‘Uncharted 4’ looks like a ghost from E3’s past

“>

We knew Uncharted 4 was coming, but tonight we got to see something much better looking than our tease from last E3 and the PlayStation Experience event from late last year. The game looks great with lots of destruction (tiles falling off walls during a firefight, for example), but also packs in familiarity for better or for worse: Armored patrol carriers careen through walls in dogged pursuit of protagonist Nathan Drake, and the market fight sequence felt awfully reminiscent of the Uncharted 2 reveal from many E3s prior. “>

Drake gets into some vehicular mayhem of his own, knocking out wooden supports from terraces that overlook alleys. The scale feels much bigger, however, based on the onstage demo tonight from Sony’s media briefing. The whole time, Drake’s accompanied by Sully, offering comic relief, moral support and hopefully a neckbrace to help prevent whiplash. And sadly, we still don’t have a release date — just that “2016” window from this past March.

Check out Sony’s 2015 E3 conference live

Sony E3

Sony’s setting itself up for a pretty big 2016 — with the release of the Project Morpheus virtual reality headset, a remastered Ratchet & Clank title and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End all expected next year. But does that mean there’s nothing to look forward to in the second half of 2015? Watch as Sony outlines its plan for this year and beyond at 6PM PT (9PM ET) on June 15th. You can expect the company to discuss first-party franchises (possibly including some that have yet to make their PS4 debut) as well as the upcoming roster of third-party and indie titles. Heck, there might even be a few last-gen titles that have earned the right to a “remastered” makeover. Check out the livestream below and rest assured we’ll have all the news from the event in our liveblog right here.

The PlayStation 4 is getting a media player

PS4 media player icon

Believe it or not, Sony couldn’t even wait for its E3 event to get started to share some news about the PlayStation 4. The company is launching a media player for its console with some playback features you might miss from your PS3. It’ll stream media from DLNA-compatible devices on your local network, for a start, and you can plug in a USB drive if you’d rather play locally-stored music and videos. The player should be available later tonight, so it won’t be long before you can try it for yourself.

‘The Last Guardian’ is still happening and it’s coming to PS4 in 2016

The Last Guardian. It still exists and Sony opened its big E3 showcase with footage of a toga-clad boy exploring ancient structures with his giant behaving-like-a-pet Fox-Hawk-Dog beast. Fumito Ueda’s beautiful on-off-on-again game is filled with the stylistic licks of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, but now with the power of PS4 beating behind it. The E3 event finally showed off how the game will play out, with your beastly buddy doing its fair share of destructive creation — and also coming through in a pinch. The long-delayed title is coming next year. Can you believe it?

Sony already has over 30 Project Morpheus VR games in the works

We’re ready and waiting for Sony’s E3 press conference later today, but for now you can get yourself amped up for its PlayStation 4 virtual reality initiative, Project Morpheus, with an early look by Wired. The big news? There are already more than 30 VR games in the works, according to Sony Worldwide Studio’s Shuhei Yoshida. And while all of them won’t be ready for launch, it sounds like Sony and its developer partners are making a concerted effort to push the VR experience forward. “You think everything’s going to fall into one of four categories-sports, shooters, action, etc.-and that’s not the case,” said Adam Boyes, Sony’s VP of developer relations. “Because developers have such great access to VR tools in general, they’re just throwing everything at the wall.” Project Morpheus is still expected to land early next year, and Sony reps say that the Morpheus headset will likely go for “several hundred dollars.”

Boyes says some of the current VR projects include puzzle games, relaxation games or simply first-person exploration games. Impulse Gear, one of the studios developing Morpheus experiences, has also been working on a way to make shooting more realistic in virtual reality. It’s created a prototype gun peripheral that takes advantage of Sony’s Move motion controller, as well as the innards of the PS3’s DualShock controller, for some truly accurate virtual fragging. That’s a step beyond the standard keyboard/mouse and gaming controller interaction we’ve seen from competitors like Oculus, but right now Impulse Gear’s peripheral is still pretty experimental.

While competition for VR platform of choice is going to be fierce over the next few years, Sony has a few advantages. For one, it’s relying on the PlayStation 4, a console that’s already in millions of homes and will only get cheaper over time. Oculus and HTC’s Vive, on the other hand, connect to expensive gaming PCs. While the total cost of an Oculus VR setup could run you around $1,500, you’ll most likely be able to get a PS4 and Morpheus headset for about half as much. Being a closed platform also makes it easier for developers to build for Project Morpheus — they don’t have to worry as much about varying CPU and video card speeds.

Sony hack ’caused’ f-bombs to go out on British daytime TV

Paul Newman

Did you know that the Sony hack, amongst other things, caused scores of British children to hear some salty language on TV? That’s what the UK’s telecommunications authority believes after the company showed the adults-only version of a classic film in the early afternoon. Sony-owned channel Movie Mix showed the Paul Newman courtroom drama The Verdict on December 14th, and in one scene, characters drop f-bombs as if they were candy wrappers. The excuse for such flagrant sweariness was that when Sony’s servers were hacked, a nefarious type had “erased” the safe-for-daytime-viewing version of the flick, with the unedited version taking its place.

As far as excuses go, it’s a bit like using the death of a relative you didn’t know you had to justify not doing your homework a year after the event took place. That’s mostly because the film was meant to be checked by a human operator before broadcast, who clearly omitted to make sure the characters said “don’t duck with this case” instead of the other thing. Sony, for its part, apologized for the error and said that procedures had been tightened up ensure it wouldn’t happen again. The company managed to get away with a stern warning, but heavier penalties could be brought to bear should it, for instance, arrange a 3pm screening of The Wolf of Wall Street during the school holidays. Of course, we do have to ask — how many tweens are watching 1982 courtroom dramas when they could be vegging out in front of Teletubbies or, you know, playing with their Amiibos.

Tearaway Unfolded arrives adorably to PS4 on September 8th

Ready to guide a papercraft “You” through a world of hugs, malevolent squirrels and craft projects again? Yes, Tearaway Unfolded is coming at last to Sony’s PS4 console on September 8th. The game is a remake of the Tearaway on PS Vita, but reworked extensively with better graphics and support for the PS4’s DualShock 4 controllers. For instance, you can use the DualShock as a torch to attract (and then dispatch) enemy critters or catch objects “thrown” by on-screen characters. It’ll cost the same $39.99 as the popular Vita original, and early adopters will get a limited “Crafted” edition with custom decor, costumes and the Tearaway Unfolded soundtrack.

Unlocked Sony Xperia Z3+ goes up for pre-order in the UK

Sony-Xperia-Z4 (8)Sony’s Xperia Z3+ (or Xperia Z4, depending on what country you’re in) is just a few days away from a global release, but it’s not too late to lock in a pre-order if you’re itching to get your hands on the device as quickly as possible.

UK retailer Carphone Warehouse is selling the exclusive Ice Green color Z3+ complete with a bundle that includes a set of headphones, a three month subscription to Tidal, and six music album downloads. It’s expected in store on June 26th.

Clove is also still taking pre-orders for the unlocked device with the price tag sitting at £549, which is pretty standard for a flagship device.

Sony’s Xperia Z3+ features a very modest spec bump over the original Z3, with a 1080p 5.2-inch screen, a Snapdragon 810 CPU with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, and a 20.7 megapixel camera. It’s still waterproof, which has always been a big selling point on Sony’s flagship Xperia devices.
