International variant of the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is now up for purchase in the U.S. on Amazon
Consumers in the United States can now get their hands on an international variant of Sony’s latest Xperia Z5 Premium.
For the first time, consumers in the United States can purchase the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium thanks to Amazon. However, just remember that since it’s an international variant it fails to include a valid U.S. warranty. If this isn’t enough to stop you, make sure the device has the proper bands for your carrier prior to buying. The handset should work on all GSM carriers such as T-Mobile, AT&T and others.
Consumers can purchase either the dual-SIM model or the single-SIM variant from Amazon. Depending on the model and choice of color, the price will vary. But either way you go, it’ll cost you a pretty penny.

Sony CEO shoots down rumors regarding sale of their mobile business, in-house chipset

Last month, Sony CEO Kazou Hirai talked about the company’s willingness to “consider alternative options” if their mobile business didn’t see profit in 2016. Some interested parties read into this somewhat vague statement that Sony was considering selling their mobile business entirely. In an interview this week, the CEO affirmed that Sony has no intention of making such a sale, and he also put rumors to rest regarding the possibility of Sony making their own chipset in-house.

Speculations that Sony would be entering the chip market have their origins in an article from Digitimes, which noted that such a maneuver by Sony would let the Tokyo tech titan snag a piece of the market currently competed for by Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Spreadtrum Communications. Since Sony kind of has a tendency to keep their projects under wraps, the idea that such a complex venture might be under way really wasn’t that much of a stretch.
Kazuro Hirai put the kibosh on these rumors in a interview this week in China. He denied any alleged plans for Sony chipsets, and in regards to the idea that the mobile division of the company may be up for sale in the next two years, the CEO stuck with the statements made by Sony back in July that Sony Mobile “will never ever sell or exit from the current mobile business.”
Whatever “alternative options” the company is considering will have to be pretty revolutionary. Sony has been struggling for almost the last decade, with previously lucrative markets like their television sales getting undercut by Korean competitors. Their mobile division has had an especially rocky time, and the company as a whole has already undergone multiple restructurings and cutbacks.
The plan that Kazuro Hirai identified in the interview included further restructuring, with trims to production costs increasing profits and an expanding line of products garnering more sales.

This is Sony’s Concept for Marshmallow, and it’s very promissing
When it comes to Android UI, OEMs take their own approach, and for Sony, its interface hasn’t seemed as polished as some of its rival OEMs. However, the company is using its Concept for Marshmallow program as an opportunity to learn from customer feedback. After a few days with the update, is Sony’s interface about to get the major overhaul it needs?
Sony’s hardware is definitely premium but its software has been somewhat lacklustre, with elements such as Small Apps still present despite a lack of positive user feedback. Sony’s interface has traditionally been quite slow, but one thing you’ll immediately notice about is just how fast and fluid Sony’s Marshmallow update is.

Prior to Marshmallow, Sony adopted a similar approach to some of its rivals by customising large parts of the Android experience, but this resulted in a sluggish experience. With its Marshmallow update, Sony has adopted the “less is more” approach, and, like Motorola, it is running an almost-stock version of Marshmallow with just a few small Sony changes and tweaks.
The first thing you’ll notice is the Sony launcher, which looks similar to previous versions but has been improved to make it faster. The launcher comes with two options: the classic Android home screen and a ‘modern’ interface with all of your apps on the home screen. Alongside the launcher, Sony has also tweaked the settings app to include more options than present on stock Android and the changes are certainly welcome.

As you might have expected based on past handsets, Sony has replaced the stock Gallery and Music Player apps with its own Album and Music applications. Both applications are essentially basic in features, but it’s worth remembering that this is concept software and we’re likely to see further enhancements to both apps before release.
Sony’s other additions to the OS include its Xperia Care application, which provides quick access to support topics and warranty information, as well as helping you customise your smartphone. The camera app has also been replaced with one of Sony’s own making, and, a key change is the speed of the app, with photos now capturing and loading much faster. There are also fewer camera apps preinstalled, and the options are minimal, packaged inside a sleek and relatively easy-to-use camera experience.

Sony has become synonymous with being slow with updates for its smartphones, but if the Concept for Marshmallow is anything to go by, this will hopefully be fixed going forward. In the past week, there have been 7 updates including two inside three hours. While it’s worth remembering updates are likely to be less frequent with the final release, it’s still reassuring to see Sony can roll out updates frequently.
What do you take away from Sony’s Concept for Marshmallow project? It’s really simple – Sony is finally fixing its software and if the final product is as quick as this beta, Sony may yet find its smartphone division regain profitability. The Concept for Marshmallow project is a vision of a new Sony and this is how all Sony smartphones should be – fast, fluid and no silly preloaded apps, just a clean experience with a few small additions to the stock OS.

Sony’s adding PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility to the PS4
Revisiting PlayStation 2 games (at this point) might cost more than you expect. Sony and Electronic Arts have a Star Wars: Battlefront PlayStation 4 bundle available right now and with it comes a quartet of games from a long time ago and a galaxy far, far away: Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars Racer: Revenge and Super Star Wars are available via a single download code. This news comes by way of the tech-minded folks over at Digital Foundry who say that of the PS2-era games (all but the latter), they’re running via emulation. The evidence is in the details here, as DF says that the sophomore console’s select and start buttons have been mapped to either side of the DualShock 4’s touchpad, which, considering these were made by Lucasarts Interactive and not Sony, wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

Adorable, grisly adventure game ‘Jenny LeClue’ hits PS4 in 2016
Jenny LeClue is a coming-of-age story wrapped in a choose-your-own-adventure novel and tied up with the pixelated ribbon of a point-and-click detective game. And it’s coming to PlayStation 4 next year, creator Joe Russ announced on the PlayStation Blog today. We’ve been keeping an eye on this one since its $105,800 Kickstarter in 2014 — it’s poised to be a witty and charming investigation game starring a pugnacious young woman, Jenny LeClue, on a mission to prove her mother is innocent of murder. However, Jenny is fictional even within the game, where she’s the star of a series of (also fictional) choose-your-own-adventure novels. As Jenny hunts down evidence and discovers secrets in her sleepy, creepy town, her author narrates, and the two characters play off of each other in often-humorous ways.

Cyberpunk noir game ‘Read Only Memories’ heads to PS4 and Vita
Read Only Memories, a pixelated adventure game set in the futuristic city of Neo-San Fransisco, will make its way to PlayStation 4 and Vita “soon,” developer Midboss announced in a new trailer. Midboss is composed of the folks behind the annual GaymerX convention, and Read Only Memories is a narrative-driven, sci-fi romp set in 2064 that happens to include an array of inclusive character options, such as the ability to choose your preferred gender pronoun. However, these options are almost a side-note to the game’s emphasis on story, retro 2D gameplay and robust character interactions.

‘Gravity Rush Remastered’ launch date shifts up a week in Europe
Sony is doing the fine people of Europe a solid and pushing up the release date of Gravity Rush Remastered from February 10th to February 2nd. This is the new-and-improved, PlayStation 4 version of Gravity Rush, originally a (truly incredible) Vita game. Gravity Rush Remastered includes updated graphics, motion-sensing controls, and extra missions, costumes and challenges. The game is due to hit PS4 on February 9th in the US, in both digital and physical forms. A sequel, cleverly called Gravity Rush 2, is also on its way to PS4 — and PS4 only, with no Vita version in sight.
