Android Wear 5.1.1 for the LG G Watch and LG G Watch R are rolling out from today

We heard last week that Android Wear 5.1.1 was starting to be rolled out, first with the ASUS ZenWatch. Of course, the LG Watch Urbane was the first watch to have this latest build of Android Wear, but all other Android Wear devices have had to wait around patiently, until now. Next on the list of updates is Android Wear 5.1.1 for the LG G Watch and LG G Watch R, who has been confirmed to have started receiving the update as of today.

Android Wear 5.1.1 for the LG G Watch and LG G Watch RFor those wondering why their Sony SmartWatch 3, Moto 360 or Samsung Gear Live have yet to get the update, this is because the LG G Watch, LG G Watch R and ASUS ZenWatch all do not possess Wi-Fi functionality (which the other devices do) meaning their version would have been easier to develop – we’re not expecting too much more of a delay before Android Wear 5.1.1 is rolled out to the rest of the devices. For those of you who do have a LG G Watch or LG G Watch R, if you aren’t seeing the update today, don’t panic – as is commonplace with Android updates, they are staged and could take a few days before they reach your device.

Do you have a LG G Watch or LG G Watch R and have the update? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

Samsung’s cross-device sharing app arrives on Google Play

Last November, Samsung introduced Flow, which lets users seamlessly share activities between devices. (Yes, much like Apple does with Continuity.) And while the software still isn’t fully baked, the South Korean company is now letting people give it a try — so long as they have compatible Android hardware. The beta application, available on Google Play, offers a taste of what Flow can do, like allowing you to start reading an article on your smartphone, pause it and pick up where you left off on, say, a tablet. Flow Beta is only available to some Galaxy devices at the moment, and Samsung’s encouraging developers to make their apps compatible with its new feature as soon as possible.

Here’s what you need to have:

  • Galaxy S5, S6 and S6 Edge
  • Galaxy Alpha
  • Note 4 and Note Edge
  • Galaxy Tab S

Google Search on mobile picks up real-time Tweet searching from Twitter

Earlier today Twitter made an announcement that they have teamed up with Google to help make your Twitter searching a bit easier. The search giant and the 140 character social network now brings you real-time tweets to Google search results on mobile devices, both iOS and Android, made through the Google App and mobile web. Like most cool news that involves Google, the new feature is only landing in the U.S. for now and only if you are searching in English. Pretty specific really.

For example, if you’re interested in hearing more from Taylor Swift, a quick search on Google will pull up her most recent Tweets. Or, if you’re a TV buff, a search for #MadMen will bring up the most relevant news and Tweets about Sunday’s series finale.

Once you catch the Tweet you are interested in you can tap on it and head straight into twitter to do the usual twittery things like retweet and favorite.

The news announcement post does say that a desktop web version is coming shortly and that they have plans to bring it to more countries in the coming months.

Chrome add-on shares your web links through sound bursts

Google Tone

If Google has its way, the days of sharing web links through copying text (or bumping devices) will soon be over. The internet giant has released Google Tone, an “experimental” Chrome extension that shares your browser’s current web address to other computers through specially crafted sound bursts. So long as the recipients are within microphone range and use Tone, they don’t have to lift a finger — their machines will pick up the audio cue and start surfing. There are a lot of variables that could sour your experience (don’t try this in a noisy room, folks), but this could still be ideal if you just have to send cat videos to everyone within earshot.

Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint beta testing for Android phones now open

<ins class="adsbygoogle"

Microsoft has released a beta program this morning that brings the usual suite of office apps to your Android smartphone. Before the beta testing the apps were only available for Android based tablets, not phones. Now Microsoft is scaling the apps to be usable on all our beloved devices. In doing so the apps listing in the Play Store have now dropped the “for tablet” listing and are just the apps traditional name.

However, one can not simply install the app to your phone via the Play Store. Rather you will need to join the Microsoft Office for Android community and become a tester. Once in you will be able to grab the beta versions of each app to utilize. The company just pushed this information out at 8:20 a.m. this morning so there is likely going to be a few hours where things haven’t fully propagated through to let you access them. The original G+ post reflects some having access to Word, but not to Excel and Powerpoint just yet.

Head on over to the Microsoft Office for Android community and get signed up to be a tester when you get a chance. The same post will also link you to the beta test versions of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Microsoft reveals Office preview for Android smartphones

Microsoft has been enthusiastically rolling out touch-friendly Android (and iOS) versions of Office, even before it launches on its own OS. It just outed a preview version for Android smartphones, although this time, Windows did get it first. As with the tablet version, Microsoft said the apps marry the “familiar look, feel and quality of Office” apps — including Word, Excel and PowerPoint — to a touch-friendly smartphone experience. You’ll be able to open documents not only from Redmond’s OneDrive, but also via Google Drive, Dropbox, and a few other cloud services.

To get on board with the preview, you’ll need a device with at least KitKat 4.4.x and 1GB or more of RAM, and then to jump through a few hoops. Namely, you’ll need to join Microsoft Office for Android’s Google+ community then sign up to become a tester for each of the three apps. You’ll have to wait a few hours, then sign in with a Microsoft account to save any files. From there, you can easily create tiny little charts and documents, assuming the Android app is as good as the iPhone version. Microsoft hasn’t shared exactly when it’ll come out of beta, though you’ll need an Office 365 subscription to make full use of it when it does.

MixRadio’s music-streaming app heads to iOS and Android

Nokia MixRadio Launch Event

After a long exclusive spell on Windows Phone, MixRadio is finally expanding outside of Redmond’s mobile platform. The music-streaming service, which Microsoft sold to messaging company Line last year, announced today that its app will be available on iOS and Android starting today. MixRadio’s main feature is serving up personalized playlists to listeners, across hundreds of genre- and artist-based channels, slightly similar to what Pandora does. Interestingly enough, the service has also revealed a partnership with HTC; what this means is you’ll start seeing MixRadio curate stories for BlinkFeed, the smartphone maker’s customizable news stream.

RealNetworks’ next app makes sense of your photos and videos

The company that gave us RealPlayer is now targeting something else entirely: All of the media that we take that never sees the light of day. RealTimes, the next flagship app from RealNetworks, automatically backs up your photos and videos into the cloud and sorts them into easily shareable montages. Because if you’re like most, you probably end up shooting plenty more media than you know what to do with. That’s especially the case with parents, a demographic that RealNetworks is determined to crack. The app, which is available for iOS, Android, Windows PCs, Roku devices and Chromecast, automatically chooses the best photos and video selections for its montages. Your montages can also feature soundtracks based on built-in tracks or your own tunes. You can store up to 2GB of media and create 30 second montages for free, or pay $5 a month for 25GB more storage and longer montages, or $10 a month for completely unlimited storage.

RealTimes is basically an evolution of the company’s last major product, RealPlayer Cloud, which was focused entirely on getting your videos into the cloud and viewable across multiple devices. While that app managed to snag 11.5 million users since debuting in 2013, RealNetworks found that most people were only using it once or twice a month. So for its next project, it wanted to created something that you’d use several times a week, RealNetworks CEO and founder Rob Glaser told us.

There are, of course, plenty of other apps and services trying to do something similar to RealTimes. Google+ automatically stores and organizes your photos, and HTC has been pursuing photo and video montages with its Zoe app. But RealTimes could still be compelling to people given its wide device support, as well as the fact that it’s building on everything the company learned with RealPlayer Cloud. For example, you can watch media remotely from any of your devices connected to RealTimes.

“if a startup says we’re going to hold your memories forever you don’t know how long that’ll be,” Glaser said in reference to Everpix, a now defunct photo startup that also tried to backup all of your photos. “As a 20 year old company think people know we’ll be in it for the long haul.”

One thing’s for sure, our desire to capture our daily lives through photos and videos isn’t slowing down anytime soon. So while media management solutions may seem niche at the moment, eventually they’re something more consumers will need. It’s too early to tell if RealTimes will end up being the ideal tool for sorting and sharing our media, but it’s certainly worth keeping an eye on.

The internet’s biggest TV pirate calls it quits after scam

If you enjoy getting the latest TV shows from EZTV, you may want to stop that now, and not just because it’s illegal. It’s also more risky, because the hugely popular torrent site is now in the hands of potentially bad actors, according to TorrentFreak. Former staffers said that EZTV’s founder “NovaKing” was the victim of a hostile takeover by a for-profit group, following a series of wacky (and ironic) events. The problems started when Italy’s .IT registry suspended the original site’s domain name, and what followed was something out of a high-tech Kafka novel.

First, the “EZTV.it” domain was gobbled up for “five figures” by a third party, using the same company name (EZCloud) under which NovaKing had originally registered EZTV. That party then proceeded to strip all references to the original site, which had relocated to the .CH domain in the meantime — while the new owners tried to get the original site to play along. Using a fake name, faux-EZTV managed to seize the original .SE domain held by the EuroDNS registrar, despite NovaKing’s attempt to block the move. From there, the rogue “EZCloud” was able to reset various EZTV services and passwords and take control of every domain, eventually including EZTV.ch.

If this site tells you not to go to somewhere, we’d listen

Though EZTV’s servers apparently weren’t compromised, a staffer said NovaKing was distraught by the attack and decided to walk away from his “non-profit” labor of love. The purloined EZTV sites continue to operate using new, non-EZTV torrents (complete with ads and pop-unders) while the operators claim that all is still well. However, other torrent sites like Pirate Bay and KickAss torrents have severed ties, and TPB is even warning users to “stay away” from EZTV.ch. And if a site where you go to get “internet herpes,” (as my colleague put it), tells you to stay away, we’d advise you to listen. After all, there are plenty of similar sites and of course, lots of legal options.

Hey Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 owners on T-Mobile, you have a OTA on the way. The network has listed that the tablet is being updated to Android 5.0.2 as of today which moves it off Android 4.4.4 KitKat up to the beloved Lollipop. Sadly, T-Mobile was a little late to the game on this update as the Wi-Fi variant saw the update a few months back and AT&T pushed it out last week, not to mention they were extremely bashful in listing any improvements in the update.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 Android 5.0 Lollipop

The baseband you will be looking for T807TUVU1BOE1 and should be starting make its appearance across devices. Feel free to bounce into settings and check for updates at your leisure. Be warned though, you will need well over 50% battery life, a solid Wi-Fi connection and some time to hangout for the 1.1GB update file to download and install. You will also need at least 3GB’s of free space to get he update going and be prepared to lose approximately 950MB’s of usable storage after it is done.
