Yesterday, the ASUS ZenWatch 2 was announced at Computex 2015, and for the most part looks like a very nice evolution over its predecessor. Keeping mostly the same form factor, the ZenWatch 2 now offers more customization options including 2 body size variants, 3 body colours and an assortment of first-party accessories to spruce up your watch band. As the event has gone on, we’ve found out about a few more features of the ZenWatch 2, in particular the fact that it boasts 4 days of battery life. Compared to a conventional watch, it seems almost ludicrous to glorify 4 days of battery, but in the Android Wear world, 4 days is almost an eternity – we’ll have to see if the production models actually do this when they are actually released.

The ZenWatch 2 also introduces a digital crown, however this only appears to operate as a power button. There are also quite a few improvements to what existed on the original ZenWatch, such as improvements to the remote camera viewfinder feature which lets you see what your camera is seeing all on your watch. We’re interested to see the verdict about the ZenWatch 2 when reviews start pouring in because it seems like ASUS has made lots of little tweaks that should make its latest smartwatch an even better companion.

The Carrera Wearable 01 will be TAG Heuer’s first Android Wear device

KD11057

Luxury watch maker TAG Heuer’s high-end Android Wear device isn’t slated to launch until November 2015, but it looks like a few early details are starting to surface regarding the wearable. In an interview with Wearable, TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver outed that the company’s first Android Wear device would be called the Carrera Wearable 01. The Wearable 01 will be largely influenced by the recently-launched Carrera Heuer 01 (pictured above).

The CEO explains:

There is no other choice for Tag Heuer than to have all its DNA, all its watchmaking emotion and flair into the connected watch. Somehow, one should not see from a certain distance the difference between a Carrera Heuer 01 and a Carrera Wearable 01.

Not only are we given a hint as to what the new wearable will look like, the report also implies that the Carrera Wearable 01 may be able to withstand the test of time. TAG Heuer’s UK communications manager Alexandra King talks about the potential lifespan of the device:

If your child completed their Masters degree, you might want to give them a watch. We want to create something that will stay on your watch for a lifetime, that’s what Tag Heuer does. And as the technology changes, it will change.

No clarification was given regarding King’s statements, so it looks like we’ll have to wait until the wearable’s launch later this year to find out more. According to past reports, the smartwatch is slated to launch for around $1,400 and potentially come with a 40-hour battery life.

So, what are your thoughts on the wearable so far? If the Carrera Wearable 01 turns out to look just like the Carrera Heuer 01, could this be a viable option for you?

Tag Heuer names its first Android Wear Device, the Carrera Wearable 01

tag_heuer_google_intel_partnership

Tag Heuer, the watch company famous for its high-quality (and very expensive) Swiss-made watches, has unveiled the name of its first Android Wear watch, the Carrera Wearable 01.

The watch, according to Tag Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver, will be upgradable “for a lifetime,” and will cost around $14,000. Powered by Intel silicon, the watch will run the latest version of Android Wear. As for the “lifetime” upgradability, we’re not so sure what this entails, but Biver says the watch will be upgradable as time goes on and technology matures. The goal is to have the watch “last a lifetime.”

Expect a Q4 release for the Carrera Wearable 01.

ASUS announces the ASUS ZenWatch 2 at Computex with more sizes and a new button

Right on the heels of Google I/O, as usual, is Computex, Asia’s version of Mobile World Congress, and ASUS has kicked off in typical style with the announcement of several heavy hitting devices. Chief among these is a new Android Wear smartwatch, the ASUS ZenWatch 2, the follow up its original ZenWatch and was introduced with a number of things that make it seem quite a lot like another recently released smartwatch (read: the Apple Watch).

ASUS ZenWatch 2The similarities begin with the ZenWatch 2 being offered in two different size variants, with 22mm and 18mm watch band versions – no doubt this is probably to cater for the female audience who generally have the smaller wrists. Overally, the ZenWatch 2 doesn’t look too dissimilar to its predecessor – the curved glass over the display returns, but is now joined by a button on the side, which kind of makes sense for a watch but almost looks ungainly on the sleek ZenWatch 2 profile.

In terms of colour choice, you’ll be able to select from either a silver, gunmetal or rose-gold body as well as a number of different straps made from rubber, leather, metal or even a crystal encrusted watch band. That’s all the details we have right now, but no doubt more information will become available as Computex wears on.

ASUS ZenWatch 2 gives your phone’s battery a tiny boost

It’s only been half a year since we reviewed the stylish ZenWatch, but ASUS is already back with its second attempt in the Android Wear space. At Computex, the company announced the appropriately named ZenWatch 2 which, unlike its predecessor, comes in two sizes: one to go with 22mm straps like before, and the other with smaller 18mm straps. If you go with the larger one, you’ll get a bonus feature: it can actually double as a tiny mobile power bank to give your phone some emergency juice! ASUS hasn’t quite explained how this will be implemented, but we imagine there’ll be a special cable involved.

While the overall designs are similar to that of the original model, ASUS has now added a button on the side, though we prefer the cleaner look without it. As to what it does, we’ll come back to that when we hear more. Like before, both versions of the ZenWatch 2 feature an AMOLED screen with a piece of 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass 3 on top, and they are powered by an unnamed Qualcomm processor — hopefully one that will at least add another day’s worth of battery life.

For those looking for other excuses to upgrade from the previous model to this, the latter does have an improved dust and water resistance rating of IP67 (same as its fitness-centric counterpart, the VivoWatch). It comes with a more convenient magnetic charger cable instead of the old snap-on plastic cradle, and the recharge time has apparently been improved as well. On the software side, the ZenWatch 2 has an improved Remote Camera feature to go with your phone, and it’ll also work with a “completely redesigned” ASUS Wellness smartphone app for tracking your running and cycling activities.

As for customization, this time you get three colors instead of just one for the body: silver, gunmetal and rose-gold. Similarly, ASUS will be offering a range of straps made out of rubber, soft leather and metal in different colors. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’ll be an optional leather strap with Swarovski crystals embedded all over it.

There’s no price nor launch date just yet for the ZenWatch 2, but keep your eyes on here as we’ll likely hear more at Computex.

The Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01 will be the official name of Tag Heuer’s smartwatch

There’s one smartwatch that we’re very interested to see when it eventually shows its face: the Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01. That’s the official name that has been dropped today courtesy of Tag Heuer CEO, Jean-Claude Biver, and continues the branding that Tag Heuer has established with the Carrera range. In fact, it appears that the Carrera Wearable 01 will take many of its visual cues from its more mechanical brethren – as Biver says “Somehow, one should not see from a certain distance the difference between a Carrera Heuer 01 and a Carrera Wearable 01.

What’s most interesting about this device is that Tag Heuer is probably the first to consider the longevity of its smartwatch beyond its yearly refresh. Citing the possibility of interchangeable parts, UK communications manager, Alexandra King, said: “If your child completed their Masters degree, you might want to give them a watch. We want to create something that will stay on your watch for a lifetime, that’s what Tag Heuer does. And as the technology changes, it will change.

Personally, I can’t wait to see how this watch turns out, but if you’re hoping to shell out for this one, you’ll need some deep pockets – the Carrera Wearable 01 is going to cost at least $1,400 sometime this October or November. What do you think about the Tag Heuer Carrera Wearable 01? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Volvo’s On Call app can control your car from a smartwatch

Sure, you drive a Volvo and not an Aston Martin, but that doesn’t mean you can’t pretend to be a charming spy who controls his car with a high-tech watch. Volvo will soon release its On Call app for Android Wear devices and the Apple Watch, after all, and it comes with all the features its predecessors for tablets and smartphones have. That means you can poke around your arm candy to remotely lock or unlock the car’s doors, switch on the heater or air conditioner and check fuel and mileage. You can also ask it for help if your Volvo’s lost in a sea of cars in a parking lot. And just like the older apps, it quickly connects you to an operator, who then tracks your location through GPS, if your airbags get deployed. Volvo wrapped the smartwatch apps in a new design based on the Sensus connected interface, but you’ll have to wait until the end of June before you can give them a spin.

Now that Google I/O 2015 is over, where was the new Moto 360?

style=”display:block”

data-ad-slot=”8461248232″

Rumours are never an exact science, but we like to think that rumours coupled with history make some pretty accurate predictions. Unfortunately, our predictions for an announcement of the new Moto 360 did not come true at Google I/O 2015 with the event winding up today, which poses the question: when are we going to see the new Moto 360? We had thought an announcement was imminent as a Motorola device codenamed BTMW03 visited Bluetooth SIG just two weeks ago – spin the clocks back one year, and a Motorola device codenamed BTMW01 visited Bluetooth SIG days before it was announced by Motorola, and took on a starring role at Google I/O 2014.

Here’s what else we think know so far. The new Moto 360 is internally codenamed “Smelt”, after the delta smelt species of fish – the original Moto 360 was codenamed “Minnow”, which is probably somewhat of a lingering artifact from Motorola’s time under Google. We’ve also had suggestions that the new Moto 360 would be announced “early” in 2015, but with June bearing down on us, “early” seems like it’s going out the door pretty quick. At this point, with many of our previous rumours fading away, we’re stumped as to when Motorola might be making an announcement for the new Moto 360, so we’ll just have to go back to being patient.

When do you think the new Moto 360 is going to be announced? Let us know your guess in the comments below.

Apple says the Watch’s irregular heart rate tracking is intentional

The Apple Watch heart rate Glance

When Apple trotted out its first update for the Watch, fitness mavens were alarmed at the suddenly inconsistent heart rate tracking. Did Cupertino break one of its wearable’s signature features? Well, not quite. Apple has posted an updated support page that indicates the change in heart tracking was intentional. Instead of getting your beats per minute every 10 minutes regardless of what you’re doing, its new default behavior is to check only when you’re staying still. You can still make the Watch check on the move by using the heart rate Glance (above) or starting an activity in the Workout app, but the change risks creating gaps when you’re strolling down the street.

It’s not clear why Apple changed its device’s monitoring habits. There’s speculation that the company did this to improve the Watch’s battery life, but it’s not clear that this is the case — it could be for the sake of accuracy, for example. We’ve reached out to Apple for an explanation, and we’ll let you know if it has more to say.
