Sony is crowdfunding a smart watch with a dumb face
For the better part of a year, Sony has encouraged employees to come forward with their own projects and showcase them via its First Flight crowdfunding platform. Early ideas have included an e-paper watch, a smart remote and a DIY smart project maker, but limited interest in them means they’ll likely never see the mass market. Sony’s latest project, however, has a lot more potential. It’s called the Wena Wrist and it’s a stylish watch that earns its smart credentials by packing technology into the strap.
Inside the Wena (which is short for “wear electronics naturally”) band lies an NFC chip that supports the Japanese FeliCa standard and lets wearers enjoy contactless payments, hop on public transport and even use it as a student ID card. It also features a seven-color LED for notifications, vibration alerts, fitness tracking and is water resistant down to around 30 meters.

Sony drafted in help from Japanese watchmaker Citizen for the body. As the Wena includes a 22mm strap, it’s technically possible that the band will fit any watch that matches its dimensions. Instead of having to upgrade a complete smartwatch when it becomes dated, Sony wants to see if consumers will modernize a stylish timepiece by simply upgrading its tech-laden strap.
The Wena will come in two styles, the $287 Three Hands and $576 Chronograph, and will only work with one brand of phone. No, not Sony; Apple. Specifically, devices running iOS 8 and above, at least for now. The band will last roughly a week between charges, but the Three Hands and Chronograph batteries will give you three and five years usage respectively. Sony hopes to raise 10 million yen ($82,450) via its crowdfunding portal and says it will begin shipping the Wena in March 2016.

Sony spokesman says the Xperia Z5 ‘Premium’ has a 4K screen
Sony’s incoming Xperia Z5 flagship will be the first smartphone with a 4K screen, according to a leaked video from Clubic.com. In it, Sony’s marketing director says the company will release both a 5.2-inch Z5 and 5.5-inch Z5 ‘Premium,’ and the video (below) is focused on the larger model. On top of the 4K screen (which yields over 800 pixels per inch), the device also packs a 23-megapixel camera with a 0.03 second autofocus and 5X digital zoom, confirming a previous leak. The new flagship will be just as waterproof and dustproof as the Xperia Z3+ model, but with an interesting twist — the micro-USB connector is waterproof, even without a cover.
The all-metal phone retains Sony’s boxy design language to a ‘T,’ though it now has the Xperia logo engraved into the side for a more premium look. The Z5 will also be Sony’s first phone with a fingerprint sensor, which is mounted in an unusual spot: the tiny side power button. As for the rest of the specs, previous rumors had both of the new Z5s equipped with Snapdragon 810 SoCs, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory. (Unlike it’s bigger brother, the 5.2-inch Z5 is said to have a 1080p screen.) Given the nature of the video, we wouldn’t treat this info as gospel just yet. However, Sony will reveal all at IFA in Berlin later this week.
[Thanks, Max!]

It’s happening: Xperia Z5 Premium with 4K screen demoed on video
A series of hands-on images and specs about Sony’s upcoming trio of smartphones – Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, and Z5 Premium – leaked yesterday, and now what appears to be the original source of the info has surfaced.
A video from French website Clubic shows a hands-on demo of the Xperia Z5 Premium and Xperia Z5, conducted by a marketing executive of Sony France. It appears that the video of the pre-briefing was published accidentally ahead of the expected launch of the devices on Wednesday – the version embedded above was somehow bootlegged and reuploaded on YouTube.
The most interesting aspect of the French-language video is the apparent confirmation of the 4K display for the Xperia Z5 Premium. Despite our strong reservations, it appears that Sony is indeed pushing the envelope of display technology with a 4K resolution on a 5.5-inch LCD panel. The Sony representative leaves no room for interpretation, calling the device “world’s first 4K smartphone.” That confirms the faint rumblings we’ve been hearing over the past weeks about a 4K version of the Xperia Z5 coming along the regular 5.2-inch Full HD model.

Other specs of the three Sony devices that the video confirms are a Snapdragon 810 processor, side-mounted fingerprint sensor, battery life of up to two days, water and dust resistance (no flap for USB port), and a 23MP camera with 0.03-second autofocus. It looks like these specs will be shared across the range. The Xperia Z5 Compact is expected to feature a 4.6-inch HD display.

This video seems very solid, as leaks go, but we’ll still urge you to wait for the official announcement before reacting, one way or another. That said – 4K on a phone, how crazy is that?
Sony Xperia Z5 leaks on video ahead of impending announcement
We’ve already seen the Xperia Z5 promo images appear ahead of IFA 2015 where the device is expected to be officially announced, and now a video from a French site Clubic has leaked showing the Xperia Z5 in a lot more detail.
There will apparently be three phones that make up the Xperia Z5 announcement – Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact and Xperia Z5 Premium. The main differences between the devices will be the screen resolution. The video suggests that the higher-end Z5 premium will have a 5.5-inch 4K LCD at over 800 pixels-per-inch at 3840 x 2160. The regular Z5 will be 5.2-inches, whilst the Compact is 4.6-inches.
All three devices will be pretty similar in the rest of the specs and will share a fingerprint sensor on the power button, as well as a 23-Megapixel camera, two days of battery life, and a Snapdragon 810.
We’ll know for sure what Sony have up their sleeve when it comes to the Xperia Z5 in a few days at IFA 2015.

Sony Xperia Z5 surfaces in video
Spoiler alert! A video has surfaced on the web and revealed the upcoming Sony Xperia Z5 in its full glory. Sony plans to hold its press event this Wednesday at IFA 2015. We are expecting to see multiple variants of the Z5 announced including premium and compact versions.
The Sony Xperia Z5 premium will be the successor to the Xperia Z4 or Z3+ depending on where you live. The flagship will include a 5.5-inch display with a rumored 4k resolution. We’re also expecting to see a bump in the camera department up to 23MP for the rear-facing, as well as a better selfie cam. It will likely offer the same water and dust proofing capabilities and will have some serious power under the hood. We’re talking about the Snapdragon 810 SoC, the Adreno 430 GPU and either 3 or 4GB of RAM. Hopefully Sony will take care of the heating issues with the Snapdragon 810. We’ll let you know all the details as they arrive on Wednesday, but for now, check out the embed video below for a close up look at the upcoming flagship.

Video of the Sony Xperia Z5 family leaks out
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
It turns out that the photo that we posted up yesterday was actually from a 3-minute video of the Sony Xperia Z5 family that was released early and basically gives a tour of the new Sony Xperia Z5 and the Xperia Z5 Premium. The only problem – the video is completely in French. Despite this, we can see the user interface for both devices as well as confirming the 23MP camera that we’ve known about for some time now. Check out the video for yourself:
As was hinted yesterday, Sony is expected to announce three new devices at IFA 2015 this week: the Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium. It’s quite a formidable range of devices, and we’ll have to see if Sony is able to capitalize on its diverse range this time around.

Rumor: Sony to unveil an Xperia Z5 Premium in addition to the Z5 and Z5 Compact?
One of the prematurely posted press shots Sony accidentally posted of the Z5.
In the past few weeks, the Xperia Z5 flagship has been the subject of some very legitimate looking leaks. This past week in particular Sony itself allegedly goofed and posted some press shots before they were subsequently pulled. Not one to be overlooked, the smaller sibling, the Xperia Z5 Compact, has also been touched upon. Still, for some time now rumors have circulated that a truly premium model would be coming down the pipeline eventually. Now, perhaps, we have a better idea of just what is in store.
While Android Authority can not confirm the legitimacy of this new information, a tipster over at PhoneArena has provided some potentially sizzling new details regarding Sony’s alleged plans for IFA this coming week: there will be three devices unveiled on Wednesday.
The Xperia Z5: The device will make use of a 5.2-inch Full HD (1080 X 1920) display.
The Xperia Z5 Compact: This device will have a 4.6-inch Standard HD (720 X 1280) display.
The Xperia Z5 Premium: This device will have a larger 5.5-inch, QHD (1440 X 2560) display.
According to the tipster, Sony has selected a 2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 Octa-core SoC with Adreno 430 GPU. There will be 3GB of RAM on-board and 32GB of internal storage. They will include a 23-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front camera. The phones will all include an integrated fingerprint sensor built into the now flat power button on the right side of the phone.
The report also reiterates the fact that the volume rocker has been moved down to the bottom portion of the device’s right side, and also specifically mentioned that the Z5 Premium would be able to record 4K video with its’ rear camera. (It is likely that all three models will include the feature however, especially given that even the current Z4/Z3+ already does it).
Finally, the following picture was supplied along with the tip:
Three Z5 devices?
While it’s important to take this entire report with a healthy dose of sodium (possibly iodized), the strategy would make major sense for Sony if it pans out. Last year’s Xperia Z3 Compact was very well received given that it broke ties with the disappointing trend of smaller devices using even smaller specs.
The Xperia Z5 Premium also makes a lot of sense: Sony doesn’t have a phablet-sized flagship, and hasn’t for some time now. This is one major area where competitors like Samsung have a major advantage over it, and indeed given the fantastic camera set up that Sony uses on the Z-line, many larger screen aficionados have been lamenting the lack of choice.
The Xperia Z5 Compact was leaked earlier this month.
Opting for a QHD panel on the Z5 Premium also makes a lot of sense. For one thing, it strengthens the ability to compete with rivals like the Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5/Galaxy S6 Edge+ and LG’s G4. At the same time however, it gives further legitimacy to a device that would obviously need some other critical point to differentiate itself from the standard sized product. This latter point is all the more pressing given that Verizon Wireless is posed to release the Xperia Z4v, which does in fact, include a QHD panel.
Stand up for Sony
Assuming this report of an Xperia Z5 Premium is the real deal, Sony may truly be able to deal some major damage against its OEM rivals this fall. The camera, the screen sharpness, the waterproofing, the microSD support, and now the fingerprint sensor will make for a very attractive package to any customer shopping for a phablet. Moreover, it will also be a great find for anyone who is still reeling over Samsung’s decision to drop some staples.
The question then, will truly be just how well Sony can push and promote this terrific trio. Outside of Japan, the Xperia brand’s market share is relatively low when compared to other legacy OEMs. Part of this is, and has been, due to what many argue is a total lack of marketing push from Sony, in addition to poor decisions like carrier exclusivity.
The Xperia Z5 is allegedly going to include a fingerprint sensor built into the power button.
Given that the CEO of Sony Mobile was extremely optimistic when interviewed earlier this summer, this could very well be a golden opportunity for the Japanese giant to make major in-roads in its’ push to regain dominance in the consumer electronics market.
Suffice to say, there will definitely be some major attention paid to whatever products are formally announced this Wednesday. Hopefully, the Xperia Z5 Premium will be one of them.
What do you think? Would a phablet-sized Xperia Z5 be a major candidate for your hard earned money? Is the larger screen size and resolution-bump enough to justify the name “Premium” or would it need a new build to boot? Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below!

Yet another photo of the Sony Xperia Z5 leaks out, suggests three devices to be announced this week
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
We’ve seen quite a lot of the Sony Xperia Z5 lately – just a few days ago a number of press images leaked out emphasizing some of the Xperia Z5’s features. Today, a new photo of the Sony Xperia Z5 has surfaced, showing us a side view of the device and giving us a clearer look at the fingerprint scanner that is rumoured to be combined with the device’s power button on the side of the device. Check out the image in question below:
That’s not all that this report has to say, however, as it also claims that Sony will be announcing three new devices at IFA 2015 this week. The three devices will include:
- Sony Xperia Z5 – 5.2-inch 1080p
- Sony Xperia Z5 Compact – 4.6-inch 720p
- Sony Xperia Z5 Premium – 5.5-inch 1440p
That’s quite an intriguing lineup for Sony as it covers all the major size offerings that other manufacturers have, which is hopefully enough to help the mobile division become profitable again. There is also the lingering rumour of a Sony Xperia Z5 Ultra, expected to be a device larger than 6-inches, which appears to be giving IFA 2015 a miss.
What do you think about Sony releasing three variants at IFA 2015? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Xperia Z5 promo images appear ahead of IFA 2015
With IFA 2015 just around the corner, we’ve already seen several leaks regarding phones and hardware. Now it’s the Sony Xperia’s Z4 turn at that, with what appears to be several promotional snaps.
The pictures match the leaks we have already seen this far and confirm that the next Xperia flagship will have a 1/2.3-inch 23MP Exmor RS camera with six-lens system. It’s also evident they have stuck with their OmniBalance design that they’ve used on past phones. Have a look:
Following declining sales, Sony best better offer the best they can and put their best foot forward. Can the Z5 compete in the market?
