Apple’s iOS 9.1 public beta is now available for download

While iOS 9 may be available for download in a few days, Apple is wasting no time getting the next version in the hands of beta testers. iOS 9.1 is now ready for download for folks who’ve signed up for Apple’s Beta Software Program. In addition to some new emoji, the build includes APIs for 3D Touch and Live Photos so devs can get busy building apps that support those features. If you’re not feeling too adventurous, the version of iOS 9 meant for public consumption hits next week.

Android Pay is available starting today

Android Pay, Google’s tap-to-pay smartphone wallet, starts rolling out today, the company announced in a blog post. Android Pay will gradually hit all compatible devices over the next few days and it’s accepted at more than 1 million locations across the US, including Toys ‘R’ Us, GameStop, Panera, Walgreens, Macy’s, Subway and Whole Foods. Android Pay stores your credit, debit, gift and loyalty cards, and allows users to pay simply by unlocking their phones and placing it near an NFC-connected terminal. Yeah, it’s a bit like Apple Pay.

Android Pay is compatible with NFC-enabled Android devices, meaning those that run at least KitKat 4.4, and it will be available across all carriers. It supports credit and debit cards from Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover, and a hefty lineup of popular banks.

As for security, Android Pay uses tokenization, which means transactions are processed via individual account numbers, rather than your actual credit or debit card numbers. If you lose your phone — rather, your wallet — head to Android Device Manager to shut it down so no one can spend your cash. Those who use Google Wallet can expect that app to receive the Android Pay update over the next few days, while everyone else will be able to download the standalone app fresh from Google Play.

If you’re going to stick with a physical wallet for a while longer, there’s still some news here for you: The launch of Android Pay signals the imminent launch of Android’s latest mobile OS, Marshmallow.

Apple’s OS X El Capitan launches on September 30th

Apple’s latest desktop OS upgrade, dubbed “El Capitan,” is scheduled to launch on September 30th, Apple announced today. El Capitan is like an update within an update: It’s named after a landmark inside of Yosemite (the name of the previous OS version) and it features a series of minor, yet useful, tweaks. El Capitan offers a new split-screen view, changes to email and app management, drag-and-drop options for Notes, and updates to Safari and Maps, among other improvements. We got our hands on the developer build back in June and concluded it was a nice upgrade, if not revolutionary: “There simply is no killer feature this time around. But as minor as some of them may seem, they’re all at the very least nice to have, and in many cases genuinely useful.”

Apple teased the El Capitan release date yesterday with a sneaky little screenshot during its iPad Pro event:

Office 2016 starts rolling out on September 22

Microsoft’s next major Office update is now only a few weeks away: the software giant just announced that it will start rolling out Office 2016 starting on September 22. While it’s not nearly as exciting as new hardware, it’s still a significant release for Microsoft. It’ll be the first version of Office built specifically for Windows 10, and it also brings in some long-awaited features like real-time co-authoring and the addition of OneDrive attachments in Outlook. It also comes a few months after we saw the release of Office 2016 for Macs. You can still get a taste for Office 2016 on PCs today with the Public Preview, and it looks like you’ll be able to easily upgrade to the final versions of those apps once they’re available.

Periscope streamers and viewers can finally watch video the right way

Video should be shot in landscape mode. Look at that giant TV in your living room. Head down the movie theater and check out the silver screen. Both are in landscape and now, finally, Twitter’s live video-streaming app Periscope will support the correct orientation on iPhone and Android. But, if you’re a fan of portrait videos (you monster) you can continue your upright video shooting ways. For viewers, they can watch videos in either landscape or portrait mode regardless of how they are shot. The app will auto rotate the video to compensate how the phone is held.

Twitter recently added wide aspect-ratio video recording mode support to its own apps so bringing it to Periscope isn’t that big of a surprise. Also, with the new tvOS for the Apple TV, you can probably expect a Periscope app to end up on streaming video to your HDTV and for that screen, you want the correct orientation.

In addition to landscape videos, the updated app now tells you which of the accounts you follow shared a video that appears in your home feed. Plus on Android when you start a private broadcast, a list of mutual followers (people you follow who also follow you back) is now available. Periscope says, “we think this list is a more natural selection of people who you are likely to broadcast to.” The company also says that this feature is coming to iOS soon.

iOS 9 will be available for download September 16th

An official announcement of new iPhones usually means a release date for the latest version of Cupertino’s mobile operating system as well. Today was no different as Apple announced that iOS 9 would be available as a free download September 16th. When it arrives next week, you’ll be privy to new features like a new and improved Siri, system-level security settings and split-screen multitasking on the iPad (hello, iPad Pro). Native apps like Maps (now with transit info), Notes and others have also been refreshed, so if you haven’t been adventurous enough to test drive the public beta, there will be a load of new stuff for you to try. And there’s that brand new News app too, serving up personalized content to your devices for reading on the go.

To help store all of those newfangled Live Photos, iCloud pricing has been revised to 50GB for 99 cents a month, 200GB for $3/month and 1TB for a $10 monthly fee. If you’re looking to make the switch from Android, Apple’s new “Move to iOS” app will arrive alongside iOS 9 as well to lend a hand moving your stuff over to a new phone/tablet. In terms of compatible devices, the new OS will play nice with iPhone 4s and later, 5th-gen iPod touch and later, iPad 2 and later and iPad mini and later when it arrives in just a few days.

Tinder adds a third swipe option called ‘Super Like’

Tinder is a dating app known for its simplistic swiping system: Swipe right if you’re into someone’s profile and swipe left if you’re not feeling it. But, love isn’t that simple. It requires at least one more swipe. Today, Tinder is rolling out the option to swipe up and “Super Like” someone’s profile — it’ll be available first in Australia, with a global release scheduled for later this year. Users are granted a limited number of Super Likes, and people who receive an upward swipe will be notified by “the presence of a blue footer on a given profile,” Tinder explains. Instead of swiping, users can also just tap the new blue star icon to Super Like someone’s profile.Slideshow-318368

“Because they’re so limited in number, a Super Like, or a ‘swipe up’, sends a more powerful signal, conveying an especially high level of interest,” Tinder CEO Sean Rad says. “People like to know that someone finds them special, and we think this will lead to even better matches.”

A Super Like doesn’t force the receiver to respond to the swiper, but it can “influence that decision,” Tinder warns. Er, says. Tinder says.

“Adult Player” app blackmails users by taking their photos

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

If you use third-party app stores and enjoy your porn on the go, you may want to steer clear of this nasty little app.  Adult Player is a ransom-ware app that is currently floating around that promises, as the name would suggest, adult content.  However, once installed the little app takes a photo or the user when it is opened the first time. Then it locks the device threatening to expose the pictures and users privacy information along with deleting all data on the device if they do not pony up $500 USD.

The device will remain locked even after a reboot, and booting up into safe mode or doing a restore is the only current way of removing the malware.

What use to only affect the PC community, ransom-ware is becoming increasingly problematic in the mobile device world. Partly in thanks to the open nature of the Android operating system. The general public shouldn’t run into issues as they tend to stick to safe methods of installing apps via the Google Play Store. However, adults do enjoy their adult content and will often times find their way from proven app stores to get it. While the Play Store doesn’t currently offer an “Adults” section, it might be something to look into. That industry does make a killing and as we move to a more mobile society it is apparent that people will go to what ever length they deem necessary to get that content.

Twitter’s unifying its apps across iPhone and iPad

Everybody’s getting ready for tomorrow’s big Apple event and that even includes Twitter. While the media briefing is likely going to focus heavily on a new iPhone, the microblogging service is looking to improve its app on the iPad and bring it more in line with the experiences users currently have on Cupertino’s handset. The update hopes to bring responsive design (how websites adapt their layouts to different screen sizes, automatically) to the forefront by focusing on a few key aspects: canvas, device, orientation, size class and typography. While some of those might seem a bit arcane and more for user interface designers than you or me, the long and short of it is Twitter’s what it hopes are smart, instantaneous decisions to make using its app on different-sized iOS devices a comfortable experience.

Twitter says that it thinks of the app like a pyramid, where content width adjusts in relation to text-size changes taking the top spot; while aspects like profile headers need to be modified just under that. The outfit goes on to say that when looking at the process from this lens, only a handful of things have to be razed wholesale at the base, like how direct messages appear on larger screens. Where might you see this soon? In what’s likely to be a big talking point tomorrow: iOS9’s multitasking/app-snapping feature on the iPad.
