Skype Translator is heading to the desktop app this summer

Last month, Microsoft removed the sign-up requirement for folks to give Skype’s live translation chops a try. Now, a preview version of the multi-language tool is heading to the desktop. Skype Translator is scheduled to roll out inside the chat-focused app’s desktop software at the end of the summer, delivering real-time translation for voice/video calls and instant messaging. Right now, the speech function supports English, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin, but if you’re conversing via IM, there are 50 more languages added to the list. Windows 10 arrives at this summer too, and real-time translating is sure to come in handy when chatting it up on a 84-inch Surface Hub.

Plex gives your media server a secure connection

Plex's media server with a secure connection

You probably don’t think of your personal media server as a target for hackers and spies, but Plex isn’t taking any chances. The company has started handing out free SSL security certificates to everyone using a media server, giving you an encrypted connection while you’re picking a movie to watch or simply signing in. The feature works across devices, too — you’ll get the same locked-down link whether you’re on your phone or the web. Support is live now on Android, Plex Home Theater, Roku players, Windows and the web, and it should land shortly on game consoles, iOS and smart TVs.

With Google’s announcement of Android M at Google I/O 2015, we’ve been very interested to know what this means for real-world devices. Luckily, the Developer Preview for Nexus 5, 6 and 9 has been available for some time now, and there are already some very interesting reports coming out. One of the most interesting reports suggests that the standby battery life of Android devices running Android M is going to be significantly increased thanks to the new Doze and App Standby features.

Nexus 5 running Android MAccording to this report’s testing, a Nexus 5 running Android M had only consumed 9% of its battery life after 48 hours on standby compared to 24% drained on a Nexus 5 running Android 5.1.1. That’s a pretty substantial gain and if we project what the maximum possible standby time could be, we see that the Nexus 5 running Android M would reach 533 hours compared to 200 hours on the Android 5.1.1 Nexus 5. While that’s just a hypothetical, it does give us lots of hope that all Android M devices will see a substantial boost in battery life.

For those wondering, the Doze feature is designed to activate when your device is idle, improving your standby battery life. App Standby similarly attempts to stop power hungry apps doing too much while your phone is not charging, and hopefully there will be control over exactly which apps are able to do this.

What do you think about the improved standby battery life on a Nexus 5 running Android M? Are any of you running the Developer Preview experiencing the same? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Android 5.1 for the Motorola DROID Turbo is coming June 10th

Back in March we heard of Motorola‘s plans to jump the the Motorola DROID Turbo from Android KitKat straight to Android 5.1, eliminating Android 5.0 from the equation entirely. While in the long term DROID Turbo owners should probably be thanking Motorola for its foresight, it’s still a hard wait considering so many other devices are rocking Android Lollipop already. Still, the wait is almost over with reports saying that Android 5.1 for the Motorola DROID Turbo is going to be dropped on June 10th.

The DROID Turbo is certainly Motorola’s most impressive device from a hardware perspective, at least, ignoring to the Motorola-manufactured Nexus 6, but it’s interesting that they didn’t give it the same treatment that it gave its other major devices, the Moto X and Moto G. All the same, the update is apparently coming, so come June 10th, start mashing your System Updates button – and feel free to drop us a line in the comments if (or when) you get your update.

Chrome on Android finds relevant info for any word you touch

Google Chrome's logo is seen at Google's

Arguably the biggest announcement to come out of Google I/O last week was the Now on Tap feature that lets you search within apps. Well, a new update for Chrome on Android dubbed “Tap to Search” looks like it could be pretty similar: it lets you search about a term on a web page for information without leaving the page. The example Google gives is that say you’re on The Hollywood Reporter and you do a touch-and-hold on the word “America.” Not only will it scroll up a search window, instead of stuff about the country, it populates a bunch of information about the flick Captain America: Civil War like pictures, news and casting information. Pretty cool, right? It’s in the process of rolling out right now, with Asian language support coming soon and you can see it in action in the GIF after the break.

Square Enix has been on a game releasing roll the last few days.  First it was a new runner take on Tomb Raider with Lara Croft: Relic Run. Then it was the release of Hitman: Sniper and now they push out Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lion to help gamers pass the time this weekend. This release version is the one that they pushed out to the PSP back in 2007 and re-released to iOS in 2011.

Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lion

Like all the Final Fantasy titles that Square Enix brings to the mobile sector, this one will set you back a pretty penny coming in at $13.99. Fans of the franchise, and in particular the tactics RPG version of the series, won’t hesitate to pick this one up. Others might find the price tag a bit to steep for their Opinion Rewards credit balance for now. Those of you that already have it on another platform know just how great it is. If you are new to the title, check out the short PSP intro to get a better idea before hand.

Ready to take the plunge into a world of wonders that will leave you connected to a wall outlet to keep your device alive? Hit the links below and bounce on into the Pay Store and get to work.

Additional game story-line and details can be found at the official Final Fantasy Tactics website.

Google revamps Android TV with over 600 new apps

Google is hoping to give Android TV a boost after updating the platform to make app discovery much easier, letting you find more than 600 ‘new’ apps that have previously been difficult to find. Our chums over at TechCrunch spotted the improvement, which will now organize the features into 20 collections that run from movies and sports through to multiplayer gaming. The software requires a 29MB update and if it’s not already on your device, it shouldn’t be long before it arrives. When we reviewed the Nexus Player last year, our biggest concern was the lack of app selection. This update, combined with the addition of things like broadcast TV support and Sling TV should hopefully push Android TV a lot closer to competing with the Rokus of this world.

Star Wars: Uprising is a new RPG title slated for fall release from Kabam and Disney

Another Star Wars title is in the works. I am sure there are plenty more that we just don’t know about. However, this one we do know a little bit about. Game developers Kabam, along with Disney and LucasFilm, are working on a new RPG titled Star Wars: Uprising. The game will be a deep role-playing game (RPG) experience that will immerse players in the Star Wars universe following the fall of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine. According to their timeline, this story line will fall between Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi and before Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

As a gamer, you will be able to create your own unique character, go on missions, build up your gear and skills. Along your journey you will learn hundreds of abilities and collect iconic Star Wars gear to create the next generation of hereos: Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, Rebel Guerilla, Diplomat, Gambler or something completely different. Where things start to sound even better is that the title will have you create a crew and cartel to join in on large-scale sector-wide battles that will dictate the future of the game universe. Mix in real-time co-op with friends against the Empire and it is starting to sound like a pretty interesting title, to say the least.

You don’t have to sit around and twiddle your thumbs until Star Wars: Uprising is launch in the fall of 2015 to get involved with the game. Kabam has the official Star Wars: Uprising website up and running where you can pre-register for the title and win exclusive prizes like a storm trooper helmet, by voting for in-game content.  They also mention that they are going to begin a beta testing roll out in the coming weeks in select territories too. I don’t see a way to register to get included in that, but I would assume by participating on the site you will have better odds of getting in the door.

Head over to the playstarwarsuprising.com and take a look around. Be sure to register and get involved in helping to shape the game’s universe.

Sling TV launches a standalone service for Latinos

Netherlands v Mexico: Round of 16 - 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil

Last month, Sling TV introduced a couple of channel packs for the Spanish-speaking audience in the US. But now the company’s taking that one step further with Sling Latino, a standalone service for people who are only interested in having access to channels en Español. The main package, called Paquete Total, is $12 per month and features 22 of the most popular networks in Spanish, including Azteca America, Galavisión, beIN Sports en Español, Univision, UniMás, Univision Deportes Network, Univision tlnovelas and many more. That said, there is a cheaper option for just $7: Paquete Esencial, which comes with Azteca America, Cinelatino, beIN Sports en Español, Univision tlnovelas and 12 other channels, although it’s missing most of Univision’s properties.

The Colombia and España Packs, meanwhile, are the same price as the Paquete Esencial, but only feature content from their respective country. Much like the original product, Sling Latino’s expected to offer more channel bundles in the future, and any of these can be combined with Sling TV’s $20-per-month basic package. Sling Latino customers also have the option to purchase two extra streams for $5 monthly, which would come in handy to those who want to watch different things simultaneously across multiple devices.

Facebook Messenger only shares your location when you tell it to

Sharing your location with the person you’re chatting with in Facebook Messenger isn’t a new feature, but the way its done has changed… thankfully. The app no longer shares your location by default, nixing the stalkerish function that updated folks on your friends list with your movements. Instead, Messenger only sends that info when you tell it to. By tapping on a map pin, those details can be sent as a separate message in a chat window. The app places a small map in your convo as its own note, pointing to either your current spot or a rendezvous point for future reference.

Before this update, the mobile software pinged your phone every time you sent a message and shared that info with your pals. That method of sharing made things like this creepy Chrome extension possible. Of course, Facebook never hid the location-tracking chops of the app, and now it only shares your location with friends when you tell it to. According to TechCrunch, this update is just the beginning of what the folks in Menlo Park have planned for GPS inside the app, so we’ll be curious to see how the next stage plays out.
