Moto 360 (2015) vs Huawei Watch: The battle for the most watch-like smartwatch

It’s taken a while until the next wave of smartwatches to emerge.  This year’s IFA turned out to be a good point in the year for some of the premier smartwatches to strut their stuff.  If we recall what we’ve seen, one battle that is clearly ensuing is between Motorola and Huawei.  That is, the Moto 360 (2015) and Huawei Watch, respectively.

DSC02172
DSC02084

These two smartwatches most aim for a traditional watch design, and even the luxurious kind.  Both OEM’s have customizations that cover cases and bands that we have seen in normal watches for ages.  And both smartwatches run Android Wear, with very similar specs.  So which one comes out on top?

Huawei Watch

DSC02070

When Huawei introduced the its Watch earlier this year, you could tell they were hot on Motorola’s heels for a premium smartwatch design.  The similarities run from the circular metal case to the variety of band materials and colors.

DSC02068

Only, Huawei is on its first attempt, while Motorola is now on its 2nd iteration.  Does that mean that Motorola is ahead?  I’m not sure.

First, Huawei is able to utilize the entire circular watch face for the display.  Motorola chose not to ditch the small flat tire non-screen portion on the bottom of the display, which houses sensors.  Motorola explained that moving it would result in either more bezel or a thicker watch chassis.

So then how do the screen-to-bezel ratios and thicknesses compare?  The Moto 360 has a 71.1% screen-to-bezel ratio while the Huawei Watch is at 80%.  And the Moto 360 has 11.4mm thickness while the Huawei Watch is a hair thinner at 11.3mm.

DSC02087                                        Huawei Watch
DSC02161                                        Moto 360 (2015)

It would appear that Huawei has the win here, but we can’t forget that the Moto 360 has wireless charging and an ambient light sensor.  The Huawei Watch charges via pin contacts, similar to LG’s approach.  It comes down to what the consumer prefers.

The Huawei Watch is powered by a Snapdragon 400 SoC, have 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage.  The display is 1.4″ in size (case is 42mm) and uses an AMOLED panel with 400×400 resolution (286 ppi).  The band size is 22mm (lug width of 18mm).  The screen is protected by Sapphire Crystal glass rather than Gorilla Glass.  And the battery capacity is 300mAh.

The watch chassis is stainless steel and comes in silver, black, or gold colors (which can also have a texture on the bezel ring).  For bands, we have metal and leather choices.  There is a unique metal mesh strap, along with the more common metal link.  The bands are easily swappable, via a pin-release switch near the connection of the band to the lugs.

Moto 360 (2015)

DSC02171

Motorola is well known to give consumers choice.  With the Moto 360 sequel, we are given size options.  There is now a smaller variant, which is 42mm, the same size as the Huawei Watch.  Therefore, if you want a larger screen, your only option then becomes the 46mm Moto 360.

The 2015 Moto 360 uses a similar lug system as the Huawei Watch, and the band is easily removable in the same manner.

DSC02168

The larger Moto 360 uses a 22mm band while the smaller variant uses a 20mm band (there is also a “womens” version, which can don a 16mm band).

To keep the thickness the same on the smaller variant (11.4mm), Motorola made a cut on the battery, 300mAh as opposed 400mAh on the larger model.  Recall that the Huawei Watch has a 300mAh battery.

Most specs are the same between both Moto 360’s and the Huawei Watch:  Snapdragon 400 SoC, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage.  The Moto 360 cases are of course stainless steel and also come in silver, black, or gold colors.  Bands also come in metal links and leather, in different colors.

However, the displays are quite different.  The larger Moto 360 has a 1.56″ screen and 360×330 resolution (233 ppi), while the smaller model has a 1.37″ screen and 360×325 resolution (263 ppi).  Huawei has the upper hand in pixel density.  Also, Motorola went with IPS screen technology and Gorilla Glass 3 for protection.

Last, but certainly not least, is the price.  The Huawei Watch starts at $350 for silver watch case and plain black leather band.  Unfortunately, the price steeply increases with the other materials.  For instance, a black case finish and black metal link band is $100 more.  If you want the gold finish and alligator-textured leather or pink metal link band, it’d be $699 or $799, respectively.

The Moto 360 pricing is more forgiving.  The larger variant is $50 more than the smaller one.  The metal link bands add $50 (in any color).  Only the gold case color is $30 more.

Which smartwatch are you most sold on?

Infographic: Samsung shows off the Gear S2’s circular design and intuitive interface

Samsung_GearS2_SmartWatch_Tizen (2)

One device we were looking to seeing announced at IFA 2015 was Samsung’s Gear S2 smartwatch, and we weren’t disappointed. It may be running Tizen firmware instead of the Android Wear that many of us might prefer, but it sure looks like Samsung made a real effort with the Gear S2’s design, its circular face looks very pleasing to the eye. Of course, just because it’s been announced, doesn’t mean that Samsung will take it easy. This is Samsung we are talking about, after all, and as such, we shouldn’t be surprised that its marketing department is on the ball, showing off some of the Gear S2’s features in an infographic which can be seen after the break

Alcatel reveals the rugged GO Play smartphone and GO Watch wearable at IFA 2015

It’s still IFA 2015, and today we have Alcatel announcing its new line of waterproof, dustproof, and even shockproof devices forming its ‘GO’ series. The GO Play is a smartphone, while as you might expect, the GO Watch is a smartwatch. We have more details after the break.

Let’s deal with the GO Play smartphone first, an all plastic smartphone that carries an IP67 rating, which means it is dust proof as well being waterproof up to a depth of 1m. Alcatel state that the GO Play is also impervious to drops from a height up to 1.5 metres, which combined with the waterproofing and dust proofing, along with the bright colours, gives the impression that the GO Play is aimed at the young at heart.

Specifications:

  • Android 5.0 Lollipop
  • 5-Inch 720p display
  • Snapdragon 410 Quad-core processor @1.2GHz
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB Internal storage (4GB free space)
  • MicroSD card support (upto 32GB)
  • 8MP Rear camera with flash
  • 5MP Front-facing camera
  • 2,500mAh battery
  • 8.3 Hours of talk time/20 days of standby time/ 55 hours of music playback
  • Available in dark grey, dark red, dark green, orange/blue, pink, lime green, blue, and orange

Next up, we have the GO Watch, which is also brightly coloured and plasticky. Like the GO Play, the GO Watch boasts an IP67 rating, giving protection from water and dust.

Specifications:

  • 1.22-Inch display with 240 x 204 resolution
  • 180MHz Cortex M4 processor
  • Android and iOS compatible
  • SNS, SMS, emails, calls and weather notifications
  • 225mAh Battery (2-5 Days battery life)
  • Customizable wristbands and front casing
  • Heart-rate sensor
  • MicroUSB charging port

The Go Watch’s main claim to fame is its ability to measure emotional pulses. Yup. You read that correctly. Apparently, if you press the ‘GO’ button on the front of the device, an ‘emotional graphic will be created based on the input from the gyroscope, heart-rate sensor and accelerometer.’ You can then share this emotion pulse measurement on social networks or set it as a wallpaper on the device. As previously stated, the GO series appears to be aimed at the younger people, who probably won’t connect the GO Watch’s similarity in appearance with the Casio G-Shock watches.

At present, Alcatel hasn’t revealed any details in terms of availability and pricing for the GO series. What do you think of the GO Play and GO Watch devices? Let us know in the comments if you will.

Samsung Pay will come to the Gear S2 this November

In addition to cross-manufacturer compatibility, Samsung announced that Samsung Pay will be coming to the Gear S2 sometime in November. This will be possible due to the fact that there will be a Gear S2-specific application built into the smartwatch for easy use.

In order to keep your Gear S2 from being used for malicious purposes, Samsung has a two-step verification process built-in.

  • The watch continuously monitors your heart rate, so if you haven’t taken the watch off since the last time you authorized it for payments it’ll be painless to walk up to a PoS terminal and pay.
  • If the watch was removed from your wrist since the last time you made a payment, it will ask for a personalized PIN that you set up to authorize the next payment, and won’t ask again until the next time you take the watch off.

Finally, you will be able to use the Gear S2 with 3G capabilities with Samsung Pay even if your Gear S2 isn’t connected to your device. These are some awesome updates coming out of Samsung that aren’t even all the way related to Samsung phones.

Let us know what you think about these features of the Gear S2 in the comments down below. Will you be picking one of these up once they are ready for purchase?

Motorola refines the Moto 360 by tailoring the smartwatch for everyone

motorola_moto_360_2015_launch_mens_womens_TA

The world is full of rectangular displays, but the original Moto 360 actually resembled a traditional watch with its display’s round shape. Motorola pushed engineering boundaries with the design of last year’s standout smartwatch. Now the company is back with a new, refined Moto 360 that is made the way you want it. The Moto 360 may have not changed too much since its debut, yet you’ll notice that customization is as important as ever to Motorola.

Since Android Wear devices are typically similar, here is a quick rundown of key specifications:

  • 1.37- (360×325) or 1.56-inch (360×330) display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 4GB of internal storage
  • 300mAh or 400mAh battery (with wireless charging)
  • Optical heart rate monitor

The way in which bands are attached to Motorola’s smartwatch has changed with the inclusion of lugs. Bands have a quick-release switch to easily remove and replace them.

Both men and women now have the option purchase a Moto 360 that was designed specifically for them. The smartwatch now comes in two sizes: 42mm and 46mm. Men can choose from either size while women, if they so choose to buy based on the recommend size for their gender, are offered only the 42mm size. The design choices, too, differ for men and women. Rather than having the men’s Chamfer and Micro Knurl bezel treatments, women are able to choose between peak and micro etch looks. And, of course, women are offered the Rose Gold case color and bezel color instead of the men’s black.

Moto Body, which Motorola calls “a holistic experience that helps you lead a healthier lifestyle,” acts as the Moto 360’s health and fitness companion service. It actively tracks steps taken, monitors heart rate, and measures calories burned. An exclusive feature brought to the Moto 360 is Live Dials. Shortcuts to your most-used apps are pinned right on the watch face.

Motorola, Best Buy, and the Google Store have the Moto 360 available for pre-order starting today. Nordstrom, Best Buy, and Verizon retail stores will then selling the smartwatch in late September. Based on your design, prices range from $299-$429.

Sony Japan crowdfunds stylish Wena smartwatch

Sony Wena Wrist smartwatch

A couple of months ago, Sony launched its own crowdfunding platform, named First Flight, in Japan to help fund some of its new product ideas and the company has just posted a nice looking new smartwatch up on the website. Known as the “Wena Wrist”, the smartwatch shares a lot more in common with your typical wrist watch than the gadgets that we’ve become familiar with.

Unlike other smartwatches, the Wena Wrist doesn’t feature a display. Instead, it comes with a traditional analogue clock face, complete with actual hands. The smartwatch is packed with other pieces of technology though. There’s NFC compatibility for use with the FeliCa contact-less payment system in Japan, notifications from your phone can be received through a vibrator motor inside the watch and there’s a customizable LED light for extra alerts.

Zoom_Silver_3hands_800

Back_Silver_3hands_800
Front_Black_3hands_800

The Wena Wrist also supports the regular set of fitness tracking options, including steps made and calories burnt off in the day. A companion app can also be used to set targets and track your progress over time. The smartwatch is also rated for water resistance, a nice added bonus for the fitness enthusiast.

Interestingly, the smartwatch is built in two halves. The smart electronic parts of the watch are housed entirely in the wristband and can be charged up separately. The watch face will last anywhere from 3 to 5 years without a battery replacement, while the band can be detached and will need charging up approximately once a week.

This isn’t the first time that Sony has turned to group funding to scrape up investment for a new smartwatch idea. The company’s e-ink FES smartwatch appeared as a pre-order on the website a few months back.

The Wena Wrist is available for pre-order in Japan through First Flight, with prices ranging from ¥34,800 ($287) for a silver Three Hands model up to ¥69,800 ($576) for the Chronograph version in black. The smartwatch is expected to ship out to backers in March or April of 2016.

What do you think about Sony’s analogue smartwatch?

Users can easily change the band with one click, and change the watch face for a more personalized and sophisticated Gear experience depending on the time, place or occasion.

We’ve just got news that T-Mobile will let you add your Samsung Gear S2 3G to your phone plan for $5/month under what it calls the “Un-carrier wearable rate plan”. According to T-Mobile, this includes:

  • Unlimited talk and text
  • Up to 500MB of high-speed data a month with NO overages
  • Unlimited music streaming with services like Samsung Milk Music and more so you can leave your Samsung Galaxy phone at home when you’re out on a run or running errands

LG reveals the Watch Urbane Luxe with 23-karat gold and a $1,200 price tag

lg-watch-urbane-luxe-officialLG has announced a 23-karat gold version of the Watch Urbane in a fairly limited capacity, called the Watch Urbane Luxe. The watch stands up to some other premium wristwatches and includes an alligator leather strap and a hefty $1,200 price tag.

The watch is being produced in collaboration with REEDS Jewelers, and a supply of 500 watches will be up for pre-order on REEDS’ website. They’ll be available to purchase in retail stores in October.

LG WATCH URBANE LUXE, AN EXQUISITE SMARTWATCH

Limited Edition Device from LG is More Jewelry Than Wearable

SEOUL, Aug. 31, 2015 ― In collaboration with U.S. retail jewelry company REEDS Jewelers, LG Electronics (LG) will introduce a premium limited edition smartwatch, LG Watch Urbane Luxe. This luxurious wearable was designed with a specific wearer in mind and is adorned in 23-karat gold and gorgeous alligator leather strap set in an exclusive piano-gloss lacquer case. Available starting at the end of October, the LG Watch Urbane Luxe will retail for approximately USD 1,200.

The LG Watch Urbane Luxe will sport a deployment clasp for a fitted, elegant look that isn’t bulky. Invented by Louis Cartier in 1910, the use of a deployment clasp makes this timepiece even more exclusive and unique. The alligator band itself is handcrafted at the highest level of craftsmanship, undergoing 50 separate steps in its creation, handled lovingly by 30 experienced leatherworkers. The 23-karat gold used in the LG Watch Urbane Luxe is stronger and harder than the 24-karat gold used in jewelry and heavier than the 18-karat gold used in traditional luxury watches.

“Wearable devices shouldn’t be thought of as an extension of one’s smartphone but an extension of oneself,” said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications Company. “This blending of craftsmanship and technology is a natural evolution of the smartwatch, which is becoming more of a lifestyle accessory than a piece of hardware. We think this is a good direction for wearables and we want to encourage this transformation.”

Each of the 500 limited edition watches will be engraved with its own serial number for authenticity and available initially in the USA for pre-order at http://www.REEDS.com later this month or by visiting any REEDS Jewelers location. Visitors to IFA 2015 can see this beautiful work of art for themselves along with other mobile devices from LG in Hall 18 of Messe Berlin from September 4-9.
