Inside AA HQ
Across media, December is the time of silly year-end lists and recaps. In the tech blogosphere, December is when we wrap up and look back at the best devices that launched over the past twelve months. We wanted to do something a little different this year, and that’s how we came up with the idea of Best of Android.
Best of Android is where we put the best devices available right now through a series of in-depth comparisons. For this inaugural edition, we picked the Xperia Z5 Premium, Nexus 6P, Moto X Force, LG V10, Galaxy Note 5 and BlackBerry Priv. Through the week, we brought you in-depth looks at which phone is the best in terms of display, audio, performance, battery, and camera. Later today, we will have a close look at the UX, and tomorrow we will wrap the series and announce the overall winner.
We hope that Best of Android 2015 will become a recurring series on Android Authority, even if it was not perfect. The first edition has been a real learning experience, and we already know how to make the 2016 installment better. Feel free to tell us what you think!

This Xiaomi Mi 5 render shows the handset with a real home button
The opportunity came and went for Xiaomi to announce the Mi 5 at its November 24 event, but the company did use that date to launch the Mi Pad 2 and Redmi Note 3. Among the ‘special’ features being rumored for the handset is a technology not unlike Apple’s 3D Touch. The technology, known elsewhere as Force Touch, utilizes a pressure-sensitive display for extended long-presses. But, today, what’s below the display is what’s being talked about around the world.

A leaked render of the device obtained by GizmoChina shows that Xiaomi could be implementing a physical home button just below the display of the Mi 5. Most, if not all, Xiaomi handsets have capacitive buttons for Back, Home, and Recents; however, that is not the case here. The likely explanation for this is that Xiaomi is using a fingerprint scanner that is located on the front of the Mi 5 rather than the back.
Specifications for the handset allegedly include a 5.2-inch Quad HD (2560×1440) display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, and 21MP / 8MP cameras. The Mi 5 should ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow; however, Xiaomi is undoubtedly going to put its MIUI 7 overlay on Google’s software.
It is believed that the Mi 5 will be debuting on January 21 with availability starting the next month.

Marshmallow update “coming soon” to Xiaomi Mi 4 and Mi Note

Xiaomi’s MIUI operation manager took to Weibo to announce the company’s plans for the Marshmallow update.
For now, Xiaomi only confirmed that its two current flagships, the Mi 4 and the Mi Note, will be upgraded to Marshmallow, sometime “soon.” Xiaomi will initially release the update in a beta program, with a wider release to follow. The update could be launched as soon as next week.
According to the Weibo post, Xiaomi will keep the current MIUI version number (MIUI 7), suggesting that the user-facing changes coming with Marshmallow will be limited. MIUI 7 was launched in August 2015 and is based on Android 5.1.
Somehow ironically, a Windows 10 build for the Xiaomi Mi 4 was released earlier this week. It looks like Microsoft was able to bring the most recent Windows version to Xiaomi’s flagship faster than Google’s Android.

No info yet on the other devices in Xiaomi’s range, including the just announced Xiaomi Redmi Note 3.
As for the much anticipated Xiaomi Mi 5, the top-of-the-range device is currently expected to launch in January, with a release from February 2015. Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun promises the device will be totally worth the wait.
Xiaomi takes third place in wearables market, Android Wear absent from top 5

Last year, Xiaomi rocketed into the big leagues in the smartphone industry and has quickly managed to replicate this success in the wearables market, noting an 815 percent increase in shipments over the past twelve months, according to IDC research.
Xiaomi entered the market with its inexpensive Mi Band fitness tracker and has just followed up with its Mi Band 1S and new Pulse model, which includes heart rate monitoring capabilities. Despite selling more than 97 percent of its wearables in China, the company has leapt into third position in the world rankings for quarterly wearable shipments. China has emerged as one of the fastest growing wearables markets.
Despite Xiaomi’s huge growth, FitBit remains the most popular wearable brand with a 22 percent market share and 4.7 million units shipped in the last quarter. The company has seen its shipment volume double since the same period twelve months ago, but the company’s market share has fallen from 32.8 percent last year as new players have entered the arena.

Apple has also seen its Watch shoot the manufacturer into second place in the wearable market. A position that the company has held since the second quarter. Garmin has also seen strong growth of 72 percent over the year, and the overall size of the wearables market has gone from 7.1 million to 21 million shipments between Q3 2014 and Q3 2015, almost tripling the market’s size in the space of a year.
There isn’t a single Android Wear manufacturer in the top five, however a number of new releases didn’t arrived in time to make an impact on the Q3 figures. Furthermore, the Android Wear ecosystem is very diverse and we don’t have a combined percentage or breakdown of Android Wear devices that make up the large “others” section. Samsung, which is focusing on its Tizen OS for wearables, just missed out on the number five spot to BBK subsidiary XTC by 100,000 units. However, holiday demand for its Gear S2 watch could see the company regain its number 5 spot.

It seems that fitness trackers are still the most popular wearable type this year, although both segments are seeing growth. Given that the average smart watch costs just over $400 and the typical fitness band costs just $94, low prices seem to be a decisive factor for the majority of consumers.
Xiaomi prepares to push out Marshmallow OTA for the Mi 4 and Mi Note
The operations manager at Xiaomi has revealed that the company is now preparing to roll out the long-awaited Marshmallow update for both the Mi 4 and Mi Note. This revelation along with the disclosure that a limited nationwide beta will launch initially, followed closely by a worldwide rollout was posted on Weibo earlier today.
Unfortunately, a specific timeframe for the upgrade wasn’t provided, but we suspect that the first closed beta phase will take place early next week, with the full distribution commencing before the end of December.

Latest IDC wearable numbers show Xiaomi’s continued surge
While there was no change in the top two spots for the Q3 2015 IDC wearable numbers, Xiaomi made a staggering jump. In terms of market share, Fitbit is still in the top spot with a 22 percent market share and 4.7 million units shipped in the quarter. The company’s numbers were padded by the fact that a number employers are giving their workers Fitbit devices, including Target’s order of 335,000. Apple remains at number two, where it debuted in Q2. Cupertino shipped 3.9 million units, aided by both the release of WatchOS 2 and its gadgets going on sale in more locales.

Xiaomi agrees to patent licence agreement from Qualcomm
Qualcomm and Xiaomi have officially made an agreement. A new patent licence agreement in China allows Xiaomi to create devices that support Qualcomm’s 3G and/or 4G signals.
With the agreement, Xiaomi has agreed to pay Qualcomm to use some of their patents. With this deal made, Xiaomi’s goal is to further advance its mobile department. Qualcomm wants to see Xiaomi do well and is glad that this prevented the company from developing its own chipsets. With Samsung using its very own Exynos processors and Huawei deep within research of making their own processors, every one of Qualcomm’s partners is valuable.Moving forward, Xiaomi’s devices will be able to connect to Qualcomm’s 3G and 4G LTE cell signals. So it’s a win win situation for both manufacturers.
