s now hope for something seriously huge: a dead-simple, totally non-invasive cancer test that you could take at your local doctor’s office some day.

Verizon will sell the Moto 360 with a metal band on November 11th
If you refuse to wear a Moto 360 smartwatch until it’s equipped with a metal wristband, you now have a firmer date than “fall” to mark on your calendar. Verizon says that it will ship this slightly ritzier version of Motorola’s wearable in both black and silver on November 11th for the expected $300. It’s not certain that Verizon will be the first out of the gate with the extra-shiny 360, but its timing should serve as a good yardstick even if you don’t plan to buy your watch at Big Red. And don’t forget: if two months is simply too long to wait, you can always buy the leather edition now and upgrade to metal later for $80.

SheTaxi’s Uber-for-women service launches in NYC later this month
As sad as it is to admit it, there are a lot of creeps in this world, which is why we wouldn’t blame anyone for feeling nervous about getting a late night taxi. That’s why a new startup is launching SheRides in NYC and SheTaxi in Westchester County and Long Island, an app-based car service for women that only employs female drivers. In the same way that Lyft operators adorn their hoods with a hot pink mustache, SheRides drivers will wear a pink scarf to identify themselves to passengers. The app will ask a user if they’re female, or if there’s a woman in their group, and if not, they’ll be directed to another app-based car service.
Now, the app will launch on September 16th for iOS users, with the New York Times reporting that an Android version will come “eventually,” but its devs still have a hurdle to overcome. A spokesperson for the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission told Motherboard that SheRides’ drivers will have to follow the same rules as their yellow cab counterparts, which means they’re prohibited from refusing anyone service. The spokesperson wouldn’t elaborate on how that will affect the app’s launch, but if it does become operation and successful, then users can expect the service to grow further. Its creators plan to bring it to Washington, Chicago and Miami within the next year, even if it is a sad state of affairs that something like this should exist.
