I know a lot of you out there use Plex on your phones, tablets, Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, XBox, PC and plenty of other devices. If you also happen to own a smart TV and have been using the application there, then you will be happy to know that a number of supported TV’s are getting updates to bring more goodies to your daily viewing enjoyment. Plex made an announcement this morning that select supported Smart TV’s along with the app for Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 have an updated user experience bundled with some new features that may seem long over due to the heavy user.

Among the changes you will find the addition of Plex Channels which gives you access to streaming media from Vimeo, TED Talks, Soundcloud and more. You will also see Plex Companion which will let you, finally, fling content from your Plex connected devices to the TV. Filtering and sorting is now available as well. Simply put, you can sort and filter your content by  number of predefined options such as genre, decade, unwatched and others. Finally, you will also now have access to movie trailers along with other movie extras.

None of that will seem like that big of a deal to those of you that use Plex daily on connected devices, but for those who wanted the same experience on their Smart TV and Playstation’s without connecting something else to it will be excited about the changes. Feel free to check out the full announcement blog post from Plex for additional details. For questions on how to get the app on various Smart TV’s such as LG, Toshiba and Vizio, checkout the Plex Support page.

Evernote shutting down its Food apps for iOS and Android

Wall_Food_10081

Evernote Food has been around since 2011, but it looks like its days are numbered. In a blog post today, Evernote announced that the service’s apps for iOS and Android, which allowed people to share recipes and book restaurant reservations, will no longer be supported as of September 30th. While users can keep accessing Food if they’ve already downloaded the applications, the company did say certain features within them soon won’t work anymore — including syncing with Evernote. Naturally, this also means the apps are going to stop getting updates, so be sure to mentally prepare yourself if you happened to be a fan of Evernote’s Food.

Lara Croft GO from Square Enix is now available

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Lara Croft is a very iconic female gaming character. She was bad ass and the titles brought action mixed with puzzles to new heights. One phenomenal aspect of the Tomb Raider/Lara Croft series is that it can be adapted to a variety of gaming styles. Many titles brought the 3rd person perspective while others were more of a top down view. The last mobile iteration was a traditional endless runner, Lara Croft: Relic Run and Square even brought the original title from Playstation, Tomb Raider, as well. Today Square Enix has launched the highly anticipated puzzle adventure, Lara Croft GO.

The title takes queues from Hitman GO where all your actions and decisions take careful planning on a fixed path. You control Lara by swiping the direction you want her to move. You aren’t hindered by a move counter, but you will 75 puzzles to solve over 5 chapters. Each chapter brings Lara to a new location that offers up new challenges and puzzles to solve. Don’t forget about the relics and the outfits for Lara too. For puzzle adventure gamers, and fans of Lara Croft titles, the $4.99 price tag doesn’t seem outlandish. Square does include some in-app purchase options, but they don’t seem to be forced upon you in order to progress in the game and run from $1.99 – $4.99 per item.

Head to the Play Store and pull out those Opinion Reward dollars and get to it.

Microsoft Snip annotates screenshots with voice notes and scribbles

Screenshots come in handy when offering feedback and comments on any number of things. To lend a hand with that process, Microsoft has a new app for Windows that’s up to the task. The software is called Snip, and in addition to capturing parts of your screen to share among your friends and colleagues, the app also lets you mark up the snaps. With both voice notes and stylus scribbles, Snip gives you two options for getting that point across. When you’re done, you can paste the image into another app (they’re copied to the clipboard by default), distribute it as a web link or save it to your device as a video (MP4). When you lend your voice to the captures, the app automatically turns them into videos. And yes, they can be embedded on the web should the need arise. If you’re looking to give it a go, the app is available in beta form now from the source link below.

Google Chrome may ease auto-playing video headaches

Let’s face it: audio and video that automatically plays on a web page is pretty annoying. To help remedy the headache, a new feature in Google Chrome’s Dev Channel won’t play those items on tabs that you’re not looking at. If you click a link for the latest Hunger Games trailer and bounce back to your inbox while it loads, you won’t have to struggle to find the mute switch on the preceding ad. The content will still preload (if the developer opts to), but it won’t play until that particular tab is in the foreground. That should ease the panic of finding the sound or catching a glimpse of an item you’d really rather not see soon enough — in Chrome at least. Features in the Dev Channel often find their way into the stable release of the browser (eventually). While there’s no guarantee this will make the cut, we’re crossing our fingers.

YouTube Gaming is now available, hopes to deal Twitch a significant blow

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

When it comes to games live streaming, Twitch is pretty much the only name that comes to mind. YouTube intends to change that thinking with a live streaming service of its own: YouTube Gaming. This definitely isn’t the first time that we’ve heard of YouTube Gaming, but it will be the first time that the web interface is available for all to use. On top of that, the Android app is now available to US and UK Android users – though you can just circumvent that if someone were to provide you an APK to sideload on your device.

If that’s not your style, you can just check out the (English only) web interface at gaming.youtube.com which serves as a hub for you to access all the games and feeds that you want to watch. Who knew a whole new way to watch Minecraft videos would be so exciting?

Former Apple CEO John Sculley launches a line of stylish smartphones

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Like most consumer items, the lower the price point of a phone, the less exciting the design. Obi Worldphone co-founder (and former Apple CEO) John Sculley and Ammunition design founder Robert Brunner decided to challenge that by creating mid-level, inexpensive international smartphones that look — if not cool — at least unique. The new Obi Worldphone SF1 and SJ1.5 both start off at under $200 ($199 and $129 respectively), will be available in October and target buyers 25 years old and younger in emerging markets in Asia, Africa and Middle East. The phones are filled with components from the usual suspects (Qulacomm and MediaTek processors, Sony camera, Corning Gorilla Glass and Dolby sound), but it’s the look of the phones and their skinned version of Android that matters to Obi. “We are committed to being a design-led company,” Sculley told Engadget. Slideshow-315484

It’s more than just design and price, Obi Worldphones is relying on being nimble to compete against the Apple, Samsung and HTCs of the world. The company sees the size of those larger companies and their legacy as a weakness. Larger companies tend to move slower while Obi Worldphones is fresh new startup with the ability to quickly iterate designs and swap out components that it believes would serve it’s audience the best.

But it’s now going too cheap with Qualcomm, Sony and Dolby parts inside its phones. Sculley pointed out that the company would not compromise on the quality of it’s phones just to hit a low price point.

The SF1 with 4G/LTE sports a reinforced fiberglass body with a five-inch display and flashes for the front and back cameras. It runs a Snapdragon 615 processor and is $199 for 2GB or RAM and 16GM of storage and $249 for 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

The cheaper SJ1.5 (with 3G) has a quad-Core processor in a cases available in multiple colors (red, black and white) with accents. The $129 phone comes with 16GB of internal storage. Both phones have dual SIM slots– a must for a phone launching in an emerging market, and it’s going to quite a few. Initial countries where it’ll launch online and in-store include be Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, South Africa, Pakistan, Turkey and India. The company could be a serious contender to Samsung, HTC and Apple if it maintains these low prices and striking designs. That is, if the kids like it.

Adobe’s next mobile photo editor could be revealed in October

Adobe Photoshop Express

When Adobe announced it was discontinuing its mobile Photoshop Touch app earlier this year, it hinted at greater things to come in a mysterious project code-named “Project Rigel.” While it listed a vague “late 2015” availability at the time, a recent CNET report suggests we’ll be formally introduced to Adobe’s new offering this October. The company’s latest pro-level mobile effort will reportedly come in the form of a free iOS editing app that looks to offer much of the desktop software’s capability wrapped in a touch-friendly UI that won’t scare away novices.

There still aren’t many details, but CNET says the app is expected to make its official debut at Adobe’s Max conference in October. We can expect desktop tools that professionals are used to combined with menus and tools designed to be precisely controlled with a fingertip rather than a more accurate mouse pointer or stylus.

Of course, Project Rigel isn’t Adobe’s first entry built for smartphones and tablets. Previous efforts include the discontinued Photoshop Touch and the more consumer-oriented Photoshop Express (pictured above). It also offers Lightroom for mobile, but the app (available on iOS and Android) feels more like a powerful companion to its desktop sibling rather than a standalone option for mobile photogs. Project Rigel could represent the company’s strongest push yet to make an impact in the mobile market, but it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out.

Infltr gives Instagram addicts millions of editing options

Photo-editing apps like Instagram are great, but usually the options are limited to a couple dozen or so filters. That’s not the case with Infltr, a $2 iOS app that claims 5.1 million unique hues. With this piece of mobile software, swiping across the edit screen traverses through the color wheel, applying various shades to your photo until you arrive at the perfect combo. There’s no tapping on presets here. Instead, the user interface relies on those swipes around an invisible color map to make edits to your snapshots. To keep track of what’s being applied as you move across the display, a small color bubble appears under your fingertip. What’s more, you choose a color to apply before you capture an image for a more accurate preview of the final result. Sure, it costs a couple bucks, but if you’re super into mobile photos, the app certainly offers a few more options to drive those creations. Slideshow-315518

Amazon Underground gives you really, truly free apps

Free apps sometimes try to rope you into in-app purchases to make a profit. Not so with Amazon’s new approach to free software, though, as the online retailer is offering over $10,000 in apps, games and even those in-app add-ons at no cost. Yes, it sounds too good to be true on the surface, but Bezos & Co. will compensate developers based on how long you use their apps. Amazon will shell out per-minute payments in exchange for developers nixing any fees, which means for the software is free to download and use. GdgtSpot reports that the company’s “Free App of the Day” promotion is no more, so it looks like Underground will replace it. Since Google Play’s rules don’t allow for apps that serve up other apps or games, you’ll have to download the Underground app directly from Amazon. And when you do, look for the “Actually Free” designation for items that are included in the new initiative.
