Microsoft WiFi could be another reason to get Office 365

Microsoft WiFi

Although Microsoft already offers millions of WiFi access points around the world through Skype, it appears the company has bigger plans for its wireless internet service. If a new (barebones) website is to be believed, the Skype branding could be dropped in favor of a new platform called Microsoft WiFi. According to the site, the service will increase the number of hotspots from around 2 million to 10 million and make them available to Office 365 Enterprise subscribers and those who have bought a Surface 2 or Microsoft’s Work & Play Bundle.

Although the website has yet to officially launch, Microsoft has already provided an interactive map detailing where million of its access points are located. Boingo, Xfinity WiFi and Gowex hotspots are prominent in the US, while access points from BT and The Cloud are available in the UK. There’s no word on how you pay for Microsoft WiFi, or whether you need to given that Skype minutes are already included in other Office 365 packages, but the company is continuing to take a multi-platform approach with its apps. It’ll support Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, automatically connecting you to a pre-vetted WiFi hotspot when you’re in range, regardless of who operates it.

Microsoft buys the company behind to-do app Wunderlist

Wunderlist on a Moto X

Microsoft’s quest to conquer the mobile productivity app world by acquiring it is still underway, it seems. A Wall Street Journal source claims that the folks in Redmond have bought 6Wunderkinder, better known as the creator of the to-do app Wunderlist. Neither company is commenting on the scoop at the moment, but the deal is reportedly worth between $100 million to $200 million. The question, of course, is what Microsoft will do with its new prize. The company turned Acompli into the new versions of Outlook for Android and iOS, but it hasn’t done much yet with Sunrise’s calendar app. Given how handy to-do lists can be when paired with email and schedules, our money’s on Outlook and similar apps eventually doing a better job of juggling your daily tasks.

As any gamer knows, we are just a few short days away from the beginning of the massive Steam summer sales event that is sure to bolster plenty of gamers libraries with games they may never play. That never stops us from picking up titles die the amount of savings we see bundled with the purchase. The Humble Mobile Bundle is another avenue that often delivers a diverse set of games, except they are solely for our Android devices. The latest bundle has been released and offers a few titles you might recognize like Worms 3 or Twisty Hollow. The way the Humble Mobile Bundle works, and all bundles really, is you choose how much you want to pay and where the money goes. In the case, a portion can go to the developers, the Electronic Frontier Foundation or Worldreader.

As with all bundles, if you pay a bit more than the current average then you get access to some of the unlocked titles. The current average at the time of writing this was $3.06. To put that into perspective, Worms 3 is $4.99 in the Play Store. So for less than one title you are able to pick up 6. It doesn’t stop there though. If you do pay over the average to gain the extra titles, then when additional titles are added you automatically are given access to them too. It is a pretty sweet deal and can be pretty fun to see what else makes its way in over the next 2 weeks.

Head over to the Humble Mobile Bundle 13 and get your purchase in before the average climbs too much.

Apple’s new music service will reportedly cost $10 a month

Apple Hosts Annual Worldwide Developers Conference

Rumors that Apple is going to debut its retooled music offering at WWDC next week are nothing new. However, in a report by The Wall Street Journal comes word that the streaming service will be priced at $10 a month when it’s announced in a matter of days. That would put the unlimited Beats Music/iTunes listening option right in line with Spotify, Rdio and Tidal in terms of pricing. Previous reports indicated that Apple thought Beats’ price was too high, but it seems knocking a few dollars off of the monthly subscription may not be part of the strategy to lure new users.

What’s more, that free tier we’ve heard about won’t be and all-you-can-eat buffet like Spotify’s. Instead, the folks in Cupertino will serve up ad-supported internet radio that’s run by real DJs at no cost. And it seems Dr. Dre, Q-Tip and Drake are part of the talent Tim Cook & Co. plans to put on air as hosts. With a new option that’s reportedly not unlike broadcast stations, Apple will take another stab at internet radio after its first foray didn’t take off. WSJ also notes that the company has locked in licensing deals with Universal Music, Sony and Warner Bros — three of the biggest labels in the industry. We’ll have to wait to hear whether or not the subscription tier will provide exclusive content and releases like Tidal. If you’ll recall, Taylor Swift, Florence and The Machine and others were rumored to be part of Apple’s exclusive push. Either way, we should have all the details early next week.

Lego’s ‘Minecraft’ competitor is real and ready to download

Lego Worlds

Yes, those rumors of Lego building a direct competitor to Minecraft were true: meet Lego Worlds. The sandbox game has launched on Windows through Steam’s Early Access program for $17, and promises to do more than just let you sculpt buildings and fight off critters. You can alter the terrain on a large scale, and access ready-made drivable vehicles (including dragons) to get around the procedurally generated landscape. Not too surprisingly, there’s also a big tie-in with Lego’s real-world plastic bricks. You can play using a handful of old-school and current Lego sets, and more are promised down the road. Don’t be surprised if you’re eventually buying digital blocks at the same time as their physical counterparts arrive.

This less-than-finished version doesn’t have much in the way of sets, and it’s missing a few features that Minecraft veterans would take for granted. Multiplayer won’t arrive until a future update, for one thing, so you won’t be building masterpieces with a friend’s help. Still, Worlds is likely the game you were always expecting Lego to make in response to Mojang’s smash hit — it’s not just an obvious promo piece like those Lego Minecraft kits that shipped a couple of years back. If you’ve been jonesing for a different take on construction games, you’ll probably want to give this a try.

Internet pictures can hide code that leaves you open to hacks

A pirate cat, because internet

You might want to be more cautious the next time you click on an internet image link sent by a stranger — much like the pirate cat photo you see above, that adorable picture could be hiding something sinister. Security researcher Saumil Shah has developed a security exploit that uses steganography to slip malicious JavaScript code into an image file. If you happen to view the picture in a vulnerable web browser, it opens the door to installing malware or directly hijacking your computer. And this sort of attack is definitely usable in the real world, as Motherboard found out first-hand.

The good news? The exploit only works under certain conditions. You have to upload an image without a file extension (verboten at services like Dropbox), and any site that modifies the image (such as Facebook or Google Photos) will neuter any hostile code. Still, you won’t be completely safe unless browser makers patch up. Your best solution until then is to peek solely at pictures from people and sites you trust.

It’s been a pretty messy year of software updates and plenty of people are left wondering when their Android Lollipop fix is going to come. In particular, the Android Lollipop update for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has been a long time coming, but thankfully the wait might not be for much longer. According to a report by SamMobile, the update for the Note 4 will be rolling out by the end of July, though as always, don’t expect to have Lollipop by July 31st on the dot – your upgrade could lag a few weeks depending on where you are in the world.

Still, it’s good news that Samsung hasn’t forgotten the Note 4, and in turn, its other devices like the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3 which are next in line for the update in the near future – assuming Android M doesn’t come out before then.

What do you think about the Android Lollipop update for Samsung Galaxy Note 4 coming out by the end of July? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

HangKeys makes a fun game out of an iOS keyboard

HangKeys iOS Keyboard

When messaging a friend of family member begins to drop off, wouldn’t it be good if you could fire up a game to liven things up a bit? Normally, you’d have to meet your would-be opponent in an app like Words With Friends, but new iOS keyboard HangKeys is able to skip the formalities and drop a fresh game of Hangman in any messaging app on your phone. Feel like you could use something like this during your next Facebook Messenger exchange? All you need to do is to switch to the HangKeys keyboard on your iOS device, enter a word and send the grid over to your adversary. They can then reply with their suggestions from any platform, whether it be Android, Windows Phone or PC. Luckily, the app does most of the heavy lifting but you will need to manually select each letter and send back the automatically updated grid after each turn. It’s a small bit of work for what is an otherwise fun game. While nearly all of the iOS keyboards we’ve seen focus on making texting easier, this little app could offer some light relief if the conversation runs dry.

Windows 10 launches on July 29th, here’s how to get in line

Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 is coming on July 29th, and you don’t even need to get out of your chair to get a spot in the upgrade line. Take a gander at your Notification Area in the Taskbar and you should find a Windows icon that, when clicked, reveals a shiny new Windows 10 upgrade panel. It’s currently being rolled out to select users, since plenty of you have emailed in screenshots, but we’ve yet to see it ourselves. As before, users will have a year to climb onto the Free Windows 10 bandwagon, but once they do, they’ll get free security upgrades for the life of the device.

[Thanks, Dan S]
