Looks like Facebook is doing their due diligence to deliver as much information to users as possible so they don’t exit the app. Facebook has announced an update that is starting to roll out that delivers a personalized notifications tab. According to Facebook the new tab is based on users feed back that want more than what Grandma had to say about your last tattoo. Take a quick look at the video of it in action to see what to expect.

The expanded notifications tab will bring in a number of things that might remind you of Google Now a bit. On the friends side of things you can expect milestones like birthdays and life events. You will see TV show reminders and Sports Scores based on the Pages you have Liked and upcoming events you have joined. There will be other optional things you can have the tab show such as weather updates, movies playing nearby, places to eat close to you and things happening around you.

Android Marshmallow update for the LG G4 stops roll out due to technical reasons

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

LG was obviously very proud to be the first non-Google manufacturer to announce that their flagship smartphone would be updated to Android Marshmallow, but there’s been a bit of a hiccup. According to reports on Reddit, the Android Marshmallow update for the LG G4 has been stopped in Poland with LG citing “technical reasons” for the delay. We’re not quite sure what the issue might be, but we’re glad LG stopped the update rather than continue the roll out and deal with the bug later (which they kind of did for Android Lollipop on the LG G3 and then never fixed it); however, there’s no word on when the roll-out may start again.

This isn’t the first time a manufacturer has halted an update to deal with issues – Samsung did so not long ago with the Android Lollipop. In the end, it’s always better to find the issues before they’re widespread complaints, but you kind of get the feeling the manufacturers are rushing at breakneck speed to get these updates out instead of carefully making sure they’re optimized for their devices.

What do you think about the delay to the Android Marshmallow update for the LG G4? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Bernie Sanders joins Verizon union workers’ picket in NYC

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders put his campaign where his mouth is on Monday when he spoke at a picket line with Verizon union workers in New York City. Communication Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers organized the picket, which aims to bolster support for 40,000 Verizon employees nationwide as they continue a months-long contract battle with the communication giant. In June, Verizon proposed a new union contract, but CWA takes issue with some of its key points, including suggested pay increases, the structure of pension benefits, health care contributions, whether Verizon can contract out or offshore union jobs, and employees’ vacation time. The union also criticizes Verizon for failing to implement its FiOS service in promised regions.

Become a cuddly teddy bear with Oculus Rift and Adawarp

Adawarp, a two-man Japanese tech startup, is in the long-distance bear-hug business. The company’s Telepresence virtual reality technology transports one person, wearing an Oculus Rift, into the body of a robotic teddy bear, with real-time movements, sight, voice and all, no matter how far apart the bear and user are. Turn your head and the teddy bear turns his, and use an Xbox controller to articulate the bear’s arms, as MIT Technology Review reports. Users can talk through the bear’s speaker system, hear responses through a microphone and see out of its eyes (each one encircled by a fine layer of fuzz, of course).

Gameloft’s next big title is Sniper Fury

http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();

Gaming on our mobile devices is a very lucrative and addicting business. Gameloft is a solid competitor when it comes to bringing titles out that draw crowds. Their portfolio crosses to just about any genre that your heart desires, and to some you didn’t even know you liked. On Friday they announced another title that will be launching soon entitled Sniper Fury.

The sniper only genre isn’t a new one by any means, but solid sniper targeted games that are worth the time and/or money are few and far between. I have played a number of them and Hitman: Sniper from Square Enix has been my personal favorite to date. Not to say there aren’t others out there worth play as I haven’t played them all. Gameloft doesn’t allude to much with the announcement other than it is coming and attached a small teaser trailer to watch.

They do let us know that Sniper Fury uses the latest rendering based technology that was behind Modern Combat 5: Blackout. Anyone that has played that title knows it looked pretty amazing. On the landing page for the game they are offering up additional goodies for those who pre-register and get others involved. Most of which seem like they will turn out to be in-app purchasable options like:

  • 5 x SPOTTER

    Handheld device, developed from secret bio-radar technology. Identifies and localizes all enemies, human or mechanical, within firing radius. It detects even the slightest of movements, so be sure not to get startled by local wildlife.

    5 x SLOW TIME

    Amazing medical stimulant that was recently developed in Western Europe. Grants the human body supernatural reaction and movement speed. Perception will tell you that time has stopped. Vital advantage when facing deadly enemies.

    5 x PIERCING BULLET

    This chemical-warhead rifle ammo enables the penetration of all armor types. The corrosive tip causes damage that’s unprecedented for a weapon classed as a rifle. This is the scientifically guaranteed “target neutralizer.”

Perks are perks. Go sign up for the game and share for perks when the title drops.

Chrome Canary shows how secure your web browsing really is

Earns Google

If you think that your browser’s little padlock icon isn’t enough to verify a website’s security (but don’t want to install a full-fledged app), you now have a better solution. Google has released a new Chrome Canary build that includes a security panel in amidst the usual developer options. Open it and you’ll not only learn about the encryption for the host page, but the encryption for all the other connected sites, too. This is ostensibly meant to help developers safeguard their sites, but it’ll also let you double-check for hidden security flaws on any site where you suspect that something’s amiss. It’ll take a while longer before this pops up in more refined versions of Chrome, so give Canary a shot if you want to verify a page before you trust it with your data.

Apple poaches NVIDIA’s artificial intelligence leader

NVIDIA's Tegra X1 powering the Renovo Coupe's instrument cluster

Apple’s widely rumored electric car may not be fully autonomous, but it may well have some smarts. The company has hired Jonathan Cohen, who until this month was the director of NVIDIA’s deep learning division — in other words, a form of artificial intelligence. Cohen’s LinkedIn profile only mentions that he’s working on a nebulous “software” effort at Apple. However, his most recent job at NVIDIA centered around technology like Drive PX, a camera-based autopilot system for cars that can identify and react to specific vehicle types. While there’s a chance that Cohen could be working on AI for iOS or the Mac, it won’t be surprising if he brings some self-driving features to Cupertino’s first car, such as hands-off lane changing or parking.

DOJ: Apple owns your iPhone’s software, so it should have a backdoor

The Department of Justice is trying to get Apple to unlock a defendant’s iPhone. While Apple has stated that it can technically bypass the phone’s passcode security, it has so far refused to do so for various reasons. So the DOJ has come up with a new strategy, force Apple to comply because it licenses the software on the phone. Because of that, the DOJ contends that the iPhone maker actually has a relationship with the phone that’s currently evidence in a case. In a reply to Apple’s response to the court order to unlock the phone, the government states, “Apple cannot reap the legal benefits of licensing its software in this manner and then later disclaim any ownership or obligation to assist law enforcement when that same software plays a critical role in thwarting execution of a search warrant.” In other words, it’s your software Apple, not the defendant’s, unlock it.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow review: All about polish and power

When Android 5.0 Lollipop started hitting devices last November, people could tell. Google’s new Material Design aesthetic made sure you wouldn’t mistake it for any prior version of the OS, which was great… especially when you consider how confusing parts of it could be. Now that Android’s look has been more or less firmed up, Google set about making its operating system smoother, smarter and more battery-friendly. The end result: Android 6.0 Marshmallow. So, how’d they do? Spoiler alert: pretty damned well.Slideshow-333282

Google made an info hub to help the migrant and refugee crisis

AUSTRIA-EUROPE-MIGRANTS

A number of tech companies, such as Apple, Google and Facebook, have joined the global efforts to aid Europe’s ongoing refugee crisis. With that in mind, Google today introduced a new initiative designed to assist the migrant relief overseas, adding to the matched donations it announced last month. The search giant has now built a mobile site for people in need, called Crisis Info Hub, which offers quick and simple access to vital information about lodging, medical facilities and transportation. Google’s also looking for volunteers to help improve Translate, a service that’s useful to the migrants and refugees who are in a new country. If you speak German or Arabic and you’d like to lend a hand, head over to Google’s Translate Community page to get started.
