Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact leak out showing fingerprint scanner functionality

Fingerprint scanners are all the rage now, with basically every manufacturer jumping on the craze and putting one on their flagship devices. The jury’s still out about whether they work or not to increase your device’s security, but it seems to be a selling point at the very least. So it should be no surprise that it looks like Sony will be implementing a fingerprint scanner on their upcoming flagship devices, the Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact. In the picture below, the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact were spotted sitting next to an iPhone presumably to demonstrate the similar technology:
We can really only see the Xperia Z5 from this angle, but the size difference is clear between the closest device and the device on the far end, the Z5 Compact. What’s noteworthy about the Xperia Z5 is that the fingerprint scanner appears to be integrated with the power button – gone is the circular power button of previous Xperias. As a result, the volume buttons have shifted much further down than usual. Obviously, since neither of these devices have been announced, we’ll have to take this news with a grain of salt, but it all appears to be within the realm of definite possibility.

PlayStation Now game streaming officially arrives on Vita and PS TV
If you’ve been itchin’ to give PlayStation Now’s streaming a go on your gaming handheld, the wait is over. The subscription service officially arrived on the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV, delivering access to over 125 games on those two devices. PlayStation Now had been available on the Vita and PlayStation TV in beta form for months, but now it’s making a proper debut after hitting the PS3 back in May. In addition to equipping two more gaming gadgets with the service, five new titles are being added this month. Joining the library of titles in August are Dynasty Warriors 8, MX vs. ATV Supercross, Bomberman Ultra, The Last Guy and, most importantly, God of War III. With new games being added on the regular and Sony offering newcomers a free one-week trial, there’s really now excuse for PlayStation owners to take the service for a test drive.

Sony boosts the midrange, with the camera-focused Xperia C5 Ultra and Xperia M5
Last week we got word that Sony had something to show us, focused on camera improvements for the Xperia line. Today is the day, and Sony has revealed not one but two Xperia smartphones. In short, we have above-midrange performers, aimed to appeal to either large or small smartphone lovers.
Xperia C5 Ultra
Implied by the “Ultra” suffix, the Xperia C5 Ultra is the phablet offering of the pair. It has a huge 6″ display to satisfy your large screen lust. Imagery is the game here, and selfie-takers are not forgotten about. The C5 Ultra has twin 13 megapixel front and rear cameras, both rocking Sony’s new Exmor RS sensor.
It is assumed that this is the IMX230 stacked sensor that Sony had been developing. Interestingly, they are touting Hybrid Auto-Focus, when Sony previously only outlined the 192-point Phase Detection Auto-Focus (PDAF) capability of the sensor. We’ve seen Qualcomm discuss Hybrid AF in the past, which utilizes both PDAF and laser AF. But Sony hasn’t indicated in their press release that they’re using a laser AF.
The rear and front cameras both use wide-angle lenses to fit more into the image, 25mm and 22mm, respectively. The front camera includes an LED flash. Both sensors are HDR capable and have image stabilization (Sony typically does software stabilization, not OIS).
Here’s what we know about the other specs:
- Display: 6″ 1080P IPS LCD
- SoC: Octa-core processor at 1.7 GHz (the SoC manufacturer is not stated)
- Memory: 2GB of RAM
- Storage: 16GB on-board, up to 200GB microSD expansion
- Battery: 2,930 mAh
- OS: Android 5.0 Lollipop
Bear in mind that this one is not water/dust-proof, for whatever reason. But the C5 Ultra does include Sony’s 2-day battery life promise. Design-wise, we have the same Sony story, but side bezels are significantly reduced. We can see top and bottom speaker grills for a stereo audio experience. There are 3 options for colors: Black, white, or mint.
Xperia M5
Sony has been known to deliver with regard to compact phones (i.e. Xperia Z3 compact). The new Xperia M5 is no exception, and is actually more powerful than the C5 Ultra. We’re looking at a 5″ display. And unlike the C5 Ultra, the M5 is waterproof and dust tight (IP65 and IP68 ratings).
We also have a 13 MP selfie camera on the front, but the M5 increases the megapixel count on the rear camera to 21.5 MP. Both camera sensors are also the Exmor RS, with Hybrid AF on the rear camera. Sony says that the rear camera is capable of 5x Clear Image Zoom (assumed via software tricks) and the sensor has a f/2.2 aperture.
Other known specs:
- Display: 5″ 1080P IPS LCD
- SoC: 64-bit MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core processor at 2.0 GHz
- Memory: 3GB of RAM
- Storage: 16GB on-board, up to 200GB microSD expansion
- Battery: 2,600 mAh

The M5 will come in three flavors: White, black, or gold.
Sony’s decision to differentiate the specs of the C5 Ultra and M5 is strange to me, especially considering that the smaller variant is the more powerful one. Why shouldn’t the C5 Ultra have the better rear camera, better processor, and water/dust-proofing? Were these two phones worked on by different teams that didn’t talk to each other?
Another thought is that this announcement gives us a glimpse on what’s to come from the Xperia Z5. It was rumored that the Z5 would have a 5.5″ display, so what Sony is doing here is lining themselves up to suit users of different screen sizes. The Z5 will be smack in the middle, with the highest-end specs. Most users fall in this 5.5″ sweet spot, while they’re not forgetting about those who want either a smaller or larger device. This is a great move.
Now, let’s just hope Sony doesn’t continue to stray from the U.S. market.

The biggest 3 challenges facing major Android OEM’s
There’s a fair bit of doom and gloom in the smartphone market right now. Samsung just announced its fifth quarterly drop in profits in a row as mobile division profits fell 37.6% compared to last year. HTC is posting a net loss of more $250 million. Sony’s mobile division lost $184 million. Even an apparent success like LG only managed a 1% sales increase in mobile.
You may imagine the difference is being swallowed up by the big Chinese players, but Lenovo’s net profit fell, even as revenue rose. It says that Motorola, acquired from Google last year, is on course to be profitable again by the end of the year or early 2016. Huawei and Xiaomi have increased market share, but it’s not clear how profitable they actually are. We know that Xiaomi’s margins are tight.
What’s the problem here? We just saw a report stating that worldwide smartphone shipments are up 12% year-on-year for Q2 of 2015. Why isn’t everyone making money? There are three major hurdles that are tripping everyone up right now.
Falling prices
This is the statistic that’s hurting everyone the most. We talked about the race to the bottom before, but the fall in prices is extreme. The average selling price (ASP) of an Android smartphone has been dropping every year and it’s lower than ever now. It was $441 back in 2010, and it was just $254 last year. This year it will be lower.
Margins are being squeezed. It’s impossible for manufacturers to make the same profit as before when the ASP is dropping, unless they can find some other way to cut costs. What has actually been happening is that costs have increased, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
How to differentiate
What makes one smartphone stand out over the others? Commoditization has led to a smartphone market where devices are broadly very similar, if not identical. Innovation has slowed to crawl, it may even be sliding backwards. What’s the last major feature that was added to a flagship smartphone that you had never seen before? Biometric security, waterproofing, a heart rate sensor? What we’re mostly seeing now is an incremental improvement on the last model, but in terms of feature set, we’re actually seeing some movement back the way – to reduce features.
The other way that OEMs can get noticed is to spend on marketing, but it’s hugely expensive and it’s difficult to accurately measure the return. It’s also ridiculously easy to get it wrong and blow a chunk of cash on an ineffective campaign. It’s hard not to mention HTC here. A double whammy of terrible advertising and releasing almost the same exact flagship phone as the previous year seems to have hit the company hard.
Most of the major Android OEMs have also been guilty of releasing loads of different models that aren’t all that different. It’s confusing. It may also hurt the brand for someone like Samsung, trying to sell at the high end, if a customer’s first experience is of a budget, entry-level device that’s less than perfect. When they renew and want a better phone, they probably won’t choose Samsung. Is it worth the small profit on a budget device if you lose the customer when they trade up?
Rising costs
The falling ASP would be okay if the cost of making smartphones also kept dropping, but it isn’t. OEMs have been adding features to try and differentiate and it has increased the cost of every handset made. Samsung is the best example here because it kept trying to pack in more and more features. The Galaxy S5 cost $256 to produce. The Galaxy S4 cost $236 to produce. Yet they were sold at the same price.
A few manufacturers have moved to cut costs, or they’ve been forced to ignore certain new features in order to keep costs down. The move to make smartphones tougher, for example, by adding waterproofing, has been reversed by Samsung and ignored by others. Is it possible to make a superphone that’s feature-packed and still turn a healthy profit?

The pace must be impacting here too. Samsung’s Galaxy S3 was able to keep selling for years after release. As the numbers ramped up Samsung will surely have managed to cut the cost of production. If new phones never achieve the numbers then those costs won’t fall, but discounting still has to kick in as a phone ages or nobody will buy it – they’ll just buy one of the latest releases instead.
Why is Apple different?
The WSJ reported on the latest research report from Canaccord Genuity which suggested that Apple took 92% of the total smartphone industry profits last quarter, which is actually down from 93% the quarter before. Samsung took 15% of the profits, and that fact they don’t add up is because many others made a loss. Samsung sold 20 million more smartphones than Apple, and yet made a fraction of the profit.
How is Apple doing it? If you look at our three major challenges, you can see how Apple is bucking every one of them. The ASP of an iPhone right now is $687. It’s heading towards three times the Android ASP. Apple stands out because it has a tiny all-premium range, runs its own exclusive platform, and has a strong brand. The cost of producing an iPhone 6, according to IHS, is around $200, just like the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5 before it.
Not bad for us
There’s something else important that’s worth remembering in all this. What’s good for OEMs isn’t necessarily what’s good for us. We want the best smartphones we can get at the lowest prices we can get them and that’s exactly where Android has been going. But it might not be able to go much further down that road.
There’s still room for premium brands and niche markets with special feature sets. There are still profits being made. But the days of flagships hurtling towards ever more impressive specs and features without a jump in cost are surely numbered.
Sony’s IFA 2015 Press Conference is on September 2nd
Sony may have just announced its ‘super mid-range’ Xperia M5 and gargantuan C5 Ultra smartphones, but that doesn’t mean the Japanese electronics company is anywhere near finished updating its line-up of devices. While we believe that the Xperia Z5 will be unveiled at the IFA in Berlin next month, Sony has confirmed its presence at the trade show via a tweet sent by its Italian subsidiary.

According to the tweet, Sony will be holding a press conference at the IFA on September 2nd to announce ‘many new features.’ It’s thought that besides announcing its latest Xperia Z flagship, that Sony could also unveil a new smartwatch. ‘Super Mid-Range’ Sony Xperia M5 announced
Following its leak last week, Sony has today announced the Xperia M5, the successor to the Xperia M4 Aqua which comes with a more impressive camera. The Xperia M5 has a 5-inch Full HD display, waterproof omnibalance design and a new 21.5MP Hybrid Autofocus camera. Sony is dubbing this handset as a ‘super mid-range’ phone, presumably in a bid to set it between the mid-range and the high-end flagship tiers.
The Xperia M5 key specs include:
- Display: 5.0-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels, ~441 ppi density)
- SoC: 64-bit MediaTek Helio X10, 2.0GHz octa-core processor
- RAM: 3GB
- Storage: 16GB plus microSD expansion slot
- Main Camera: 21.5MP Hybrid autofocus camera, f/2.2 lens

The dual cameras are the key unique features for Sony’s latest mid-range handset and – on paper, at least – they certainly could be, especially compared to other cameras in the mid-range market. The camera reportedly uses a hybrid autofocus system to allow the handset to focus in a quarter of a second and also offers f/2.2 aperture and up to 3200 ISO. The 13MP front camera is what most phones usually have on the back but unlike the Xperia C5 Ultra that it was announced alongside, the Xperia M5 does not have a front selfie flash.

The 64-bit octa-core Helio X10 should deliver in the performance department and is more than worthy of a mid-range handset while Sony claim that the modest 2600 mAh battery will keep the Xperia M5 ticking for two full days, although – as always – this is subjective to your actual usage.
Sony says the Xperia M5 will launch in emerging markets in the next few weeks and has yet to reveal how much it’ll cost and whether it will launch in western markets. On paper, the specs should appeal to most customers and Sony could gain by bringing this to developed markets at a reasonable price tag. The handset will be available in black, white and a blinging gold with actual availability likely to vary by market.

Sony’s IFA conference to take place on September 2nd
Sony may have just released a couple of new mid-range smartphones, but the company still has a few secrets planned for IFA 2015, which will be taking place next month. Sony Italy has confirmed that the company’s press conference at the event will take place on September 2nd.
It is not clear at this stage exactly what Sony has planned for its press conference. Perhaps a new smartwatch and another smartphone are on the cards?

Sony is expected to launch another flagship smartphone this year, which may mark a bigger change up to its Xperia Z flagship line than the Xperia Z4 (Z3+) that launched earlier in the year. But all we really have to go on so far is some third party PR material for an upcoming Bond film and some optimistic words from Sony about the future. We will just have to wait and see what Sony has planned.
There is still a while to go until IFA 2015, but we may begin hearing a few rumors in the build-up to the event. What would you like to see Sony announce?
Sony’s new mid-range phones take 13-megapixel selfies
These are dark days for Sony’s smartphone business. The division saw sales drop 16.3 percent over the past year, and is losing money faster than PlayStation is making it. The answer to this problem, according to Sony, is to release two new mid range smartphones to this month, the Xperia C5 Ultra and the Xperia M5. Both focus heavily on imaging, with the C5 Ultra offering two 13-megapixel Exmor RS cameras (one on the front, one on the back) that will hopefully capture some impressive shots. The front-facing camera has a 22m wide-angle lens for all your #welfie needs, and even a front-facing flash. Cameras aside, the C5 Ultra (pictured above) has a 1.7GHz octa-core processor, a 6-inch 1080p display, and a 2,930mAh battery that Sony claims is good for two days use.
The Sony Xperia M5.
The M5 is likely to be the snappier of the two, with a 2GHz MediaTek X10 processor paired with 3GB of RAM, a 5-inch 1080p display, and IP65/68 water- and dust-resistance. It bumps the main camera up to a 21.5-megapixel Exmoor RS sensor capable of shooting 4K video, and has the same 13-megapixel sensor at the front. Its 2,600mAh battery is apparently good for the same two days use as the C5 Ultra.
Both phones will run Android 5.0 Lollipop and include a microSD slot for expanded storage. They’ll be available later this month in various markets around the world, but pricing has yet to be announced. If this is all Sony has to offer this year, it’s unlikely to do much to reverse its fortunes. The IFA trade show just around the corner, though, and it’s historically a launchpad for Sony’s new mobiles and tablets. so we may see something more impressive from the company before the month is out.

Xperia C5 Ultra offers two 13MP cameras and a “near borderless” 6-inch display
Sony is doubling down on the selfie phone concept with the massive Xperia C5 Ultra, featuring 13MP cameras on the front and back.
The Xperia C5 Ultra is the bigger, badder successor of the Xperia C4, which Sony introduced just three months ago. While the C4 featured a rather unremarkable 5MP sensor for the front camera, the C5 Ultra upgrades to 13MP, which is what many high-end smartphones offer on the rear.
The other highlight feature of the Xperia C5 Ultra is the massive 6-inch Full HD IPS LCD display. Sony is jumping on the “bezel-less” bandwagon, and the result is pretty striking. With a 6-inch panel though, and sizeable bezels on the top and bottom, the C5 Ultra is very large: for reference, at 164.2 mm, it’s taller than the Nexus 6 and even the iPhone 6 Plus (with the benefit of a larger screen, of course). The device is 8.2 mm thick and weighs 187 grams.
Processing duties are handled by an octa-core MediaTek MTK6752 clocked at 1.7 GHz (Mali760 MP2 GPU), with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, expandable via microSD. The battery is a very decent 2,930-mAh unit, but though truth be told, a little extra capacity would have been nice given the oversized profile of the phone. Still, Sony promises “up to two-day battery life.”
Back to the cameras, the rear unit features a 13MP Sony Exmor RS sensor, with a 25mm 85° wide-angle lens, and HDR for photos and videos. The Xperia C5 Ultra integrates many of Sony’s proprietary technologies, including in the display area (Bravia Engine 2, Super Vivid Mode), sound (Clear Bass, xLOUD) and battery (Stamina mode). Overall, the C5 Ultra should be a capable media-centric device, and the front camera capabilities will make it stand out in the crowd.
The Xperia C5 Ultra will be offered in black, white, and mint starting with mid-August in “select emerging markets.” Actual price and availability by market will be announced at a later date.

Sony’s C5 Ultra has been to subject of a few leaks in recent times, and now the MediaTek powered device with super-thin bezels and twin 13MP cameras (front and rear) has been officially outed. We have more images and specifications after the break.
I mentioned that the C5 Ultra has super-thin bezels, and there’s a reason; it’s sporting a large 6-inch display with full HD resolution. While it isn’t running on the latest silicon, Sony claims that the C5 Ultra will last 2 days, and play 8 hours worth of video before giving up the ghost. Let’s have a look at what else the C5 Ultra has to offer.

While the C5 Ultra is a little taller (+-5mm) than the Nexus 6 that also features a 6-inch display, it is 3mm narrower and 2mm thinner. Make no mistake about it, though, the C5 Ultra is still a big phone, despite those super-thin bezels. What it does have is a whopping 13MP front camera with a wide-angle lens for taking those selfies.
