Toshiba’s Canvio AeroMobile Brings 128GB of Wireless SSD Awesomness [Review]

Those that have followed me and AndroidSPIN for a while know that I have this crazy obsession, perhaps unhealthy addiction, with storage. Not so much cloud storage, although I do have a number of those accounts spread all over the place as well. More so I have an addiction to physical storage. Be it micro SD […]

Super-sensitive chip can sniff out bombs from 16 feet away

An officer and his dog check for bombs at San Francisco's airport

Let’s face it: the theatrical security procedures at airports aren’t going away any time soon. However, they might just get more tolerable if a team of Israeli researchers bring a new, extremely sensitive bomb detection chip to an inspection line near you. The prototype sniffs for explosives by using groups of nano-scale transistors that react to tiny electrical changes when certain chemicals pass by. And we do mean tiny — the chip can raise alarms if there are just a few molecules found out of 1,000 trillion. For those not keeping score, previous techniques will ‘only’ raise a red flag in the molecules per billion range.

The result is a bomb detector that can work in some very, very challenging circumstances. Depending on the material, the component can recognize explosives from as far as 16 feet away; inspectors wouldn’t have to invade your personal space just to give you the all-clear. It can also ferret out the offending substances even when the environment is “highly contaminated” by cigarette smoke. What you’re seeing is very early, and there’s no definite timetable for a finished product. Nevertheless, it suggests that you’ll eventually have one less hassle to deal with when rushing to board a flight.

Google steps in to cover Verizons butt with $150 credit on Chromebook Pixel Debacle

Verizon seems to be making the headlines in a negative light quite a bit more often than I am sure they would like. There was a recent public banter between Verizon and Netflix over bandwidth that cause quite the stir. It even pulled out the good old cease and desist letter from the Verizon legal […]

What’s on tap for Google at I/O 2014

Design, Develop, Disrupt: that’s the theme for Google I/O 2014. And while that slogan isn’t particularly revealing, we’ve compiled a handy guide of what to expect from this year’s conference .

Android Wear could make or break the smartwatch

Google knows that the smartwatch industry is disjointed, and it’s doing something about it. Read on as James Trew investigates the Android Wear platform and its potential to restructure the world of wearables.

Misfit’s fitness tracker is now available as a Pebble app

Remember the Misfit Shine? Well, this curious little fitness tracker is being reimagined as an app on the Pebble smartwatch — no Shine required. Said app is available in the Pebble appstore today, so download away.

Students aim to send a time capsule to Mars by 2017

Most people will bury a time capsule, but a group of brilliant young minds will surely find something more exciting to do with it — like sending it off to Mars. That’s exactly what a team of students from MIT, Duke University, Stanford University and the University of Connecticut plan to do. They’re encoding a digital time capsule with audio clips, videos, photos and messages to send to the red planet on a Cubesat-based spacecraft. But, that’s just a small part of what they’re trying to accomplish (even if the project’s called Time Capsule to Mars): they’re also using the opportunity to try out a number of new technologies for space travel. After all, in the words of mission director Emily Briere, the project aims “to remind people we go to space to push forward humanity.”

Obviously, the first thing they’ll be able to test is the vehicle itself and its MIT-developed propulsion engines — flying a spacecraft made out of three 26 1/2-pound Cubesat satellites is their biggest challenge, after all. If and when the vehicle lands on Mars, then the group can start testing a deep space internet system and quartz storage technology, which has the potential to store terabytes of data for millions of years. Also, they plan to perform experiments for a field of study that deals with ensuring astronauts’ good health during lengthy flights for future deep space exploration.

Since this is such a huge project (it’ll cost roughly $25 million to pull off), the students are working with a number of organizations, including NASA, and advisers like Buzz Aldrin. They’re in charge of developing every aspect, though, from spacecraft design and controls to flight communications. If everything goes as planned, the Time Capsule to Mars spacecraft will blast off in 2017 carrying messages from humanity.

iWork for iCloud now picks up exactly where you left off

iWork

Web-based apps are supposed to let you easily hop between devices without missing a beat, but that hasn’t been the case with iWork for iCloud — you’ve had to open files, tweak settings and otherwise break your flow. The experience should be much smoother after today, though. Apple has updated the online versions of Keynote, Numbers and Pages so that they remember both the last document you were looking at and your settings, such as the last page you were on and the zoom level. You won’t have to spend a few minutes getting everything just so simply because you’ve moved to your laptop, in other words. Although it’s a seemingly small change, it could matter a lot if you’d rather get things done instead of getting fussy.

What’s on your HDTV this week: World Cup, ‘Big Brother’ and ‘The Leftovers’

This week the World Cup moves on from Group play to the Round of 16, and the USMNT can book a trip there with a win or draw against Germany on Thursday (or a loss, if other things happen — futbol is complicated). In other sportsball news, the NBA Draft is on Thursday night, and with a list full of highly touted prospects plus intriguing free agents like Lebron and Carmelo, it could get very interesting. We’re also getting a taste of the rest of summer programming from various networks, but the option we’re most excitedly waiting for is HBO’s The Leftovers. Also, you may be wondering why we mentioned Big Brother so prominently this week. That’s because only now, despite its long run and the wide adoption of HDTV over the last decade, is the voyeuristic reality TV series going to be produced and broadcast in high definition. Check after the break for a list of what’s new this week plus a few trailers, and drop a note in the comments if you see any highlights we’ve missed.

Sit back and watch hacks around the world in real time

Norse's live internet hacking map

Want to feel anxious about your internet connection? The security firm Norse is more than happy to oblige. It’s running a live hacking map that shows the attacks against a worldwide honeypot (that is, purposefully vulnerable) network as they happen. While this isn’t representative of the full internet, it does act like a microcosm to some degree — the bulk of attacks originate from China or the US, while Americans almost always serve as the punching bag. You’ll even see large-scale (and surprisingly pretty-looking) assaults if you tune in at the right time. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’re going to double-check on our firewalls… this map isn’t exactly reassuring.
