Xperia Z5 promo images posted online, further confirms 23-megapixel camera
A series of promotional photos was accidentally posted to Sony’s various social media avenues, and Xperia Blog seems to have gotten their hands on them all. Sony teased its upcoming rumored Xperia Z5 earlier this week, and these new photos are getting us excited as to what’s to come.
The images don’t show anything on the specs side, but they do show how gorgeous this upcoming smartphone is. From the photos, it looks the device could come in gold, white, and a turquoise color.
Past rumors have indicated that the Xperia Z5 will sport a 23-megapixel Exmor RS camera with six-element lens. It’s also said that this particular device will come in many variants, as is the norm for many of Sony’s devices.
We’ll find out what Sony’s next flagship is all about next week. Are you looking forward to the new Xperia Z5?

Xperia Z5 press renders leaked, 23-megapixel camera on-board

Sony fans eager for some new news with on the upcoming Xperia Z5 will be pleased to know that a new set of leaks has dripped from the faucet. This time, the offerings are literally of an official nature, despite the fact the phone itself is still on the DL. According to Xperia Blog, Sony Mobile made a bit of a snafu earlier today when it posted a series of images seemingly set for press purposes.
The highlight for all those camera aficionados out there, is that it now seems all but officially confirmed by Sony that the Z5 will feature an impressive 23-megapixel rear shooter. Take a look:

The prospect of an improved camera will no doubt be a major boon to all those who were disappointed with the Xperia Z4/Z3+, which actually made use of the same one found in last year’s Xperia Z3. Given the stunning images that photographers -both amateur and professional alike- have been able to take with the existing unit, the potential for an even better one will no doubt make the wait for next week’s IFA 2015, where the device is allegedly going to launch, all the more difficult.
At the same time however, those hoping for some semblance of a new design might be left out in the cold:

The device, as pictured above, looks remarkably similar to those that came before it. The phone still retains the same rectangular shape Sony has used since its origin, though again with the newer rounded edges. Ports can also be seen along the bottom end of the device, sans flap, which looks like the smartphone will once again achieve its waterproofing primarily through sealing them rather than covering.
Indeed it looks to match up perfectly with the leaked images that had been circulating the internet:

As can be found in the above image, though not visible from today’s cache, the Xperia Z5 is expected to have a fingerprint sensor built into the power button. The button, in turn, will now be flat as opposed to the circular protrusion that had graced the previous models in the series.
It’s that time again
Given that Xperia Z4/Z3+ is only a few months old, and Verizon’s variant hasn’t even released yet, the idea of another Xperia flagship hitting the pavement might be a bit much to take in, though presumably many opted to skip the latest iteration in favor of whatever this one might bring. Clearly the wait for a new design appears to require some additional patience.
In terms of specs, the rumors are all over the place. Some have actually suggested the Z5 will feature a 4K display, a claim that seems without any merit whatsoever. The General Manager of Sony Mobile Taiwan was literally quoted, stating there were no plans to release even a QHD smartphone panel. Even the Verizon-altered Z4v is just the first smartphone in the OEM’s entire history to make use of QHD. To imagine a bump up to 4K would seemingly be defiant of the very product that would allegedly have it.
Given that the Snapdragon 820 is not yet ready, it’s possible the Z5 could once again go with the 810, or else step down to the 808 like LG did with the G4. Other rumors also indicate it will have 3GB or 4GB of RAM and an 8-megapixel front camera, along with 4K upscaling software and a seemingly impossible 4500mAh battery.
Ultimately we need to wait until next week to see if the phone will be officially unveiled or not, but things are definitely looking like a photo finish to be sure! The real question though: is this the phone Made for Bond?
HTC Vive won’t ship until Q1 2016
The HTC Vive is the lovechild of phone maker HTC and gaming giant Valve that aims to bring VR into the home in an affordable and easy to use way. Many have tapped it as one of the most promising upcoming offerings in the growing VR space which includes well known names like Oculus. Unfortunately it looks like most people won’t be able to get their hands on the Vive until Q1 2016. Today at PAX Prime expo, Valve released a statement saying that “HTC will offer the first commercial Vive units via a limited quantity of community and developer systems” later this year, “with larger quantities shipping in calendar Q1 2016.”
Announced in March, developer units have been around since May and it’s disappointing that we won’t see mass shipment of units this year but if HTC and Valve need the extra time to get it right, then that’s exactly what they should do. VR is something that can be incredibly powerful but hasn’t taken off yet due to no-one really getting it right. We’ve seen a lot of promising new technologies recently either take longer to get off the ground or never get there at all due to a premature launch.
Pushing back the release until Q1 2016 will mean that the Vive will release about the same time as the Oculus (Q1 2016) and Sony’s Project Morpheus (first half of 2016). It will be interesting to see who can take hold of the market.
Who do you think has the most promising offering? The Vive from HTC and Valve, the Facebook backed Oculus or Sony’s Project Morpheus? Let us know in the comments who you’re keeping your eye on.

Sony Xperia Z5 press images leak out ahead of IFA announcement
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Sony‘s never been particularly good at keeping secrets, and the latest leak consisting of Sony Xperia Z5 press images just reiterates that. While there’s very little to show in the images themselves, we can see from the content that Sony is trying to show off two key features – waterproofing, which the Xperia line has had as long as anyone cares to remember, and the new camera sensor that will give the Xperia Z5 hybrid autofocus. How well this autofocus actually works is another question entirely, but it’s clear that Sony wants to make it a selling point. Check out all the leaked images below:
In terms of design, we’re probably looking at a device that hasn’t deviated from that of the Xperia Z4 very much, if at all – that seems to be Sony’s style nowadays – so we’ll have to see if they have something up their sleeve that we haven’t heard about yet. We won’t have long to wait as Sony will be holding a press conference at IFA 2015 in Berlin and we’re 99% certain that the Xperia Z5 will be headlining the event.
What do you think about these Sony Xperia Z5 press images?

Sony isn’t intentionally keeping ‘Until Dawn’ off of Twitch

Right now, there’s a bit of an issue going on with Twitch and the PlayStation 4’s horror-movie-director simulator, Until Dawn. Yesterday the Twitch Support Twitter account posted that if you were using PS4’s built-in Twitch sharing functionality that Sony had disabled archiving. Based on the response we got from Sony, it doesn’t seem like it was for a nefarious reason or anything, mostly just forgetting to flip a switch.
Using PS4 Share to broadcast “Until Dawn”? The publisher has disabled archiving for this game. We’re reaching out to hopefully enable. ^JM
— Twitch Support (@TwitchSupport) August 26, 2015
We are currently working on a fix that will enable archiving of Until Dawn Twitch streams as this feature was unintentionally disabled. We are humbled by the community reception of the game and are excited to see fans sharing experiences on Twitch and YouTube. We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide an update as soon as the issue has been resolved.
So there you have it, folks: just be patient. In the meantime you could always watch our archived stream just below.

Only Sony could make this TV remote and speaker hybrid
We love Sony’s penchant for crazy products like the P clamshell Android tablet, and who can forget the Rolly music player slash robotic, LED flashing… thing? Judging by a new speaker, the company still has a whimsical side despite falling profits. The SRS-LSR100 pairs a TV remote with a wireless speaker, which receives a 2.4GHz signal from dongle attached to your TV or stereo. The idea is to bring the TV sound closer to you, whether you’re in the living room, exercise room or kitchen. And since you’re there, why not have a channel-changer?
Features include a headphone jack, large volume knob, auto power-off, drip resistance, minimal sound delay and 16-hours of battery life. Sony’s marketing it as an easy way to hear TV when you’re exercising, cooking poutine, or doing other noisy activities. It’s also “useful when it is difficult to hear in conjunction with the family,” according to the translated Japanese PR. In other words, when Grandpa tells you to shut up during his favorite program, you can just shove the speaker closer or hand him some headphones. Which actually sounds pretty useful — unfortunately, it’s only coming to Japan (next month) for 19,880 yen ($170).

ICYMI: Firework autocannon, Sony drone, and manga noodle bots
![]()
Today on In Case You Missed It, we showcase a double-barreled fireworks cannon that’s just slightly less dangerous than that personal flamethrower you’ve had your eye on. We’ve also got Sony’s first drone prototype — it’s a little remote controlled Harrier! And if you thought that explainer video from Snapchat’s CEO was terrible, just wait until you see this Alienware unboxing. Finally, an enterprising noodle shop owner in China got his hands on a refurbished Ultraman assembly robot and converted it into, what else, an automated noodle slicer.
If you come across any interesting videos, we’d love to see them. Just tweet us with the #ICYMI hashtag @engadget or @mskerryd. And if you just want to heap praise on your handsome guest host, feel free to hit him up @mr_trout.

Sony’s next phone is yet another rectangular slab
If you were hoping for a radical change in Sony’s Xperia formula, bad news — it looks like the company is sticking with its blocky “Omnibalance” design for now. A tweet from Sony UK is teasing a new smartphone that will be unveiled on September 2nd, immediately before the IFA trade show. It shows a blurry handset capturing a photo, with the tagline “a smartphone with greater focus” underneath. The combination would suggest an upgraded camera, although it’s possible the message is also hinting at the new, stripped back Android skin it’s been testing recently. Regardless, we’re expecting this to be either the Xperia Z5 or Z5 Compact — perhaps both, if Sony mimics last year’s reveal. The photo might be a little blurry, but it’s obvious Sony is preparing another rectangular slab. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but given the Xperia Z4/Z3+ is only a few months old, we’re hoping Sony has made some changes elsewhere to make this model a worthy upgrade.

Sony teases greater smartphone camera focus abilities for IFA

A few unofficial teasers and leaks regarding some upcoming smartphones from Sony have been gradually trickling out over the past couple of weeks, but now we have an official teaser from Sony Xperia GB. The tweet is all about some new camera technology, which the company appears to have planned for a new smartphone release taking place at IFA on September 2nd.

All of the references to cameras and focusing leads me to believe that the upcoming handset will likely make use of Sony’s latest Exmor RS IMX230 or IMX240 image sensor. The IMX230 features 21 megapixels, which is typical for Sony’s flagship devices, along with 192 point phase detection autofocus technology (PDAF), for faster and more accurate object focusing. Sony unveiled its PDAF and traditional contrast hybrid auto-focus technology with the launch of the Xperia M5 less than one month ago, which may also feature in this new handset.
Unfortunately, we can’t really see the phone because of the blur in the image, but the design looks the same as the company’s existing Xperia series, although the size perhaps suggests that a Compact variant is on the way. Last week, a press shot of the Xperia Z5 Compact leaked online and pictures from earlier in the month hint that an entire Xperia Z5 range might be on the way.
We don’t have too many other specification rumors to go on at this point. One or more of Sony’s upcoming devices may be making use of Sony’s 4K X-Reality display software and a fingerprint scanner is also said to be included.
The teaser leaves us with a date set for September 2nd, meaning that there’s a little over a week left to wait until we see what Sony has to offer.
