DxO Labs crowns the Sony Xperia Z2 the best in mobile photography, for Now

Sony Xperia Z2 the best in mobile photographyDxO Mark, created by DxO Labs, is a favourite among photography enthusiasts for seeing which mobile devices have the best camera performance on the market. According the latest findings, DxO Mark crowns the Sony Xperia Z2 the best in mobile photography, even beating out Nokia’s latest effort, the PureView-toting Nokia 808. The tests take into account all facets of the camera’s properties including aperture, exposure time, lenses and even focal length; a comprehensive test indeed.

The Xperia Z2, announced at MWC 2014 earlier this year, is Sony‘s answer to the Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8 (which are disappointingly missing from the DxO Mark results) and improves on its stalwart predecessor, the Xperia Z1, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB RAM and a up-sized 5.2-inch Triluminos display. The Xperia Z2 will be the third device (after the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z1 Compact) to boast Sony’s 20.7MP camera, but also adds the ability to take 4K resolution videos.

What do you think of the Sony Xperia Z2′s abilities as a mobile camera device? Have these results swayed your decision-making? Let us know what you think.

Sony Xperia Z2 can be charged wirelessly; Sony to release charging Accessories

Sony Xperia Z2 can be charged wirelesslyWireless charging is always a nice thing to have available for your smartphone, yet it doesn’t seem to be as widely utilized as some of us might like; I love wireless charging, particularly as I can just place my phone on the charging plate without needing to feel around for my charging cable and then plug it in. Sony, however, may be joining the light side with this iteration of its devices as Clove has listed a wireless charging case and wireless charging plate for the Sony Xperia Z2, suggesting that the Sony Xperia Z2 can be charged wirelessly.

While Clove doesn’t have any product images yet, it says that Sony is going to be offering the WCR12 Wireless Charging cover in black and white for £69.99 as well as the WCH10 Charging Plate which is going to go for £54.99. Much like other manufacturer branded accessories, these ones err on the side of expensive, though we’re anticipating that the charging cover is simply going to enable Qi-wireless charging, which will open the door for you to get a much cheaper charging plate.

What do you think about the Sony Xperia Z2 getting the ability to charge wirelessly? Let us know your opinion in the comments.

Sony’s latest device announcement, the Sony Xperia Z2, is a hot topic of a device. It is hard not to take a good hard look at the 20.7MP packing device. As if the camera resolution wasn’t a big enough selling point, the Xperia Z2 also offers a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM and a 3,200 mAh battery.

Sony Xperia Z2 side Phones4u have recently unveiled their on-contract price and pre-order dates for the new Xperia Z2. Those of you in the UK will be able to lock in a Z2 on April 11th for free with a £47 per month charge with Vodafone and EE. The device will launch in traditional black and white, whit the white being exclusive through Phones4u. A purple Z2 will also be available, but will launch for O2.

To get you guys on the hook for the pre-order, they are also offering up a SRS-BTX300 wireless speaker for free. We can’t forget to mention ”exclusive Sony content including games, music and six movies”, and a 50% discount on Smartband accessories too.

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. Anyone over the pond marking their calendar for this one?

System Dump for the Sony Xperia Z2 is now Available

system dump for the sony xperia z2Despite being heavily leaked prior to its announcement at MWC 2014, the Sony Xperia Z2 is somewhat of a surprise release. This is mainly because it is being launched a mere 5 months after its predecessor, the Xperia Z1, was released, and while many people assumed it was rushed out to correct the mishaps of the Xperia Z1, Sony admitted it has had a change in strategy. Specifically, this change is going to likely see 2 flagship devices a year, which means we might even see a Xperia Z3 later in 2014, but that’s another story completely.

While you might think this strategy is a bit of a bummer for early adopters, there is a silver lining, at least for those who like to dabble in development and mucking around with their phones. This silver lining is that while software OS updates will likely come at the same rate, these increased number of new devices means you can update your older device with these updated apps. So when owners of the Xperia Z and Xperia Z1 see that the system dump for the Sony Xperia Z2 is now available, they now have a reason to smile.

If you are a developer and want to get your hands on the system dump, it can be found over at the XDA forums (links will be below) and with any luck, we’ll be seeing custom ROMs and Zperia Z2 apps becoming available in the very near future. The files are for Android 4.4.2, so those of you with Sony devices waiting for your KitKat update may want to keep a close eye on this space.

Are you going to get a Sony Xperia Z2? And what do you make of this increased cycle of two devices a year from one manufacturer? Let us know what you think in the comments.

[Download] Get the Sony Xperia Z2 wallpapers here now!

Sony Xperia Z2 wallpapersWe’re in a very wallpaper mood here today at AndroidSPIN. The Samsung Galaxy S5 wasn’t the only flagship device to be announced at MWC 2014 earlier this week; Sony also announced their Sony Xperia Z2 device which replaces their previous flagship, the Xperia Z1 after only 5 months at the top of the roost. The new flagship boasts an updated Snapdragon 801 processor, a larger 5.2-inch display, and crucially, the Triluminos display has been tweaked to address all the viewing angle issues that were reported on the Xperia Z1.

Sony Xperia Z2 wallpapersWhile many people liked the wallpaper that they saw on the Galaxy S5 at its announcement, less noise was made for the Xperia Z2, despite the fact that the Sony Xperia Z2 wallpapers also happen to be quite beautiful; while they haven’t deviated much from Sony’s standard artistic flavour, these wallpapers will be standard on Sony’s Android KitKat builds when it finally rolls out to all its devices, and they really do make for some nice backdrops. Thanks to XperiaGuide, we have access to the full collection of wallpapers that will be on the Xperia Z2 when it launches; download the collection from the link below:

Sony kills off pre-installed anti-shatter films on Xperia Z2 and Z2 Tablet

When I picked up my Sony Xperia Z at T-Mobile a number of months ago the very first thing I noticed was the pre-installed screen protector. In the beginning it wasn’t such a big deal, then it started to scratch up and the clarity of the screen started to dip. Oddly enough, the Xperia Z used Gorilla Glass, so the anti-shatter film, while a nice idea, wasn’t really all that important. It took me all of a minute to peel it off slowly, both on the front and the back. The only difference afterwards was the front lost the SONY logo. Why on earth that was stuck under the film is beyond me as none of the T-Mobile branding on the Xperia branding on the back was.

Regardless, the anti-shatter film isn’t the greatest and slowly, but surely, starts to make the phone look less spectacular. Once removed though, it was like a whole new device again. Even though the glass underneath had been hidden from the real world since its construction and had a funny feeling. Simple solution was an install of a tempered glass screen protector. More so for the smooth feel of its face than protection.

Sony has been pre-installing these anit-shatter films in the factory during manufacturing and plenty of people don’t even know they are there. Sony seems to be listening, and sub-sequentially, watching, all the people peeling them off and have changed their tune. In a meeting at MWC today, Sony confirmed to AndroidCentral that the anti-shatter films will NOT be pre-installed on the Xperia Z2 or Tablet Z2.

Anyone looking to get the next iteration of Xperia device won’t have to worry about voiding the warranty peeling off the film. Of course if you root and hack and ROM, that is a different story. Any current Xperia owners out there also peel that film off nearly immediately?
