Fujifilm’s X-T1 camera is getting a revamped autofocus system

A notable firmware update is coming to the X-T1 and X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition in June, Fujifilm has announced. With this new version, 4.0, both sleek cameras will welcome a vastly enhanced autofocus system and other under-the-hood upgrades — all of which are expected to improve performance by a long shot. The new Zone and Wide Tracking modes, for one, are said to make it easier to capture moving subjects, while the AF’s accuracy has been tuned to focus faster in low-light conditions and on low-contrast items. There’s now also Eye Detection autofocus, Auto Macro mode, Exposure Compensation control for manual users and, when shooting video, an optimized algorithm that promises to deliver a more natural and smooth AF. You’ll have to wait a few weeks for the overhauled software, unfortunately — Fujifilm says it’s due to arrive late next month. But at least you know it is, indeed, coming.

Google adds pre-registration and alerts for Android apps

Starting with Glu’s Terminator Genisys: Revolution mobile game, you can now pre-register for apps from the Play store. Now if a developer wants to drum up some interest before an app release, they can stick a placeholder page in the store where users can sign up and receive an alert on their phone when the app is actually released. This is obviously handy for users, but it can also help devs gauge interest in their apps before they’re released.

Android Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 might be coming after all, to select markets

We’ve been getting a few mixed messages about whether or not Android Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is going to become a reality, but we might have a slightly more solid answer today. Thanks to the Twitter account of Samsung Danmark (not a typo, “Danmark” is Danish for “Denmark”), we know that the Lollipop update for the Note 2 is said to be coming to devices in that region, and confirmed that the roll-out would vary region to region. This makes sense given that Samsung Gulf said the Note 2 update to Lollipop wouldn’t be happening – they must have meant it is not happening there.

For everyone else hoping that their Note 2 will get the update, this will be a nervous time wondering if your device is going to get the goods. Our advice: hit up your respective Samsung branch and see if you can’t get some information out of them. And feel free to drop us a line if you find anything out.

What do you think about Android Lollipop for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Facebook is using your Instagram feed to suggest new friends

Notice some familiar faces popping up in Facebook’s “People You May Know” section? Well, there’s a reason for that. Zuckerberg & Co. recently began serving up suggestions for prospective connections based on your Instagram feed. It’s no surprise that Facebook would pull data from the filter-driven app, especially from folks who’ve linked the two — it does own the photo software after all. And as we’ve heard a few times before, Facebook likes its apps to share info. Of course, if you’re like me, you use the two social networks for entirely different reasons (food pics and keeping up with old pals, natch). Facebook confirmed that it “recently” began pulling data from Instagram based on who you follow, but wasn’t too keen on elaborating further.

Motorola begins soak test for Android 5.1 on the Moto X (2nd Gen) with new ‘Chop’ gesture

Motorola has announced this morning that they are starting soak test for the Moto X (2nd Gen) with Android 5.1 Lollipop. The soak test is being conducted in select regions of Brazil based on select retail partners. So those of you in the states shouldn’t get overly excited just yet. However, Motorola does mention that they have been putting the update through carrier and regional testing in other countries as well. Assuming everything goes smoothly we should see the update hit various carrier branded and unlocked variants in the near future.

While the update is good news, there is something else that will be included in the push, a new gesture. Most Moto X owners or users know that a simple double twist will activate the devices camera or waving once to silence the device.  When Android 5.1 lands on your device you will see a new double ‘chop’ gesture that will active the devices flashlight function. Doing it a second time will shut it off of course. Not a HUGE deal, but something that does make like a little easier for people.

The animated GIF they provided shows how it works when in the hands of the light blue man group. As the update moves along and starts making its way to consumers I will be sure to let you guys know.

Want delivery? Google’s search results can now facilitate your order taking needs

Google Now, Google Search, Google App, whatever you call it, becomes more and more robust each and every day. I thought it was pretty cool to be able to just search for things with my voice. Now we can set reminders, alarms, send texts, place calls, start music, turn things on and off and so much more. Now you can add one more thing to the list that the Google can do to help you out a bit when you are beat, get a delivery order placed.

GoogleWell, not entirely. You can’t just say, “OK Google, I want a large pepperoni pizza delivered to my home.” Although, I am sure we are not far off from that being an option in the near future. In its current stage you can search out a restaurant and if it offers delivery service you will be able to tap on “Place an order.” From there you be able to place the order through one of the six providers that are available; Seamless, Grubhub, Eat24, Delivery.com, BeyondMenu and MyPizza.com. I’ll take it. However, it will be infinitely cooler in my other scenario, especially if it automatically charges to your Google Wallet card.

Android 5.0.2 Lollipop headed out to the Dell Venue 8 tablet

The Dell Venue 8 tablet was a remarkable surprise to many, including myself. The Intel processor keeps the battery alive for an exceptional amount of time and it packs enough power to keep your tablet needs moving. It also packed a three camera array on the rear that lead to some cool depth of field photography and editing abilities. While the cameras were present, the software that gave it the options came out a short time after the tablets launch. The drawback to the tablet was that it launched with Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Not the end of the world, but it was new enough that Lollipop could have been an option. The good news though is that Dell is now pushing Android 5.0.2 Lollipop to the device.

Dell Venue 8Droid-Life is reporting that the update it encrypted the device which took a few minutes. After installation and boot you will find the tablet is encrypted, but we aren’t exactly sure why it is a necessary step. My best guess would be in regards to the depth of field camera software, but anything is possible. Like all other Lollipop updates you will get the lockscreen notifications, the fancy and fluid animations and bold colors.

Anyone out there own a Dell Venue 8 tablet seeing the update today? If you don’t head into settings and give it a ping to see what happens.

Android 5.0 Lollipop now rolling out to Sprint Galaxy S4

Samsung has certainly done a fairly good job of turning their update image around over the last few months. I remember a time when updates to anything over a year old was a pipe dream and if it did land, it would be for the international variant. Now we are seeing a near weekly push from one carrier or another to one device or another that is putting Android 5.0 Lollipop in the hands of consumers. Today we see word on the Sprint support page for the Samsung Galaxy S4 in regards to updating to Android 5.0 Lollipop.

Sprint is a little caddy about what all is included though. We have seen Verizon start pushing Lyft into updates while AT&T is pushing Uber in. Sprints last update to the Galaxy S4 was back in July of 2014 and brought along the HD Voice icon and some Google security patches. With the Lollipop update that is all they list in the description section. Not that it is a bad thing if they just handed over Android 5.0, but I am sure there are apps removed, things fixed and possibly new things included.

If you are still sporting a stock Samsung Galaxy S4 on the Now Network, then be on the lookout for a software update. It will be rolling out in stages as usual, but you can always head into Settings > More > System Update > Update Samsung Software > Check Now. Undoubtedly you will need well over 50% battery life, a solid Wi-Fi connection and plenty of time to kill for the file to download and install. Previous updates on other carriers seemed to land around 1GB. In the end, you should end up Android 5.0 Lollipop with version number L720VPUGOD2.

‘SimCity’ creator Will Wright launches social networking app

Will Wright, creator of the incredibly popular SimCity, Sims and the slightly less popular Spore franchises, is back with something new and completely different, a social networking app. The Thred app for iOS is a slideshow builder with options to add stickers, filters, words and even external links to images. The finished “threds” can be shared in-app and to Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr. If you’re in need of additional images, you can search for images in-app to add to your visual story.

To build those stories, the app has a few nice touches to make the process simple. When you’re building your own thred you can either scour your photo roll for images or take the simpler route and use the in-app calendar to select images from a date. From there it’s just a matter of adding a sticker and maybe some text to each photo to help you tell a story. When manipulating your photos, the first couple of image filters are pretty much like every other image filter in every other photo app. But then the filters take a hard left turn onto Cheesy Filter Avenue with effects that attempt to make images resemble comics and sketches. They’re bad and you should do your best to avoid them at all cost.

Besides horrible filters, another weird issue is how difficult it is to add friends. Yes it’s a social app, but even though you can create an account with Facebook login, you have to manually search for friends. It doesn’t auto-populate the add friends section with your Facebook friends that use the app. You can invite friends via email. But who checks their email for app invites? And more importantly, what sort of monster invites friends to an app via email?

Friend-adding weirdness aside, building and sharing a thred is fun because the app doesn’t try to throw too many features at you like fine tuning an image or adjusting the kerning of a font. With a few taps you can share your trip to Hawaii or show everyone how to correctly cook a steak. Adding the ability to add links to images could be the feature that makes the app the darling of social media professionals and photographers. An image with a link is way better than a static image that offers zero calls to action. But mostly, people will probably use it to create comics of their cats.

Goat Simulator, CounterSpy and Monument Valley on sale right now

The weekend is fast approaching for many folks out there and that might mean lots of plans with the family, or working on the honey do list. Either way, a person needs a break every once in while and entertaining games can usually help out with that immensely. While the Play Store offers an ever growing list of free games, the paid games sometimes tend to be a bit exciting. If you are looking for a gaming deal today then I have a few titles you might be interested in snagging up.

First up is Goat Simulator. Yes, it is a thing and it is pretty popular too. In a nut shell you get to be a goat and be out of control all the time. Coffee Stain Studios just released Goat Simulator GoatZ which takes things to the zombie side of things too. If you have been dreaming of being a goat your whole life, then this is a must have. If you just like lunacy and laughing, then it is also probably the game for you. Goat Simulator usually sells at $4.99 but can be had for a limited time price of $1.99.

CounterSPy

If being a goat in your spare time isn’t your thing maybe you have dreams of being a spy. That is where another great title from PlayStation Mobile could help out a bit with CounterSpy. Like any good spy game, you are trying to stop a crazed superpower from launching nuclear missiles. A side perk tot he title is that it cross syncs your gaming data with your PlayStations 4, PlayStations 3 and PlayStation Vita. Sony doesn’t say if this is a limited time sale or a permanent price tag. Considering it only has 5,000 – 10,000 downloads since its launch in September of last year, I am thinking it could be more of a permanent price tag. The regular starting price was $4.99, but you can get in on the cold war espionage action now for $0.99.

Monument Valley main

One final game that seems to always be worth grabbing, especially when on sale, is Monument Valley. The title brings some stunning puzzles where you manipulate impossible architectures to help guide a silent princess through each world. Some people loved it while others hated it. The titles normal price tag comes in at $3.99, but is on sale now for $0.99.

Feel free to hit any of the links below to snag the titles while they are on sale.
