‘Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’ is having a rocky launch on Xbox One and PlayStation 4

Sad Kevin Spacey

Call of Duty continues to be a pretty big deal. Despite annualized releases and the occasional stinker (we’re looking at you, Modern Warfare 3!), people still love to wage virtual war on Activision’s battlefields. Hey, we hear this year’s game is pretty good! And when you’ve got a new Xbox One or PlayStation 4 this holiday, there’s a strong possibility you’ll want to check out this year’s entry, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare — statistically speaking, anyway. Should you be one of those folks: beware! Both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of CoD are having issues. The kind of issues that make the game outright unplayable.

Somewhere in Los Angeles, Kevin Spacey is shedding a single tear and he doesn’t know why.

So, what’s going on with Call of Duty? It’s down to platform. First up:

PlayStation 4

If you pre-loaded the game on PlayStation 4, Sony suggests deleting the file (nearly 40GBs) and pulling down the whole shebang once more. More specifically, it looks like Advanced Warfare issues on PS4 are strictly limited to folks who pre-loaded the game before launch (today). If you took advantage of said functionality, that may be why you’re experiencing issues starting the game.

Here’s what Sony suggest you do, in full:

  • “Restore PS4 licences. [Settings] > [PSN] > [Restore License].

If this doesn’t solve the issue continue to [following steps]:

  1. Go to Library, highlight Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and press Options.
  2. Delete Game Content.
  3. While still in the Library highlight Call of Duty: AW and press X to re-download the content.

Please ensure you download all available updates for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and your system is running the latest system software.”

Activision has yet to acknowledge the issues publicly, and we’ve not heard back from reps.

Xbox One

We’ve got firsthand experience with this one, and the issue is a little more prevalent than PlayStation’s equivalent. If you buy Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare on disc, beware not to allow the game’s update to download when you first insert the disc into your Xbox One. We said yes, and the game was unable to install from the disc. It ends up looping between “Installing” and “Queued,” occasionally spinning up the disc, then quitting, then spinning again, then quitting again, ad infinitum. In the business, we call that “pretty whack.” If you end up in this situation, we’ve got a tested solution — and it works, at least on my Xbox One — care of Crave Online:

  1. Remove the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare from the Xbox One disc tray.
  2. Navigate to My Games & Apps, then select the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and hit the Xbox One gamepad’s Menu button.
  3. Select “Uninstall game” and hit A
  4. Re-insert your Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare game disc
  5. When asked whether you want to install the game’s update, select “Update later”
  6. The game will install like normal! Hooray!

Again, Activision has yet to acknowledge the issues publicly. We’ve asked. The company has forum threads set up to address issues with digital versions of the game, and an overall setup/installation page (which warns against playing the game before it completely installs, despite current-gen consoles allowing you to start before installation is finished). There’s even a page dedicated to Xbox One installation issues, but nothing regarding the installing/queued loop that some folks are experiencing with disc versions of the game on Xbox One.

We’ll update this piece as we hear more, but for now: Beware!

Michael Fassbender in Talks to Play Steve Jobs in Upcoming Sony Biopic

michaelfassbenderFollowing yesterday’s news that Christian Bale had opted to pull out of Sony’s upcoming Steve Jobs biopic penned by Aaron Sorkin, Variety has shared news that Michael Fassbender is now in talks to take on the role of Steve Jobs.

According to the site, Fassbender is in “early talks” with director Danny Boyle and Sony executives about possibly starring in the film. Fassbender, while less well known than Christian Bale and previous Jobs candidate Leonardo DiCaprio, has been in several high profile movies including Inglourious Basterds, Prometheus, 12 Years a Slave, and The Counselor. He’s perhaps most widely known for his role as Magneto in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming Steve Jobs biopic focuses on three continuous 30-minute scenes that depict three of Jobs’ product launches including the debut of the Mac, the introduction of the NeXT Computer, and the release of the iPod.

While it is unclear who will take on the role of Steve Jobs, Seth Rogen is reportedly in talks to play Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Jessica Chastain, from The Help is also being considered for an unspecified role in the film.

Xperia Z2 and Z2 Tablet getting update for PS4 Remote Play

Sony-Xperia-Z2

If you’ve been holding out for PS4 Remote Play on your Xperia Z2 (or Z2 Tablet), your wait is over. Sony is officially pushing out the user experience update to those two devices which brings full support for streaming PS4 games to your device. The update will let you play full PS4 games with a Dualshock 4 controller right on your smartphone or tablet, which is an extremely cool feature, especially for gamers.

That’s not the only feature this update is bringing, though. There are also some audio improvements coming to the Z2, all of which are designed to make your music sound much better thanks to new codec support and some proprietary Sony technology that restores some compression lost in digital files. The update also lets the Z2 take advantage of Sony’s latest smart camera features, and it brings along the Ultra Stamina Mode that’s present in the Xperia Z3. This power saving mode shuts down all but the most important functions of the phone, drastically extending battery life.

A few other features in the update include smart auto-rotation, a record screen function for taking videos of what you’re doing on your device (and yes, that does work with Remote Play), and support for Sony’s smart unlock with connected Bluetooth wearables like the Sony Smartwatch. That smart unlock feature has been pretty heavily advertised with Lollipop, so it’s great to see it make its way on to a device still running KitKat.

This is a pretty major update for something that isn’t an Android 5.0 upgrade. If you have an Xperia Z2 or Z2 tablet, keep checking for the update.

‘Call of Duty Advanced Warfare’: The Joystiq Review

You get just a novel snippet of peace in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. In this shooter’s future, technology has trumped terrorism, rooted out the last evil masterminds and flexed its bionic muscles in total defiance of lead-footed politicians who’d rather talk than get things done. “The world is running out of bad guys,” your partner says, hopeful but tragically unaware that he’s basically describing a video game glitch. Call of Duty never runs out of bad guys.

This one gets points for honesty, though, in that there is no pretentious cover-up of why the good guys beat the bad guys (or why the plot finds them easily interchangeable). In Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, you win because you have better guns, stronger sights, super abilities and superior movement. Whether it’s in the rich and varied multiplayer mode, or the frantic, thrill-a-minute single-player campaign, you’re constantly relying on cool weapons and combat data to make taking lives easier. Advanced Warfare front-loads the benefits of power in a franchise that has always made technology the exalted, almost fetishized solution to every problem. And you know what? It’s more fun when it admits as much.

Sony’s PlayStation 4 2.0 update is here, go download it

Own a PlayStation 4? Today’s your day: the console’s big 2.0 update is finally live. Sony’s been teasing the update for weeks, lauding the console’s new ability to play music from a USB drive, the availability of system menu themes and promising new voice commands, party options and a less crowded home-screen. The update also gives the console’s unique “share” button a little more power: the ability to upload video clips directly to YouTube and, most notably, remotely stream your games to a friend over the internet. Sony invited me to try some of these features ahead of today’s launch and, yes, they all seem to work just fine — at least in a controlled environment.

Sony walked me through the update in its Palo Alto, CA office last week, showing me the new themes, party options and even a few updated voice commands. The most interesting demo, of course, was SharePlay — the console’s new ability to stream PlayStation 4 games from one console to another over the internet. Think of it as a localized PlayStation Now between your console and a friends. This worked too, but left me with some concern: even in Sony’s controlled demo environment, I noticed a perceptible amount of lag between the monitor displaying the host console and the guest. It wasn’t enough to effect gameplay in Infamous Second Son, but a flightier residential connection could easily render the game unplayable.

The demo left me with a little doubt, but even more optimism — the feature is brimming with potential: it not only gives players the ability to test out their friends’ libraries remotely, but even join them in local multiplayer sessions in games that don’t have online multiplayer! Will SharePlay live up to its potential for the average user? Well, now’s your chance to find out: SharePlay and the PS4 System Software v2.0 is available for download today. Let us know how it works for you in the comments below.

PS4 Remote Play app now live on Google Play with support for Xperia Z3 devices

remoteplay_Z3-sony

Sony has today launched its much-anticipated, eagerly-awaited PS4 Remote Play application, which is, for those unaware, a revolutionary new feature that gives users the ability to stream games from their PS4 console to an Xperia Z3 smartphone or tablet.

The app is now available to download through the Play Store for free and is compatible with the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. To make playing games on your mobile device more manageable, Sony intends to introduce a new GCM10 GAME Control Mount for its official DualShock 4 wireless controller, which looks much like a suction mount on a Sat-Nav.

Configuring Remote Play is simple. All you have to do is update your PlayStation 4 to the latest software version 2.0 which is scheduled to roll out later today and download the application on your Xperia device, and then you’re good to go.

Tell us how you really feel about the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4

Xbox One vs PS4

It’s been almost a year since the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 were released in North America, with sales reaching over 15 million units combined worldwide. While we reviewed both consoles, giving the Xbox One an Engadget score of 81 and the PS4 a score of 83, what we reviewed were the systems as they existed at launch, with some great features and a few kinks, but still lots of potential. Since then, plenty has happened for both machines — like Xbox One shedding its mandatory Kinect unit and the release of a few marquee titles like Titanfall and Destiny. To find out where each system stands today, we turn to you, our readers, to let us know about your own experiences with the two consoles. How many games have you bought? Which do you play every day? Do you still make use of options like voice control? Write a detailed review of the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 on their product pages to let us know, and we’ll feature a few of the most insightful comments in our roundup posts next month.

Xbox One price slashed to $349 for the holidays

Good things come to those who wait, and Microsoft’s now in the business of richly rewarding those capable of delaying their gratification. If you’ve yet to pick up an Xbox One, then holding off until November 2nd will see the company apply a $50 price drop across the range. That means that a Kinect-free Assassins Creed or Sunset Overdrive bundle will be available for just $349, while the limited edition Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare package with a custom console and controller will be priced at $449. The offer runs all the way through until January 3rd, although we’d imagine that price sticking around if it helps to make a dent in Sony’s reasonably healthier console business.
