AT&T posted up a new bit of information about an update that is being pushed out to their LG G3. The AT&T G3 picked up Android 5.0 Lollipop back in February, and unfortunately this isn’t a push for anything over the current Android 5.0.1 update that it received. Instead, this update is turning VoLTE (Voice over LTE) on.
VoLTE is a welcoming addition to the device, however it is what else the update brings to last years flagship that might leave some with puzzled faces. Along with HD voice, you will also find that Uber will now be in your app list. For the uninitiated, Uber is the associate app to get rides from people in over 50 countries across the globe. It is like a taxi service, but provided by average people with average cars. You will also find another new app installed to your device from AT&T in the form of AT&T Mail. This app is another free app in the Play Store that you could easily get your hands on if you happen to have/use an AT&T or Yahoo email address.
The update is being pushed out in the traditional over-the-air style offering. This means it will probably land in stages, requires over 50% battery life, a solid Wi-Fi connection and some time to kill for it to download and install. AT&T lists the update as weighing in between 172 and 768MBs. The variance is probably to offset for those devices that still haven’t gone through with the Lollipop update.

Google’s Nexus 9 tablet getting Android 5.1 OTA today

The Nexus 9 tablet was a bit behind in the update process, which is odd since Google is pretty stellar at getting the latest iteration of Android to the lineup. Obviously the Nexus has been sitting comfortably in the forefront of updates, but previous Nexus 7 devices were getting the update to Android 5.1 while the newest Nexus 9 was kind of the stepchild of the group. It wasn’t the end all be all that some portrayed it to be and for those that were throwing fits about not being update can grab a drink and finally relax as the update has been announced today.
Starting today, #AndroidLollipop update 5.1 will be rolling out to a #Nexus9 near you. pic.twitter.com/oxOvrujzmB

The announcement tweet does leave off if it is 5.1 or 5.1.1. I am sure as soon as the update starts hitting devices we will get the version number. It is also possible that if it isn’t 5.1.1, that it will be right around the corner too.

Chrome add-on helps you see the web if you’re color-blind
The web isn’t always a great a place to visit if you’re color-blind — in fact, you may not properly see the Chrome logo above. Thankfully, Google may have a way to fill in some of that missing picture. It recently released a Chrome extension, Color Enhancer, that tweaks the browser’s colors to help overcome partial color blindness. All you do is walk through a basic calibration process, and the add-on does the rest. This isn’t the most complicated addition in the world, but it could make a big difference if it helps you spot web objects that would otherwise go unnoticed.

Apple is crawling the web to help your Siri and Spotlight searches
Apple doesn’t have to rely solely on outside web providers like Google or Microsoft to fuel your iOS and Mac searches. The company has confirmed the rumored existence of Applebot, a web crawler that collects site information for the sake of Siri and Spotlight queries. It behaves much like Google’s crawler, looking for the familiar “robots.txt” file that tells it what results to exclude on a given site; it’ll follow typical Google instructions if there isn’t any Apple-specific rule set. It’s not clear how long Cupertino has been running its bot, or whether there’s anything more in the works. However, it’s evident that Apple wants its online searches to work no matter what its partnerships look like in the future.

Black sheep: The Android 5.0.2 update for the Nexus 9 dropped today, 5.1.1 nowhere in sight

When we learned last month that Google’s Nexus division wasn’t doing terribly great financially mostly due to the Nexus 6, we were intrigued that there was no mention of the Nexus 9 at all. Maybe it’s actually selling quite well, but there would be one gripe of owners who have bought the device thinking they would be on the forefront of Android software – the fact that the Nexus 9 doesn’t actually have the latest version of Android. In fact, the Android 5.0.2 update for the Nexus 9 has only just dropped today, a few days after the factory images for Android 5.1.1 for much older Nexus devices were put up on Google‘s developer site.
Maybe we’ll never know why the Nexus 9 is currently the black sheep in the Nexus family – maybe it’s the new NVIDIA chipset – but it can’t be heartening that even the Nexus 10 has the latest version of Android Lollipop on it. Whatever the actual story is, we hope that the Nexus 9 catches up soon before it becomes *that* Nexus devices that everybody has forgotten about.

Apple TV channel lineup expands with CBS Sports and USA Now
All signs point to a completely revamped Apple TV being in the works. For now, however, the growth of the platform doesn’t appear to be slowing down — even as new hardware and software loom on the horizon. Today, CBS Sports and USA Now launched their on-demand streaming channels on Apple TV, bringing even more entertainment content to owners of the $69 set-top box. While neither channel offers access to live shows, there’s still plenty to watch from both networks, including full episodes and a robust set of shorter length videos. If you’re in the US, you should see these on your Apple TV’s home screen now — otherwise they will be showing up soon.

Of all the phone manufacturers, Sony has been one of the most consistent with releasing updates for its aging devices. The Sony Xperia Z, the first of its Xperia Z devices, is yet to get its long awaited Android Lollipop update, but has been confirmed to be getting it almost as long as the software has been out in the wild. And for owners anxiously waiting for that day, you’ll be delighted to know that Android Lollipop for the Sony Xperia Z will be ready as early as next week after Sony Philippines dropped the news today.
@JVNML13 sorry please disregard our tweet before, Lollipop update for Xperia Z will start rolling out by next week
— Sony Philippines (@SonyPHinc) May 4, 2015
Of course, don’t necessarily be expecting that Android 5.0 will magically appear on your device by the end of the week – there will likely be a delay for the update to reach your device, wherever you are in the world – but it shouldn’t be long after that the update will be available. If we’re not mistaken, that will make the Xperia Z the oldest device to get a official software update, for now anyway.

Under Armour’s MyFitnessPal goes premium for fitness fanatics
Roughly three months ago Under Armour snatched up Endomondo and MyFitnessPal for about half a billion bucks. Now the sports apparel company is looking for a return on its investment by rolling out the first paid-for premium version of MyFitnessPal. This is no casual tracking service, to be clear — this is meant for serious fitness buffs. For either $10 a month or $50 a year users can build custom nutrition reports and dig through the minutia of their health data without being bothered by ads.
MyFitnessPal Premium, tempts you with access to priority customer support, exclusive content like recipes design by dietitians, and the lack of ads, but it’s really the granular data tracking thats the draw. Your calorie and nutrition goals can differ based on the day of the week. There’s also custom homescreens that put things like carb or salt intake right up front if you’re have a specific goal like lowering your blood pressure or carbo loading ahead of a big race. You can even quickly see which foods are contributing the most sugar to your diet in case you need to cut back.
The move from helping people lose weight and count calories, to helping people cut that last ounce of body fat off their emerging six-pack is an important and obvious one. Under Armour isn’t interested in tracking what antibiotics you’re allergic to or how much sleep you’re getting (or not getting). This is a company built on high-performance and high-endurance athletics and its moves into the tech space need to reflect that. So, while Endomondo and MyFitnessPal will probably maintain their appeal to the casual runner and health nut, expect them to also roll out features in the next couple of months that will help people train for their next big fight or ultra marathon as well.

If you were worried about your Samsung Galaxy Note Edge on T-Mobile getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, you can cool your jets. Today T-Mobile posted on their support page for the device that Lollipop, Android 5.0.2 to be more specific, is on its way out to users across the US. The build number you will be looking for is N915TUVU1COD7. It will bring all the Lollipop goodness that your fellow Note 4 friends have enjoyed for the last week or so, including Wi-Fi Passport. Which allows you to use Wi-Fi calling on any open Wi-Fi network and all networks you have access to. T-Mobile doesn’t list any apps being added or removed nor do they spout off the new fluid animations, privacy mode, lockscreen notifications or other awesome aspects of the new OS.
Per the norm, you need over 50% battery life on your device, a solid Wi-Fi connection and some time for the 1.1GB file to download and install to your Note Edge. If pulling down isn’t your cup of tea, then you can always plug your device into a PC and open up Samsung Kies and push it through that way.
