LoopPay gets breached by Chinese hackers

looppay_logoThe widely acceptable contact-less payment service, Samsung Pay, may be in danger. LoopPay, the service behind Samsung Pay, experienced a hack coming from a group of Chinese hackers.

The breach gave the hackers access to LoopPay’s secure computer systems. According to NY Times, the hack took place last March well before the acquisition of Samsung and LoopPay was made. Samsung made a statement regarding the security breach and said nothing was effected and nobody’s information is at risk. The company mentioned the attack was an “isolated incident that targeted the LoopPay corporate network, which is a physically separate network from Samsung Pay.” Giving users some relief.

As of now, there’s no specific evidence that any information had been stolen. However, one should be alerted to what has happened. Samsung and LoopPay are currently investigating the breach.

Recent Samsung Galaxy models star in two new TV advertisements

samsung_galaxy_s6_edge_plus_galaxy_note_5_front_display_on_TAThere is no doubt that Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ are among the best smartphones available to date. Just this morning, the Korean tech giant released two new TV advertisements.

These aren’t the first commercials for Samsung’s new devices. Both the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ went on sale last month in countries all over the world. Apparently, the company felt the need for two additional TV ads further reminding people of the newest devices they have to offer. Each ad shows off a different feature making the device better than the rest. One for each smartphone. These features include the amazingly detailed Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ camera, in addition to the beautiful display and S Pen features that come included on the Galaxy Note 5. You can check them out in the embedded YouTube videos down below.

Chinese hackers attacked the company behind Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay on a Galaxy S6 Edge+

A notorious group of state-sponsored Chinese hackers reportedly broke into the computer systems of LoopPay, the company that created the tech used in Samsung Pay. According to the NYT, the breach by the so-called Codoso Group occurred in March, well before Samsung acquired LoopPay for $250 million. The technology forms the core of Samsung’s mobile payment system, which launched in the US on September 28th. However, Samsung says that “Samsung Pay was not impacted and at no point was any personal payment information at risk.”

Experts contacted by the NYT aren’t sure there’s enough evidence yet to back that statement, however. For starters, LoopPay never discovered the breach itself — the company’s info was actually spotted by a third party probing the Codoso hackers for a separate attack. As a result, the group, which is allegedly backed by the Chinese government, was inside LoopPay’s corporate system for nearly five months. And Codoso has a reputation for leaving backdoors, allowing them to return for another attack, as Forbes and Microsoft found out earlier this year during a breach.

However, LoopPay said that there’s no evidence that the group has stolen any customer data or financial information. Samsung said that the attack was an “isolated incident that targeted the LoopPay corporate network, which is a physically separate network (from Samsung Pay).” Nevertheless, LoopPay launched an investigation just over a month before the payment system was launched in the US — an insufficient period to thoroughly investigate a hack, according to a recent security study.

Barnes and Noble’s Galaxy Tab E Nook is yet another tablet for readers

If you’re a fan of Barnes & Noble’s Nook line of e-readers and tablets, there’s a new option to tempt you this fall. The Galaxy Tab E Nook is a 9.6-inch slate that offers all of the perks of the bookseller’s digital library in a Samsung package. While the front features a familiar-looking Galaxy design, the back is covered in “a non-slip fabric-like material” to ensure you’re able to keep a good grip during long reads. Inside, there’s 16GB of built-in storage that’s expandable to 128GB via mircoSD to store your books and other items. Unfortunately, storage is about the only info on the gadget’s internals the announcement reveals. Like previous Nook by Samsung releases, this one is more than just an e-reader, allowing you to watch movies, stream TV shows and browse the web with Android apps.

Speaking of browsing the web, Samsung’s handy Multi-Window feature handles split-screen duties so you can multi-task with ease. And if you need to take a photo, there’s 5-megapixel rear-facing and 2-megapixel front-facing cameras to take care of those. This Nook also comes pre-loaded with Microsoft Office and touts up to 12 hours of continuous video playback before needing to recharge. Ready to take the leap? The Galaxy Tab E Nook is available now for $250. If you act before November 7th, though, Barnes & Noble will let you trade-in “select” Nook, Kindle, iPad and Samsung devices for up to $200 credit towards that purchase.

Barnes & Noble Samsung Galaxy Tab E NOOK

Barnes & Noble has teamed up with Samsung yet again to bring us a new NOOK branded tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab E NOOK. This new device features Samsung’s familiar design language on the hardware front, while providing the same software experience that’s normally found in NOOK tablets. It comes with a special non-slip, fabric-like material on the back of the tablet, which should make for a comfortable, secure grip. It also comes with a 9.6-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800. It features a 5MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP front camera, 16GB of on-board storage and microSD expansion up to 128GB.

On the software side of things, the Galaxy Tab E NOOK comes with NOOK Profiles, so each member of your family can have their own customized reading and entertainment experience. Parents can also set up profiles for their children with kid-friendly NOOK content. For the most part, the software experience will be very similar to what’s offered in other NOOK devices. The E NOOK does come with Samsung’s great Multi-Window feature, which is definitely an added bonus.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab E NOOK is being offered for $249.99 from Barnes & Noble’s website. Especially considering the specs, this probably isn’t the best $250 you could spend on a tablet, but it may be a decent option if you’re looking for something the whole family can enjoy. Samsung Galaxy S7 may get third processor variant

samsung_exynos_banner

When Samsung launched the Galaxy S6 this year, the company took a bit of a different route from previous flagship launches in that only a single chip was used, their own Exynos processor. Previous versions of the Galaxy S devices were generally released with two versions, one using an Exynos chip and one using a Snapdragon chip depending on the market. Although previous reports indicate Samsung has been working hard on preparing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip for use in next year’s Galaxy S7, rumors recently surfaced suggesting Samsung was going back to the familiar strategy that involves some markets getting Exynos equipped devices. The latest rumor indicates Samsung may use two different Exynos processors, bringing the number of variants up to three for the first time.

Sources believe Samsung will use their Exynos 7422 chips, which were originally planned to power the Galaxy Note 5, in Galaxy S7 devices that will be sold in India. Meanwhile, the Exynos 8890 will be used in units destined for the Korean, Japanese and some European markets. The U.S. and Chinese markets will get devices that come with the Snapdragon 820 chips inside.

Tablet demand is weak and shipments are falling, sources say

nexus_9_display_bottom_TA

Tablets have never been a strong point when it comes to Android, and it seems that manufactures agree with intentions to begin phasing out various tablet-IC businesses, according to Taiwanese industry sources.

Shipments of tablets running Android could be less than 160 million units in 2015, according to sources. These same sources predict that numbers could fall to as low as 120 million in 2016. While 120 million is a staggering number for a years worth of sales, it’s really nothing to write home over. After all, Android tablets are created by many different companies, all pricing their tablets at different levels, mostly at very low prices.

Many vendors are leaving the tablet-IC market due to these low prices simply because they’re seeing low profits and low demand. Interestingly, despite these findings, competition between tablet chip makers remains high, according to the report from Digitimes. There’s no official confirmation, but this could largely be due to some of the more popular Android names out there–Google’s Nexus 9, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S2, and so on.

Either way, Android tablets are seeing a rather hefty decline, and there doesn’t seem to be a plan for recovering these numbers.

Samsung Galaxy View passes by FCC, headed to AT&T

Samsung-Galaxy-View-tablet-FCC2

Tablets are getting bigger, that’s a fact and while Microsoft, Apple and Google itself have pushed the boundaries of tablet size, Samsung looks set to push it even further. The Korean company has long been rumoured to be working on a large 18.4-inch tablet and ahead of its launch, the Galaxy View has paid a visit to the FCC.

The FCC has approved the tablet, which comes with model name SM-T677A, and the A moniker (along with the list of LTE bands) confirms the tablet has been designed for use with AT&T’s LTE network. This is further referenced by the presence of the AT&T logo on a sketch of the back of the tablet and this also reveals Samsung’s tablet will sport stereo speakers on its rear.

Samsung-Galaxy-View-tablet-FCC1

Further digging by PhoneArena into the FCC documents also reveals the dimensions and shows that the Galaxy View will certainly be the largest tablet on the market. The tablet will be 447 millimeters wide and 272 millimeters tall with a diagonal size of 513 millimeters. The screen will measure about 18.6-inches, which far surpasses the 10-13 inches adopted by the largest tablets on the market. The size of the Galaxy View display also seems to put the tablet firmly in the laptop category.

A recent visit to GFXBench revealed some of the hardware specs, which include an octa-core 1.6GHz Exynos 7 processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB storage and Android 5.1.1 with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. The display is expected to be just 1080p resolution, which is average but with an expected pixel density of just 118 pixels per inch, we’re really hoping this is a mistake; after all, even entry-level Android smartphones offer a higher density and such a low density is likely to have a major impact on the Galaxy View experience.

The-Samsung-Galaxy-View-tablet

It’s unclear when Samsung plans to release its larger-than-life tablet but with the holiday season approaching, a release can’t be too far off. Would you buy an 18.6-inch tablet and do you think the Galaxy View is a prime candidate for a 4K display? Let us know your views in the comments below guys!
