Just about a month ago Motorola started rolling out Android 5.1 for the Moto X 2nd Gen device. The unlocked ones at least. Now we can toss Verizon branded devices in the mix as official recipients. Verizon has updated the software update page for the device to outline Android 5.1. Verizon outlines the update as adding in new interruption controls, notification volume control access, drop down controls for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi from notification panel and an increase to the minimum swipe distance to activate the ambient display.
It will also include Factory Data Reset Protection. That is the new security implementation that protects your device from a factory data reset by requiring your Google Account credentials to be logged in order to use it after the wipe. I don’t see the Chop Gesture listed in the PDF, nor do I see VoLTE or HD Voice though.
Some users may already have the update installed, while others will be waiting impatiently. Like most OTA updates, it could take a few weeks to hit every active device in the wild. If you do see it appear, make sure you have a solid Wi-Fi connection, well over 50% life and some time to kill for it to download and install.

Google Hangouts for iOS gets a redesign, better performance
Frustrated with the Google Hangouts app on iOS from time to time? Us too. Mountain View updated the mobile software today with a refreshed UI and more. First, you’ll likely notice the new coat of Material Design paint that tidies things up a bit. Heck, even the dialer got a redesign. There’s also a new quick compose button that allows you to quickly send messages to the folks you chat with often. Access to images from the gallery, camera or emoji library is easier too, and you can now send multiple photos at once. The update includes the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, and the latter hopefully remedies a few of the headaches some of us at Engadget HQ have been experiencing lately. The goods are available now at iTunes, and the Android version is said to arrive shortly.

Uber picked up some of Bing’s mapping tech and employees
It turns out that Uber’s desire for mapping tech didn’t really stop with Nokia’s Here maps. The ride-sharing platform just picked up a portion of Microsoft’s Bing maps technologies and about 100 of Redmond’s employees as TechCrunch tells it. The way that TC describes the deal, the employees that Uber is absorbing were responsible for putting image data into the search engine (aerial, 3D and street footage, apparently) and the folks’ll likely be doing the same task at their new employer. What’s that mean for you? Well, that the map display in Uber’s app is probably going to get a bit more detailed now, hopefully making it easier for your driver to figure out exactly where you are. Nah, they’ll still likely drive around in circles while you watch in frustration.

Supreme Court won’t touch Google’s fight with Oracle over Android
When Oracle got a second chance at making Google pay for using Java programming kits in Android, the folks in Mountain View raced to the Supreme Court in hopes of stopping that renewed lawsuit dead in its tracks. Unfortunately for Google, that’s not going to happen — the Supreme Court now says that it won’t tackle the case. The move kicks the issue back to a lower court, and denies a once-and-for-all decision on the extent to which companies can copyright their code. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Google will be on the hook for Android, but the company is going to face a tougher fight than it wanted.

Sky’s making a kids app that will rival Netflix and YouTube
When Sky announced the launch of a new Kids section on its set-top boxes, it immediately put Google and Netflix in its crosshairs. On-demand TV shows and movies were suddenly front and centre on the homepage, allowing children to select up to 4,000 episodes from cartoons like SpongeBob Squarepants, Ben 10, Adventure Time and Dora The Explorer when the company is done adding them all. It appears that was just the start though: Sky is now embracing mobile and will launch a dedicated kids app for smartphones and tablets.
The broadcaster has teamed up with usTwo, the company behind the smash hit game Monument Valley, and development of the app is already underway. It’s intended for children between four and nine, with The Cartoon Network, Disney and Nickelodeon all contributing programming to the service. Sky says the app will offer “an intuitive and playful experience” and will come with features that allow parents to filter what their kids can access, set a limit on usage with a “bedtime” setting and look back at what they’ve been watching.
The parent-focused features will likely be welcomed, especially as Google has come under fire for allegedly delivering illegal advertising to children. In the US, parent groups took their concerns to the FCC, arguing that some videos masquerade as user-generated content when they are in fact ads. Like Netflix, Sky can sidestep a lot of those issues as it has more control over what is displayed in its app, giving parents more piece of mind when it launches early next year.
Microsoft plugs OneDrive storage into your Chromecast
In case you needed another way to beam photos and videos to your Chromecast, the Android OneDrive app has you covered. The latest update for Microsoft’s cloud-storage service will take all those gorgeously arranged images from your device running Google’s mobile OS and put ’em on your TV via Mountain VIew’s HDMI wunderstick. Pretty handy, right? Your Galaxy S6 (or any other Android device with the app installed) should see the update shortly if it already hasn’t downloaded. As for iOS users, they’ll likely have to wait a bit longer — the last update only mentions bug fixes and stability improvements.

Meerkat’s embeddable player puts your streams all over the web
Want people to see your Meerkat streams in more places? Well, you’re in luck. The company announced an embeddable player today, a feature allows you to place your channel on the web so that folks don’t have to venture too far to find your video. If you aren’t broadcasting live, the player will display the details for your upcoming stream. Don’t have one scheduled? It’ll show the stats from your last session. And if you haven’t captured any video yet, it’ll fill the space with your profile. The embed options include three sizes — Portrait, Square and Big Square — so you can find the right fit, and Meerkat is giving you the ability to nix comments if you’d like. Because sometimes you just want to avoid any unwanted noise from the peanut gallery.

Facebook makes it easier for iPhone users to find links
Facebook’s about to make it easier for you to find and share links while you’re on the move. The social network has updated its iPhone application with a new feature that lets users search for articles, videos and other web content using keywords. As pictured above, typing a couple of words about what you’re looking will bring up a list of related links — which can then be viewed and shared with your Facebook friends, directly from the app. For now, the feature is only available to people who have an iPhone, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this on Facebook’s Android app in the near future.

July 4th, Independence Day, the day that the United States freed its self from an alien invasion thanks to Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum in 1996. At least, to those that might not know what it really means anyways. In reality it was the day the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776. With the Federal holiday comes fireworks, BBQ’s and sales. Leave it to America to commercialize everything. Not that I will complain about a sale. If you are in the market for some great titles from 2K games, now is the time to burn up those Google Opinion Reward credits as they are having a pretty good sale right now.
iOS users have a leg up on us for one title, BioShock, at $4.99 vs $9.99. Damn those iOS users. The rest of us can grab Sid Meir’s Civilization Revolution 2 and XCOM: Enemy Within for 50% off. That takes both from $9.99 to $4.99 a piece. Think of it as a two-for-one offer. I am sure Tony Simons will jump on the WWE 2K deal which is $5.99 from $7.99. On the other sports front, NHL 2K is also on sale from $7.99 to $2.99. The company also mentions NBA 2K15 as being on sale from $7.99 to $2.99, but fail to mention what that covers since the game is free. I assume it is an in-app purchase for something.
To grab any, or all, of the titles your best bet will to head to 2K games Google Play Store page, links to a few specific titles below.
