Whether you agree with Wikileaks‘ methodology or not, there is a whole heap of Sony‘s internal documentation floating around the Internet at the moment, which kind of made it easy to come across some new Sony Xperia Z4 images. The images appear to show the Xperia Z4, or “Sony Xperia Fourth Generation”, with metal construction and looking not unlike the Xperia Z3, however the fine print of one of the images says that the metal will be polished metal plating prepared by “anodizing technology”, which should give the Xperia Z4 a slightly different sheen to the Xperia Z3. Check out all the images below:
The other piece of notable information to come from the information dumped by Wikileaks is that a “Xperia flagship” is expected to be launched sometime between April and June 2015, which will undoubtedly be the Xperia Z4. It’s also worth nothing that this same time period should see the release of a new Xperia Z Tablet as well, presumably called the Xperia Z4 Tablet as previous naming conventions would suggest. We’ve heard rumours that April 20th is going to be the day that Sony announces the Xperia Z4, which matches with this new information, but we won’t have long to wait and see if that rumour is true.

It almost feels like the Sony Xperia Z4 has already been released based on the number of leaks it has endured, but we shouldn’t have long to wait for it to be official if the latest round of rumours are to be believed. According to the grapevine, April 20th is the day to circle on the calendar for the Xperia Z4’s announcement and will have an event for it in Sony‘s native Japan.
We’re not expecting much from the Xperia Z4 – design-wise, leaks have pointed to a device that looks exactly the same as the Xperia Z3, but of course that means all the improvements have happened on the inside. We have heard that the Xperia Z4 will have the latest and greatest Snapdragon 810 processor, 4GB RAM as well as either a Full HD or Quad HD display depending on what region variant you get. As has been the case with Sony’s last few releases, the Xperia Z4 isn’t going to set the world on fire with its design, but if you have a soft spot for its design and you want the latest hardware, you probably can’t go wrong with the Xperia Z4.

Latest leaked photos of the Sony Xperia Z4 show us everything from all angles
Sony is expecting a lot from 2015, not least of all selling 38 million devices despite considerable competition on all sides. Spearheading this effort will be the Sony Xperia Z4, Sony’s yet-to-be-announced flagship device that is expected to be made official sometime soon, and as if right on cue, leaks have been appearing on a daily […]

Camera shootout: Galaxy S6 Edge, HTC One M9, iPhone 6 Plus and Xperia Z3

With so many major flagship devices on the market, it can be difficult to tell which handset boasts the best camera of them all. Big players like Samsung, HTC, Apple and Sony tend to pique the interest of many users, so let’s take a look at how each camera performs against one another.
Brought to us by Flickr user Matthew Miller, the photos attached below pit the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, the HTC One M9, the Apple iPhone 6 Plus and the Sony Xperia Z3 against each other. We’ll have a few camera shootouts of our own coming to you soon, but for now, let’s take a look at the images below. Before we get into specific situations, we should get some specifications out of the way. The Galaxy S6 Edge has a 16MP sensor with OIS and an f/1.9 aperture. Samsung decided to ditch its ISOCELL technology it used on the Galaxy S5 in favor of a more conventional sensor. The HTC One M9 has a 20.7MP with no optical image stabilization and an f.2.2 aperture. While HTC decided to move its UltraPixel tech to the front this time around, the lack of OIS and poor low light performance leaves a lot to be desired. Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus has an 8MP sensor, 18mm squared sensor shooting at a 4:3 aspect ratio and an f/2.2 aperture with image stabilization. The iPhone 6 Plus’ camera is known to be one of the best on the market, but perhaps it’s finally feeling the heat from the competition. Finally, the Xperia Z3’s camera has a 20.7MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and no optical image stabilization. In our full review, we praised the camera for its powerful camera, though the software-based image stabilization tech just doesn’t compare to true OIS.
Take a look at the images of the gum-covered wall above. It’s easy to spot that the S6 Edge and iPhone 6 Plus cameras pull out ahead, offering up more true to life colors, while the One M9 and Z3 photos are more washed out. The One M9’s shot is particularly bad in this situation, struggling to capture the correct amount of light.

The flowerpot images are some of the more low light shots in the gallery, and the differences are less stark than the first photo set. The Galaxy S6 Edge and Xperia Z3 offer the brightest shots, but the Z3 struggles with contrast a bit more than the rest. The HTC One M9 has the darkest shot out of the bunch, but the most well-lit areas are spot on in terms of saturation.

As for the last photo set, the four flagship cameras are tested out in a fish market with very low light. The S6 Edge’s photo looks to be much warmer than the others, really bringing out the details in areas with little light. The iPhone 6 Plus also brings out a good amount of detail in these areas while the One M9 and Z3 suffer in low light performance.
These camera samples go to show that megapixels don’t mean everything. Samsung and Apple’s cameras both have the lowest megapixel count, and generally speaking, both performed the best in all of these situations. We will of course have some more camera shootouts for you in the future, but for now, hopefully these sample images help you decide which camera is your favorite. There are quite a few more images posted on Matthew Miller’s Flickr account, so I’d urge you to check those out for some more clarification.
So what did you think? Which camera came out on top?

T-mobile no longer offers Sony Xperia Z3 online

Despite creating beautiful devices, Sony hasn’t seen the growth in mobile that it has hoped for, which has led the Japanese giant to announce its plans to scale back its mobile efforts going forward. There are numerous possible reasons why Sony isn’t in a more dominant position in the mobile market, though lack of presence in North America certainly could play at least a small role.
This situation has been looking a little bit better with the Sony Xperia Z3, which made its way to T-Mobile and to also to Verizon, with the latter carrier offering a special variant dubbed the Z3v. Unfortunately, increased presence hasn’t necessarily translated to increased demand, as evidenced by the fact T-Mobile has now pulled the Xperia Z3 from its online store.
@Serotheo The Z3 is no longer available. Here are our current Sony devices: http://t.co/ijK7q3PuYq *JB
— T-Mobile (@TMobile) April 5, 2015
While there’s no way to say for sure that the uncarrier pulled the phone due to limited demand, we wouldn’t be too surprised. From a slow rollout of Lollipop to limited advertising in the US, the Sony Xperia Z3 just hasn’t made a big enough impression in the states and things aren’t liable to improve with new 2015 flagships like the One M8 and Galaxy S6 surfacing.

On the other hand, the Sony Xperia Z4 is likely just around the corner, with new images leaking today, and so perhaps T-Mobile simply ran low on inventory and decided to wait it out for the Z4 as opposed to working with Sony to secure more stock? Only time will tell for sure.
Alleged leaked images of the Sony Xperia Z4 show very little new information
Sony is expected to be announcing its half yearly flagship refresh in the next month or so with the Sony Xperia Z4, and the rumour mill has been turning. The latest leak actually shows very little new information in terms of overall design, but we do see a bit of information on the screen of the device, namely […]

Sony is “here to stay”, doubles down on Xperia Z3 marketing with global campaign starting today

Sony’s faith in its mobile business seemed to be severely shaken, as the storied Japanese company announced in February that it doesn’t see mobile as a growth area in the following years. But even if all options are on the table (including a sale or spinoff), Sony is not giving up on mobile just yet.
“Sony Mobile is here to say, we are absolutely going to focus on delivering profitable growth,” said this week Catherine Cherry, Sony Mobile director for the UK. In order to drive profitability, Sony is doubling down on marketing, with a new global ad campaign for the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact. The new “#iCan” campaign starts today and focuses on key selling points of the two devices, like water resistance and great low light photo performance.
The campaign, running on TV, billboards, and online, creates an “intentional sense of ambiguity” by alluding that Sony devices give users super powers like “I can see in the dark” or “I can stay awake for days.”
Without disclosing figures, Cherry said that Sony is investing heavily in this new campaign, with total spending matching the Xperia Z3 launch campaign from last autumn.

While marketing is not the miracle drug that will heal Sony’s mobile ailment, it’s encouraging to see the company sending out a signal of stability and confidence. Above all, it’s good to see Sony actually trying to sell its excellent Xperia devices, which can hold their own against any flagship, but are invariably outshone by competitors when it comes to marketing and buzz.
Focusing on upscale devices like the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact is part of Sony’s strategy to shift focus towards the high end of the market in order to increase profits. Another step is to move back to longer release cycles; initially expected at MWC last month, the Xperia Z4’s launch seems to have been pushed back towards autumn.
Released at IFA in September 2014, the Xperia Z3 remains a prime choice, while the Xperia Z3 Compact is still included on our list of best unlocked Android smartphones.

Leaked renders showcase Sony’s upcoming flagship, the Xperia Z4.
With all of the major OEMs announcing their latest flagships, it seems that Sony left us out on the curb. That may change soon though, as famous tech leaker, OnLeaks, recently published some very interesting images. They are renders of what the Sony Xperia Z4 smartphone is slated to look like. As you can see, there are not too many changes made to the overall design from the Sony Xperia Z3.
The most noticeable difference is the lack of the magnetic port that was on the Sony Xperia Z3. Whatever their reasons where for removing it, the device still looks gorgeous. As of now there is no special branding on the device, though I am sure will change when carriers get their hands on it. According to OnLeaks, the Sony Xperia Z4 should come equipped a 5.2 inch display, a Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, an Adreno 430 GPU and finally a 21MP camera.
This is all speculative of course, and should be taken with a grain of salt. We won’t know what the actual device will look like or the specific specs until Sony makes an official announcement. That’s all we know for now but stay tuned in case any more information surfaces.

(Update: Xperia Z2 and some tablets) Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact getting Lollipop update

Update, March 17: Sony has kicked off the rollout for the Xperia Z2, the Xperia Tablet Z3 Compact, and the Xperia Z2 Tablet (Wi-Fi and LTE). As per Xperia Blog, Scandinavian and Baltic countries are getting the updates first. To check if you’re on the list, go to Settings>About phone.
Original post, March 16:
Just as rumored, Sony has finally kicked off the Lollipop upgrade for its Xperia devices, starting with the top of the line: the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact.
Sony has begun updating the Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact in Europe, with the Nordic and Baltic countries getting first dibs. As always, the actual availability of the update for your device will depend on your market, carrier, and specific model.
According to a posting on Sony’s official blog, the Lollipop (Android 5.0.2) update will bring the following enhancements to the software of the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact:
- “Fresh, streamlined looks” based on Material Design that retains Sony’s “minimalistic” approach to UI design
- New card-based notification style and lockscreen
- Multi-user support and guest mode
- Android for Work
- Ability to move apps to and from the microSD card
If you’re curious to see what Sony means by “fresh” and “minimalistic,” folks over at XDA (via Xperia Blog) have secured several screenshots of the new UI:

Sony hasn’t specified it again, but today’s post links to the list published back in October of Xperia Z smartphone and tablets that will get to join the Lollipop club.
If you own a Sony device other than Xperia Z series, you’re probably wondering what Sony has in store for you, and we’re afraid we don’t have any good news on this front. Sony is mum about it, and it looks like that non-Xperia-Z devices will really be left behind.
Sony says updates for more Xperia Z devices will begin rolling out in “around two weeks’ time” so stay tuned for more.
What do you think of Sony’s Lollipop upgrade performance?
