T-Mobile continues momentum, passes Sprint to become third biggest US carrier
T-Mobile is now the nation’s third biggest wireless carrier. The “Un-Carrier”, headed up by brash CEO John Legere announced that T-Mobile added 2.1 million customers last quarter, pulling them past Sprint into third.
After months of speculation, including statements from the CEO himself as far back as February, it seems official that T-Mobile has finally surpassed Sprint. T-Mobile now boasts an impressive 58.9 million customers and has added at least one million more customers each of the last nine quarters. Sprint has claimed that they now have 56.8 million customers lagging only slightly behind “Big Magenta”.
“T-Mobile’s momentum continued in full force for the second quarter, with 2.1 million customers voting in favor of the Un-carrier… Now we are doubling down again with Un-carrier Amped! Once again making it absolutely clear that….We Won’t Stop!“
T-Mobile has been shaking up the mobile industry ever since the “Un-Carrier 1″ event where T-Mobile did away with phone contracts and introduced 0% financing of phones. They’ve continued the trend in more consumer friendly moves included letting customers stream music from pre-selected services that won’t count against your data and being able to upgrade phones multiple times in the same year.
Competitors are obviously feeling the heat. Passing Sprint is the biggest sign of this, but T-Mobile has forced AT&T and Verizon to move toward offering phone financing and doing away with contracts. Rival Sprint has tried to follow T-Mobile’s lead, and in some cases beat them to the punch by offering the same “Carrier Freedom” initiative. Sprint, like T-Mobile, offers to pay off the penalty levied against consumers when they break their two year contract early. They’ve even gone so far as to offer to halve customer’s bills if they join from AT&T or Verizon. But it doesn’t appear to be enough to stem the magenta tide.

T-Mobile overtakes Sprint as 3rd largest U.S. carrier
It’s official – T-Mobile has passed by Sprint to move up a rung on the ladder to the top of the U.S. wireless carrier rankings. With 58.9 million subscribers, T-Mobile has officially become the third largest carrier in the U.S. This was determined after Sprint released their latest earnings report showing they had 57 million subscribers.
Despite losing their spot, Sprint did manage to put up some decent numbers during the quarter compared to past performance. Sprint managed to add 675,000 new customers this past quarter versus a loss of 620,000 a year ago. Sprint also noted that they had only 1.56 percent churn, so they are managing to hang on to customers much better now.
After undergoing some executive changes, Sprint has slowly been implementing efforts to turn around past performance. This has included some new plans like their recent All-In plans and the accompanying marketing effort that includes David Beckham. Sprint has likely moved past some of the network growing pains they experienced in recent years to be able to offer more consistent coverage as well.
Do you think Sprint will be able to catch back up to T-Mobile?

T-Mobile officially passes Sprint as the third-largest mobile carrier in the US
T-Mobile has been growing its overall number of subscribers in the United States pretty rapidly throughout the past few months, adding anywhere between one and two million just about every quarter. At the same time, Sprint has been seeing an increasing number of subscriber losses or gains that just can’t compete with those of the Un-carrier. We all pretty much knew this would happen eventually, and now, according to Sprint and T-Mobile’s most recent quarterly earnings reports, T-Mobile has finally overtaken Sprint as the third-largest mobile carrier in the United States.
Sprint has just reported its financial results for the first fiscal quarter in 2015, which ended on June 30th. The carrier reported a gain of 675,000 net subscribers in this time period, 310,000 of which are considered postpaid additions. The company lost 366,000 prepaid subscribers in the first fiscal quarter as well. At the end of this quarter, Sprint reported that it now has 56.8 million subscribers, compared to T-Mobile’s 58.9 million subscribers in the quarter ending at the same time.
This news should come at no surprise to anyone. T-Mobile has been constantly pushing for lower prices, more benefits for its subscribers, as well as a number of valuable promotions to get new customers on board. Although Sprint has been trying to rival most of the moves the Un-carrier makes, it’s now very clear that T-Mobile has been making some great strides in the mobile space.
T-Mobile’s Un-carrier campaign massively successful, reports double-digit revenue growth for Q2 2015

Since John Legere took over as CEO of the floundering T-Mobile in 2012, incredible strides have been made in resurrecting the magenta mobile carrier. Unless you live under a rock or don’t really pay attention to tech news, you probably have heard of the widely discussed “Un-carrier” campaign launched by Legere that has breathed new life into T-Mobile and jumpstarted new life into the mobile industry by prompting other mobile carriers to change their policies in response to their caped crusading competitor.
Just how successful has the Un-carrier campaign been for T-Mobile? Well Q2 2015 reports are in and the answer is outstanding.
T-Mobile has reported a 14% revenue growth and 25% adjusted EBITDA since last year’s Q2 2014. Additionally, the carrier reports that for the 9th consecutive quarter, T-Mobile has acquired over 1 million new net customer additions (2.1 million this quarter to be precise).
“While the carriers continue to use gimmicks to confuse consumers, T-Mobile continues to listen to customers and respond with moves that blow them away,” Legere had to say in the company press release. “On top of adding 2.1 million new customers in the second quarter, we delivered 14% year-over-year revenue growth and 25% year-over-year Adjusted EBITDA growth. Overall, I think our results speak for themselves.”
This growth means that T-Mobile now has a total of 58.9 million customers.

Sprint counters T-Mobile with 10GB of shared family data
The battle between Sprint and T-Mobile for the hearts and phone lines of America’s families is heating up. T-Mobile recently updated its Simple Choice family plan to give a pair of people unlimited calling and text, as well as 10GB of data to each of them for $!00 a month. On Wednesday, Sprint fired back with a revamped Family Share Pack. This package offers four lines, unlimited talk, text and 10GB of shared data for $100 to families that switch from another carrier. Even with twice as many lines, the 10GB of data still averages out to more per person (2.5GB) than T-Mobile’s offering. And if 10GB isn’t enough, Sprint also announced that it will sell a 40GB plan for $20 more per month, $120 in total.

T-Mobile will swap your iPhone 6 for the next model at no extra cost
If you’ve ever had to upgrade an iPhone months after launch, you’ve likely felt some anxiety: you need a new device right now, but you know you’ll feel buyer’s remorse when the next model shows up in September. T-Mobile thinks it can set your mind at ease, however. It’s launching a promo that lets you swap the iPhone 6 for its successor while locking in the $15 per month JUMP On Demand lease price — so long as you buy the existing handset by September 7th, you just have to trade it in to upgrade. You’ll also get first dibs on the next iPhone if you order it from the carrier within the first two days of availability, so you shouldn’t be waiting for days simply because you ordered a few minutes too late.
You’re also getting a perk that applies whether or not you care for shiny new hardware. T-Mobile now includes Apple Music as part of its Music Freedom effort, letting you stream albums and playlists on the fledgling service as much as you like without denting your monthly data cap. It’s not a surprising move (virtually every significant music provider is covered at this stage), but it’ll definitely make life easier if you absolutely have to listen to some T Swift during your commute.

Android 5.1 Lollipop now rolling out to the T-Mobile HTC One M9

If you’ve been waiting for the update to Android 5.1 Lollipop to make its way to your HTC One M9 on T-Mobile, your wait is almost up. Starting today, T-Mobile is rolling out Android 5.1 to One M9 handsets on its network, bringing the software version number up to 2.7.531.6.
The update brings some notable battery improvements to the device, and will also make Google Wallet a pre-installed application from here on out. The One M9 is also receiving a new “Anti-theft” feature, according to the carrier, which Google refers to as factory reset protection in its Android 5.1 changelog. The T-Mobile One M9 already received the big camera-improving update that began rolling out a few months ago, so there likely won’t be many big improvements on this front with the new update.

T-Mobile Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge update rolling out, battery improvements
Folks who have either variant of the Galaxy S6 on T-Mobile are getting a treat this morning, in the form of an update. It’s not a huge update, but there’s something significant in changelog: “Battery improvements”.
If you’ve been tracking the Galaxy S6 at all, I’m sure you’ve heard that its battery life is nothing to write home about. Actually, it’s quite poor for a flagship these days. Therefore, any said battery improvement stands out like a sore thumb.
In addition, the ~ 103 MB update is bringing “Various bug fixes and device improvements” to both models. The S6 Edge is receiving a Cocktailbar error fix on top of that, which pertains to a “Unfortunately, Cocktailbar service has stopped” issue in the Edge Screen settings.
It was reported that the phones had a recurring battery drain bug with VoLTE, so hopefully the battery improvements address this. Hit up your Software update button (Settings>About Device) to see if the OTA update has reached you. For the impatient folk, you can grab the download via the source links below.
