T-Mobile continues the Uncarrier push with new 10 line Family Plan ews

Yesterday T-Mobile announced that they were offering 2GB of 4G LTE data for the Simple Starter customers for just $5 more a month starting September 3rd. Today T-mobile has made another announcement, this time centered around their Family Plan offerings.

T-Mobile UNcarrier Phase 2

Starting tomorrow, August 27th, adding a line to your Simple Choice plans gets even better. At least for those larger and extended families out there. As of tomorrow T-mobile is expanding its line limit from the current 5 to 10 per account. I remember when I worked at T-Mobile many years ago I used to get plenty of calls where a family had to have two accounts to accommodate the number of devices in the home. This move is certain to please those people out of convenience, management of the accounts and of course the price. Price being the most important really. Each line after the first 2 still remains at just $10 per line all the way up to 10 lines. That doesn’t mean 12 lines, it’s the first 2 and then 8 additional. There is more though.

“I’ve always maintained that shared data plans are a source of customer pain.  And, it’s becoming clear now that they are,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “The old carriers’ shared data plans are just another ploy to push customers over their data limits and suck money out of their pockets with overage charges they can’t see coming.”

Every line will have its own dedicated 4G LTE high-speed data allotment. By default every line gets 1GB out the gate no matter what. Any of the lines can add unlimited data for $30 a month. The press release doesn’t mention any other options that they offer now, like 3GB for $10 more ect.

There is a promotion running right now that takes that 1GB to 2.5GBs per line for no additional charge through 2015 if you buy 4 or more lines. I certainly hope that promotion keeps running after tomorrow.

T-Mobile will ‘Double your data’ when you add a tablet starting September 3rd

Oh look, more outstanding news from T-Mobile. Just a bit ago we told you about the new Family Plan offerings that let you put up to 10 lines on one account for just $10 per line. They also made sure to point out that they are keeping the data as a per-line basis rather than silly share buckets. Another announcement was pushed out today that expands on that news slightly.

Starting September 3rd if you add a tablet to any Simple Choice plan for just $10 a month. Currently if you add a tablet you get 200MBs of free data for the life of your tablet. That alone is a pretty sweet deal, but we are data hungry monsters who need MOAR! So T-Mobile is delivering it. When you add a tablet to your plan they will match your phones data plan up to 5GBs just for your tablet. Yes, that is also on top of the free 200MBs, although the 200MBs is really kind of mute at that point.

“The old school carriers make you pay for the privilege of connecting your tablet to their network−just to tap into the same limited pool of data you already bought for your smartphone,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile.  “With the Un-carrier, you can now get double the data on a network designed for data for one simple price.  It couldn’t be simpler or more straightforward.”

T-Mobile Simple Choice

The comparison chart makes short work of the competition in terms of data access. I’m all for paying less for more, but I am also all for paying the same for more. The press release doesn’t mention anything about the unlimited package though, I imagine that you can only max your tablet at 5GBs, but I could be wrong. Looks like I just might have to head to T-Mobile on the 3rd and do a little plan revamping. Maybe even pick up a new 4G LTE tablet while I am at it.

T-Mobile offers more data to tablet users and the budget crowd

T-Mobile CEO John Legere

T-Mobile isn’t about to stop tweaking its phone plans any time soon; in fact, it just overhauled three of them with data in mind. To start, you’ll get twice as much full-speed data on your phone plan if you add a tablet to the mix from September 3rd onward; if you currently get 3GB, for example, adding the $10 monthly tablet access fee will give you 6.2GB (including the 200MB of free tablet data) to play with. It’s potentially a much better deal than what rivals offer if you intend to use your tablet a lot while on the road. On Sprint, you’d be paying $75 per month for both phone service and 4GB of shared data.

The other plan changes don’t necessarily give you as much data, but they may be a better value if you’re cost-conscious. If you’re on a $40 Simple Starter plan, an option arriving on September 3rd will let you pay $5 more per month to quadruple your max-speed data from 500MB to a much healthier 2GB — not quite as good as Cricket (which delivers 2.5GB for $45), but close. Whole households, meanwhile, can put as many as 10 lines on a family plan as of August 27th. It still costs $10 per person like the previous five-line option, and everyone gets their own data. Sprint currently has the advantage in family plans if you’re only looking to get as much data as possible for the money, but T-Mobile’s expansion may be handy for returning students and anyone else who’d rather not shoulder the full cost of phone service.

T-Mobile Simple Starter plans to get 4X the data for just $5 a month

Watching the cellular industry duke it out for phones, data plans and general plans is sort of fun. The changes that one company makes often trickles over to another in some fashion that generally is better for the consumer. Sometimes it is all in the wording and the marketing of a new feature of plan, but sometimes these guys do make a change that is pretty beneficial. T-Mobile has announced a new add-on feature today that should sit nicely with Simple Start plan users.

T-Mobile Simple Starter

Starting September 3rd Simple Starter plan subscribers will be able to up their 4G LTE plan from 500MBs to 2GBs for just $5 more a month. That puts the monthly total, prior to taxes and all that jazz, at just $45 a month.

“People who use loads of data use T-Mobile,” said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile. “And it’s no wonder. The old guard telecoms punish people for using more data on their networks with crazy overage charges and fees. Get Verizon’s $50 plan and use just one gig more data, and the price jumps to $65. It’s crazy. At T-Mobile, we designed our network data-strong so our customers could use the hell out of it.  And that’s just what they’re doing.”

That is still $5 less a month than the standard Simple Choice plan that offers the same unlimited talk and text with only 1GB of LTE data. The key difference is that on the Simple Starter your data is suspended after you reach the cap where as the Simple Choice just slows you down.

Bring a friend to T-Mobile and you’ll both get unlimited data for a year

HBO Documentary Screening Of

T-Mobile’s approach when it comes to luring new customers continues to nab loads of users. This time around, the so-called UnCarrier is offering a year of unlimited data on its LTE network for customers that convince friends to make the switch from Sprint, AT&T or Verizon. And yes, the acquaintance that actually has to sign the papers gets the same 12-month deal. The limited-time offer takes aim at Sprint’s recent efforts to lure customers from rival carriers with increased data allotments for families, and follows the yellow-hued network ending its quest to purchase T-Mobile earlier this month.

T-Mobile won’t throttle P2P users but will try to change their behaviors

unlimited-cheer_tmobile-720

You know the report that said T-Mobile would be throttling those who abuse their 4G LTE network for peer-to-peer file sharing and wrongful tethering? It appears that this is not exactly the case and that T-Mobile wants to, instead, reach out to help these people change. And, as far as there only being a select few… Read more »

T-Mobile cracks down on customers who abuse their unlimited data

If you’re using T-Mobile’s network to torrent all seven seasons of The West Wing (remember kids, piracy is for jerks) or tethering like an absolute madman, don’t be surprised if your data speeds start dipping dramatically over the next few weeks. According to a leaked internal memo (which T-Mobile has substantiated) data draining customers with one of the carrier’s Unlimited 4G LTE plans — like the $80 Simple Choice option — will see their speeds throttled starting on August 17 if they don’t change their network hammering ways. The only real consolation here is that T-Mobile won’t spring this on you out of the blue. Before you start getting throttled, the carrier will contact you to give you a warning — if you don’t shape up, your LTE speeds will be cut down until your next billing cycle rolls around.

T-Mobile confirmed to us in an email that it indeed plans to start throttling certain unruly customers if need be, and they’ve already found a few poor souls to make its corporate displeasure known to. Take a gander at the carrier’s official statement below:

As America’s Un-carrier, we have broken the wireless industry rules to abolish numerous customer pain points and provide our customers with the fastest nationwide 4G LTE network. A very small number of our customers are misusing their Simple Choice Unlimited data service in violation of their rate plan and terms and conditions by bypassing the default tethering feature or engaging in peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing.

This type of usage can negatively impact our ability to offer affordable unlimited data. In order to protect all T-Mobile customers, we will be reaching out to these people to educate them on our terms and conditions of service, but if the misuse continues, they could have their data speeds reduced for the remainder of their billing cycle.

T-Mobile to throttle P2P network abusers

tmobile_country

T-Mobile, for all of its Un-carrier ways, still has to act like a traditional carrier every once in a while. Such is the case where, next week, they will begin throttling users who engage in peer-to-peer file sharing and tethering outside of normal terms and conditions. Expected to stat August 17, this should only impact… Read more »

T-Mobile LTE throttling to commence due to P2P file sharing and tethering abuse, unlimited plans Only

T-mobile has certainly proved themselves a worthy adversary in the carrier business over the last couple of years. Plenty of changes have brought customers to magenta in droves. Just because T-Mobile is bending, and in some cases, breaking the wireless industry rules, doesn’t mean that there are some things they have to tighten up on slightly. Seems an internal memo has made its way online that depicts that T-Mobile is finally being forced to get a little heavy-handed, at least in one area of its service.

“T-mobile has identified customers who are heavy data users and are engaged in peer-to-peer file sharing, and tethering outside of T-Mobile’s Terms and Conditions (T&C). This results in a negative data network experience for T-Mobile customers. Beginning August 17, T-Mobile will begin to address customers who are conducting activities outside of T-Mobile’s T&Cs.”

OH NO!! Seriously though, this isn’t really a huge deal. If you are on any normal data plan that offers, say 2GB of data at full speed and then you are throttled anyways, there is no need to worry at all. This is targeted toward the older $70 and the newer Simple Plan $80 unlimited plans that don’t throttle your usage. It isn’t even that this is something new either, T-Mobiles Terms & Conditions have had the policy for some time and now T-Mobile will just finally be enforcing it.

Using the Service in connection with server devices or host computer applications, including continuous Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing applications that are broadcast to multiple servers or recipients, “bots” or similar routines that could disrupt net user groups or email use by others or other applications that denigrate network capacity or functionality.

It is also very important to point out that this isn’t going to happen because you watch too much Netflix or Hulu either, this is aimed specifically at P2P file sharing and tethering outside of the T&C. You won’t go from high-speed data to 2G over night. T-Mobile will contact you first and let you know that they are on to your shenanigans. If you fail to heed the warning, you get a nice little ‘Misuse Warning SOC’ added to your account. Keep pushing your boundaries and that SOC will be replaced with a “Misuse Throttle SOC’ that will slow your data down considerably. This makes it really easy for customer care and store team members to see why you might have data speed issues if you want to pretend that you have no idea what is happening.

You guys have between now and August 17th to get your affairs in order before you have to worry about the throttling. In a nutshell, keep the torrent, P2P and online broadcasting to your hardwired ISP.

Here is an image of the information that T-Mobile reps are reading up on now.
