Sony joins Samsung and LG with its first curved 4K TVs
Sony’s just announced its first large, curved 4K HDTVs, but is doing things a bit differently from its competitors. The new 65- and 75-inch S90 models have less curve than Samsung or LG’s offerings, because Sony says that gives better viewing angles and a more immersive experience. Otherwise, they’re packed with the kind of tech you’d expect: an UltraHD Triluminos display with “X-tended dynamic range” for better blacks, active 3D, advanced 4K-to-HD upscaling and angled speakers and subwoofers with 4.2 surround sound. Sony’s also baked in social viewing, live football mode for instant tweeting and photo sharing. There’s still no pricing, but Samsung’s curved 65-inch 4K model is $5,000, and its 78-inch model is $8,000 — despite Sony’s smaller curve, we’d expect at least that.

Sony has officially confirmed it will no longer support the PlayStation Mobile for Android endeavor. Designed to bridge the game between PS Vita and Android gaming, the certification process will still run for devices powered by Android 4.4.2 and older. Anything newer, however, and Sony is not making any guarantees for quality of experience or… Read more »

Sony is getting out of the e-reader business
Sony announced the closure of its own Reader store in favor of Kobo’s platform earlier this year, and now it seems the company is nixing e-readers entirely. BBC reports that the Japanese outfit doesn’t plan to release another device with last year’s PRS-T3 serving as the most recent option. Thanks to Amazon’s Kindle lineup and a growing number of tablet options, dedicated reading slates have seen declining sales since 2011.

Sony Xperia Z3 is heading to T-Mobile

The Sony Xperia Z3 has experienced some pretty serious leaks recently, and even though it’s not actually released yet we have a pretty good idea of what to expect, but up until now had little indication of the carrier that would feature it. Sony’s new Action Cam arrives stateside with SteadyShot and more for $200
Sony’s stable of action cams just got a new option for thrill seekers in the US. The HDR-AS20 joins the outfit’s HDR-AS100V and HDR-AS30V in capturing daring feats of whatever you fancy. This new model packs the company’s SteadyShot image stabilization tech, Zeiss Tessar lens and 170-degree wide-angle views. As you might expect, built-in WiFi allows for control via iOS or Android device in additon to Sony’s own live-view remote. In terms of detailed specs, there’s a 16.8-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor capable of 1080/60p, 1080/30p and 720/30p footage and 11.9-megapixel stills. The usual USB, HDMI and microphone jacks are included, along with an on-board memory card slot for storage. As with previous releases, a waterproof case outfits the HDR-AS20 for expeditions at sea and a smattering of mounts can position the unit for the best footage — up to 130 minutes between charges. Looking to take the plunge? $200 allows you to do just that when the compact gadget hits shelves in August.

Sony makes money on movies and games, but not on smartphones
It wasn’t long ago that Sony, almost inexplicably for a company of its size and heritage, was losing money everywhere it went. After a few years of pain, however, things have begun to look up, with the company posting a first quarter net profit of around $265 million. The bulk of the good news comes from the PlayStation 4 and Sony Pictures, the company’s film and TV arm that benefited from the successes of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 22 Jump Street. The only sore point on the company’s financials is that its mobile division continued to see sales of Xperia handsets drop — a loss that even managed to offset a favorable bump in the exchange rate. The corporation is still predicting that it’ll eat around $487 million in losses across the year, so don’t be surprised if someone greenlights 23 Jump Street in the next couple of weeks.

Sony explains what ‘s in the PlayStation Now open beta for PS4
Sony’s had limited tests of its cloud-based gaming service running for the last few months, but it’s taking PlayStation Now to the next level tomorrow by letting anyone with a PS4 (that’s in the continental US or southern Canada) join in. There’s a new blog post and video up now telling gamers what to expect: PS3 games, cloud saves, trophies, and “a variety of rental periods” depending on the game. As far as an all-you-can-eat option following the lead of Netflix or EA’s just-announced EA Access — that Sony doesn’t think you need — Sony reaffirmed that it’s working on a subscription option for PS Now, but didn’t provide any more details. As for how much it costs now, there will be four-hour rentals for $2, as well as 7-, 30- and 90-day options for between $3 and $20, across a library of more than 100 titles. You can check out our hands-on impressions from CES after the break, or check out Sony’s website for more information like which games are available (Metal Gear Solid V, Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus, Ultra Street Fighter IV and more.)

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact specs and images leak

Sony’s Xperia Z1 Compact was and still is a great phone. We can call it an exception to the rule, considering Sony made a compact phone with flagship specs, you don’t see stuff like that so often these days in a world (Android world at least) where a phone has to be huge in order… Read more »
