Sprint CEO calls out the Uncarrier and Legere as a “fake show”

sprint-carrier

When it comes to being bold and edgy, T-Mobile CEO John Legere constantly takes the cake. Legere isn’t afraid to move beyond the typical PR responses and jabs that we see from companies like AT&T and Verizon, and it’s his loose cannon personality that has at least partially attributed to T-Mobile’s recent reputation as the “cool” carrier. As it turns out, however, Legere isn’t the only one in the business willing to speak his mind.

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure has now responded to Legere calling Sprint’s new All-In plans a “Swing and a miss”. Taking to Twitter, Claure fired off several tweets making his stance on the uncarrier pretty clear:

@JohnLegere I am so tired of your Uncarrier bullshit when you are worse than the other two carriers together. Your cheap misleading lease imitation is a joke.

You trick people to believe that they have a 15 dollar iPhone lease payment when it’s not true. You tell them they can upgrade up to 3x but you don’t tell them the price goes up to 27 dollars when they do.

You say one thing but behave completely different. It’s all a fake show. So its really #Tmobilelikehell.

Whether you agree with Sprint’s CEO or feel it’s just an angry response to T-Mobile’s aggressive marketing techniques, there are at least some that feel that Legere’s bad boy-esque attitude is more of a gimmick to make the company seem edgy. One thing is for sure though, the wireless industry has certainly changed a lot since the uncarrier initiative began, and for the better.

Even if Claure’s response seems more like a childish tantrum than anything, it’s still at least semi-refreshing to see another CEO in the wireless industry not afraid to get a little dirty and move beyond the PR-speak. Either way, it’s time to grab the popcorn and sit down — We imagine a direct response from Legere isn’t too far off and we’ll be sure to update this post when it happens.

Sprint’s CEO is tired of T-Mobile’s ‘Uncarrier bullshit’

Bolivian Marcelo Claure, founder and pre

John Legere is famous for being the sweariest man in the mobile industry, but it looks as if Sprint’s Marcelo Claure now wants a run at that title. In response to a snarky tweet by the T-Mobile CEO, Claure responded by saying that he was tired of Legere’s “Uncarrier bullshit.” He went on a four-tweet takedown of the company’s policies, saying that it “trick[s] people,” and that it’s “all a fake show,” before adding the hashtag #Tmobilelikehell. We’re fairly sure that everyone who saw the exchange made the same ooo noise that pre-schoolers do when they know there’s about to be a fight in the sandbox.

The mobile war for America’s hearts, minds and wallets has become increasingly savage in the last few years. AT&T and Verizon often throw gentle shade at each other in commercials, but the third-placed Sprint and fourth-placed T-Mobile are more nakedly hostile. Legere himself has offered many an inappropriate comment about his rivals, and once said “the fuckers hate you” when describing the attitudes of the top two toward their customers.

It’s a strategy that’s paid off, since T-Mobile has gained more than a million new customers every three months for the last two years — many of whom were former Sprint users. In fact, the gap between third and fourth place is so close that, it’s conceivable that the pair could switch places in the very near future, something that would only add pressure on Claure. Maybe we’ll invite the pair to come over to our place, grab some beers and relax — after all, it’s only business.

Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure tells John Legere that T-Mobile’s Un-carrier tactics are “bullshit”

marcelo_claure

Marcelo Claure is not the man to mess around with in the wireless industry. Why? Because he will directly call bullshit on you. That is exactly what Sprint’s CEO did to John Legere of T-Mobile following the latter’s tactics becoming all too much to handle.

On Wednesday evening, Legere took a jab at Sprint because of its recent All-In flub that required some changes. In addition to tweeting that the carrier had swung and missed with its new plan, Legere linked to an article from Re/code that highlights disappointment with Sprint.

Claure was not happy.

marcelo_claure_john_legere_tweet_exchange_070215

The Sprint CEO, who is among the highest paid compared to his competitors, launched a series of tweets replying to Legere, claiming that T-Mobile’s new JUMP! On Demand program is a ripoff. Claure says that the program is a trap and Legere’s company has failed to inform consumers that continuously upgrading raises the monthly price. T-Mobile’s business practices, according to Claure, is a “fake show.” The best part from Claure’s tweets comes down to a single word: bullshit. He was so fed up in his very first tweet that he told Legere that T-Mobile’s Un-carrier tactics are “bullshit.”

For those of you unable to keep track of the conversation’s reverse layout, we have organized Claure’s brief rant:

“I am so tired of your Uncarrier bullshit when you are worse than the other two carriers together. So its really #Tmobilelikehell”

Legere has yet to issue a response to Claure but that will not remain for long. We are guaranteed to see him say or do something over the top to get back at Claure’s frustration becoming apparent.

All I have left to say is that #Tmobilelikehell does not roll off the tongue as well as #sprintlikehell.

Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile’s CEOs are paid…. a lot

marcelo_claure

One would expect that the carriers in the United States pay their chief executive officers by performance. By that assumption, the total compensation for Lowell McAdam, Randall Stephenson, Marcelo Claure, and John Legere would be in order of their employers’ position in the market. That, however, is not the case. The total compensation for each CEO really varies because each company has a different set of incentives on top of base salaries.

So who is the highest paid leader among carriers in the United States? Hit the break to find out.

randall_stephenson_att

During the fiscal year that ended in March 2015, AT&T Randall Stephenson earned nearly $24 million, easily trumping the competition. Lowell McAdam, Verizon’s CEO, actually came in fourth at $18.3 million. Sprint’s Marcelo Claure and T-Mobile’s John Legere were surprisingly ahead of Lowell with $21.8 million and $18.57 million, respectively. Why is it surprising? Verizon is the nation’s largest carrier, Sprint is constantly getting heat for its network’s quality, and T-Mobile is still rising. It would make sense, in looking at it that way, for Stephenson and McAdam to be the highest paid.

Sprint defended Claure’s total compensation by saying that comparing it to the other CEOs is unfair and that he had several one-time payments when hired.

Here is what the Big Four’s CEOs earned in the last fiscal year:

  • Randall Stephenson (AT&T): $23.98 million
  • Marcelo Claure (Sprint): $21.8 million
  • John Legere (T-Mobile): $18.57 million
  • Lowell McAdam (Verizon): $18.3 million

For the current fiscal year, I would expect Legere’s total compensation to see the most change. The carrier is investing a lot in its network and adding customers at a rapid pace. The likelihood of being acquired by an even bigger company will certainly help, too.

T-Mobile extends two of its data plan promotions until July 14

T-Mobile_Logo_01_TA

Communications sent to T-Mobile employees show that the carrier is extending promotions on a couple of its data plans. T-Mobile planned to remove the two for $100 or four for $100 data plan promotions today, but has now extended until July 14.

If you buy two 4G LTE Unlimited data plans with T-Mobile, through July 14 it’ll only cost you $100 for two. New customers are still able to sign-up for T-Mobile 4 for $100 promotion in 2.5GB or 4.5GB amounts. T-Mobile plans on honoring the promotion pricing, even after the sale ends on July 14. You can check out all of the sweet details in the communication posted below.

These are some really sweet deals the carrier is offering. Now is the time to make the jump from your current carrier to T-Mobile, if you’ve been considering it. In addition to these promotions, T-Mobile is also currently running its Un-carrier Amped campaign, building on a bunch of features they announced when they launched the Un-carrier initiative, such as its JUMP! program.

Anyone making the jump to T-Mobile?

GoSmart Mobile introducing new $30 plan – unlimited talk, text and web

GoSmart_Logo_Black

GoSmart Mobile offers some of the most interesting plans in the prepaid market. Today they extend their options by adding a completely new offer. This new tier costs $30 a month and includes unlimited talk, text and data.

US customers have plenty of prepaid options to choose from, but the issue is most of these follow some sort of cookie cutter range of plans with no significant differences. GoSmart Mobile differentiates itself by providing a very unique data system.

gosmart-man

Ultimately, data is unlimited, but not at its fullest capacity. With this plan users can get 1 GB of 3G data per month, after which they will be throttled to 2G speeds. The good news is social networking buffs won’t be suffering too much. Every plan includes unlimited 4G LTE access to Facebook, which could be a life saver to some.

This will make a huge difference to those who play around with Facebook often. Especially if you are one who enjoys watching those fun videos, uploading images and the like. We may not think too much of Facebook at times, but it sure can take a toll on your data consumption!

gosmart-plans

The prepaid carrier is owned and supported by T-Mobile, so you will be at the mercy of their network (which is not a bad thing, at all). Interested customers can go ahead and sign up at GoSmart Mobile’s official website starting tomorrow, June 28th.

GoSmart Mobile goes on to emphasize “all monthly prices are as-advertised (without any hidden fees or auto-pay requirements), and come without any ridiculous strings attached.” Just like T-Mobile, this carrier does stick to its promises. This is truly a no strings attached deal, and they even make it easy to bring in your own unlocked smartphone.

Convincing enough? It does sound like an awesome deal to the heavy Facebook user. Who is signing up?

T-Mobile’s new Jump! On Demand program will let you upgrade your phone 3x per year

T-Mobile’s Jump! early upgrade program has been around for awhile now, allowing users to upgrade their devices early as long as they pay a premium every month. As part of its recently-announced “Un-carrier Amped” initiative, T-Mobile has just introduced an upgrade to the Jump! program, which might prove useful for many consumers out there. It’s called “Jump! On Demand”, and the premise is actually quite simple.

Once you sign up for the new program, T-Mobile will give you a brand new smartphone at no extra cost, as long as you agree to lease the device monthly like you would on any other payment plan. If you want a new phone at any time, T-Mobile will let you upgrade up to three times per year. You’ll need to trade in your current phone, which must be in good condition, but that’s really one of the only caveats here.

Now instead of having to pay the $10 premium each month for the ability to upgrade early, if you sign up for the plan, you’ll just need to pay the monthly cost for your device (and the cost of your plan, of course). So to clarify, you’ll owe no upgrade fee, no taxes on the new phone, and no additional monthly fee. This is certainly a great plan for someone who always wants the latest and greatest, but if you’re someone who likes to hold on to your old smartphones, this isn’t the deal for you.

Jump! On Demand will launch Sunday, June 28th, and will unfortunately be available for only a few smartphones at the start:

It should be noted that if you receive a smartphone through Jump! On Demand and choose not to upgrade early anymore, at the end of your 18-month lease, you can go about it three different ways. Either you can turn in the smartphone (in good condition) and pay nothing more, upgrade to your next phone and start a new plan, or pay off the remaining balance on your device and keep it. If you want to keep the smartphone, the “final payment” equals the total retail cost of the phone, minus what you’ve paid on it so far.

There’s a lot to digest here, so if you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below. And be sure to stay tuned for more Un-carrier Amped announcements in the coming weeks.

T-Mobile announces ‘JUMP! On Demand’, trade your phone in up to 3 times a year

We knew that John Legere would be making another Un-Carrier announcement today that would take a bolder approach to its previous offerings. We weren’t sure exactly what the bad boy of wireless would bring to the table this go around, but we expected something big. The first of what we assume will be many announcements over the next few weeks/months, is called JUMP! on Demand. It is sort of what Sprint has been doing for a while now. You basically get to lease a phone for a small monthly fee on your bill and trade it in, in good working non-warranty void status, and get something else. For instance, you walk into T-Mobile and get yourself a LG G4 because you want to give it a run, but you really want the Note 5 later this year. Go for it. Bring the G4 back and trade it back in for the Note 5.

T-Mobile offers up the iPhone 6 as an example price device on JUMP! on Demand as being $15 a month. Just because you COULD jump to something else doesn’t mean you ave to though. You can make the payments for 18 months and then purchase the device. In the iPhone 6 example, you would shell out $164 to buy it after that 18 month lease period. However, you are more than welcome to trade that iPhone 6 in during the lease period and get something else plus, they will let you do that up to 3 times in a year. You could feasibly have a new phone every 4 months if you wanted too. The fine print also states that after the 18 month lease term you either have to buy the device or trade it in. Not that it is a big deal really, and who wants to keep a device over 18 months? Except maybe as a spare back up anyways. Mind you, this all has $0 down, $0 fees and there isn’t even any sales tax. Check out the 2.5 minute from John Legere. FYI, a bit NSFW if your workplace can’t handle a little profanity.

This really won’t be all that it is cracked up to be for a small set of users out there. Yes, I am talking to you modders and ROM junkies. Anything that would void a warranty will likely disqualify your trade-in. Although, the fine print doesn’t mention anything about that, it just states the device needs to be in good physical condition and working. I would assume that as long as you put it back to stock before trade-in then no one would really care.

The JUMP! on Demand option also kills off that $10 monthly JUMP! fee that allowed you to jump devices yearly. If you are an average user who takes good care of their equipment, then JUMP! on Demand is going to rock. Not only will it lower your monthly bill, but you will be that cool kid with all the latest phones without breaking the bank. The new option isn’t available just yet though, it officially goes into effect June 28th, that is this Sunday. I am headed to the store today to get the wife the LG G4, so I will see how it all works out when I am there. Hopefully there is an enrolment period so I don’t have to wait 2 days to get her a new phone.
