NVIDIA reportedly readying Tegra K1-powered Shield tablet

nvidia_green_4-wallpaper-1920x1080

In addition to releasing a new version of the Shield gaming console, NVIDIA may also soon offer up a tablet counterpart, too. Details making the rounds indicate said tablet could be powered by a Tegra K1 processor and feature a 7.9-inch 2048 x 1536 resolution display. Other specs figure to include Android 4.4 KitKat and 2GB RAM; we would expect nothing but high-end stuff for NVIDIA’s first crack at a homegrown tablet.

If NVIDIA does keep the Shield branding with the tablet then we might look for them to position it around gaming and entertainment. Specifically, it could be sold as a flat panel gaming console that limelights as a tablet. According to details obtained by the Global Certification Forum (GCF) website, it’s also possible the device is a hybrid tablet/notebook or convertible product.

LG and Google partnering up in order to bring us Project Tango

project-tango-tablet

Google’s Project Tango is certainly an impressive concept, and that is set to be made a reality with LG announcing a partnership with Google to bring Project Tango hardware to life.

Project Tango is unique because the idea allows 3D mapping of your environment through a variety of sensors and cameras. Now imagine this on a tablet, and better yet seeing it on shelves as soon as next year.

Google and LG have worked on hardware in the past, and the partnership definitely yields some impressive results at low costs. A Project Tango tablet and an affordable price would definitely be revolutionary, especially when you can 3D scan yourself and see you running around in a FPS on a tablet.

The dream is almost a reality.

Google released a promo video showing off Android “L” on various devices and situation as a part of Google I/O

android l promo____

Google really had lots to say at this year’s Google I/O. We definitely expected a promo video for it and Google delivered.

Video runtime is around 2 minutes and it shows most of what Google has been talking about, or better, presenting at Google I/O this year. This promo video is tracking a guy and his dog in different situations, from waking up and running to a dog show and chillin’ in the living room. Throughout the video you can see Google’s new Android Wear in action on a LG G Watch and Android “L” on a Nexus 5 and Nexus 7, they even included Android TV and Android Auto in the story. Oh well, see it for yourself:

Costco is now selling iPads and iPhones, with a patchy selection

iPhone 5s and a teacup for good measure

Costco has a rough history with Apple products; the big-box chain sold Apple goods for a while, but pulled them in a huff after it was denied a chance to sell the original iPad. Time must have healed those wounds, then, since the retailer is now selling iPads and iPhones. There are some solid bargains, depending on what you’re looking for. The iPhone 5s for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon is selling for $78 on contract, a full $120 lower than the regular sticker; you can also lop $100 off the price of Verizon-ready editions of the iPad Air (now $520) and iPad mini with Retina display ($420).

Good luck tracking down exactly what you want, however. T-Mobile gear is only available through some Costco kiosks, and the only iPhone 5c on tap is a 16GB blue model for AT&T (which, strangely, sells for more than the higher-end 5s). Likewise, you’ll have to shop elsewhere if you want a cellular-equipped iPad for AT&T or Sprint. But hey, it’s a start — and if you don’t mind getting Apple gear when updated models are likely just a few months away, you’ll save some change.

Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 will be available for $279 on contract, starting June 26

samsung galaxy tab 4 8.0____

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 is a capable “little” tablet. It got announced a few months ago and is now available at Verizon for $279.

This tablet is powered by a 1.2 quad-core processor along with 1.5GB of RAM. On the front you’ll find an 8″ 1280×800 (189ppi) capacitive touchscreen and 1.3MP front facing camera along with the usual slew of sensors and Samsung’s hardware home button. On the back you can find a 3.15MP main camera. The tablet has 16GB internal storage which you can expand via microSD card (up to 64GB)

If you decide to purchase this device you’ll have access to Verizon’s XLTE network, which should offer great speeds should you be in an XLTE market. The device will be available starting June 26 for $279 on a two-year contract or $380 without one.

Xplore’s latest Windows tablet promises rugged design without the bulk

Xplore Technologies makes tablets that are so rugged, just picking one up will cause your palms to go all hairy. Up until now, it’s made chunky Windows tablets like the XC6, and slender, less powerful slates that are capable of running Android. The Xplore Bobcat wants to sit between the two ranges, offering the brawn of Windows 8 with the svelte looks of the company’s RangerX tablets. Of course, this isn’t just about shedding weight and size, since the Bobcat will still work in freezing conditions, withstand drops of nearly two meters onto concrete and all of the other tortures most gadget geeks could conceive.

The Bobcat’s biggest selling point is that it’s got a surprising number of inputs for something that appears to be far less capable than its elder sibling. For instance, there’s an Ethernet jack in there, as well as micro-HDMI-out, two USB 3.0 ports, a microSD reader and a micro-SIM card slot, the latter taking advantage of the optional Sierra Wireless 4G modem. If you’re rocking industrial hardware that still uses a serial port, you’ll find one of those lurking beneath a rubberized port that’s screwed down for normal operation. Oh, and there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack in there, obviously. Imaging-wise, there’s the same pairing of a 5-megapixel primary camera and 720p webcam we found on the XC6, neither of which you’d like to use unless you really had to.

Given the greatly reduced hardware, you may expect that performance would take a hit, but we couldn’t see any noticeable stress. Thanks to the quad-core 1.9GHz Bay Trail (E2845) chip and 4GB of RAM, switching between several open apps is smooth, and we certainly found it comfortable enough to hammer out (parts) of this article, so long as we connected a USB keyboard. Display-wise, the slate has a 10.1-inch, 1,366 x 768 IPS display, but there’s no pen-style digitizer like the higher-priced models, so the two attached styli have soft rubber tips and no hover mode. The display only has a 500-nit backlight, so while it’s brighter than some laptops, it struggled a little more in bright, direct sunlight. We also played some audio on the hardware, and found that the single rear-facing speaker can be muffled easily, but provides a decent volume, although it’s too hollow-sounding for any impromptu dance parties.

Naturally, it’s not going to be the go-to tablet for 90 percent of our readership, unless we all decide to become the most extreme of extreme sports fans. But if you’re interested in grabbing one of these, then the Xplore Bobcat goes on sale from today. Price-wise, bereft of build-to-order options like a 256GB SSD and the aforementioned 4G modem, it’ll set you back $2,200. But then, if you’re the sort of rich daredevil who keeps dropping their Galaxy Tabs off cliff edges, then that might be worth a slice of your cash.

The Surface Pro 3 is nigh-on impossible to repair, just like its ancestors

iFixit's Surface Pro 3 teardown

If you had dreams of upgrading your shiny new Surface Pro 3, you’d better shelve them. The crew at iFixit has torn down Microsoft’s latest slate, and it proves just as daunting to repair as both of its predecessors. About the only replaceable part is the solid-state drive, and there’s a good chance that you’ll destroy your tablet trying to reach that component — even iFixit cracked the glass while removing the display. Just about everything (including the screen) is held in place with adhesives, and unconventional connectors only add to the challenge. You may not mind the unrepairable design given that the Pro 3 is much thinner and lighter than earlier Surfaces, but this definitely isn’t the tablet for tinkerers.

HTC Volantis tablet details leaked

htc volantis

We’ve seen lots of Nexus rumors in the last few months, both smartphone and tablet line. On one hand reports have been saying that the Nexus line is coming to an end in favor of Android Silver, on the other hands however we’ve seen leaks of Nexus 6 and Nexus 8. Nexus line may or may not be coming to an end, but even if that happens it doesn’t mean it will happen this year.

Be that as it may, newest report shows us a render of Nexus 8 tablet made by HTC and its specs, although they refer to it as Nexus 9. The device’s name is HTC Volantis (earlier mentioned as “Flounder”). This report is coming from Android Police and they seem rather certain that the device is coming.

Talking about specs, according to the report the device will feature an 8.9″ display 2048×1440 in resolution (281ppi). It will be powered by Tegra K1 64-bit processor (Nvidia Logan) along with 2GB of RAM. The device will sport an 8MP OIS rear shooter while the one on the front will be 3MP. The device will come with either 16 or 32GB of internal storage and will have stereo front-facing speakers as well as an Aluminum zero-gap construction and should weight 418 grams. There will also be a LTE version of the device and its measurements will be 22.63×15.19×0.79cm or in inches 8.91×5.98×0.31.

htc volantis_1

Note that the renders doesn’t seem to be final, although the device looks rather Nexusy as it is. 16GB version of the device should cost 399$ while the 32-gig model will be a 100$ more expensive, which brings it to $499. LTE version will raise the price for an additional $100+. The report also says we won’t see this device at Google I/O, it should be release in Q4.

These are some detailed information and they seem quite legit. What do you think of all this?
