Sony finally brings Theme Creator Beta to life allowing you to tailer 300+ assets to build your own themes

Sony has been working on a Theme Creator for quite some time. When word of it first came about I was pretty excited. Unfortunately the ability to build those Xperia themes was limited to specific theme partners. It wasn’t all bad, there we a number of first run themes that were pretty cool. However, none of […]

President of Sony Mobile declines recent rumors of division’s sale

Sony Logo

Just over a week ago, Sony revealed its plans to bring back profits to the company over the next few years. A big part of the report was regarding the company’s mobile division, the section of the company which has seen a major decline over the past years. Specifically, Sony mentioned in the report that cutting costs would be a must, and that they may even consider potential “partnerships or spinoffs”.

This isn’t the first time the company’s CEO has explained this, though. Back in January, CEO Kazuo Hirai was quoted saying, “Without drastic reforms such as joint ventures or alliances, [Sony’s mobile and TV businesses] will be in the red three years from now.” But just because the CEO voiced his opinion to the media, doesn’t mean there aren’t differences in opinion within the company. Now, it seems as though a sale of the mobile division may not be true, because Hiroki Totoki, head of Sony’s mobile division, has now denied rumors about a potential sale of the company’s mobile division.

Totoki told French newspaper Le Figaro:

At the beginning of February there was speculation about a sale of Sony Mobile. It’s completely untrue.

However, while the potential of a merger or partnership is now seemingly off the table, Totoki also admitted that the company’s mobile portfolio is too diverse and needs to be refocused. He also mentions that, since consumers are keeping their mobile devices for a longer period of time, Sony would begin slowing down their product launches.

We’re live at the 2015 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco!

Moscone Center North Hall

Every year, in late winter, covering the game industry gives me a chance to leave New York City at its most miserable. It’s with great pleasure that I tell you, yes, we’re here in San Francisco — where its 60 degrees and not 34 — to bring all the news, hands-ons, interviews, videos, and combinations thereof, straight from the 2015 Game Developers Conference. From here on out, we’re gonna make that name a bit simpler: GDC 2015. We’ve even got a page right here where you can keep up to date on all the aforementioned coverage. Head below for a brief rundown of the week to come.

What’s happening this year, besides developers talking to each other about the art and business of making games? We’ve already seen a taste, all the way from Barcelona, care of Mobile World Congress.

HTC and Valve are teaming on a virtual reality headset named HTC Vive. Or HTC ReVive. Or maybe just Vive? Or maybe just Revive? It’s a bit puzzling, honestly.

We’re getting a hands-on in the coming days, and we’ve already got some gorgeous detail shots right here featuring British raconteur James Trew.

Additionally, Samsung and Oculus are continuing their partnership on Gear VR with a new, smaller version intended for use with Samsung’s new Galaxy S6 and S6 edge phones. Don’t expect to be blown away: it’s largely the same as the first Gear VR which launched late last year, albeit with a smaller screen. We’ve got more info right here, and beauty shots below.

And today, just before GDC 2015 officially kicks off, Epic Games announced that its widely used game engine, Unreal Engine 4, is now free for all to use on a commercial (or non-commercial) basis. It’s a major move for an engine maker, and it means one more great tool is more widely available to the folks who make the games we love.

As for what the rest of the week holds, only two things are certain: both Sony and NVIDIA are hosting press events. The former is focusing on PlayStation 4’s virtual reality headset, “Project Morpheus”, while the latter is teased as “more than 5 years in the making” and will apparently “redefine the future of gaming”. I expect nothing less than a picante gouda in a holodeck.

Don’t miss out on all the latest from GDC 2015! Follow along at our events page right here.

Sony ups its game with the announcement of the super spec’d Xperia Z4 tablet

I would say the majority of our readers are Android enthusiasts.  What that means is most of you understand and care about specs in the devices you choose to buy.  Luckily for us fanatics, Sony announced, an ultra powerhouse, the Xperia Z4 10″ tablet.

First things first, the tablet will arrive with a 2k display for your viewing pleasure, and that will be powered by the new Snapdragon 810 octa-core 64 bit processor.  In keeping with tradition, Sony improves upon its design by reducing the weight down to 389g, and reducing the thickness down to a meager 6.1mm, which is 40% thinner than the ball point pen on my desk.  To keep things humming along, the Z4 will have 3GB of RAM, and it will have 32GB of on-board storage with the ability to expand memory up to 128GB using the microSD card slot.

The Xperia Z4 tablet will arrive with dual front facing stereo speakers, and on top of that, Sony pushes the development of high quality sound by offering High-Res Audio using DSEE HX which upscales the audio fidelity of digital music tracks.  The tablet will also support digital noise cancelling for times when the background noise forces you to increase the volume to levels dangerous to your ears.

The rear facing camera is a standard 8MP, while the front facing camera is a 5.1MP wide-angle shooter, which is great for video calls.  The Z4 will also be able to connect to the Playstation 4 using remote play, and to make sure you stay competitive, you’ll be able to use the DUALSHOCK4 controller on your tablet.

For a tablet with a 2K display paird with a Snapdragon 810, you would expect battery life to suffer.  Instead, Sony claims an impressive 17 hours of video playback on a single charge.

To round things off, the Xperia Z4 will run Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, and like its predecessors, the Z4 is waterproof and dust tight(IP65 and IP68).

On paper, this is quite possibly the best tablet any manufacturer has to offer.

Sony releases Theme Creator Beta, makes Xperia theme creation easy

Theming — that’s what all the cool kids are doing these days. The HTC One M9 has theming, the Galaxy S6 has theming, and now Sony is raising up the theming bar as well. Sony’s most recent Xperia devices already offered themable skins, but now Sony has released a new tool called the Theme Creator Beta, a custom Java desktop program that will help 3rd party developers craft their own Sony themes.

Sony claims there are more than 300 adjustable components for users of the creator, this includes changing wallpapers, the navigation bar and so much more. Sony’s Theme Creator portal on its website mentions how designers can use themes to promote brands, services or games. “This way, your theme can show up on millions of Xeria devices in the theme picker”. Of course, just because Sony is trying to appeal to bigger companies and brands doesn’t mean it is restricting use of the tool.

Anyone with some basic image editing skills that’s reasonably tech savvy should people able to utilize this tool, though to varying levels of success depending on your experience levels. Once your masterpiece is finished, the Theme Creator will create an APK that can be applied to any compatible Xperia device or can be submitted to Sony for inclusion its repository. Interested in giving it a go? You can download the Theme Creator Beta from Sony’s website.

Sony introduces new mid-range Xperia M4 Aqua

Fresh of Sony’s announcement of the Xperia Z4 tablet Sony also introduced the Xperia M4 Aqua. Sony claims to set the new mid-range standard with the M4 Aqua. Sony has been knows to create some of the best tablets and phones on the market for android. The Xperia M4 Aqua boast no compromise in features offering the most popular features from their Xperia Z line of tablets.

The phone will with some high end specs for a mid-range device. Sony states that the M4 will come with a 13MP camera with F2.0 aperture, octa-core 64-bit Snapdragon 615, and be water proof. The device will be launching in 80 countries worldwide and more than 100 carriers in Spring of 2015. The M4 Aqua comes in white, black, coral, and silver. The device itself comes with a metallic and tempered glass with cues from the Sony OmniBalance design.

With a crowded smartphone market Sony appears to be opting for dominance in the more affordable mid range line of smartphones while still offering a premium look and feel. Another key about the M4 Aqua is in the name itself boasting being waterproof, a feature dropped from the Galaxy line this year. Will it be enough to go head to head with other phones in the mid-range such as the Moto G and E? Or is this Sony backing away from the high end Android game?

Sony announces 64-bit, waterproof Xperia M4 Aqua

Sony xperia m4 aqua hand

Along side Sony’s announcement of the Xperia Z4 Tablet, the Japanese tech giant has launched an all new, waterproof, 64-bit mid-range Xperia M4 Aqua.

The Sony Xperia M4 Aqua follows the recent announcements of the Xperia E4 and E4g with the Xperia M4 Aqua adding to Sony’s somewhat sparse low to mid range offerings. Something we debated was necessary for Sony to find major success in the mobile market during our Friday Debate Podcast.

Sony xperia m4 aqua

The highlight of the specs list for the Xperia M4 Aqua is the inclusion of the 64-bit Snapdragon 615 SoC. This is a quad-core processor with four of those awesome Cortex A53 cores in it. Two of said A53s clock in at 1.7GHz, for the heavy lifting, while the other two come in at a more modest 1.0GHZ to keep the lights on.

Sony Xperia M4 Aqua Specificiations

Processor Snapdragon 615 64-bit with Adreno 405 GPU
Display 5-inch 1280×720
Operating System Android 5.0 Lollipop
Camera 13MP rear, 5MP front
Memory and Storage 2GB RAM and 8GB/16GB internal storage. Expandable up to 32GB microSD
Battery 2,400mAh

With specs like these, it may come as a surprise that Sony claims up to 2 days of battery life. Before we second guess them, let’s remember their success with the Xperia Z3 for battery life.

Sony xperia m4 aqua waterproof

Waterproofing on the Xperia M4 Aqua comes in as IP65 certified, good for a shallow dunk for a half hour. IP68 dust protection is very handy as well. Risking a 5-inch display at 720p is adequate, but may not satisfy users that have become accustomed HD and beyond displays. Perhaps the anticipated price of 299 euros is low enough to forgive the display.

Sony is not yet announcing global availability dates or pricing just yet, we can only hope this modest 13MP camera packing, Android 5.0 Lollipop powered device reaches enough users to help Sony out of their current slump.

Head on over to the Sony website for more details, then stay tuned for more info on the Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, other Sony announcements and all things MWC 2015.

Sony’s waterproof M4 Aqua comes with a 5-inch HD display, 64-bit Octa-Core processor and runs Lollipop

11_Xperia_M4_Aqua_Black_Group

Carrying on from unveiling the Xperia Z4 tablet at the MWC in Barcelona, Sony has taken the covers off of its Xperia M4 Aqua, a smartphone that offers front and rear cameras that are more than handy, along with OmniBalance design and a 64-bit Qualcomm processor. We have the specifications, gallery, video and press release after the break.

19_Xperia_M4_Aqua

As you can see from the pictures, Sony’s M4 Aqua looks remarkably like its bigger sibling, the Xperia Z3, and that is no bad thing. The M4 Aqua is a mid-range device, with a Snapdragon 615 Octa-core processor and 2GB of RAM underneath the OmniBalance exterior design. Yes, you read that correctly, a mid-range handset with 2GB of RAM. Coupled with Sony’s minimalist approach to customising its user interface, the M4 Aqua should be pretty slick to handle. The 2,400 battery is enough to get the phone through 2 days of use according to Sony, although Stamina Mode is included in case you really need to eek out the power.

Along with the usual IP65 and IP68 certification (waterproof and dust-tight), that Sony is renowned for, the M4 Aqua also boasts a naked USB port. This means that there is one less cap to worry about losing or damaging. It should be noted though, that this does not mean you can charge the phone while it is submerged.

The M4 Aqua carries two good cameras; a 13MP rear-facing camera with flash and also the 5MP front camera that has an extra wide angle lens for taking those selfie pictures.

Specifications:

  • 5-inch HD IPS display with 1280 x 720 resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 Octa-core 64-bit processor (Quad-core 1.5GHz + Quad-core 1GHz)
  • Adreno 405 GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 8/16GB internal storage
  • MicroSD card support (up to 32GB)
  • 13MP Rear camera with flash with image stabiliser
  • 5MP Front camera with wide angle lens
  • A-GPS/ Bluetooth/ NFC/ WiFi/ USB 2.0
  • Dimensions: 145.5 x 72.6 x 7.3mm
  • Weight: 140grams
  • 2,400mAh battery
  • Android 5.0 Lollipop

The M4 Aqua runs Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, which is something that every Android manufacturer should be striving for when releasing a new smartphone in 2015. Sony says that the M4 Aqua will be released worldwide this spring, with a price tag of €299 ($335). Don’t forget that you can catch the rest of our Mobile World Congress coverage right here.

Xperia_Z4_Tablet_GroupToday is the second day of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and after HTC and Samsung hogged the limelight yesterday, Sony has unveiled the Xperia Z4 tablet that boasts a 2K display and is only 6.1mm thick. We have the specifications, video, a gallery of images as well as the full press release just after the break.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 2GHz Octa-Core 64-bit processor
  • Adreno 430 GPU
  • 3GB RAM
  • 32GB internal storage
  • MicroSD card support
  • 8.1MP Rear camera
  • 5.1MP Wide angle front-facing camera
  • Front-facing Stereo speakers

  • Dimensions: 167 x 254 x 6.1mm

  • Android 5.0 Lollipop

As expected, the Xperia Z4 tablet is running the latest silicon, in the form of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 processor with Sony claiming up to 17 hours worth of video playback. Sony also says that the 10.1-inch 2K display is one of the brightest on offer. Coupled with the stereo front speakers, I can imagine the Xperia Z4 being great for watching videos. One of the main talking points is the thinness of the tablet, having been whittled down to just 6.1mm. As is now customary with a Sony device, the Xperia Z4 tablet is waterproof and dust-tight (IP65/IP68) and looks pretty good design-wise.

The Sony Xperia Z4 runs Android 5.0 Lollipop right from the start and can be had in WiFi or LTE models. There’s no word on pricing as yet, although Sony has stated that the Xperia Z4 tablet is launching globally in June this year. Sony’s new Xperia Z4 Tablet delivers raw power in a crazy slim body

sony xperia z4 tablet

It’s not really a surprise, following the leak from last week, but Sony just introduced the latest version of the sexy 10.1-inch Xperia Tablet at MWC 2015.

We were hoping for a new version of the Xperia Z flagship smartphone from Sony, but what we got instead might make up for that: the new Xperia Z4 Tablet is thinner, lighter, has a higher resolution screen, and packs more power.

In terms of design, the Xperia Z4 Tablet looks a lot like its smaller sibling, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, released last year at IFA. The same design language featuring rounded edges is used to great success on the 10.1 model, and amazingly Sony managed to make the Z4 Tablet even slimmer, at 6.1 millimeters (compared to 6.4 millimeters on the previous generation). The device weighs just 389 grams, which is pretty impressive for this class. And yes, the device is still water resistant, with a dual IP65 and IP68 rating.

sony xperia z4 tablet 1

The thinner body doesn’t bring a decrease in battery capacity – the Z4 Tablet features a 6,000 mAh unit, the same as on the Z2. The screen is now Quad HD, which is a welcome change, but that may take a slight hit on battery life, unless Sony found a way to mitigate the issue.

The Xperia Z4 Tablet is the first slate to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, featuring four fast cores and four power-saving cores arranged in a big.LITTLE configuration, as well as an Adreno 430 GPU. There’s 3GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of storage, and microSD support. The main camera has been switched to an 8MP sensor, down from 13MP on the previous gen.

Sony seems to have lost confidence in its mobile business, with all options being on the table right now, including selling the entire unit. Even if the future of the Xperia series is in question, we’re happy to see Sony putting its best foot forward when it comes to tablets. The Z4 Tablet looks like an amazing choice for anyone interested in a 10-inch tablet, and we can’t wait to put it through its paces. My colleagues are fondling its slim lines as I’m writing this post, so stay tuned for a hands-on later today.
