T-Mobile officially announces the Sony Xperia Z3 with pre-orders for Oct. 15th, available Oct. 29th

Last week Sony took to the stage in New York to announce their latest flagship, the Sony Xperia Z3, was headed to Verizon Wireless as the Xperia Z3v. We had evidence from T-Mobile back in September that they would indeed be carrying the device later this fall. T-Mobile has now officially announced the Xperia Z3 pricing and launch date.

Xperia Z3 T-Mobile

The T-Mobile Xperia Z3 will be launched first as a pre-order option starting October 15th before finally becoming fully available on October 29th. Pricing details place the device at $630 with $26.25 paid per month for 24 months. If you jump on the pre-order bandwagon you should get the device prior to its official launch in stores.

“Our Data Strong™ network was built to support devices that can do it all, and the gorgeous Sony Xperia Z3 is no exception,” said Jason Young, Senior Vice President, Marketing at T-Mobile. “From the mind-boggling content experience with vivid colors and sound, to 4K video recording and more, the Xperia Z3 and T-Mobile’s nationwide 4G LTE network are a perfect pair.”

A small recap of the devices specs (from Sony) include a 5.2-inch 1920 x 1080 screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 3GB of RAM,  20.7MP camera that can record in 4K, 3100 mAh battery rated for 920 hours standby time, and is IP65 and IP68 water and dust proof rated. I can’t forget to mention PS4 Remote PLAY that lets you use your PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 controller and Xperia Z3 to play your PS4 games over WiFi. T-Mobile doesn’t offer up too many device details so I assume they will be the same as Sony lists without any alteration or modifications.  They also don’t list out color options. I am sure we will all find that out on the 15th.

Anyone been waiting to see if this was going to make it to T-Mobile? You going to be buying it?

Sony’s pint-sized yet powerful Xperia Z3 Compact reaches the US

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Sony may not have launched its small-yet-potent Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone through a US carrier, but it just delivered the next best thing. The tech firm has started selling an unlocked version of the Z3 Compact on its American online store for $530. It’s virtually identical to what Sony launched in Europe, complete with a 4.6-inch display, speedy Snapdragon 801 chip and 20.7-megapixel camera, but it packs native LTE data support for AT&T, T-Mobile and other US carriers that share their frequencies. You can even get it in bright orange or seafoam green if black or white seems too drab. You’ll still have to spring for the full-size Z3 or Z3v if you want Sony’s latest tech without paying the full cost up front, but this could easily fit the bill (and your pocket) if you have the cash to spend.

The Sony Xperia Z3 is going to be available from T-Mobile; will other U.S. carriers follow suit?

Sony Xperia Z3Just last month, Sony announced it would scaling back its low and mid range smartphones in favour of its premium devices. This was in no small part due to its financial issues, and a large part of these issues, in Sony’s own words, was a failure to gain a foothold in the U.S. market. Considering that T-Mobile has been the sole carrier to carry Sony devices, this isn’t particularly surprising – that isn’t a dig at T-Mobile, but more a comment on the lack of device availability. That might be about to change as Sony has scheduled an event in New York on October 9th, presumably to formally release the Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact in the U.S., and The Verge is suggesting we could see Sony announcing partnerships with other U.S. carriers as well.

T-Mobile has of course recently confirmed it will be carrying the Xperia Z3, but the fact that Sony has already mentioned a prior weakness in its U.S. sales suggests it should branch out to other carriers too. Of course, Sony’s relationship with T-Mobile is the strongest, so don’t be surprised to see some kind of exclusive deals when the time comes – T-Mobile has tweeted that people interested in the Xperia Z3 Compact in particular should “keep an eye” on their newsroom.

Whatever the case, many people will be glad to see the Xperia Z3 and particularly the Z3 Compact in the U.S. at all, so stay tuned for updates when the event goes live.

What do you think about the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact being available on other U.S. carriers? Let us know your opinion.

The extended Nexus family: Google’s golden Android standard

Google’s Nexus line has long stood as the company’s ideal vision of its widely adopted, open-source Android operating system. The devices, be they smartphones, tablets or even one-off media streamers, are built in conjunction with select hardware partners and represent an ideal marriage of tech specs with an unadulterated version of Android. It’s Google’s way of dealing with fragmentation (read: skinned versions) in the mobile OS market it created; a reference mark for manufacturers to aspire to, so to speak.

On the tail of the original Android handset’s sixth anniversary and in the run-up to whatever new Nexuses come next, we take a look back at the hardware path that’s been Google’s gold standard for Android.

Samsung’s no-phone-necessary Gear S watch is coming to the US this fall

Samsung gave us a glimpse at its next smartwatch (there have been a few) during IFA, and tonight there’s news that, surprise, you’ll be able to buy and use the Gear S in the US this fall. This one is special because unlike most other watches, it can connect to 3G data by itself when the wearer’s phone isn’t around. There’s little in the way of details, but it’s coming on all four major carriers — AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile — and the company promises more information “soon.” You can check out our experiences at typing out emails on its two-inch AMOLED screen right here, and decide if it’s worth picking up this Tizen OS device instead of the Apple Watch (or any of the other wearables either coming soon or already here).

Verizon isn’t getting WiFi calling until next year, either

AT&T isn’t the only carrier not getting WiFi calling until 2015 — a certain red-branded network’s iPhone 6 and 6 Plus won’t, either. Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Media, Communications and Entertainment Conference, Verizon’s CFO Fran Shammo said that his company has some back-end work to finish up before the feature goes live. This is something he predicts should happen around halfway through next year. What’s more, he said that WiFi calling was never a top priority, either, as spotted by FierceWireless.

Taking a jab at the the carrier that does support the feature this year, T-Mobile, he said Verizon built its network “extensively” so that the firm doesn’t need to offer it just yet. “There was never a need for us to tell our customers, ‘Oh, our network is not good enough so you need to go default to WiFi to complete your call,’” he said. Citing similar reasons to AT&T, Shammo continued that it can’t guarantee the quality of a WiFi call, thus Verizon’s deliberate pace to adopt the tech. It’s a slight delay, but at least we’re getting the feature faster than, you know, a Big Red voice-over-LTE handset.
