HTC One (M8) for T-Mobile to get Lollipop on February 10

t-mobile_htc_one_m8_update_021015_screengrab

The HTC One (M8) for T-Mobile was originally scheduled to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop in a software update sometime today. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be happening as there is an hour left in the day (on the east coast) and no such update has arrived. On T-Mobile’s support page for the HTC handset, February 10 is listed as the new date for Lollipop to start rolling out. The software update will be labeled as build 4.20.531.4 and the start of the roll out is tomorrow; therefore, it may take a few days for the update to reach all device owners.

Let us know in the comments when you receive the update.

T-Mobile Lollipop OTA for HTC One M8 landing on Feb. 9

one-m8-6

We are officially in full swing for OTA updates of Android 5.x Lollipop for a number of flagship devices. Last week was post after post of Samsung’s Galaxy S5 receiving the update, and now we get to inform you that the T-Mobile branded HTC One (M8) will start receiving the update this coming Monday, February 9th.

The news comes via a quick tweet from Mo, who says that T-Mobile has received the required Technical Approval for the update. While this does not offer a specific game plan or roll out schedule, the exact words “OTA to start on Monday” are still magic to the ears of those HTC One (M8) owners that have been holding their breath waiting for their shot at Lollipop.

Lollipop statue Android Google

As with the other carriers and unlocked editions, your HTC One (M8) will run Sense 6 along with the Material Design goodness of Android 5.0 Lollipop.

The update has taken a little longer than HTC’s promised 90 days from official Lollipop release to reach handsets. Now that it is arriving, you’ll at least have a few weeks to play with it before you get to decide if you’ll keep it, or upgrade hardware to the anticipated new HTC One (M9).

What aspect of Android Lollipop are you most looking forward to on your T-Mobile HTC One (M8)?

Sprint cares more about improving than its rank among carriers

marcelo_claure

As it stands today, Sprint holds the title as the third largest carrier in the United States. Only Verizon and AT&T stand in front of Sprint while T-Mobile watches from the back. But staying in third place seems difficult when John Legere has committed to putting Team Magenta ahead of Sprint by the end of 2015. T-Mobile has launched an attack on the wireless industry with competitive deals and unrivaled incentives.

Sprint has received plenty of negative attention due to the network’s quality being poor and pricing not matching service. Slowly though, things are changing because the carrier has invested in improving its network and introduced plenty of promotions. Marcelo Claure, the CEO of Sprint, feels that Legere is “in for a rude awakening” and will allow to “let actions speak.”

Hit the break for more.

Claure has pointed to the next report from Root Metrics to prove that Sprint’s coverage will have improved greatly. In fact, Chicago has apparently seen so much improvement from Sprint that the carrier is only behind Verizon there. Areas that have improved network quality are going to see Sprint advertising greatly increase. Claure wants to capitalize on the attention and build momentum. It will take some time to change many consumers’ perceptions of Sprint but doing so is definitely possible. Of course, Legere discredited Root Metrics and said Sprint should take data from Speedtest.net because the latter obtains it through actual consumers performing tests of their own.

Being third or fourth in the country does not matter to the Sprint CEO. Claure told CNET that “I’m focused on fixing the fundamentals whether we’re No. 3 or No. 4. Customers don’t care about rank. I’m not worried about whether we’re No. 3 or No. 4.”

Another set of new plans will be launched around April once the carrier finishes ongoing customer research. It will allow Sprint to try and differentiate itself from other carriers. While we do not know what the plans will entail, we can guess that data rollover is being explored considering everyone else (except Verizon) offers it.

The 10 most-tweeted commercials from Super Bowl XLIX

Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots Vs. Seattle Seahawks

It was a great night for Rob Gronkowski and the New England Patriots, but it wasn’t so good for our friend Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks. It also was a great night for brands trying to hold your attention for seconds with ads to get you talking on Twitter. From the usual highbrow suspects selling soda and beer, to toe fungus medication and superglue, here’s our take on the most-talked about spots from last night’s big game.

Budweiser – ‘Lost Dog’

Budweiser does a good job at tugging our collective heartstrings regularly and did it again this year with an adorable spot featuring a puppy who gets lost, and finds his way home thanks to the famous Clydesdales. Later on in the game, though, craft beer enthusiasts weren’t happy with this jab.

Always – #LikeAGirl

What does it mean to run #LikeAGirl? “It means run as fast as you can,” says the girl at the end of this ad by feminine products brand Always. The spot questions the common insult about doing something “like a girl”, reminding us that girls (and boys) can do amazing things.

Coca-Cola – #MakeItHappy

The internet is sometimes filled with hate and trolls, and it’d be a better world if we all were much nicer to each other — point taken. However, pouring soda accidentally on a server isn’t going to do much other than severely irritate an IT manager.

Supercell – ‘Angry Neeson’

This year we saw freemium apps getting airtime for the first time ever during the big game, one with model Kate Upton for Game of War and this hilarious spot by Supercell promoting Clash of Clans. Here, Liam Neeson plots his revenge on a mortal enemy, “bigbuffetboy85.”

Esurance #Sorta – with Lindsay Lohan and ‘Walter White

Lindsay Lohan driving a car is what Breaking Bad’s lead character is to working in a pharmacy. These ads try to get drivers to realize some insurance providers might charge based on similarities in demographics, versus letting people pay what’s right for them individually. Also, who trusted Lindsay to drive a car around children, even if on a closed set?

BMW i3 – ‘Newfangled Idea’

A little known segment on the ‘Today’ show in 1994 illustrated Bryant Gumbel’s lack of knowledge with the Internet and tried to talk it through with her then co-anchor (now Yahoo Global News Anchor) Katie Couric. Fast forward to 2015, it might be hard to understand how BMW’s all-electric (and self-parking) i3 works, but the duo did their best to understand it.

T-Mobile – #KimsDataStash

Kim wants us to take advantage of T-Mobile’s new Data Stash program (the one where you get to rollover your unused data from month to month). Not so we can have access to our email, but more so that we’re not deprived of her belfies selfies. Like the several she sent me via T-Mobile’s Twitter account.

Microsoft – ‘Braylon O’Neill’

Narrated by Common, Microsoft tells the story of Braylon, a boy born without the tibia and fibula bones in his legs, now replaced by prosthesis. Microsoft technology helps him thrive and live an active life.

Nationwide – ‘Make Safe Happen‘ and ‘Invisible Mindy

This ad illustrated a boy’s thrilling life had he not died in an accident. Sure, we all want to keep our kids safe from harm, but this ad upset more people than it inspired with its raw tone. One commenter on YouTube noted the ad was a “gut punch” to anyone who suffered a loss. It was the second ad Nationwide aired, noting its first was a more humorous one featuring an “invisible” Mindy Kaling.

Nissan – ‘With Dad’

There were a lot of “Dad” commercials during the game which folks noticed on Twitter en masse. To the tune of Harry Chapin’s ‘Cats In the Cradle,’ this focuses on a race car driver who’s son was growing up with him often away at his job, but at the end realizes he’s missing a lot of his upbringing. While some argue the song is more about a bad dad, the commercial is trying to focus on a distant father, who in this case might be able to make up for some lost time with a new car. So everything’s okay. Right, Nissan?

Which of these ads did you talk about the most?

AWS-3 spectrum auction yields $45 billion in bids, AT&T at top of heap

fcc_aws3_auction

The FCC recently completed an auction of AWS-3 spectrum raising almost $45 billion in bids in the process. The amount raised was quite a bit more than the FCC’s last big spectrum auction held in 2008 when they raised $19.1 billion selling 700MHz spectrum. The big player in this round turned out to be AT&T which bid nearly $18.2 billion for 251 licenses. The biggest chunk of those were in the New York City metro area. AT&T says the new spectrum helps them cover 96 percent of the U.S. population with AWS-3 spectrum.

In a bit of surprise, the second largest bidder was DISH which grabbed $13.3 billion worth of spectrum. DISH has been hoping to start up a terrestrial LTE network to augment their satellite offerings, so this latest purchase may help them with that goal. The other large bidders included Verizon and T-Mobile who also hope to strengthen their networks in anticipation of expanding their advanced network offerings in the coming years. Sprint did not participate in this auction as they prepare to invest in 600MHz spectrum in an auction scheduled for next year.

T-Mobile unveils two Super Bowl ads starring Chelsea Handler, Sarah Silverman and Rob Riggle

T-Mobile Super Bowl ad

A few days ago, T-Mobile released a new ad starring Kim Kardashian to debut during this year’s Super Bowl XLIX. T-Mobile recently announced ‘Data Stash’ – a new way for customers to roll over unused data from month to month – and that seems to be the theme of the carrier’s Super Bowl advertisements. The Un-carrier has just unveiled two new ads set to debut this Sunday, and they’re quite hilarious.

#1 – Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman | T-Mobile Behind the Scenes Teaser Video

While the full advertisement won’t air until Super Bowl Sunday, the newest ad starring Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman should be quite a hit. T-Mobile claims that Handler and Silverman basically wrote the whole thing. The carrier gave the two comedians a topic, and they essentially did whatever they wanted with it. This is an early look at what the ad will feature.

#2 – Data Vulture

This next one stars comedian Rob Riggle and a giant vulture, and was produced specifically to live stream during the game through NBC’s Sports Live Extra app. The ad talks about Data Stash, and how T-Mobile’s Un-carrier initiatives have been changing the mobile industry.

Speaking of live streaming the big game, NBC will allow you to stream up to 11 hours of Super Bowl XLIX content through the Sports Live Extra app for free. If you’re interested, head to the Google Play Store to download the app.

AT&T and Dish were the big spenders in the FCC’s wireless auction

AT&T store

There’s no doubt that companies spent a ton of money in the FCC’s latest wireless auction — $44.9 billion of it, to be precise. But who was it that was so eager to part with their cash? You don’t have to wonder for much longer. The FCC has revealed the winning bidders, and there’s little doubt as to who the frontrunners are. AT&T was by far the biggest spender. It shelled out almost $18.2 billion for 251 licenses to use that coveted AWS-3 spectrum, or nearly three times what it spent on 700MHz frequencies back in 2008. Dish, meanwhile, made its broadband ambitions pretty clear by snapping up a sizable $13.3 billion in airwaves.

As for the others involved? Verizon certainly wasn’t conservative, having bid $10.4 billion, but that’s not a big leap versus the $9.3 billion it spent acquiring 700MHz spectrum years ago. Also, smaller carriers didn’t have much of a stake in this auction. T-Mobile ponied up a ‘modest’ $1.7 billion, and Sprint already said that it would sit things out in favor of the 600MHz auction coming in 2016. All told, most of the newly available wireless bandwidth is headed to just a handful of companies, only one of which is a relative newcomer. That’s good to hear if you’re one of their subscribers (especially if you regularly deal with congested networks), but it’s lousy if you were hoping for an abundance of fresh competition.

T-Mobile debuts another Super Bowl ad and a behind-the-scenes look for yet another

T-Mobile_Super_Bowl_Ad_Rob_Riggle_01
