Someone got Android Wear running on Samsung’s Gear 2 watch

A Samsung Gear 2 running Android Wear

Don’t despair if you bought Samsung’s Gear 2 smartwatch, only to realize that you wanted the Android-powered Gear Live instead — there might be a solution in the works. XDA tinkerer biktor_gj has successfully loaded Android Wear on the Gear 2 after four months of work. It’s in a very rough state, as you might imagine. Only touch and rudimentary Bluetooth support are working right now. Android Wear doesn’t have an open source project the way that regular Android does, so any support for audio, the motion sensor and other features will likely be tricky to implement. Biktor is hopeful that he’ll get those working, however, and even this crude port is proof that your smartwatch isn’t necessarily limited to its original software.

The LG Watch Urbane is probably one of the hottest Android Wear devices that has ever been created. The Moto 360 is still top of the list for many who want Android Wear on a round faced device. Sure the LG G Watch R did it too, but not to the elegance of the Moto 360. The LG Watch Urbane on the other hand, has easily been responsible for some puddles of drool for many enthusiasts. The new watch did receive an official announcement this week that placed it in the Play Store by the end of the month with it gracing Korea today. Thanks to a source, we also have confirmation that the LG Watch Urbane will be landing on Verizon‘s network on April 28th for $349.99.

Are you going to be one of the first to buy the LG Watch Urbane, or are you going to hold off for a Moto 360 refresher?

The LG Watch Urbane has launched in Korea and it’s not really that expensive

LG announced earlier this week that its latest smartwatch, the LG Watch Urbane, was going to launch this week in Korea, and it has now done so overnight. Hosted on the Google Play Store, we’re now finally able to see what this new premium smartwatch from LG is going to cost, and surprisingly it doesn’t look like the premium-marketed smartwatch is going to break the bank. In equivalent US dollar terms, LG’s last smartwatch, the LG G Watch R, launched at about $332 and the LG Watch Urbane is going to cost a little more at $365. Whether that same difference in pricing carries over when it crosses the oceans is anybody’s guess, but it’s certainly not so much more that it makes it inaccessible to the average Android enthusiast.

As mentioned in LG’s announcement a few days ago, the LG Watch Urbane will be the first Android Wear device to get the latest update which introduces a spate of great new features including Wi-Fi support, which will allow your phone and watch to stay connected as long as your watch maintains a Wi-Fi connection and your phone has a mobile data connection. We’re interested to see how the watch is actually received when people start getting it into their hands so stay tuned.

Samsung’s round smartwatch in sight after announcing SDK for “Next Generation Gear”

We’ve known for some time now that Samsung has been working on a round smartwatch – the name ‘Orbis’ has been tossed around a lot when talking about Samsung’s round smartwatch. But today, we’ve gotten what is as good as official confirmation from Samsung itself that it’s working on a round smartwatch thanks to its announcement that it will be making available its latest software development kit (SDK) for its “Next Generation Gear”, accompanied by screenshots of a round smartwatch device.

Samsung's round smartwatchGiven that Samsung is releasing its own SDK suggests that the new round Gear device will be running Tizen once again, but this time it has the backing from several suitors including CBB, Yelp, Baidu, FidMe and Apposter to help it look more attractive to developers. Presumably this move is aimed at helping to drive more third party development on Samsung’s wearable platform, one of the traditional weakness of Samsung Gear line-up to date (except the Samsung Gear Live of course, which runs Android Wear). It’s an interesting move, and we’re excited to see what comes of it and what the device ends up looking like.

Apple Watch app roundup: It’s all on the wrist

It’s Apple Watch day. And whether you received one already, or are stuck waiting a few weeks for it, you’ll want apps to make the most out of your new wearable when the time comes. Thankfully, we here at Engadget are always thinking about you, the reader, so we’ve put together a list of third-party apps that stand out from the 3,000-plus expected to be available at launch. But first, let’s talk about some essentials. The Twitter and Instagram Apple Watch apps, for starters, will let you check out tweets and view photos right on your wrist, among other things. Sports fans, meanwhile, have access to apps like ESPN, MLB At Bat and NBA Game Time, which makes it easy to keep up with scores without having to pull out your iPhone.

The Apple Watch is going to play a big role for fitness buffs too, and there are a number of apps to choose from in that department: Misfit, Nike+ Running, Runtastic and RunKeeper, to mention a few. Travel often? Don’t worry: Delta and American Airlines, two of the most popular airlines, both have apps. Of course, you may also want to kill time every now and then; for those cases, there are games such as Rules!, a tiny puzzle designed to give your brain a workout, and Pantagu, a novel, fast-paced take on the classic Tic-Tac-Toe. Oh, and then there’s the Chipotle app. Because burritos.

We’ll be updating the list below as more companies and services make their iOS apps friendly with the Apple Watch, so make sure to bookmark this page for future use.

Samsung’s next smartwatch will be round

Samsung’s gearing up for the launch of its latest smartwatch by releasing its SDK ahead of the official reveal, which it has never done before. Devs might need some extra time to prep their applications for its release you see, since the newest Galaxy Gear will most likely have a rounded watch face unlike its older siblings’ rectangular ones. The press release announcing the SDK, spotted by Android Central, came a with a circle weather watch face graphic, along with a few images of rounded apps (CNN, Yelp and more). Sadly, there were no hints in the PR indicating when the new device will be launched. But if you’re really hankering for a rounded smartwatch, there’s already a few out on the market, including the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch R.

Apple Watch App Store is ready to equip your device upon arrival

If you’ve already ordered Apple’s smartwatch, it should arrive sometime in the next few weeks. To prep for that delivery, the App Store’s selection of Watch-specific apps is available for browsing on the web or with that trusty iOS device. The Wall Street Journal reports that over 3,000 software options now reside in iTunes, ready to outfit the wearable with tools for keeping tabs on scores, fitness data, news, social channels, payments and more. Of course, if you haven’t secured one yet, you won’t be able to nab the gadget at your local retail store tomorrow, so you’ll have to wait until it arrives by mail.

LG Watch Urbane coming to Google Store soon

lg watch urbane aa 16

The Watch Urbane, G Watch R’s swanky-looking brother, is finally hitting stores, two months after its official unveiling.

LG announced earlier that the Watch Urbane will be landing in South Korea this week at an unspecified price, with customers in twelve other countries to get the option to buy it from this month through Google Store (formerly the hardware section of the Play Store). LG said that details about availability and price will be released when the phone actually goes on sale, though we expect a higher price tag than the $300 the G Watch R goes for.

The Watch Urbane shares with the G Watch R the 1.3-inch OLED display, Snapdragon 400 processor, 4GB of storage and 410 mAh battery. The differences are largely cosmetic, with the Urbane sporting a more sophisticated, less aggressive design that should appeal to more users.

Autoplay

When autoplay is enabled videos will start playing automatically, you can turn off autoplay by clicking checkbox.

The Watch Urbane will be the first smartwatch to get Android Wear 5.1, announced on Monday, which brings Wi-Fi support, always-on apps, and interface changes. The Urbane will ship with 5.1 out of the box.

Will you be getting the Watch Urbane when it becomes available?

The LG Watch Urbane will be the first Android Wear smartwatch to get new update

LG has today announced that the LG Watch Urbane will be the first Android Wear device to receive and be sold with the latest Android Wear update that we detailed a few days ago. Not to be confused with the similarly named LG Watch Urbane LTE which doesn’t run Android Wear, the LG Watch Urbane will start being sold this week in LG’s native Korea, gradually rolling out in other markets including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, the UK and the US, and it will be available right from the Google Play Store. There’s still been no word on pricing, but we’d be surprised if it got much more than $300 USD, which is pushing it in this current wearable climate.

For those who have forgotten what the LG Watch Urbane is all about (including us), it’s LG latest Android Wear device which incorporates a stainless steel body with genuine leather strap for LG’s most premium smartwatch yet. Inside, though, it’s almost identical to LG’s previous two smartwatches, the LG G Watch and LG G Watch R, though LG is touting two new features available only on the Urbane including LG Call and LG Pulse, the former for making calling easier and the latter for much more accurate fitness tracking.

What do you think about the LG Watch Urbane? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Press Release

PREMIUM LG WATCH URBANE FIRST NEW
ANDROID WEAR DEVICE TO FEATURE LATEST OSElegantly Designed Smartwatch Rolls Out Worldwide
With Latest Technology and Performance
SEOUL, Apr. 23, 2015 LG Electronics (LG) will begin the global rollout of its premium LG Watch Urbane this week in South Korea to be followed by key markets in North America, Europe and Asia in the weeks to come. Customers in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States will be able to purchase the LG Watch Urbane on Google Store starting this month. At MWC 2015, the LG Watch Urbane received numerous awards and accolades from consumers, media and industry thought leaders for its modern design, full-circle Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display and overall usefulness. The LG Watch Urbane carries over the 1.3-inch P-OLED display from the LG G Watch R but features a less prominent and lower profile bezel. Its dimensions are smaller overall and thinner, without reducing the size of the display or the battery.

Responding to consumers’ desire for style as well as function, the LG Watch Urbane has a full metal body with a stitched genuine leather strap. The stainless steel body is available in a luxurious polished rose gold and silver, accentuated further with a narrow bezel that gives the device the sleek lines of a classic timepiece. Unlike many other competing smartwatches, the band can be exchanged with any replacement 22mm leather, silicone or metal strap for the ultimate in convenience and personalization.

LG Watch Urbane is the first new smartwatch powered by the latest version of Android Wear which works seamlessly with smartphones running Android 4.3 and above. Some of the features available for the first time on any Android Wear device include Wi-Fi connectivity, always-on apps to keep the display from going dark when running, navigating or even grocery shopping and an improved UX that makes launching favorite apps and getting in touch with friends easier than ever before with everything now front-and-center.

The latest OS allows users to send emojis by drawing them directly on the LG Watch Urbane. Draw a smiley face, a clock showing a certain time or any other pictures and Android Wear will match your drawing to the closest Unicode emoji for sending to another Android Wear watch, smartphone, or computer. Other improvements include the ability to change the font size and see notifications even when looking at another function on the display, such as directions. What’s more, the screen on the LG Watch Urbane can now be set to lock automatically when it is removed from the wrist.

Included in LG Watch Urbane are two new and useful features not available on other Android Wear devices: LG Call and LG Pulse. LG Call allows the wearer to access recent calls and the favorite contacts list on the connected smartphone to dial out directly from the watch. When connected to a Bluetooth headset, there is no need to remove the phone from one’s pocket to place a call. And LG Pulse takes health monitoring to a whole new level by measuring the wearer’s heart rate every second during exercise with no maximum time limit. At the end of the activity, LG Pulse will report the average heart rate over the entire duration of the activity and display a heart rate graph on LG Health (coming soon).

“The LG Watch Urbane is the third Android Wear device introduced by LG in the past year which demonstrates our commitment to this platform,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “More importantly, LG Watch Urbane is a perfect example that Android Wear watches can be functional and beautiful and a useful accessory that complements any wardrobe. No one would mistake LG Watch Urbane for a computer on your wrist.”

Price and additional purchase details will be announced locally at the time of availability.
