Snapchat’s photo-sharing live feed is finally ready for the masses

For a number of recent events, including the World Cup and Lollapalooza, Snapchat let users beam their event photos to a crowd-contributed feed known as Our Story. After over 350 hours of snaps were uploaded during the test events, the outfit is now letting everyone in on the action. With the latest update, a new Live section rests just below Recent Updates in the app after you capture a photo or some video footage (it’s also accessible from the Stories button on the edit screen). From there, simply select the appropriate option you’re attending to share your spinet of coverage with the masses. Of course, you don’t have to be in attendance to browse the feed and catch on what you’re missing from afar.

The future of IFTTT includes paid plans and hardware harmony

Several of us here at Engadget HQ employ If This Then That’s (IFTTT) recipe-based automation chops to keep app-driven tasks in order. The software outfit has been keen on adding new functionality often, with channels opening up recently for Nike+, Eyefi, Square and more. So what’s down the road for the handy add-on? Paid plans. The New York Times reports that the upcoming options will cater to users who want more than what the regular free version offers, and of course, generating some revenue to help pay the bills. The example given in the report is a social media manager linking various Twitter accounts to the service in order to automate tasks for each. What’s more, the company is aims to create “an operating system” for the so-called Internet of Things that weaves together mounting pile of connected gadgets introduced on the regular. With a recently raised $30 million in funding, doubling staff to focus on both design and business development is the first step towards more automated living for us all.

[New Game] Zombie City Defense brings holographic tower defense to Android

Tower Defense games are a dime a dozen any more. The basic principal is to defend your base of home or what have you, using a variety of weapons, upgrades and tactics. Some are better than others both in gameplay and visual looks. I have spent many hours playing Sentinel 3: Homeworld, Jelly Defense and Fieldrunners. Now there is a new one on the scene that looks to be pretty exciting, offer a zombie twist and look like no other tower defense game I have seen. Meet Zombie City Defense.

Zombie City Defense

Your main goal is to hold the city while hordes of zombies attempt to take it over. Rather than a predetermines sort of approach though you will need to do some planning. Your tactics will solely depend on your play style. Are you going to try and hold the whole city, or just small sections of it. It all depends on what units you choose to use. The title seems to pack in quite a bunch of goods:

Features:
✔ Uniqe holographic look.
✔ Upgrade your units to stay alive.
✔ Mix of RTS & Tower Defense genre.
✔ 3 difficulty levels and an infinite mode.
✔ Detailed cities with schools, industrial zones & downtown districts.
✔ Hordes of enemies to stop you from reaching your goal.
✔ Lots of infantry units and vehicles to chose from. Tanks with artillery support vs zombies ? You can try it!
✔ Different maps with different play styles.

I am all about the blood bath of a zombie battle like Dead Trigger offers, but there is something really appealing to this holographic cityscape. The developer, Mozg Labs, has the title live on the Play Store for all to enjoy. For a limited time it is 50% off which puts it at $1.50 currently. You might want to grab it before the price tag goes back up.

Adobe Photoshop Mix lets you undo mistakes, nab Dropbox files

Adobe’s Photoshop Mix offering for Apple’s slates arrived a few months back alongside its Ink and Slide drawing tools, and it’s not letting the app sit too long before adding new features. The latest version adds an undo/redo option that’ll help with missteps, swaps background/foreground images by dragging thumbnails and saves full-res JPEG and PNG files to that iPad you’re working on. For those of us that don’t keep a lot of work files on our tablets, you can now import images from your Dropbox repository to edit or add to Creative Cloud-stored PSDs whilst on-the-go. The update is now available over at iTunes, so if your device hasn’t yet alerted you or if you’ve yet to take the slate-style editing for a spin, have at it.

Nokia’s HERE Maps is coming to Android as a Samsung exclusive

Nokia's HERE Maps Comes to Samsung Galaxy Devices

Relations between Google and Samsung are already a little tense, but the Korean smartphone maker may just have elevated those frustrations a little further. Extending its existing deal to provide mapping data on Samsung’s Tizen wearables, Nokia (the part that wasn’t sold to Microsoft) today confirmed that it will bring HERE Maps to Android for the first time, giving Samsung Galaxy smartphone owners advanced access to its own Google Maps alternative.

After Nokia jettisoned its smartphone division, the company doubled-down on HERE, striking deals with a few of its former rivals, including Amazon, Jolla and, of course, Samsung. The app itself comes with many of the features you’d find in Google Maps, but also excels in some areas where Google doesn’t. A couple of examples include true offline maps, which are currently supported in 95 countries, and LiveSight, which lets users navigate to landmarks by following virtual signs on their screen. If you don’t own a Samsung smartphone, don’t fret, Nokia says that HERE Maps will come to other Android devices by the end of the year (note: you can still use Google Maps, even on a Samsung handset). The HERE Maps beta will make its way to Galaxy phones when the 3G-enabled Gear S smartwatch goes on sale, which is expected sometime in October.

MSN Messenger will finally, definitely be dead in October

Microsoft retiring Messenger on March 15th, wants you to use Skype instead

Microsoft’s 15-year-old MSN Messaging service will soon be a part of computer lore. It has been shut down in most places for over a year, but Microsoft kept it running in China where it was still quite popular. However, with the advent of Tencent’s QQ, Line and other services, Redmond recently emailed Chinese users (on their Hotmail accounts, naturally) that the service would ride into the sunset on October 31st. To give you an idea of how old it is, the service was created in 1999 by Microsoft to compete against AOL’s AIM chat service (disclaimer: AOL is Engadget’s parent company). However, we doubt too many users will get misty-eyed about its demise — the only nostalgia we have is how difficult it was to get rid of.

Samsung Galaxy S5 on AT&T gets a new OTA update

Samsung-Galaxy-S5-update

Looks like there is a new update on the way out for Samsung Galaxy S5 owners on AT&T‘s network. The update rolls in at a smaller sized 142.8MB’s, but brings a few fixes and improvements that you might like. Assuming you are stock. Here is the list according to the AT&T support page.

  • Security updates and patches
  • Application installation enhancements
  • Accidental emergency dial fixed on the lock screen
  • Several lower layer modem crashes and sluggishness improvement enhancements
  • E-mail UX enhancements
  • S-View cover error
  • Re-activation lock improvements

AT&T makes mention that the update is only available as a OTA. All that means is that Samsung Kies won’t have the update waiting for you when you plug your device in. As usual, make sure you have over 50% battery, a Wi-Fi connection and a little time to kill to download and install the update.

America’s CTO steps down to become government adviser in Silicon Valley

Obamacare's 6-Million Target Hit As Exchange Sees Visits Surge

Reports circulated last week that the US Chief Technical Officer would step down soon, and now the White House has confirmed the news to Wired. Todd Park, the man who led the charge to retool the government’s use of tech, will remain an adviser to the administration from Silicon Valley where he’ll work to reboot the federal government’s IT systems. “Todd has been, and will continue to be, a key member of my administration,” President Obama told the site in a statement. Prior to his post as US CTO, he worked under the same title for the Department of Health and Human Services. Park oversaw the much-maligned relaunch of Healthcare.gov and hired some of the Valley’s talent to government positions. Family reasons were cited as the main cause for the move as Park and his wife sought to relocate back to the San Francisco area.

NFL Mobile gets Sunday afternoon streaming for Verizon customers

All of the popular football apps are getting their annual update ahead of the NFL season kicking off September 4th, and the league’s own option is doing the same. Thanks to the newfangled NFL Now video service, national and personalized video feeds are beamed to your mobile device for all of the latest updates. You can also stream “Fantasy Live” in order to get your roster set before the slate of games starts each week and browse the programming schedule for the league’s TV network. As is the case with regular app updates, sharing content across the social streams gets a boost as well. Verizon Premium and More Everything customers gain the ability to live stream local CBS and FOX games each Sunday, and that latter group has the option of tacking NFL Redzone for an extra $2/month. Android, iOS and Windows Phone apps have all been updated, so if your device hasn’t yet alerted you to the new goods, they’re available via the source links below.
