T-Mobile announces “Smartphone Equality” plans

American carrier T-Mobile has just announced a new Smartphone Equality approach towards its plans and offerings which promises to not leave out those with low credit scores.

In a blog post, the CEO of T-Mobile, John Legere mentions how the industry has been cruel to people with lower credit scores. To qualify for this Smartphone Equality plan, you need to have paid your smartphone bill in time for 12 straight months, so your credit score will not come into account.

All T-Mobile wants to know is that you’re capable of paying the smartphone bill at the end of every month. The carrier says that this way, every customer will be able to enjoy all of its plans and offers on new devices.

Speaking about the new announcement, Legere said – “This new approach puts the relationships we’ve built with loyal customers above their credit scores.  It’s a simpler, saner way to evaluate credit − our history with you. And it’s more effective. Because the simple truth is that our relationship with that customer is actually a better predictor of future behavior than their credit history.”

T-Mobile will give benefits to users who pay their bills on time for 12 consecutive months


T-Mobile has just announced their next step in the Un-carrier agenda, which aims to give benefits to customers who pay their bills on time. The new initiative is called Smartphone Equality, and allows users who pay their phone bill on time for a full year to get the same perks as customers with great credit scores. Oftentimes, carriers will introduce a ton of great promotions to get customers in the door, only to decline the customers because of their bad credit score. Now, even if a customer has poor credit, if they’ve paid their phone bill on time for 12 months, T-Mobile will ignore the credit score and give the customer the perks they deserve.

John Legere, the carrier’s CEO, explains:

 It’s a simpler, saner way to evaluate credit − our history with you. And it’s more effective. Because the simple truth is that our relationship with that customer is actually a better predictor of future behavior than their credit history.

So what are some of the benefits Smartphone Equality brings to the carrier? T-Mobile states that for qualified customers, benefits include low device pricing on smartphones and tablets, as well as zero down with no interest and no credit check. The carrier explains that there are more than 100 million American adults that don’t have a smartphone, so this new initiative aims to change that.

Smartphone Equality is available for any customer on a prepaid or postpaid plan.

T-Mobile’s Smartphone Equality levels playing for field for all credit scores

T-Mobile on Thursday introduced a new program that aims to give everyone the same chance at best available device prices. You know that credit score that’s been haunting you for the last few years? T-Mobile doesn’t care about that. All they wanna know is that you’ve been good with them for the last 12 months.

Called Smartphone Equality, it’s T-Mobile’s way of recognizing that you’re a good customer. After all, you’ve paid your bill on time for the last year. Why can’t you qualify for the same prices as others? Shouldn’t you be able to get that zero down, low-monthly equipment rate, too?

Customers qualify by paying for their wireless service on-time for 12 straight months. That’s it. Every single customer with a monthly voice plan can qualify to get the Un-carrier’s best device pricing and financing − including $0 down on the hottest smartphones with no interest and no credit check.

Smartphone Equality kicks off on January 25 and becomes immediately available for existing customers. To that end, T-Mobile says there will be many subscribers who are eligible for the best pricing.

Report: Google to become MVNO on backs of Sprint and T-Mobile



Google has been working on a solution for mobile service for a while. We haven’t necessarily received any official confirmation, but it has been in reports and rumors for a while. Now, it seems we may be closer than ever to that becoming a reality.

The Information has a report that Nick Fox, a Google executive, is leading what’s called “Project Nova”, which will see Google buying wholesale access to service from T-Mobile and Sprint to provide to consumers. This would make it an MVNO.

Google is always looking for ways to push companies to think for the consumer and push to be better. Just look at Google Fiber, which has done exactly that in the cities it has been released. It will be interesting to see how Google does this as an MVNO and not an actual carrier.

I personally like the idea of Google providing wireless plans, and would be willing to try it out. Would you give it a shot?

Google will soon offer wireless service through Sprint and T-Mobile

It has often been rumored that Google will eventually get into the wireless mobile game, and it looks like that dream will come true. As part of something codenamed Nova, Google won’t be starting their own service, but will instead opt to be an MVNO for Sprint and T-Mobile.

If you’re not familiar with what an MVNO is, it’s a mobile virtual network operator, or basically a re-seller of another carrier’s service. For example, Ting is a Sprint MVNO and Straight Talk is the same for both T-Mobile and AT&T. You can now add Google to the mix.

According to The Information, Google wants to not only offer lower prices, but also improve the user experience. They are also developing mobile apps to go along with the service.

Google has not commented, but the report indicates that they have been working on this project since the fall of last year, and the service could launch sometime this year.

Does this excite you? Neither Sprint nor T-Mobile excites me since their coverages are dismal in my area, but I am intrigued to see Google get into the game.

Key differences between T-Mobile Data Stash and AT&T Rollover Data

As both T-Mobile and AT&T have recently introduced the ability to carry over unused data we understand it can be confusing to tell them apart. But, take a close look at the two plans and you’ll see that one is considerably better for users in the long run. T-Mobile, who was first out of the gate with its Data Stash, has the edge over AT&T who followed with Rollover Data.

Here’s a breakdown of how the two plans stack up against each other and why we think T-Mobile is the clear choice thus far.

Requirements

T-Mobile Data Stash comes with Simple Choice subscribers that have at least 3GB or more per month on a smartphone. Indeed, it works for tablets as well, provided the customer has at least 1GB of data or more per month. As of today this allows for the 3GB ($50/month) and 5GB ($60/month) customer to carry over unused data. Data Stash is available today.

AT&T’s Rollover Data works on any Mobile Share Value Plan, meaning anything from 300MB on up can qualify. Note that Rollover Data begins effective January 25, 2015.

Finer details

T-Mobile gives every eligible customer 10GB of free data to be used however they see fit. Need 1GB in March? Perhaps you’re 3GB over in May. Whatever, you have 10GB to play with in the event of overages or emergencies.

Note, however, that T-Mobile’s Data Stash doesn’t begin to roll over unused data until the initial 10GB bucket is used up. But, that’s not bad. Until you go through that first free allotted data pool, you’re really not dipping into anything outside of the monthly norm anyhow.

For the sake of comparing the two plans against each other we’ll work with a customer that gets 3GB of data per month.

Let’s say that you only use 2GB of the 3GB bucket after the first month (January). Both plans let the subscriber bank the extra 1GB of data. AT&T’s, however, rolls into the very next month (February), allowing for 4GB of data. Should you only need another 2GB of data in February you would not be looking at 2GB of accrued Rollover Data plus the 3GB bucket. Sadly, AT&T only lets you carry over that data for one billing period.

For T-Mobile, you could roll 1GB (January) plus another 1GB (February) into March for a combined 5GB in March. In fact, you can roll over as much data as you’d like for up to 12 months. After one year that first 1GB would fall off and so forth in the following month.

Sharing data

Assume, for a moment that you’re in a shared plan that allows for 20GB of data across multiple lines. A group on AT&T that only uses 18GB in January would get 2GB to carry over to February. It doesn’t matter how you use up the extra data but you’ll lose it if you don’t by the end of the month.

For T-Mobile customers, each line in a family plan with at least 3GB of data is eligible for Data Stash. Along those lines, each person can stash as much data as they want as an individual for up to 12 months.

Conclusion

At first blush it’s easy to call T-Mobile the winner here. Given the free bucket of data to get started, no overage fees, and long term banking, it’s the way we’d go if given the choice. Your personal results, though, may vary. Things to consider include coverage, data speeds, handset selection, rate plans, and more. Do you already have smartphones? How many of you will be using the account?

Regardless of which way you go in early 2015 you’re going to end up benefiting. This is the sort of thing we’d like to see happen across all major wireless providers.

MetroPCS promotion offers unlimited 4G LTE for $50 (Update)

MetroPCS on Wednesday introduced a new, limited time rate plan promotion which offers unlimited talk, text, and 4G LTE data for $50 per month. The deal, which begins immediately, runs through April 5 and stays put for an indefinite period. Customers must purchase a MetroPCS-branded LTE smartphone in order to qualify for the rate plan; no bring your own device  or CDMA subscribers this time around. UPDATE: Consumers do not need to buy a new device to be eligible for the $50 promotion, but the device must have originally been purchased from MetroPCS.

In addition to the promotional rate plan MetroPCS has improved its other offerings by bumping up the allotted data 1GB. The $40 rate plan now offers 2GB of data with unlimited talk and text. The $50 plan allows for 4GB of data while the $60 plan gives unlimited data.

MetroPCS is now selling the Samsung Galaxy Light for $49 and the LG Optimus F60 for $59.

MetroPCS is a prepaid brand that operates on T-Mobile’s network.

T-Mobile is attracting new customers and retaining existing ones

Earlier this month, T-Mobile recapped 2014 and proved to everyone that consumers are very much aware of the carrier’s advantages. T-Mobile does trail behind the other carrier’s in a few areas such as size, but there is one area that no one else can beat. When it comes to attracting new customers and retaining existing ones, T-Mobile is the winner. Research firm Consumer Intelligence Partners (CIRP) discovered that the amount of consumers feeling won over by T-Mobile was much greater than by Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint. Among the big four carriers, T-Mobile’s percentage of new customers and retained customers was unrivaled.

Deutsche Telekom CEO hopes for a T-Mobile merger in the future

Over the past few years, T-Mobile has been gaining some headway in the United States with the company’s Un-carrier initiative. Unfortunately, that might not get them to where they want to be, according to some higher-ups in the carrier world. In an interview with Re/code, Tim Hoettges, Deutsche Telekom CEO, explains that in order to compete with the likes of Verizon and AT&T, T-Mobile still needs “greater scale” in the US.

Sprint has been in talks with Deutsche Telekom about buying T-Mobile for the past few years. Thanks to US regulatory authorities, the deal ended up falling through because it would decrease the number of major US carriers from four to three. While this may have seemed like a positive situation at the time, Hoettges explains his thoughts on the matter:

I was intrigued by the idea of having a combination with Sprint and being the ‘super-maverick’ in the market. I hope that the political environment will change at one point in time.

While growing in marketshare and surpassing Sprint is an important feat to accomplish for the company, Hoettges says that the biggest hurdle is Verizon and AT&T’s concentration of wealth and spectrum that T-Mobile should be worried about. The CEO admits that while T-Mobile’s current Un-carrier initiative has been working so far, it won’t generate enough revenue to compete with the top two carriers. He says that T-Mobile will need to invest “between $4 billion and $5 billion each year just to keep up.”
