Sony Xperia Z3 to get Android Lollipop in February

There is a good news for Sony Xperia Z3 users! Sony Electronics COO Michael Fasulo announced that the company will start rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Xperia Z3 phones from next month. While Fasulo didn’t reveal the exact date for the update, his announcement at a CES 2015 press conference has definitely brought a breather for those who own Z3 mobiles.
Earlier in 2014, Sony’s had promised that the entire Xperia Z range would be getting Android Lollipop updates.
The company had even released a video of an AOSP build of the software running on its devices in November of last year. Those, who want to take a look what their devices would look like after the software update, can check out this link.

Android 5.0 Lollipop set to roll out to Sony Xperia Z3 next month

We already new that Sony would be bringing Android 5.0 Lollipop to the “core” Xperia Z2 and Z3 lines in early 2015, with the first whispers of this timeframe surfacing in October with Sony finally confirming the news in December. Up until now, the Japanese smartphone maker hasn’t been too specific on exactly when the Lollipop rollout will happen. Sony still hasn’t given us an exact date, but they have revealed the update will begin rolling out to the Xperia Z3 next month.
It’s unclear how much longer it will take for the update to reach other members of the Z3 and Z2 family, though it’s still nice to hear that Sony is committed to bringing Lollipop sooner rather than later. We’ll be sure to update you as soon as we learn more specifics of their plans.
How do you feel about how Sony has handled its plans for Lollipop so far — about as expected, moving faster than you expected or somewhere in between? Let us know in the comments.
#Bendgate comes to Android: Sony Xperia Z3 bends while in pocket
In the year just passed, there was one controversy that had Apple owners crying out and Android owners sniggering in secret: #BendGate. The controversy surrounded the iPhone 6 Plus and its ability (read: not a feature) to warp while in your pocket. While the official reports were minimal, the social media world took the controversy […]

Sony commissions limited edition Xperia Z3 devices with artistic engravings of Berlin, Tokyo and Warsaw
Some phone manufacturers occasionally release limited edition versions of their flagship devices that seem a little excessive – the Swarovski crystal encrusted versions of Samsung devices immediately spring to mind. Sometimes, though, there will actually be a limited edition that is genuinely interesting, like the limited edition Xperia Z3 devices that Sony has just commissioned as part […]

Sony testing Android 5.0 on Xperia Z1, Z1, and Z3

I remember back in 2010 when I had a Xperia X10, I was really annoyed by the fact that everyone around me with an Android phone was enjoying their share of Android 2.1, while I kept hearing how Sony delayed the update again. In my opinion, that ‘delaying of update’ had a huge impact on Sony’s reputation, but now it is good to see that Sony is learning from their history. In the video below, you will see that Sony is testing the latest Android Lollipop 5.0 on the Sony Xperia Z1, Z2, and Z3.
If you are a developer, then you can give this AOSP version a shot on your unlocked smartphone. We will see the official version hopefully early next year.
Are you excited about this? Let us know in the comment box below.

Sony has AOSP Android Lollipop Running on Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3 [Video]
Everyone is eagerly awaiting their device manufacturer, and corresponding carriers, to start pushing out updates to the latest Android OS version, Lollipop. While we all know in our hearts that the first set of updates for devices beyond the Nexus line aren’t likely to begin rolling out for another month or two, we are all still eager to see and hear about progress for our specific devices. A blog post that went up today on the Sony Mobile Blog shows owners of the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 some hope. Not that Sony didn’t already announce that Android 5.0 would be coming to those devices starting early in 2015.
It is all still very early and is just straight AOSP Android, meaning Sony hasn’t put in all their software and specialty apps yet. It is sure pretty looking though.
A secondary post was published to the Sony Developer blog as well that lets developers, and tinkerers alike, know that they are working hard to bring the binaries for unlocked Xperia devices to use as a base for compiling your own AOSP ROM from the AOSP source code. They also already have the device configurations ready for the Xperia Z1 and Z2 with the Z3 on the way.

Sony to bring Android 5.0 to entire Xperia Z line
Yesterday Google announced the new Motorola Nexus 6, HTC Nexus 8 and the ASUS Nexus Player devices. They also confirmed that Android L is Android Lollipop and is Android 5.0. We know the Nexus line dating back to the Nexus 4 will get an Android 5.0 update at some point. We also know a number a Motorola devices will also be picking up the sweet new treat. Now we hear from Sony what their plans for the new OS will be.
According to a blog post on the Sony site this morning, Sony plans to bring Adroid 5.0 to the entire premium Xperia Z line. That include:
- Xperia Z
- Xperia ZL
- Xperia ZR
- Xperia Tablet Z
- Xperia Z1
- Xperia Z1s (T-Mobile)
- Xperia Z Ultra
- Xperia Z1 Compact
- Xperia Z2
- Xperia Z2 Tablet
- Xperia Z3
- Xperia Z3v
- Xperia Z3 Compact
- Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
The Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition will the first device to see the update. From there they will work toward the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series beginning in 2015.
Timing and availability of those updates will be announced by Sony as they become available and will trickle through specific regions and carriers too. I do have a distinct feeling though that the Xperia Z3 here in the sates will be a pretty hard push for Sony. I certainly hope the carriers play nice and make it happen quickly and without issue. It would boost the carrier images as well as get Sony rolling in the right direction stateside.
