Nexus 8 (Nexus 9/Flounder/Volantis) gets leaked on a shipping manifest

htc volantis

Last time we spotted a leak of a new Nexus tablet we were quite shocked, considering it said that the tablet will sport 5GB of RAM along with some other pretty nice specs. Even the source of that leak is usually spot on. This device keeps on leaking.

This time it leaked on a shipping database in India (image down below). It showed a listing for two “NEXUS8 PROTOTYPE TABLET SIMILAR TO NEXUS(7)” which landed in India about a week ago via Bangalore Air Cargo. The value listed for each of those was INR$16,484, which is approximately $275. This is probably not the retail price though, but we’re not sure. This might be the best evidence this thing exists thus far.

This time around we don’t get any specifications or anything of the sort. As far as we know @evleaks’ information might be spot on.

Chromecast update lets you mirror your Android screen on a TV

Android screen mirroring with Chromecast

Google vowed that Android users would finally get official screen mirroring on Chromecast through an update, and it’s making good on that promise by rolling out the Chromecast 1.7 app today. Grab the new release and supporting devices (primarily from HTC, LG and Samsung) can send just about anything to a TV just by hitting a “cast screen” button. If you’re using a Nexus device, you don’t even have to launch any software — the feature will pop up in Android’s quick settings. You’re high and dry if your devices aren’t on Google’s compatibility list, but don’t worry too much. We hear there are third-party mirroring apps that can pick up the slack.

Pre-orders for the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet with Verizon starts Tomorrow

We have heard rumors that the Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet would be making its way to Verizon. All rumors and leaks can now be tossed aside as Verizon has announced that they will offer up pre-orders for the new water-resistant behemoth starting tomorrow, July 10th.

Verizon Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet

There is a lot to love about this monster. The 1920 x 1200 resolution display with Sony’s TRILUMINOS and X-Reality engine is a pretty great place to start. Toss in a quad-core 2.3 GHZ Qualcomm processor, 3GB of RAM, 32 GB internal storage, micro SD card support and a 6000 mAh battery just to name a few. We can’t forget to mention that it is also IP55 and IP58 rated. Which means it is water-resistant and dust-proof. Yes, that means you can safely watch movies in the tub, pool side or even in the shower if you do so desire. The Xperia Z2 Tablet also has a 8.1MP rear camera and a 2.23MP front shooter.

As a bonus, if you order one you also get 90 days of free streaming music though Sony’s Music Unlimited service, 6 pre-selected movie download through Sony’s Video Unlimited and an exclusive early access pass to  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 when it becomes available for digital download.

Hold on to your britches though, all of this will cost you a pretty penny, as one would expect. Verizon will be officially selling the tablet for $599.99. Ouch. However, for a limited time you can get it for $499.99 with a new two-year contract. If you pre-order it then Verizon will also through in a Digital Noise Cancelling Headset, the MDRNC31EM, for free. (while supplies last). If you want to hold off until it is in stores, then you will have to wait until July 17th.

Anyone considering this bad boy?

Thieves nab 40,000 Samsung devices through a daring Brazilian heist

Samsung's factory in Campinas, Brazil circa 2011

When you think of gadget thefts, odds are that you picture muggings or smash-and-grabs at stores. Apparently, one group of thieves in Brazil had far more ambitious plans — it raided Samsung’s factory in Campinas (shown here) and stole more than 40,000 laptops, phones and tablets that police estimate are worth $36 million. Reportedly, the heist played out much like a movie. The bandits both hijacked a company shuttle to get inside and took some of the workers hostage, going so far as to confiscate phone batteries so that no one could alert the police.

None of the culprits have been identified, and Samsung contends that the actual value of the stolen goods is lower. However, authorities suspect that the crooks had inside help; they knew not just how to get in, but also where they would find certain valuables. Samsung will try to prevent a “repeat incident,” but a lot of damage has already been done. Those devices likely aren’t coming back, and future production runs might not be safe if the robbers really did get assistance from corrupt workers.

Facebook Messenger gets a native iPad version

Facebook Messenger for iPad

Facebook Messenger makes the most sense on a phone, but plenty of people still want to chat on their tablets — and apparently, Facebook knows it. The social network has just updated Messenger for iOS to support the iPad, letting you carry on a conversation without having to either dig through chats in the main Facebook app or rely on third-party titles. The iPad interface mostly behaves like a super-sized version of what you see on an iPhone, although you miss out on a handful of recent feature additions, like tap-and-hold video capture and the split-screen selfie mode. There’s no corresponding native interface for Android tablets just yet, although the iPad refresh suggests that one might be on the horizon.

Chinese companies on the rise, Xiaomi MiPad sells out in minutes

mipad

Most of your favorite devices from companies like LG, Samsung and HTC may be manufactured in China, but these companies are all headquartered elsewhere. Today companies like Oppo, Meizu, Xiaomi and the new kid on the block, OnePlus, are starting to become household names because they sell innovative products with top specs that are usually hundreds of dollars less for an unlocked device.

Nearly all of the Android devices coming out of these companies were smartphones until recently when Xiaomi launched its first tablet, the MiPad, on July 1 in China. Now you may have heard of Xiaomi, the maker of the popular MIUI ROM and launcher, usually described as a mashup of the best of iOS and Android styling, especially since in the past year the former Google VP Hugo Barra became the VP for Xiaomi Global.

The device, which steals some of its looks from the Apple iPhone 5c and iPad mini, comes in five colors and two different storage sizes. For 1,499 yuan (about $240) or 1,699 yuan (about $270) depending on built-in storage, you can get a device with the following specs:

  • 7.9-inch IPS display
  • 2048 x 1536 326 ppi
  • NVIDIA Tegra K1 procesor
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 16 or 64 GB Flash, expandable to 128GB via microSD card
  • 8MP rear-facing camera
  • 5MP front-facing camera
  • 802.11ac 2×2 Wi-Fi
  • 6700 mAh battery

With such impressive specs (it’s the first device with a K1 processor) and a great price, Xiaomi definitely has a winner in its hands as during the launch the tablet sold out in only 3 minutes and 59 seconds. That’s 50,000 units in under 4 minutes.

Xiaomi recently moved into Singapore, will be launching in India soon and eventually Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. It will probably be a while before it launches devices in the U.S. and Europe. Although that’s the case, you still import from places like XiaomiShop, AliExpress and various other online retailers, where the new MiPad is selling for about $335 and $365 respectively. Import prices may be slightly higher, but the 64 GB model is still cheaper than the 16 GB iPad mini with Retina Display at $399.

Xiaomi just announced its first half-year results for 2014 and said it shipped about 26 Million phones globally, an increase of 271 percent from H1 2013, with revenues of about $5.3 billion, an increase of about 149 percent from H1 2013. As it moves into more and more countries and releases more killer devices like the MiPad, it’s results will likely only continue to increase.

As more Americans begin to ditch their contracts or look to get away from subsidized devices, we may see even more devices from Chinese companies in the coming months and years. OnePlus is one of the first to offer an LTE device on the cheap, but competition is always welcomed.

Are you considering or interested in a device from a Chinese company/startup? Let us know in the comment section below.

OnePlus tablet, recent HTC Volantis specs turn out to be hoax

jealous_angry

You know that old saying of, “If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is”? Looks like that applies to not one, but two articles we covered yesterday. As it turns out, both the OnePlus tablet and new HTC Volantis specifications were the result of a hoax. According to @evleaks, the tips came from a 14-year-old posing as a Google engineer.

Let’s hope these were blips on a radar and that Evan Blass (evleaks) doesn’t fall victim to such chicanery again. On one hand we see him taking a stronger stance in vetting his sources and leaks; one the other hand we see more people taking a crack at his defense system.

OnePlus tablet hits rumor mill, probably won’t be available anytime soon

Oneplustab

You may still be trying to get your hands on a OnePlus One, but that doesn’t mean the startup isn’t starting to think ahead to its next product. A recent leak from @evleaks suggests that OnePlus is working on a device called the OnePlus Tab.

The leak comes in the form of a screenshot dated June 29 of an alpha version of the site with a link or placeholder that reads “ONEPLUS TAB.” Besides this information, we know nothing else about the supposed device. Who knows it’s real or not, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the company was working on a tablet as well and if this was the first tablet to run CyanogenMod.

Would you be interested in a OnePlus tablet or are have you had enough with the company and its invite system?

NVIDIA’s Shield successor is a tablet

The next version of NVIDIA’s funky handheld Shield console will actually be called the Shield Tablet, according to a listing from a testing body called the Global Certification Forum (GCF). There’s been much speculation about the device, especially after a diagram of what looks like the controller showed up at the FCC. That’s usually a sign that a product is imminent, and we were told last year that a new model could come sooner than expected by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang himself (see the video below). As a reminder, the original Shield is a portable, Tegra-powered console, with a built in controller and 5-inch screen that can run Android games and apps. But it’s main raison d’etre is to wirelessly stream games from your NVIDIA-equipped PC, making it a rather nichey device. The GCF page confirms the “Shield Tablet” name that NVIDIA posted by mistake on its own site, and adds the fact that it’ll have 4G capability.

So why a tablet? The original Shield is just a tablet with a controller (permanently) attached, so separating them makes sense. That way, NVIDIA could market it as a high-end tablet, a handheld gaming device and possibly a home console that’d plug into your TV. It’s also feasible that more than one Shield device is coming, though that seems less likely. Either way, a mysterious benchmark for an NVIDIA Mocha tablet gives us a clue about the specs, which are identical to the new Xiaomi Mii pad. That device has a 7.9-inch, 2,048 x 1,536 screen, with 2GB of RAM and NVIDIA’s new Tegra K1 quad-core CPU. If the Shield Tablet is similarly equipped, it’d be much more capable of running serious games than the original, as shown in the video below (which features NVIDIA’s reference Tegra K1 tablet, by the way). 4G connectivity would also make it much more usable on the road. If all this pans out, it’d make sense — allowing the Shield to be a standalone tablet might be the final carrot to entice gamers into throwing their cash at it.
