Christian Bale in Talks to Star in Sony’s Steve Jobs Film

Actor Christian Bale is in talks to play the leading role in the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic being produced by Sony, reports Variety. Leonardo DiCaprio was originally in talks to play Jobs, but withdrew from negotiations earlier this month.

Penned by Aaron Sorkin, the Steve Jobs biopic was originally set to be directed by “The Social Network” director David Fincher, who was said to be in talks with Sony earlier this year, but the director title went to Danny Boyle instead, who also directed the hit movie “Slumdog Millionaire.”

When David Fincher was still attached to the project, he reportedly was hoping to cast Christian Bale in the lead role due to his undeniable resemblance to the former CEO. Christian Bale is also known for his ability to adapt to roles, shedding and gaining weight as necessary to accurately portray characters.

Ashton Kutcher famously starred as Steve Jobs in the “JOBS” movie that focused on the former Apple CEO’s younger years, but the Sony film will be quite different, using material from Walter Isaacson’s Steve Jobs biography. The film, which has yet to receive a release date, will focus on three separate 30-minute scenes depicting three of Apple’s product launches.

Engadget giveaway: win a PS4 or Xbox One courtesy of Mad Genius Controllers!

There’s a new game controller in town and Mad Genius hopes you won’t take the news sitting down, because it’s all about motion control and expanding the scope of your game beyond the couch. The Mad Genius Controller, which recently launched on Kickstarter, is offering precision motion control that’s compatible with any game or console. While it works in normal controller mode, its magnetically connected halves can be split to enable motion tracking features. Aiming guns and bows is said be done with 1/100th inch accuracy and it can translate a player’s movement throughout the room to the on-screen character. The device can also be programmed so that certain movements can trigger combos and holster-reaching motions could replace digging into menus to access weapons. Since the Kickstarter is still underway, Mad Genius wanted to prep two lucky Engadget readers for its arrival with a giveaway for two consoles this week. Along with Mad Genius t-shirts, one winner will receive a PS4 Destiny Bundle and the other will get an Xbox One along with Titanfall. To get in on this opportunity, just head on down to the Rafflecopter widget below for up to three chances at winning one of these consoles.

Sony’s pint-sized yet powerful Xperia Z3 Compact reaches the US

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Sony may not have launched its small-yet-potent Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone through a US carrier, but it just delivered the next best thing. The tech firm has started selling an unlocked version of the Z3 Compact on its American online store for $530. It’s virtually identical to what Sony launched in Europe, complete with a 4.6-inch display, speedy Snapdragon 801 chip and 20.7-megapixel camera, but it packs native LTE data support for AT&T, T-Mobile and other US carriers that share their frequencies. You can even get it in bright orange or seafoam green if black or white seems too drab. You’ll still have to spring for the full-size Z3 or Z3v if you want Sony’s latest tech without paying the full cost up front, but this could easily fit the bill (and your pocket) if you have the cash to spend.

Sony’s Crackle takes aim at Netflix with a ‘Joe Dirt’ sequel

Netflix may soon be adding four new Adam Sandler flicks to its coffers, but that doesn’t mean it’s got a monopoly on the ol’ Waterboy’s creative endeavors. Variety reports that Sandler’s producing a sequel for the one and only Joe Dirt exclusively for Sony-owned streaming service (and Netflix competitor) Crackle. Seriously. SNL alum David Spade will once again don the mullet and those acid wash jeans to, well, no one knows quite yet – the first movie saw the eponymous Dirt abandoned by his parents at the Grand Canyon only to learn the true meaning of family 90 minutes later. It’s probably safe to assume this new production’s budget won’t reach the $17 million bar the original did, but hey — it’s still a sign that Crackle won’t let Netflix rule the original content roost without a fight. Kudos to them for trying to stick it to a streaming media titan, but really? That’s the franchise they thought needed a second chance? Really?

PlayStation 4’s video editing app has a few new clip-splicing tools

Have you or someone you know actually used the PlayStation 4’s SHAREFactory app to make fancy-looking highlight reels of gaming exploits? We ask because despite is being out for awhile now, unlike photo-mode images, we still haven’t run across any samples aside from those produced by Sony. No matter, because the catch-up king is adding a handful of new features to the video-editing app anyway. In addition to new themes and saturation presets and improved audio quality, among other things, the ability to auto-trim longer clips has been added, too. From the sounds of it, this should be a pretty worthwhile patch for those who prefer to do their video-crafting and tweaking from their console as opposed to using external software. What we’re left wondering, however, is when the 2.0 firmware update (the one with Share Play and YouTube exports) for the console itself will finally hit. Maybe we could get application folders and custom themes with it too?

The first trailer for PlayStation’s ‘Powers’ series doesn’t hold anything back

Powers' main characters

If you were worried that Sony’s transformation of Powers into a PlayStation Network show would lose the comics’ grittiness, you can (probably) relax. The first trailer for the original series is now available, and it’s pretty clear that the production maintains a dark, twisted world of superhero crime. Detective Christian Walker is foul-mouthed and not exactly sympathy-inducing, while the suspects he’s chasing are more warped than your typical comic book villains. You’ll probably have to wait until the series launch in December to see much more, but it’s already apparent that Sony is taking advantage of Powers‘ console-only release to push a few boundaries.

Sony’s ‘PlayStation Experience’ is a two-day public gaming show in Las Vegas

Sony’s holding a two-day PlayStation event in the middle of the desert, and it wants you to attend. Okay, technically Las Vegas isn’t the middle of the desert, but it’s certainly out there. What will said event entail? PlayStation social media man Sid Shuman says you’ll, “Sit in on in-depth panels, meet the industry’s best developers, score hands-on gameplay with tons of upcoming PlayStation games, collect free swag, and get a chance to purchase rare collectibles directly from their favorite game studios.” It’s kind of like PAX, basically, but all PlayStation. One more similarity to PAX? It’ll cost ya. $50 for a one-day pass, $90 for both days. If those previous activities left you still sitting on the fence about attendance, Shuman also promises, “an exclusive first look at what’s coming next in 2015, which I am told you will not want to miss.” Project Morpheus details? Maybe a PlayStation helicopter? Who knows!

Hey, if nothing else, it’s an excuse to fly to Las Vegas in December, right?
