Sony’s event on May 26 in New Dehli could launch the Xperia Z4 internationally

Sony_Xperia_Z3v_Back_Xperia_Logo_02_TA

Later this month, Sony will host an event in New Dehli that could mark the international launch of its flagship for 2015. The invite for the event on May 26 has elements of water and that means we are practically guaranteed to see the Xperia M4 Aqua become official. However, there are reports that the Xperia Z4 will also be present. The Xperia Z4, as of today, is only available in Japan and distribution is expected to expand by the end of May.

Hit the break to see the invitation.

Amazon disables Sony TV Amazon Instant Video app on other devices

amazon_instant_video_error

Earlier this week we reported on efforts to take the version of the Amazon Instant Video app for Sony TV devices and port it over to other Android TV devices like the Nexus Player. New reports indicate that Amazon has rendered the app inoperable on non-Sony TV devices.

Users were interested in the Sony version of the Instant Video app because it was a better user experience than the version Amazon was officially deploying through the Google Play Store. Installation did require sideloading the APK.

Members of the XDA community are currently looking through the code in hopes of figuring out how Amazon may be determining the installs are not on Sony TV devices.

Hardware manufacturers take notice of MediaTek’s deca-core processor

mediatek_logo_orange

The upcoming Helio X20 processor, developed by MediaTek, has reportedly received attention from plenty of the largest Android device manufacturers. Companies that have expressed interest in the deca-core processor include Sony, LG, HTC, ZTE, Lenovo, Meizu, Huawei, and Xiaomi. The only major companies missing from that list are Samsung and Motorola, but they have their reasons. Samsung utilizes in-house Exynos processors while Motorola has a close relationship with Qualcomm to take from their Snapdragon line.

The heightened interest in the Helio X20 processor could allow MediaTek to become the go-to for such components. MediaTek has released processors of all levels at competitive prices for hardware manufacturers. The Helio X20 is being aimed at high-end devices and carries a price of about $241.

Android 5.1.1 spotted running on the Sony Xperia Z3

Sony_Xperia_Z3v_Main_02_TA

Sony has been working hard to get Android 5.0 Lollipop on the majority of their devices, and has been quite successful thus far. Now, according to a video from Wayerless, it seems the company is quickly working towards another update, Android 5.1.1, on what seems to be the Sony Xperia Z3.

The video shows a handful of new changes that are happening in the update, such as the Walkman app renamed as Music, new buttery smooth animations, and more. You can check out the video below for a lot of the changes.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Starting out with its Xperia Z3 devices, Sony has been rolling out Lollipop since March, and should finish with the majority of them by July. With how on the ball Sony has been with rolling out the latest Android version to its devices, it shouldn’t be too long before we start seeing Android 5.1.1 updates rolling out soon.

It’s excellent when you have a smartphone that a company is going to actively support. After all, everyone wants the latest and greatest as soon as it comes out. Sony realizes that, too.

Are you looking forward to the new update on your Xperia Z3 this summer? Let us know in the comments.

Sony Smart Tennis Sensor to analyze games in North America and the UK

Sony’s Smart Tennis Sensor has finally arrived in the US, Canada and the UK from Japan, and just in time for the perfect weather to start working on being the next Nadal. It’s been a while since we saw it at CES 2014, though, so let’s all refresh our memories: the sensor’s a small circular device that fits into the bottom of a compatible racket’s handle once you remove its logo cap. It can not only detect the swing type you use, but also the shot count, ball impact spot, ball spin and swing and ball speeds. Plus, the accompanying iOS or Android app can record videos and associate data with specific parts, so you’d know what you need to improve on.

It could be a pretty useful tool for anyone who takes their matches seriously — or for those tired of getting almost nothing but “love” the whole game — but the downside is that you might have to get a new racket if the ones you have aren’t listed on the compatible models page. In the US and Canada, the sensor itself will cost you $200 and CA$250, respectively, and can be purchased from Sony’s online or select Wilson brick-and-mortar stores. Unfortunately, Sony didn’t reveal a price for the UK, where it can only be purchased from Wilson dealers.

Video: here’s Android 5.1.1 running on the Sony Xperia Z3

Sony has already updated many of its smartphones to Android 5.0 Lollipop, but now we’re looking forward to the jump to 5.1 and a new video shows us what to expect.

The video from Chilean website Wayerless (via Xperia Blog) is a brief walk through the updated interface of what appears to be the Sony Xperia Z3 (D6603). Among the changes that we can spot are some new animations, flatter icons in the settings menu, the name change of the Walkman app to simply Music, and of course, the improved quick settings tiles that let you connect through WiFi or Bluetooth without going through the settings.

Sony began rolling out Lollipop to its devices in March, starting with the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Like with Samsung and HTC devices, the Android 5.1 update (released by Google on March 9) is expected to hit Sony devices this summer – in August, according to some reports.

Xbox One pulls off an unlikely sales victory over the PS4

Well, this is kind of surprising: the Xbox One lead console sales last month. I say it’s surprising because there wasn’t an exclusive game that launched for the system, nor was their a new bundle deal going at the time, either. Regardless, it’s good news and something that Redmond hasn’t seen in an awfully long time. The company says that domestic sales of the console increased some 63 percent compared to last April while active Xbox Live users on a global scale grew by 24 percent in the same window. Of course, we still don’t have hard numbers in terms of sales about the Xbox One, and until the console breaks 20 million sold you can bet that we almost assuredly won’t.

What’s Sony have to say about it all? That it led software sales for the month (Mortal Kombat X was the top selling game overall) and that it remains the cumulative sales leader in the United States. So there’s that.

Sony’s Smart Tennis Sensor serves deep statistics for tennis players

sony_smart_tennis_sensor

There are tennis players, amateurs and athletes alike, that want to know everything about their game. And there is only so much that a coach or trainer can do. Enter Sony’s little attachment for tennis racquets that tracks and analyzes performance on the court.

sony_smart_tennis_sensor_app_layout

What can the Sony Smart Tennis Sensor track? Number of shots, ball impact shot, swing type, swing speed, ball speed, and ball spin. Players can set goals from the dedicated Smart Tennis Sensor app and see how their performances either meet or fall short of them. Also, users can use their phones to record play while the sensor retrieves data. The video playback is then aligned with the data so that players see exactly what what they did when they did it.

The Smart Tennis Sensor app also supports Android Wear devices to display immediate results stroke-after-stroke.

The Sony Smart Tennis is available for $199 and attachments for Prince, Wilson, Yonex, and HEAD tennis racquets cost $9.

The ‘Ratchet & Clank’ Movie comes out April 29th, 2016

If you were wondering when Sony would pull its finger out and announce the release date for the Ratchet & Clank movie, then today is a good day for you. The company has revealed that the flick will arrive in theaters on April 29th, 2016, with the video game cast of James Arnold Taylor and David Kaye in the starring roles. For some reason, the studio felt compelled to upgrade the rest of the acting roster, so don’t be surprised when Paul Giamatti, Rosario Dawson, John Goodman and Sylvester Stallone pop up in the closing credits.

Unlike plenty of console-to-screen adaptations, the game’s creative team was consulted on the way the film should pan out. The studio says that it “collaborated extensively” with writer TJ Fixman, character designer Dave Guertin and production designer Greg Baldwin. At the same time, Insomniac Game is working on a remake of the original Ratchet & Clank game that’ll arrive around the same time as the movie that ties in with the film’s new origin story.
