Android Wear watches are reportedly getting iPhone support

Moto 360 with the Classic watch face

If you carry an iPhone but would rather accessorize it with a Moto 360 than an Apple Watch, you might just get that choice without resorting to unofficial tricks. Sources for French outlet 01net claim that Google is “preparing to launch” an iOS version of its Android Wear app. There aren’t any other details, although it’s safe to say that third-party app support would require additional effort — it wouldn’t be an Android-to-Android connection any more, after all. This is very much a rumor and may not pan out, so don’t assume that you’ll be strapping on a Huawei Watch any time soon. With that said, Google isn’t strictly denying that something is afoot. The folks in Mountain View say they “don’t have anything to share at this time,” so hope springs eternal.

Samsung may be delaying any more smartwatches until the Apple Watch

Gear s wrist strapsIf there’s one thing Samsung is good at, it’s flooding a potential market with tons and tons of devices. The smartwatch market has been no exception, and the company has deluged consumers with multiple options to pair with their Galaxy devices. Remember, the Galaxy Gear launched at the end of 2013 with the Galaxy Note 3, and since then we’ve had the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, Gear Fit, Gear S, and Gear Live. For those of you keeping count at home, that’s about 6 devices in 18 months, which means they’re releasing a new watch roughly every quarter.

It would’ve made sense to see a new watch alongside the Galaxy S 6, but Samsung only announced an updated Gear VR for use with the newer devices. There could be many explanations for that, but some analysts seem to think it has everything to do with Apple’s upcoming smartwatch.

While Apple’s watch is slated for release next month, Samsung’s Young-hee Lee said that the company isn’t done making smartwatches, but they are instead taking a pause, considering they’ve released so many more products than any of their competitors. She says they want to developer a more “perfect product,” which likely just means Samsung wants to see what consumers do and don’t like about the Apple watch. It’s been a successful strategy for their smartphones and tablets, so it’s a sensible option for smartwatches, too.

For right now, you’ll have to settle with Samsung’s “older” models like the Gear S or Gear Live, but in a few months, it’s a safe bet we’ll see a handful of new Samsung wrist-computers hit the market.

Ingress for Android Wear is going to be a thing starting next month, says Niantic Labs

Gaming on Android Wear, as a whole, is pretty much non-existent. Whether you think games should be on wearable devices or not, it’s disappointing to see that not more developers have had a stab at innovating and appropriating games for smartwatches, but it appears Niantic Labs has already been busy behind the scenes. Ingress for Android […]

Omate’s smartwatch is the first to be assembled in Africa

When Omate announced its $99 Racer last month, little did we know that this rugged, near-circular smartwatch will be heading to Africa — Congo, Ivory Coast and Cameroon to begin with — this coming June. According to today’s announcement, this is all thanks to Congolese mobile startup VMK, who is already leading efforts to boost local smartphone penetration with affordable devices. Better yet, VMK will also be assembling the Africa edition Racer (plus future mobile devices) at its upcoming factory in the Republic of Congo, so unless someone else beats VMK to the race, this will be the first smartwatch to be assembled in Africa. Omate CEO Laurent Le Pen expects to sell 50,000 units in that continent alone this year, followed by plans to manufacture the whole device locally next year.

Pebble SDK 3.0 Developer Preview released with Pebble Time support and emulator

Pebble_Time_Color_Smartwatch_01

Just a few days after announcing its colour-screened Pebble Time smartwatch on KickStarter, Pebble has released a developer preview of its Pebble SDK 3.0. Pebble developers can download this new SDK via CloudPebble or install it on the PC. More details after the break.

Pebble_Time_Software_Interface_Animated_01Both versions of the Pebble SDK 3.0 include an emulator, along with support for the new hardware and colour screen. Apps built with this latest version of the SDK will be compatible with Pebble and Pebble Time. Pebble has made the transition as easy as possible, with only minor adjustments to be made to the application. Pebble has also made 64k of memory available to Pebble Time to help ease the transition. The resolution remains unchanged at 144 x 168.

Timeline is a new feature first unveiled on the Pebble Time and is expected to become supported by both the Pebble and Pebble Steel models later in the year. Other new features of the SDK include:

  • Support for 64 colours
  • New animation framework
  • PNG and animated PNG support in SDK
  • Detecting which platforms you are building for when it comes time to compile

You can download Pebble’s SDK 3.0 via the source link below.
